Dead Space haunting the Wii

EA's postearnings conference call reveals Nintendo edition of survival horror shooter; new Battlefield: Bad Company, multiplatform Mass Effect 2, Dante's Inferno in early 2010.

As part of its third-quarter earnings report today, EA revealed a grim holiday performance and a number of disappointments for gamers who were looking forward to earlier-year releases. PC games The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins as well as the multiplatform Godfather II, all once slated for release before March 31, have been moved to the publisher's next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.

Dead Space, now with more motion controls.
Dead Space, now with more motion controls.

Helping to ameliorate those delays during its postearnings conference call, EA revealed a number of surprises that will join these three games during the publisher's upcoming fiscal year. After emphasizing that EA must make a bigger push to capitalize on the Wii's success, EA CEO John Riccitiello said that a number of its core games will make the transition to Nintendo's best-selling platform, among them last year's survival horror hit Dead Space.

"We're bringing core intellectual properties to the franchise in categories we think have legs on the Wii platform," said Riccitiello. "A good example of this is Dead Space. We're bringing a Wii title to market this year and it is absolutely going to be the quality and fear factor that you got on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC SKU this past year."

However, that wasn't the only game announcement that Riccitiello slipped. The executive also said that the publisher's fiscal 2010 fourth quarter, which runs from January 1, 2010 through March 31 of that year, will see the release of a follow-up to EA DICE's well-rated Battlefield: Bad Company. Riccitiello also confirmed that BioWare is prepping Mass Effect 2 for a multiplatform release during the publisher's Q4 window, though he did not indicate whether the game would extend beyond the Xbox 360 and PC. EA Redwood Shores' Dante's Inferno is also expected to arrive during the January-March 2010 quarter.

Riccitiello also narrowed the release window for a number of previously announced games. Fight Night 4, now in development at EA Canada after the closure of EA Chicago, is expected to ship during the April-June quarter. During the publisher's July-September quarter, EA expects to launch Need for Speed: Shift for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP, and PC, with Need for Speed: Nitro on the Wii and DS expected to follow in the October-December window.

One franchise that will not see a return next year is Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, Riccitiello did not expound on future plans for the long-running series.

I dont own Dead Space & I will eventually buy this game. Im not a graphics whore like most people r so i'll try this out 4 the Wii 1st. I say this cuz it plays like RE4 & RE4 Wii Edition wuz a great game (the best version i think of RE4). So if the controls r gonna b anything like RE4 then i'll get this on the Wii.

I'm wary about this... it has the potential to be good. The Wii's motion controls might work beautifully with this port, like they did for the ports of Okami and RE4. But... there are problems. There's the graphical downgrade, which will always turn away some people. And then there's the fact that only about 35% of Wii owners will be interested in Dead Space, and they are the ones who probably already have it on PS3/360/PC. I sincerely wish them good luck with this. They'll need it.

Hey, look what Retro Studios was able to do with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the Wii... Obviously, with the proper care and development, EA could make Dead Space for the Wii rather amazing.

The biggest problem with the Wii, is that 3rd party ports are almost universally dreadful. Dead Space was a graphical masterpiece... that has to be dumbed down for the Wii. Dead Space had great controls... which frankly don't seem like they'd translate well to motion control. Either you're going to make it all gimmicky (a flick of the wrist changes weapon orientation?) or you make the game absurdly easy by making the tactical dismemberment a point and click breeze. Neither sounds like fun. The Wii's future is either in home-grown games that a wide audience can enjoy, or more **** like Wii Music and Fit that isn't even for gamers. As the next gen marches on, the Wii only seems to compete in the financial arena, where it is a clear success. For the gamer however... who wants to play Dead Space on the Wii when you can play it on a vastly more powerful system, at higher settings... oh yeah... Lets face it, the time delay alone is a slap in the face. This is just a way to get those few real gamers who play the Wii to desperately try and get a piece of the real gaming action. Frankly, the Wii makes me miss the Gamecube.

It seems like 90% of every one who owns a Wii isn't even old enough to play M games, so why would they make Dead Space for it??

Quote: Good lord.. No. Just no. They couldn't even get the PC version right. Dead Space on the PC I thought was very good. My second favourite game of last year. The Wii is capable, and has dual layer DVD capabilities. Give it a chance.. I just hope if it is good that enough people buy it so more developers think of the Wii as a machine to be developed for.

Mass Effect 2? Dead Space Wii (Which if they pull it off like RE4 Wii, it could work)? BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY SEQUEL?! EA, you are gonna have a good year if you pull this one off.

It will be interesting to see how well Dead Space is ported to the wii. My bet is that the ominous atmosphere will be lost when the graphics are downgraded...

I own a Wii, but I haven't touched the thing in a year - mostly because none of the games are fun for more than a few days. Given the Wii's history, this game hasn't got a chance in hell of being good.

I really find it interesting that even though there are no screenshots, no video, and not other information other than the announcement of Dead Space for the Wii; and there are all these post saying how bad and crappy the game will be. Anyone who have acutally ever played the game know that, #1 although the visual so set the tone for Dead Space, the game is not driven by its graphics . Just because the Wii can't match the visuals of the PS3 and the 360 doesn't mean that the visuals for Dead Space on the system won't be able to set the same tone as the other versions. #2 the control scheme for Dead Space greatly resembles those of RE 4. so it was only stand to reason that if RE4 Wii Edition control scheme can be replicated on the Wii, then it's version of Dead Space controls would be much better than those of the PS3 or 360. Now I'm not saying that Dead Space Wii will be a good game or a bad one, I'm just not a person that is going to call a game bad based solely on what system it's annouced for.

I really want to see how Dead Space will look on the Wii, probably not the same as on X360, Ps3 or PC but I hope they do a good job :D the same goes to Battlefield: bad company ;) On the other side I'm pissed of to see that Sims 3 and Dragon age origins are moved to later dates  did they have to do that

@ mastriania re 4 was originally released on the gamecube. Your ps2 version was a re-release, and judging by your comment i know you haven't played it on the wii. I think it's funny that no one ever complained about graphics when the gc's graphics were superior to ps2 and games like re4 and viewtiful joe were getting ported w/ worse graphics. I'm glad nintendo made a console that my wife will play with me, and i'm also glad that i have my dreamcast, 360 and ps2. Why do you people want every console to be exactly the same? What would be the point?

Just to make this Clear! There is NO talk about a Dead Space PORT. Wii is getting Dead space and it probably needed to be worked from the ground up, so maybe there could be some exclusive features for the Wii to make up for it´s late arrival.

My buddy played Dead Space on his 360, but he didn't really care for it. Maybe I'll give it a go on the Wii and see how I like it. With the extra development time I would hope that they fixed any bugs and perfected the controls by now. I mostly buy Wii exclusives only, because they get the most care and attention that Wii games need, but something about Dead Space gives me hope.

Good lord.. No. Just no. They couldn't even get the PC version right. I can't even begin to imagine how bad the Wii build will be, plus a few gimmicks thrown in for the motion controller. Plus the Wii just can't pull off the visuals, and that will automatically be a failure in the eyes of many gamers. (I love my Wii, but it's just not built for this sort of thing.) Pass.

Awesome!!!! Now all the Wii needs is a new Perfect Dark, Phantasy Star Online, Unreal Tournament, Castlevania (Side Scrolling Adventure Game, I like Judgment too though), Otogi, Gungrave, FPS Matrix (Except for the hand-to-hand combat, that could still be 3rd person), and alot of other games. Keep it coming Wii.

"Somethings are just not mean to be and this is one of them , and no i don't own a Wii" So your opinion is worthless because you're a fanboy instead of a gamer. A gamer doesn't care what console something is on because.. they just play games. You're acting like a jealous little boy that doesn't want someone else to enjoy the same toy that you do.

The graphics are one thing (that can be overcome if they aren't lazy), but assuming they don't severely dumb it down for no good reason, it'll be a fine game.

The only dead space I'm thinking of is the area inside the head of whoever thought porting Dead Space to the Wii was a good idea. The system can't handle it and the stay at home Wii Fit moms won't want to play it. It will be inferior in every way to the 360, PS3 and PC versions. Just what the Wii needs - another showcase for what it can't do. As for all the comments about Mass Effect 2 coming to the PS3, there's no mention at all of a PS3 release in the news story. "Multiplatform" most likely means a release on the 360 and PC, just like the original Mass Effect.

EA needs to drop that NFS Shift because that game is almost guaranteed to lose money from the sound of it. One prostreet was bad enough. And Dead Space on the Wii is actually a good financial decision since it has a wider audience and the game didn't sell as well on the other platforms due to more competition even though it was an excellent game.

Honestly I think the game would be awesome for the wii. And I would probably buy it. The mechanics are perfect for wii's controls. I played resident evil 4 on wii, and it's hard for me to go back to the controller, it just seems quicker to point and shoot rather then guide the laser from your gun at your target.

It would be interesting to see, if by multiplat they mean PS3, if the PS3 gets Mass Effect 1 as well as 2. It was a great game. Also, I used to be a be a big Medal of Honor fanboy, but I really hope they put that series to bed. The AI, random pointless deaths, and dropping a whole clip into a guy without him dying made Airborne one of the most frustrating gaming experiences that I've had.

EA porting games to the Wii....add more Water downed ports to the list of games the Wii offers that are better on 360 and PS3. EA, eh, i hope they go under and other companies buy up their good IPs. I still hate EA for ruining NFL games for me, Madden sucks compared to what 2k Sports offered in the world of Football.

Well there was no indication of Mass Effect 2 on the PS3, only PC & 360.. What would be good for PS3 owners is Mass Effect 1 & 2 on a Dual Layered Bluray disc. Then it would sell even more :) As for Dead Space, I am alittle surprised it is coming to the Wii. The Wii does need some more mature games, but can it pull it off successfully. I hope they can, but when I heard the photography part was taken out of Dead Rising on the Wii, maybe the same thing will happen here for Dead Space. Things missing from the game. Only time will tell.

great, ps3 got bioshock and now mass effect, is sony that desperate. im really begining to really hate sony and call me a fanboy. im a little p***** at microsoft aswell for not keeping hold of these games and buying out some ps3 exclusives which they can easily do. i dont think dead space should go on the wii (eugh) just no, but what can you expect from EA. i have to say that resi 4 should of just stayed on the gamecube.
