Dead Space haunting the Wii

EA's postearnings conference call reveals Nintendo edition of survival horror shooter; new Battlefield: Bad Company, multiplatform Mass Effect 2, Dante's Inferno in early 2010.

As part of its third-quarter earnings report today, EA revealed a grim holiday performance and a number of disappointments for gamers who were looking forward to earlier-year releases. PC games The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins as well as the multiplatform Godfather II, all once slated for release before March 31, have been moved to the publisher's next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.

Dead Space, now with more motion controls.
Dead Space, now with more motion controls.

Helping to ameliorate those delays during its postearnings conference call, EA revealed a number of surprises that will join these three games during the publisher's upcoming fiscal year. After emphasizing that EA must make a bigger push to capitalize on the Wii's success, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that a number of its core games will make the transition to Nintendo's best-selling platform, among them last year's survival horror hit Dead Space.

"We're bringing core intellectual properties to the franchise in categories we think have legs on the Wii platform," said Riccitiello. "A good example of this is Dead Space. We're bringing a Wii title to market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKU this past year."

However, that wasn't the only game announcement that Riccitiello slipped. The executive also said that the publisher's fiscal 2010 fourth quarter, which runs from January 1, 2010 through March 31 of that year, will see the release of a follow-up to EA DICE's well-rated Battlefield: Bad Company. Riccitiello also confirmed that BioWare is prepping Mass Effect 2 for a multiplatform release during the publisher's Q4 window, though he did not indicate whether the game would extend beyond the Xbox 360 and PC. EA Redwood Shores' Dante's Inferno is also expected to arrive during the January-March 2010 quarter.

Riccitiello also narrowed the release window for a number of previously announced games. Fight Night 4, now in development at EA Canada after the closure of EA Chicago, is expected to ship during the April-June quarter. During the publisher's July-September quarter, EA expects to launch Need for Speed: Shift for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, and PC, with Need for Speed: Nitro on the Wii and DS expected to follow in the October-December window.

One franchise that will not see a return next year is Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, Riccitiello did not expound on future plans for the long-running series.

Good God the Wii getting dead space? how do you even justify purring that amazing looking game on such a graphically weak platform, what's next how about you put it on the Nintendo DS Somethings are just not mean to be and this is one of them , and no i don't own a Wii

They should rename this "Lego Dead Space" when it is released on the Wii because that is what it will look like. There will have to be a drastic difference in difficulty made as well. Think of the difficulty divide between Resident Evil 4 on the Ps2 and when it was released on the Wii.

I think that Dead Space is a game to increase Nintendo's hardcore reputation. It will proberbly suck compared to the other consoles (just how they all suck compared to the fantastic PC version). Mass Effect multiplatform? Good. Wont buy it till a PC version comes out which again will be the better version, but at least we all get a taste of greatness. Plus, im more excited for the classic Bioware RPG thats coming out, whose name i cant remember. Dragon Age or something,

They can get away with Dead Space, it isn't like Dead Rising, 1000 things onscreen at once. Its also mostly closer quarters, the graphics should be pretty good. There are no wide open spaces or large areas in the game, it might look like Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay on the Xbox.

"multiplatform mass effect 2? what idiot came up with that? everytime an xbox exclusive gets made multiplatform to include PS3, the game seems to take twice as long to come out. y do 360 owners have to wait to play a game because of PS3? damn sony." and why do PS3 owners have to wait on the port of the 360 version of FF13? Damn Microsoft right? Deal with it, delays are inevitable.

I'm not looking forward to Sims 3 and Godfather 2, but about Dragon Age: Origins - really long wait.

Yeh, Nintendo have obviously taken note of the casual vs. hardcore debates. GTA on the DS...Madworld...Dead space? Something must be going on

I was kinda of disappointed that Mass Effect 2 might be multiplatform, but after i thought about it, it would be great for everyone to experience mass effect. And Dead space on the Wii..that sounds awesome.

The more 'Mature' rated games coming to the Wii the better. This could be ace.

Hopefully EA wont screw ME2 up, the first was so epic. Making it multiplat might do a FF13 and extend release by a year. It's great more people will get to play it though, I think PS3 has the right kind of gamers for it.

The Xbox 360 release of Dragon Age was set for Nov. 09 - hopefully this isn't affected. Glad PS3 owners will also get Mass Effect 2, the first was an amazing game. Nov. 2010 can't come soon enough.

I wonder how the Wii will handle boss battles and the vent/ambush system of the game. There will have to be considerable retooling. I wonder if that didnt work so well for pc/console will be smoother for the wii.

If you build it they will come. Well Nintendo built a well selling console, and I am waiting for more quality titles. This game looks like it is pretty solid. I'll definately be excited about it. Not to be a hater, but, MoH doesn't need to be released annually. Unless its a non-WWII shooter there is no point in releasing MoH. I think they are hitting the bottom of the barrel on WWII shooters.

Great, I really wanted to play Dead Space when it came out. I don't care if they drop the graphics a bit, as long as I can say: "that thing is gonna kill, go to very scared mode" I will be happy

Cool for Wii owners, but with the wii controls as imprecise as they are, I'm not sure it would work that well, but I hope it does. and I lol'd at "They should have Mii support"

Well that's an interesting turn of events, and I'm glad Nintendo will be part of the multiplatform game Dead Space. Although I find it very VERY hard to believe Riccitiello when he said (quote): "A good example of this is Dead Space. We're bringing a Wii title to market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKU this past year." Quality fear sure, >_> but I hope he wasn't implying quality graphics to boot. Anyway, besides all that, I'm glad Wii owners will actually be getting another serious title.

i am not saying that developers will drop the ps3 or 360 today, but if the economy continues it's downward spiral w/ stock value and currency value dropping then developers will turn to safe havens such as the wii w/ such a large install base. the wii has as large an install base as the ps3 and 360 combined. and if it is more cost effective to develope for one platform instead of 3 then that is what worries me. the ps3 and 360 will continue to get good titles, but that isn't promised by all developers. hell, if a game will sell 4 million between the 360 and ps3, and then turn around and sell 4 million on the wii alone what do you believe will happen? just my thoughts, and hopefully they don't come true.

@TheDecoy, even though the Wii is graphically capable of much more than many of the games currently running on it tried (regardless of what its gameplay will be like, just look at the latest Conduit videos), no one "attempted to compare it graphics wise to the 360 and PS3". For me it will all be about how well it plays, not whether it looks spectacular or just nice.

If the Wii can't even handle Dead Rising (which looks way crappier), I'm cringing at what a Dead Space Wii version will look like. That said, EA and the franchise need the cash, so if an embarassing port is what it'll take to ensure Dead Space 2, so be it. Honestly, this goddamned economy. This is the ONE year where EA really tried their hardest to put out original IPs, and they get this as their reward. I hope they don't go back to their old ways.

Okay, I have all 3 consoles and after renting this for the PS3 and owning it on the 360 right now, no matter what you Wii only people say this version will not live up to the 360 and PS3 version, it's technically impossible even if they tried so stop whineing saying it is. I'll probally rent it and see how it plays before I consider a purchase. Now, it might play better, or be a better experience because of Wii controls, but don't even attempt to compare it graphics wise to the 360 and PS3. I'm not bashing the Wii at all, but it's just a fact that in many ways the system is far less superior to that of the 360 and PS3. But, I'm glad the Wii's finally getting an amazing game such as Dead Space. If RE4 has one of the highest Wii scores with it being 4 years old, this should really be good.

Excellent news!!! As an owner and HUGE fan of the 360 version, I was actually, anxiously hoping for a Wii version of the game. If EA can match the quality of game and control that Capcom did with RE4: Wii Edition, this will be a fantastic addition to the Wii library. Don't "casualize" it and keep it creepy as hell, and its a day 1 purchase for me. THANK YOU EA!!! Now we need Godfather 2 for Wii. Blackhand Edition was great!

zmbi_gmr, good views. but even with the current economy, developers can still make games for the ps3, 360 and the wii. yes it may cost more money but alot more people will have acess to that game thus more money to the developer.

@4quarters, you wrote "It will be too hard to precisely aim and dismember" - have you played RE4 on the Wii ? (this isn't a jab, I'm honestly asking, trying to figure out why you wrote this remark, since my experience with the RE4 Wii is the opposite)

@09231991 and zmbi_gmi - I don't see any real possibility of companies abandoning PS3 and 360 "hardcore" (I hate this term) games development. While I believe there is a significant hardcore base that owns the Wii (of which I am one), I am reasonably certain that, while that base shouldn't be ignored by anyone that wants to maximize their profits, it is not as big a base as in the other 2 consoles combined (or even on their own) and so going the other way and ignoring the PS3 and 360 would also be a mistake that the companies would want to avoid.

Hopefully the motion controls will make up for the no-doubt sucky graphics. And with as many blood particles as Dead Space has, I can forsee an unreliable framerate. That game is sick man. :D

I'm on my second play through od Dead Space on PS3, easily one of the best new games last year !!!!! But I don't think I could play this on my Wii, we have a hard time with games that feature too much going on at once. It wii be too hard too precicisely aim and dismember and the graphics will never hold up, this game is a graphics powerhouse!! The jury's out, but kudos to EA for trying.

@ zmbi_gmi, I agree, that's what worries me in the future of gaming. I companies could churn out games faster on the wii than 360, PS3, or both and still make the same amount of profit or more, they'll stick more with the wii meaning less games or worse games for the PS3 and 360. Basically, with the way things are right now with the economy and companies losing money like crazy, they're going to have to stick with their safe havens which be more than likely, the wii in which, like I said earlier, worse or less titles available for the PS3 or 360. The only thing that comes out of this port that is good is that wii owners can enjoy a great game but as zmbi_gmr said, most won't b/c the user base is to young.
