Dead Island: Riptide publisher explains Wii U absence

UPDATE: Techland says the decision to not release Dead Island: Riptide on Wii U has nothing to do with the technical capabilities of the game's engine.

Update: A Techland representative has told GameSpot that Dead Island: Riptide's engine would not need to be rewritten or adapted to run on the Wii U and that the decision to not release the game on the Wii U was not down to the engine's capabilities.

"Wii U compatibility was coded, created, and tested months ago, back in 2012. There's no 'rewriting' needed to make it work on Nintendo's latest console. So the bottom line is that there were no plans to create a Wii U version but that decision had nothing to do with Chrome Engine's inability to run on that platform," said Techland.

Original Story: Current-gen open-world FPS Dead Island: Riptide won't be coming to the Wii U, publisher Deep Silver has said.

No Caption Provided

Speaking in an interview with Digital Spy, creative producer Alexander Toplansky said the development team at Techland would have either rebuilt the engine to work on Nintendo's latest hardware or simply ported the game. "One of the opportunities we had for Riptide was to continue the development of the engine, and really improve it and make a lot of refinements," said Toplansky.

"The things that are required to bring something to a new platform, you need to either really get to be integrating it deep into the engine, or you've got to [do] a port."

"Neither one of those was a satisfactory outcome for us, so we decided to do what we got platform-wise and just make sure that we can deliver the best experience we can."

Toplansky also confirmed that the studio wasn't actively planning to support the Wii U in the future, but wouldn't rule out the idea completely. "It's not something I would categorically rule out, but it's not something that's planned," he said.

Dead Island: Riptide is being released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on April 26 in Europe and on April 23 in North America.

The original Dead Island has now sold over 5 million copies since its launch in 2011, Deep Silver parent company Koch Media announced in February.

"While others focus on ever-increasing development budgets and driving brand messages via ballooning marketing expenditures, Deep Silver stands for hitting the zeitgeist, innovation and fresh gameplay," said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz at the time.

Just make it clear...

Techland is a developing studio.

Deep Silver is a Publisher.

I would be getting this for my PC not Wii U anyway so it's no big deal really. Not that I'm getting it.

Looks like they just plain don't want to, perhaps because Wii-U doesn't have a very large userbase. But, who knows? Mr. Miyamoto, go work for Sony.

@wcwj26 It would be alot easier for Miyamoto-san to change allegiances to Sony. For one thing, Sony's headquarters is just down the block from Nintendo. Two, native Japanese won't often work for a foreign company, but are more likely to work with their own people. Third, Sony Playstations have dominated the game market since the PS1. If you have a PC, there's really no need for an Xbox.

@Kaobasa @badwedgie00 I don't know about more popular. They're both around 75 million. Maybe Xbox 360 is ahead by a million.

@Kaobasa @badwedgie00 The 360 is popular in America over the PS3.....where in Japan, the 360 all but died 3 years ago, while Sony and Nintendo made a lot of profit.

@wcwj26 the original Xbox and the 360 bombed in Japan. Nobody in Japan wants an American made consoles because they are shit.

@badwedgie00 @wcwj26 Have you ever considered that maybe, just maybe, Miyamoto works for Nintendo because he wants to and not because he must strictly do it? I don't think Sony's vision would offer anything to Miyamoto for what he wants to accomplish in a developer perspective. Nintendo is the organization that makes more sense for him to be with, not to mention all the years he has devoted there.

@badwedgie00 @wcwj26 I think if miyamoto retires I don't think he would join any other game company after all sony and microsoft will limit his creativity to mostly graphics, and most of his franchises would be shels of thier former selves, just look at Rare

@badwedgie00 @wcwj26 Not true ... Sony did not dominate this generation ... the Wii outsold it by a large margin. And it you have a PC, there's really "no" need for a PS3 ... how's that for logic?

@badwedgie00 Nintendo and Miyamoto are synonymous. The fact is if Miyamoto went to Sony his vision would be reduced to graphics over innovation. It's not going to happen anyway and I think gaming is richer for it.

@badwedgie00 What do you mean it depends on personal preference? Yes, you can think a game is great while others don't, but that's not the point being made. He's talking about financially successful. It's absolutely no mystery that the Xbox is far more popular than the PS3 which would naturally mean that its exclusives will sell far better. I think you know that but are being blissfully ignorant of it.

Thankfully the PS4 is shaping up to be a nifty console. However with the bad rep they've earned during the PS3 generation they have a lot to come back from.

@wcwj26 Some might dislike Nintendo, but that is the company, not the person of Miyamoto. Miyamoto joining Sony would be a victory because it would welcome a creative genius that could help develop a greater variety of first-party titles for Sony.

@badwedgie00 M$ does have more successful IP's. The sales speak for themselves. As for Miyamoto joining Sony,I doubt Sony fans would want that! They make it pretty obvious they HATE Nintendo!

@wcwj26 I don't know about M$ having more successful IPs, that depends on one's own personal preferences. However, in this case, a born-and-bred Japanese like Miyamoto-san would choose his own ethnic group to that of "foreigners". Race-based preferences would overrule other factors.

@badwedgie00 Sure, because PS3 and Vita are the dominant force right now! Sony headquarters may be in Japan, but im sure Miyamoto would rather go to a company that has successful IP's that people BUY!

@96augment Sure, it's a good number, but compared to the other big sellers this gen, it should of sold better.

When Mario Kart Wii is selling 33.6m units, you have to admit it's a bit of an alarming gap!

@wcwj26 not to be lame here, but some people just don't want to hand out their account to a billion random strangers. Also, you don't need a friend code; you can just add accounts. Finally, he has a valid point regardless of whether he owns one. The WiiU is a fantastic system with fantastic potential, but the ridiculous drought of games really does make me want an xbox instead.

@Bl4KD37H You don't own a Wii U! It's pathetic you need to lie about! I would ask you for your Friend Code AGAIN (just like dozens of other Wii U users have done) but there's only so many times you can go silent before it's obvious your lying through your teeth!

Why spend money developing for a system that very few have purchased and does not have the target demographic for the game? Looks like a sound business decision to me.

@dlCHIEF58 @Bl4KD37H because you can make more money then usual putting it out on all 3 consoles....which in turn prevents you from going Bankrupt?

LOL, and if development or porting cost more than you make in profits since there is a lower install user base and a smaller portion of that would actually purchase the game, what then? THQ thought the same thing with the uDraw tablet (releasing on more consoles=more money) and how did that work out for them? Bankrupt, and they were bigger than Koch Media and Deep Silver.

Try looking at it without your fanboy goggles on and face reality - unless Nintendo does something drastic the WiiU is going to get less 3rd party support they did during the N64 and Gamecube eras due to not enough units sold to justify developing for it.

@dlCHIEF58 @Bl4KD37H So how do you explain the new games being developed for Playstation 4? It's not like anyone has purchased that yet. The correct answer would be that even though it's not on the market yet there's already a lot of demand for the console. That's good and all but soon the real numbers could show otherwise based on how it fares. Also, Nintendo has openly said that their target is well beyond kids and ZombiU it's just one example which proves that right. All I see here is a lazy/resourceless publisher based purely on what they said about the reason for not developing a WiiU version of the game which is still a business decision.

Yeah, ZombiU - how did that turn out? Not very good as I recall in terms of sales. Nintendo may want to expand their user base to a more mature audience but they have not been able to do it. Two examples of good games on Nintendo systems that fared poorly - Madworld and GTA: Chinatown Stories.

And sure games are being developed for PS4/Xbox 720 as expected, but from past experience the ones jumping on early will be the major players (EA, Ubisoft, Take Two, Activision) but will be a shortage of games during the launch window.

This has nothing to do with Deep Silver or Koch Media being lazy. It has to do with a smaller developer and publisher seeing the smaller install base and poor sales on a new system that probably won't see enough of a return on the investment to develop the game for the system, especially when mature games on Nntendo generally do very poorly. Just because you chose the wrong console to buy for 3rd party support don't complain about a developer who is playing it smart and not risking financial ruin from poor sales on a system no one has bought.

With a 140m PS360's out there the chances are Wii U owners already own one of the other 2. So making Dead Island for Wii U IS a bad investment. But hey, a trolls need every hollow victory he can get!
