RtCW was for sure not average. It rocked... especially the MP. Raven's Quake 4 and Wolfenstein sucked tho.

Wolfenstein 3d wasn't the first FPS at all. It wasn't even Id Software's first FPS. They already had two FPS games out by then. Hoovertank 3d & Catacomb 3d. Research much? It's on their wikipedia page

It brings back a lot of old memories and the painful fact that those golden days of 90s gaming are now long gone.

Quote: Scalper "great video, brings back memories. Now do VALVe." I agree... This was a great trip down PC gaming's memory lane :) id were also responsible for me spending rediculous amounts of money on new hardware, just to see Quake in OpenGL with the GLQuake patch :P They'll always be a legend in my books. And like Scalper (as well as many others I suspect), I'd love to see a similar vid on Valve. Halflife was an amazing revamp on the FPS genre and probably has most of the Doom brigade as fans too.

Quake 2 was my first game, it was also my first person shooter. It was entirely different from games i play in that age. It took bloody 2 weeks for me to finish the game, playing nonstop. Then my uncle got me a gift, Heretic 2. Blood, lizardmen, amazing environment, magic, zombies... It is quite sad that you do not mention it. I would love to see a Heretic 3 with blood rituals, explosive magics and return of the mighty hero, Corvus and his adventures. I still play Quake 3, awesome multiplayer. Quake 4 was also cool. Doom 3 was too scary so i couldnt finish it :). Rage, haven't tried it yet. Now its up to you whether if i should get the game or not paying 48 dollars.

Doom remains as one of my favorite id games. I simply love the purity and unadulterated nature of those old school FPS where reflexes and knowing how to handle your arsenal meant everything. And the environments, the exploration and finding the secret areas within each level. TBH I still like and play Doom and many FPS games based on the Build Engine such as One Unit Whole Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, heck even Chex Quest!

@naryanrobinson @RSM-HQ Thanks for the feedback guys. I don't dislike RTCW, it's a good game, but not a great one imo. That's what I consider "average", but again, it's just my opinion. I'm not sure anybody would care about a video where we regurgitate old review scores ;)

Another amazing bluffers guide! Thanks man, keep 'em coming! I'll never forget the first time I played Wolfenstein 3D or Doom. Literally the worst computer in the world, playing in the dark with my best friend from school - epic! Unfortunately I missed the Quake part of the id lifecycle, as I simply didn't have the technology to deal with it, I remember the rich kids talking about it though! I think that's when I realised consoles were the way forward; affordable accessibility.

@naryanrobinson You're not wrong by any means about review scores of ol Gamespot. However this is Bluffers view on the games & not the person who reviewed them all that time ago. He's entitled to his opinions, and maybe he did like it back in the day but simply thinks it doesn't reach his modern standards.. But I digress.

Actually, as an update to my last post. On this very website Return to Castle Wolfenstein has a 9.2 rating, which means despite this guy's (wrong) opinion of the game, it's practically the highest rated id game ever in GameSpot's own eyes. (Quake got a 9.3 actually, and Quake III got the same ie. 9.2).

I don't know why, but I feel I need to say this: ID Software is the most important game developer...ever. That is not to say they're my favourite game developer, that is split between Sqaresoft (before they began to hold hands with Enix) and Bethesda. With the 5 Million first person shooters released every year, it's about time someone paid respect to the company that started the madness. I remember installing doom on a computer in high school computer lab....stupid teachers. No, I will not take your typing tests. Why would I? I can shoot things instead! Totally awesome! Ahh...wasn't youth beautiful?

And don't forget another thing. No matter how old Id's games are, chances are you're still playing them even after you've put down all the other fps's. They're as intense as you can get.

Pretty average Return To Castle Wolfenstein? The one that got 9.2 on Gamespot? Not so superb Quake 4? The same game that never ceases to be enjoyable no matter how many times you play it? (Sure the multiplayer was no different to Quake 3, but the singleplayer was amazing.) And what happened to Hexen and Heretic?

No kidding on id Software making a smooth transition to consoles - much of the effort in designing Rage seemed to have gone into the console versions. The PC version is clogged with day one bugs. :?

I got chills at 3:00 when the Doom theme music started :) Since you mentioned Nine Inch Nails for the first time in Quake, maybe you didn't know they did some of the soundtrack in Doom as well. There's even a secret altar to them later in the game. I loved Quake 3 like nothing else at the time as well, and it's strange to think you can play it now on a PC that costs $25 (Google Raspberry Pi). I think you mustn't have played Return to Castle Wolfenstein if your final judgement is "pretty average". The same thing goes for Quake 4. First of all, it didn't come out before Doom 3, it came out after, the engine it ran on (technically "id Tech 4") was called the "Doom 3 engine" inside the game itself. Secondly, GameSpot gave it a lower score than almost every other site, and even they gave it an 8.0 (great). I've only played a few hours of RAGE as well and I don't own it myself, but it's exactly what I wanted. It looks beautiful, it runs beautifully and shooting things in the wasteland is the most fun to be had in the world of gaming.

Rage is my new favorite id game. The graphics and gameplay are awesome. So what if it doesn't have a strong story or lots of autosaves, it's still a lot of fun and deserves much higher than an 8.0. I'm glad I got the Anarchy Edition 'cause my fists of rage are perfect for pummeling mutants!

He messed up the releases for Quake 4 and Doom 3. Doom 3 was released in 2004, not 2005 and Quake 4 was released in 2005, not 2004. He also forgot to mention Resurrection of Evil. But whatever. My favorite Id game is still Quake 2. Can't wait to play Rage though! Game looks boss!
