Escape From Mount Stupid: Half-Life

Danny returns to Black Mesa and City 17 to remind us how Gordon Freeman saved first-person shooters forever.

I remember the first time I played Half-Life. My brother copied it from his university friend's shared drive and bundled the files onto a bunch of zip disks. He went to university 100 miles away in Dublin and came home only on the weekends, so it took three weeks before we had all the files on our home PC. It took me five summer weeks to finish it on the easiest difficulty. Five weeks of blissfully replaying entire levels over and over again. Five weeks in which I learnt most of what I know about first-person shooters. I was in university myself when the sequel came out, or rather I should have been. Instead, I took two weeks off to play the game.

The effect Half-Life had on first-person shooter design from that day forward is often forgotten, so this was a really important series to cover in Escape From Mount Stupid. It feels right to mark the start of the show's second season with a blockbuster. Over the next five weeks we'll have five more episodes going live each Monday afternoon.

As for the zip disks, well, if Valve is reading this, I've since bought the entire Half-Life collection on Steam, so no lawsuits please. Enjoy the show.

Shouldn't there have been a Ninja Gaiden Episode? And my God, I understand that it's a great game but the frequent comparisons to modern shooters is just sad. Yes, it is different from Modern Shooters. It has probably something to do with the fact that HL1 is 14 years old. The video just basically lists every little feature in HL and says how wonderful, innovative and cancer-curing it is. God Damn, now I know Danny is a redditor.

I know it's not a FPS but I think Amnesia The Dark Descent is worth mentioning, as far as recent innovator games go

Would love to see HL3 this year but I highly doubt it's gonna happen if Valve haven't already brought it up.

@Ultra_Taco Believe me when I tell you this: you can play the first Half Life game in computers 10 years old with no need of dedicated graphic cards. If you can read this message in your PC/notebook you can play it. Game is superbly programmed to still work in actual windows platforms.

HL1 was amazingly innovative but I sometimes forget how amazing it was because HL2 absolutely eclipsed it in quality. They have set a staggeringly high standard for themselves with the third game.

My favorite game of all time. Still haven't played anything that surprised me more. This game defined me as a gamer. Without question one of the best videogames in history.

@fullxtent I was in the US army. Infantry at that. And I can tell you that "military intelligence" is an oxymoron. It really doesn't take much to outsmart those guys.

@Sweendrix I agree, but what is hilarious GS just had a story on the top page about "Who the Hell is Vega." Complaining that they dont come right out and tell you what happened to Shepard and Vega..... HL is just so awesome.

What about System Shock? I mean the first one from 1994. That game was very advanced for its time, but most players preferred the mindless fun that the DooM series provided. Also, System Shock 1&2 weren't entirely lineal, while you have to unlock new areas, you can go back to the old ones if needed. Also, if they HL H.E.C.U. were Marines, this means that they can't belong to the US ARMY as the Marine Corps is actually an independent branch from the US Military, while in other countries their Marines or analogous usually are part of the Navy.

I've always like the Half-Life games. Truthfully though, I think SS2 was a better FPS. For some reason that game really pulled me in. The first System Shock was good for the time, but the instants true 3D FPSs were released it made the game look a little shabby, and it was kinda hard to go back due to the nature of 2.5 shooters. But SS2 refined every aspect, had an engaging story, a great atmosphere, and had some RPG elements to help refine your character, if you care for RPG elements it was a nice addition. I'll always love Half-Life, but System Shock 2 will always be the better game to me. Also, saved first person shooters? Were they ever really in trouble?

Half-Life and Deus Ex (the original 2000) proved that FPSes can be intelligent and innovative. They saved the FPS genre. CoD deuches need not apply.

This year is as good as any to announce the next tale of Gordon Freeman and company. Portal however has been primary focus and for good reason. Like the first Half-Life and it's sequel, Portal redefined gaming and in a different way. I hope when they do announce/release Half-Life 3 or even Episode 3, they do so while bringing to the table a game worthy of the line. They have had a lot of time but I would wait longer if what I am pretty sure is in the works needs the extra time to perfect it.

Half life 2 is a fine example of how games should tell a story. Let the gamer experience the story first hand rather than by telling it through cutscenes. Genius. Pure genius.

Half-Life 2 had me playing for weeks after weeks it was simply genius in everyway, not to mention it still got better physics, facial animations, story and gameplay compared to a lot of todays games. @DeadGothicRed I agree, bringing back Shepard would open up new story elements. He is also mute so bring out a story around him should be easy.

Some of the mods I've played for Half-Life 1 are absolutely insane, to the point that they're almost better than the original.

@FlyingAce1016 Half Life had dubstep?... It was electronic/ambient - something more akin to say, Radiohead, Brian Eno or Aphex Twin. This stuff has been around since the early 90's. More similar to Aphex Twin more than anything though.

If they don't get this game out soon then these guys are going to find themselves in Duke Nukem Forever territory. You know, that spot where they have been “working” on it for so long people assume it is going to be the second coming of Christ in the gaming world only to have their hopes smashed aaand then the stone throwing will begin.

@Nineinch-Tool Bioshock literally is considered the spiritual successor to System Shock (though Bioshock is far far easier, and much simpler in terms of RPG elements). Also in the same vein as System Shock is the original Deus Ex, both were utterly gigantic futuristic RPG's that had fantastic gameplay, characters and stories.

System Shock is very archaic but if anyone's gone back and beaten the original doom recently then go find a guide to download and run SS. It's a doom era game that introduced countless gameplay nuances, and a truly menacing atmosphere...it's basically a big daddy to Bioshock.

@skyke101 that would be a good pairing and very worthy of being informed about. No one really knows all the devs, and the work they were involved in, and created. Arguably just as important as any of the major guns

I don't have time to watch this now but i'll watch it tomorrow. Besides, i already know Half-Life is the one true king of FPS, Wolfenstein created it, Half-Life defined it and set the bar. My favorite game of all time.
