Ew, Skyrim in first person. I can't believe that's the default and popular way of playing that game.

Sorry, off-topic.

@trugs26: I only ever played Skyrim in 1st person on the PC. I can understand why you wouldnt want to play in first person on consoles because of the vomit inducing console FOV.

The third person view on consoles is even worse, you can't zoom in and out like you can on PC and it's set zoomed in far to much.

@trugs26: It's the ONLY way to play because, lets face it, those third person animations are somewhat horrific.

Ps move controllers with haptic feedback should do it, it`s the cheapest and best way to make VR accessable for most people.

That haptic ultrasound feedback thingy is super awesome :)! I wish I could try it out.

I don't really believe in motion tech on its own. Thing is that in most games your character does things impossible to mimic (which is kind of why those games are cool). I think there should be some sort of glove with a few buttons for when that extra crisp/precise input is needed. It's a very difficult design challenge I think and it will take time for the industry to settle for a standard. It's also the fact that everyone are so used with the DS4/X1 type controllers that introducing anything new will cause a lot of disturbance.

Also horror games don't need to be scarier, I could only play 5 minutes of vanilla Amnesia before I surrendered :).

oculus rift = kinect, it reminds me the 3d glasses on the cinema it only makes the movies i like worst. this BS vr stuff is jut that BS. vr will work in games one day but not like this. also most gamers just want to grab the controller chill and play a game.and lots of us dont need glasses to get scared in a horror game our mind is tricked anyway.

If you haven't read Ready Player One then stop what you're doing and go get it immediately.

"How is this going to work without a controller?"

Just because another method of input has been introduced doesn't mean that it has to be the only method of input. Use a controller to move around and play like you usually do and, when you need to, let go and reach out to interact with the world.

You people really need to stop being so narrow minded.

@squall_83: I have to disagree. Its like trying to make an essay with T9 keyboard you can do the work sure but its not worth it and will probably take you like 2 years to write it. How do you tell your character with your hand to move forward + jump + shoot? A controller or a keyboard is ergonomic and you can use it in a rested position. This other tecnologies that have come out ask you to have your hands in the air or move like crazy, yes thats how we gesture and open doors, and move objects but most of the time our hands are in a resting position or in a resting place, imagine having to play skyrim and have your hands draw everytime to use a spell or a hack?Playing kinect games will tell you why we need controllers and feedback. For me the perfect controller for VR is the wiimote or the PS colored dildos or what ever the name was. I dont know why people are always like "yeah you feel like you are in there but then you cannot touch it...fix it". Im always like, really? you have in your head a game changing tech and then you ask for more?

we are going to look back on this in 5-10 years and laugh at how lame it all is. unfortunately for us, this is where virtual reality begins and we need to support the tech from the beginning before it gets to the level that we expect. eventually, we won't need to wear those god awful goggles on our head but we have ways to go until then. i can see this tech being very immersive while watching a film. imagine watching a horror movie that you can't really look away from? due to the performance issues and input lag that you will undoubtedly get with games, i actually see greater potential with movie watching experiences at first.

The disconnect wont matter anyway. There is a disconnect already with games on a tv that we got used to. With time, that disconnect in VR will be unnoticeable.

"How Science Can Make VR Better"

Kinda weird title considering "science" is behind all this tech anyway :). Maybe something like "how NEW science is improving VR" would have been better?

Pretty cool tech that is getting combined here...it has more of an "arcade" style feel to it, and would be fun to experience.

Yet I'm still for submersion over immersion.../the art of not-moving/ and letting the game wash over you.

Playing an hour after work, I'll still be using the controller.

A night out for pizza & beer, this Tech would be fun, given the proper space.

Controller-less games will always be for casual gamers or hardcore gamers in short doses. Prolong gaming will just exhaust anyone. How long can you leave your hands in front of you playing Skyrim before it starts feeling too heavy to hold up?

Also pressing a button will always give faster response time than swinging your hands. There will be a place for VR games with no controllers, but there will always be uses for controllers in gaming and it will never go away.

@knyght1008: Thing is though that normal controllers are not great for VR as they look your hands position relative eachother. Some kind of split input device, which mixes motion and buttons, I think would be much better.

I saw some interview with Palmer Luckey in which he said that regular controllers were clearly not ideal for VR and that OR are researching options (if I recall correctly).

@knyght1008: Yes many people don't realize how tiring it is to hold your arm or hand or head in a non-resting position for any length of time.

@knyght1008: True, but we still want the holodeck for recreational entertainment. Or PE training by fighting monsters. I would go the gym all the time if I got to exercise with a virtual reality sword and fight monsters in a virtual obstacle course.

@amdreallyfast@knyght1008: Haha they need to first test drive any kinect game and they will come back asking for a controller. Also Oculus is a seated experience ( becuase of the sensors and stuff that will make you vomit), so no going to the virtual gym or getting tangled with wires and stuff. BUT i think the middle ground for a controller and using your hands will be a wiimote clone, you can still use your hands for mundane activities like grab or open doors point at stuff and still be able to be walk move or select stuff without having to wave your arms like crazy.

$25 remote control helicopter control by software that sits on a charge pad. Could be a really cheap way of doing some of this.

I think VR is going to take awhile before it really is commercially successful.

When I imagine the ultimate VR experience, I want space to move around in (without running into RL objects), tactile feel for the things I'm virtually touching, and maybe a little feedback when I get virtually shot so I can "feel" what's happening.

Without USB ports in my brain, I can't see that happening in anything less than a room in my house.

One thing about Oculus and NIMBLE (and lets say Skyrim) is how are you supposed to move about the world when you cant hold your controller? Will we have to invest in that ludicrous omni treadmill contraption?
