360 GTAIV most-rented game of '08

Rockstar's crime-spree sim tops Rentrak's annual rental top 10, which sports seven 360 games and three Wii games; PS3 MIA.

Tomorrow, industry-research firm the NPD Group is expected to release its year-end 2008 sales numbers for the US game market. Today, top nationwide video-rental measurement company Rentrak Corporation released its own figures for 2008, which listed the top 10 games that were rented most across the country. The company claims to track more than 1 billion transactions and 65,000 movie and game rental properties every year. It ranked games according to consumer spending, not actual units rented, at thousands of rental locations nationwide.

"Time to go get a 9mm discount at Game Crazy!"

Like NPD's monthly best-seller list, Rentrak's top 10 reflects only individual retail products, or SKUs (stock-keeping units), and does not combine rentals of each console iteration of multiplatform games. As such, the company says that the most-rented game of 2008 was Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360, followed by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360. The next three top renters were also all on Microsoft's console: Halo 3 (3rd), Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (4th), and Army of Two (5th).

The first non-360 game doesn't pop up until sixth place in the form of Mario Kart Wii. Behind it was another Nintendo favorite, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, with the 360 Fallout 3 (8th) and Assassin's Creed (9th) behind it. Last but not least was another Wii game, Mario Party 8, leaving the third-place PlayStation 3 shut out of the year's top-10 rentals.

Rentrak said that the two top-finishing consoles both increased their share of the rental market last year. The Xbox 360 went from 26.1 percent (2007) to 36.8 percent (2008) of consumer dollars spent on rentals, while the Wii went from 7.3 percent to 17.1 percent. Rentrak did not release PS3 statistics.

RENTRAK'S MOST RENTED GAMES OF 2008
1) Grand Theft Auto IV / Xbox 360 / Rockstar Games
2) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare / Xbox 360 / Activision
3) Halo 3 / Xbox 360 / Microsoft
4) Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 / Xbox 360 / Ubisoft
5) Army of Two / Xbox 360 / Electronic Arts
6) Mario Kart Wii / Wii / Nintendo
7) Super Smash Bros. Brawl / Wii / Nintendo
8) Fallout 3 / Xbox 360 / Bethesda
9) Assassin's Creed / Xbox 360 / Ubisoft
10) Mario Party 8 / Wii / Nintendo

@death919 Renting increases sales. If rental companies weren't buying those games then in all likelihood, the consumer wouldn't be buying them either. I know for me, there are certain games that I will not buy, but I'll definitely rent them to try it out.

@DisPimpin: "Year of the PS3?" If you mean the year MGS4 finally got released on PS3 and the game sold well then, yeah. However if you are implying it was the year when PS3's sales unit surpassed the 360 then, no. @Kleeyook: Same song and dance.

Yeah, GTAIV is definitely a game to rent. After the whole story is done, you likely won't touch it again...

There's a reason why it's the most rented: Because there's nothing to do once you've beaten it!

ALTAIR360, They are watching Blu-Ray movies....PS3 = Affordable Blu-Ray player, ranked as the best Blu-Ray player for the price range and it does play games. What hurts it is MS gets exclusives or exclusive content for their games and it hurts the PS3, but the PS3 is a great Blu-Ray player

Ultima-Chocochu, Are you freakin' serisous. These games were not popular? Call of Duty 4, was game of the year with a lot of groups. Halo 3 broke records for selling in the first 24 hours and month, as did GTA 4. The only one i can agree with that was lousy was Army of Two, yet the game was a hit with players and people in LAN centers were playing it constantly because of the Co-Op modes. Dude, seriously don't go and say OPINIONs about games when cleary the statistics show otherwise of some of these being great games and also, people buying the games as well shows otherwise, oh and lets forget the reviews GTA4, halo 3, CoD4 and R6: Vegas 2 got (which Vegas 2 was another great game).

XD, fanboys you are hiiilarious. Everyone know's 360 has sold more than PS3, but if you take all these statistics to be true about rental's and all, all it says is more people have 360's. All the games on the list were not unpopular games among 360 or PS3, they were all big titles and not everyone knew if they'd like them or not. Point being, this is rentals and not actual sells in which, people rent because they don't know if they'd actually want the game. The only thing I wonder is, does this include GameFly or just rental stores? If so, what is the big deal about people having a game 5 days XDDDD

Maybe this stats are not that important to fanboys, especially if your favorite console is not on the list, but this has significant impact to devs. If you were a developer and putting millions in a game, which console would you invest in?

ha, ha. that just goes to show you that people only buy a ps3 to watch blu-ray. 40-50% of people rent games over buying them anyway so this is an important stat. any apparently all these people that are buying wii's don't rent/buy games they just want wii sports.

Did anyone happen to notice that there is not one single sony ps3 game in the top ten? Not one single sony game period! 7 of those games belong to the x-box 360..... man that makes me feel sooooo goooood. Thats not to say I don't like Sony games... I just wish they would hurry up and make some! Either way does Grand theft Auto 4 being at the top really surprise anyone? I mean does it really? Not me, I mean every single kid on the planet we call earth wants to play this game..... Its a good game, but not for kids.... I see people I grew up with let their kids play this stuff all the time... I just sit there and awe at peoples parenting now a days... and then we wonder went wrong when something goes wrong...... Like that kid from who killed 4 cops and did everything he did in Grand theft auto but only in real life. Then he turned around and blamed this great game. People with bad parenting always looking for a scape goat.... oh well. I love this game either way.

Lol at the lame xbots, every major publications except a few ones that are on microsoft's payroll have shown that ps3 had the best games of 2008 and 2009 is looking even better at 360's expense. And now the bots are showing that the ps3 is weak using a chart of the most rented games of the year. How pitiful.

I'm not trying to pick on PS3 fans, but Stats like this are important, because Video/game renting establishments use this information for how they purchase games. If one console has a trend to get more rentals, they tend to buy more for that group. This happened with the original xbox and the PS2 , but it was xbox that was in the shadows. I always had a hard time finding games to rent. Video connection stopped stocking xbox games at 2 of their smaller stores that I went to. These trends do leave an impact, especially when Video stores do account for sales. Even if BlockBuster only bought 1,000 copies. Do the math for yourself. A sale is a sale.

Pretty much I'm in the same boat as Msashi920... I mean come on guys, it's like if they compared the 360 and the PS3 in a contest of which gets destroyed the slowest in a microwave you guys would declare a console superior off that.

Damn I hate you sony fanboys. You make us PS3 owners look bad. Look at the list. Considering it I would bet that 11-20 are probably the same games but for PS3 since those are all MULTIPLATFORM games. Just exchange halo3 for MGS4. What does renting ultimately mean? Nothing. Because companies aren't profiting. Only the renting store is. Maybe it really does mean ps3 owners have the money to buy instead of rent. Or maybe it means 360 owners have the good sense to rent a game before waste $60+tax on something that might suck. This really isn't anything to get worked up over.

PS3 fanboys need to stop making excuses. Except for Halo 3, all those games are multiplatform games. High rentals only speak to the high install base. People buy games that are their favorites and rent games they want to try out. I buy rpg and action games, I'm more likely to rent a games that are fps. I like to buy games with high replay value and rent games like Bioshock. If I had a PS3 I would never buy MGS. I would rent it and probably buy LBP. It makes sense. It has nothing to do with how much money you have.

I'm sure glad we don't get to rent XBOX 360 games here in Holland. Imagine that: Going to a store renting a game to see if it's worth 60 bucks. Or 90 bucks as is the case in Europe. That's right folks. You heard me: New games cost 60 euro's a pop.... Damn M$. I'm never buying a M$ product ever again
