Resident Evil 6 Review

  • First Released Oct 2, 2012

  • X360

Resident Evil 6's messy mix of annoying quick-time events and constant set pieces makes it a poor caricature of modern-day action games.

With Resident Evil 6, a once-mighty series makes another stumble. From a production standpoint, this atmospheric third-person shooter (this is no survival horror game, certainly) hits a number of high notes, weaving multiple stories into a single narrative that you untangle from different perspectives. It's unfortunate that actually interacting with Resident Evil 6 is an excruciating chore. This is a wannabe action film that resents your interference, and punishes you by forcing one horrible quick-time event after another upon you.

Now Playing: Video Review - Resident Evil 6

That Resident Evil 6 wants to be a movie is evident in almost every facet of its gameplay. Plenty of games dramatize their events through extended cutscenes, Metal Gear Solid being an oft-cited example of a series known for long-winded cinematics. Having many cutscenes isn't a problem in and of itself; constantly interrupting the flow of gameplay, on the other hand, is Resident Evil 6's disappointing calling card.

In a typical five-minute stretch, you might watch a cutscene, walk for five seconds, trigger another cutscene, open a door, perform a quick-time event, view another cutscene, shoot some mutated freaks, and then do nothing while you wait for your co-op partner to finish some task or another before you can continue on. All through that stretch, the camera changes position countless times, you're forced to walk really slowly for a while, and an almost-unavoidable scripted "gotcha" moment gifts you with a game-over screen ("You Are Dead"), forcing you to replay the sequence while wondering what you could have done to prevent it.

These problems infiltrate all four of Resident Evil 6's campaigns, though each campaign shifts its focus and tone--and all but Ada Wong's puzzle-driven campaign (unlocked when you have finished the other three) feature cooperative play. In Leon Kennedy's campaign, you play as either Leon or newcomer Helena Harper, while your cohort is left to the care of another player, or of the AI. Leon's campaign is the most traditional, recalling the fourth and fifth chapters of the series by way of mysterious locations like an eerie graveyard and creep-strewn city streets. In a campaign that looks to military shooters for inspiration, Chris Redfield joins fellow BSAA operative Piers Nivens in war-torn streets to shoot up infected foes and larger-than-life bosses. Jake Muller and Sherry Birkin's campaign is focused more on scripted events than the others and lacks the thematic cohesion of the other three (unless you count an overload of contextual button prompts as a theme). A short prelude introduces you to the basic mechanics, which are mostly identical across the campaigns. It also functions as a warning of what's to come.

Jiggle the stick as fast as you can if you wish to avoid a kiss from Aunt Mabel.
Jiggle the stick as fast as you can if you wish to avoid a kiss from Aunt Mabel.

Right off the bat, you notice what is to be a common theme in Resident Evil 6: quick-time events are prominent to the point of distraction. Keep your thumbs limber and your trigger fingers ready, for you will be hammering buttons and jiggling thumbsticks ad nauseam. Wiggle that stick to get the monster off you! Furiously tap that button to crawl faster! Making matters worse is that the quick-time events aren't even that well implemented. Some of them require superhuman wiggling speeds; others, like those that require alternating trigger presses, don't have a clear rhythm. And succeeding means triggering a sonic zing and a bright circular eruption that distract you from the dramatic animations.

Even ignoring quick-time events, button prompts are the rule rather than the exception. Capcom drops in so many set piece moments that they lose their luster. Good set pieces--that is, large scale events with major visual punch and limited interactivity--punctuate gameplay, rather than replace it. Here, they constantly disrupt the gameplay, and a few types of set pieces emerge as clear developer favorites. One such type is the "run toward the camera" bit, in which you hold a button to sprint toward the camera, and press buttons to leap over obstacles or slide under them. It takes a special talent to make such sequences work, but no such talent is demonstrated here; the camera constantly changes position, which destroys the flow of both the controls and the visuals.

That big boss doesn't look so imposing from a distance.
That big boss doesn't look so imposing from a distance.

Resident Evil 6 is constantly (and annoyingly) playing with camera angles, even outside of the running sections. The worst moments are those that yank control from you and force you to stare at a growling behemoth's dramatic entrance, or a helicopter's flyover, even when you're in the middle of a quick-time event, or engaged in a shoot-out. Smart games either have you hold a button if you want to witness a major incident, or simply allow the incident to happen. Resident Evil 6 is not a smart game. It doesn't care what you're doing: that monster is big, and the game forces the bigness upon you. (And when the sequence is done, the camera may not be in the position in which it started.) Such occurrences are, every time, detrimental to gameplay, and it's shocking how many of them there are.

Not that your co-op partner is usually harmful to the experience. If you play on your own, the AI does a great job of knowing what to do and where to go. The game does have a few good co-op ideas up its sleeve, such as a sequence in which one player swims from the snapping jaws of a finned fiend, and the other must shoot it. But the good ideas are too often let down by troublesome execution: in that same sequence, your mission objective might contradict what the game actually needs you to do. Other times, one player waits around with nothing to do, while the other slashes up bio-organic weapons (that is, B.O.W.s) and finally opens a door or lowers a ladder. Most cooperative actions simply involve opening a door together. And boy is there a lot of door opening in Resident Evil 6.

In between the frequent set pieces, the quick-time events, and the cooperative door kickings, there is some mutant killing. The core mechanics are similar to those in other third-person shooters, but with the idiosyncrasies that defined Resident Evils 4 and 5. The camera stays close behind your back, movements like leaping and crouching are contextual rather than freely available, and the pace is deliberate. Shooting grotesqueries often results in new mutations: bulbous growths sprout from the necks of advancing fiends, and disgusting diminutive creatures spawn from their hosts and skitter along the floor. You can also kick and pummel your foes, though whether you prefer to keep your distance or get right in there, the lumbering lunatics react properly, knocking over other infected as they lurch from the power of your shotgun blasts. If you find the deliberate action appealing, you can devote some time to the returning Mercenaries mode, in which you and a buddy (or you alone) off as many enemies as you can before the clock ticks down to zero.

It's unfortunate that Resident Evil 6's campaigns want so desperately to take you out of the action. A single bullet from a sniper can knock you to the ground; you can either get to your feet and reposition yourself, or just shoot while you're down until the right time to rise presents itself. In Jake's campaign, getting knocked down on a particularly icy slope means sliding all the way to the bottom, and having to make the climb again. As is typical for Capcom action games, long animations need to finish before you regain control--and that kind of approach could have worked fine in a game that sticks closely to the Resident Evil 4 template.

But Resident Evil 6 is focused less on building tension than any previous game in the main series, and the over-deliberate mechanics don't always mesh well with the action-game sensibilities and highly linear levels. The claustrophobic behind-the-back camera in cramped hallways, the knockback loops, the cumbersome method of combining herbs and healing yourself--these facets once worked well to help instill a sense of terror and make you consider every action and every step. In Resident Evil 6, a game that mostly leaves its survival horror roots behind, the same attributes hinder your enjoyment.

Another set piece event? You don't say!
Another set piece event? You don't say!

That isn't to say that Resident Evil 6 is hard. On medium difficulty, you can often run right past the baddies, or just spam a trigger and punch them to death. You needn't worry about ammo all that often; the only time you're likely to run out is when you face a bullet-sponge boss and there's no more ammo to be had in the battle arena. But while you won't often die due to the level of challenge (unless you crank up the difficulty, of course), you might not be able to escape a few of the game's "gotcha" deaths. With little warning, a vehicle might crash through a barricade, and if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, you're dead. When an avalanche occurs, if you don't know to expect it, you might not have enough room to veer your snowmobile away. (This is one of several mediocre vehicular segments.) That's not challenging: that's cheap, and it's bad game design.

While Resident Evil 6 is no survival horror game, it does have a few memorably tense moments. In Leon's campaign, flashes of lightning in a dark cemetery might have you jumping once or twice, and the appearance of Resident Evil's famous zombie dogs will have you reliving the franchise's good old days. The visit to an old cathedral that follows is similarly evocative, considering its roots in the series' past. Where the game most impresses is in its production values, particularly in sound and narrative. Each campaign tells a different story--but those four stories overlap in interesting ways before they diverge again. You need to play the unlockable campaign to make sense of every mystery, but this is a great way to learn tall tales of the latest global threat.

Leon recovers from a particularly exhausting struggle with the left analog stick.
Leon recovers from a particularly exhausting struggle with the left analog stick.

Grand voice acting gives the melodramatic story plenty of weight. The talented cast makes every sullen regret, every cry for help, and every enthusiastic encouragement ring true, even in the midst of the most fantastical of events. The gross, squishy sound effects are so potent that you might try to wipe imaginary goo from your clothes. The cutscenes deserve special mention. A slow-motion shot of a bus's interior, a character's shocking fall from a great height, and a tense standoff between allies are but a few examples of the excellent cinematics that drive the story onward.

But how far can cinematics get you when the gameplay sandwiched between them is so poorly paced, so utterly misconceived, so reliant on stick wriggles and button tapping? There's a place for contextual prompts and cinematic storytelling in video games, but Resident Evil 6 is a mishmash of elements put together without any sense of care or direction. Series faithful might stumble through for the sake of story, and perhaps to appreciate those few moments that recall when Resident Evil was at its peak glory. But this long, poor sequel is the ultimate test of patience for even the most dedicated.

The Good

  • Intriguing narrative structure
  • Great voice acting and action-packed cutscenes draw you into the story

The Bad

  • Loads of bad, overlong quick-time events
  • Excruciating overemphasis on mediocre set piece events
  • Ruins the pace by constantly ripping control from you
  • Poorly executed scripted events lead to unavoidable deaths

Oh, poor Kevin. This could be the lowest point of his career. Some case study that pro reviewers should pay extreme caution and concern. RE is one of those series you could not take it lightly. It's real than many other games out there.

@jark888 The lowest point of his career is when he gives Warfighter a 6.0, while this game that definitely is longer and worth more money got 4.5. It is insulting.

@Kaz32 @jark888

Damn right. Gamespot has no sense of numbers and ratings at this point. Shitty site. Shame since I signed up in 2006 when the staff was still great. Greg Kassavin anyone? He did GOOD reviews.

So Medal of Garbage gets 6.0, making it "fair". And you get a generic as hell, boring ass story and characters no one gives a shit about. Glitchy 5 hour campaign. Yay... Then there's the bland MP to add, and bad map design.

Good reviews G Spot! Better off with GameInformer, IGN, and GameTrailers.

@BushidoEffect3 I'm going to correct myself: Modern Warfare 3 should not be played. It's a big ripoff. The Black Ops series on the other hand, needs to because there's actually effort to make the game different. At first I though Black Ops 2 will be the same as the first, but now I realize there is a branching storyline that will be affected in your approach through a mission. Let's just see if it works.

@BushidoEffect3 But we can't really judge to quickly about which site is better though. Sometimes they got it right, sometimes they got it wrong. My theory is if there is at least 1 good review for a game that has split scores, it's definitely a fun and worthwhile game, unless it's Call of Duty. That game is a no brainer that should be avoided.

OK, for those of you that hasn't played the game and believe this reviewer about bad controls and camera, I'll give you 1 game that has a very similar control and camera: DEAD SPACE 1 & 2. I'm not joking, these two games controls the same way as one another, with the exception of melees and the monsters.... wait, IT IS MOSTLY THE SAME! So by giving Resident Evil 6 bad marks because of the controls, he's mocking Dead Space as well. Wow, I am very surprised that nobody give this comparison yet. This is genius!

Admittedly I didn't like Chris' campaign, like at all, but even after that nonsense was over, I would still give this game at least an 8/10 for making it up in the other 3 campaigns. I don't really understand how this game got a review that is 89% worse than Resident Evil 5's review, when I have played all the Resident Evil games and consider 5 to be the biggest kick in the D since Gaiden (which ironically enough, still scored higher than Resident Evil 6 on this website). Don't get me wrong, I can see why people would like Resident Evil 5, but I saw a game that looked at what worked in Resident Evil 4 and said "no thanks". I don't really understand why this review is so nitpicking when most of the stuff discussed (camera movements/angles, amounts of buttons needed to be pressed during QTEs, the slowed down pace for no good reason at times, ect) could be patched over in about 2-3 patches. This game is far from "perfect", but it is still enjoyable, and still has a good story worth playing through. If you want a REAL review that isn't so crude but still discusses the topics brought up in this review, as well as some other topics, than look into Phelous' review as it isn't really bias (except maybe a bit against Chris' campaign). I honestly think Kevin VanOrd falls under 1/3 of these categories (having only looked at this review of his): 1 - He was paid to write a bad review. 2 - He wasn't paid enough to write a good review. 3 - He walked into the game wanting to hate it and then either did, or watched someone else play the game and still hated it.

Okay, I played Chris's campaign first, and half of Leon's. I have to say, Chris's was garbage, everyone has guns, way too many snipers, I died so many times because of the stupid Uncharted running sequences toward the end. The frustration of Chris's campaign results in this kind of rating. Leon's campaign on the other hand has been delightful so far, but guess what? I just hit China, only a matter of time before I have to fight more snipers. There was a complete lack of ammo in Chris's campaign, it wasn't scary or hectic, it was just inconvenient, a nuisance. Leon's campaign has plenty of ammo. This game is just a mixed bag. If I were to rate them separately, Chris' campaign gets a 4.0, even though it started okay, it gradually gets more and more annoying. Leon's campaign gets an 8.0 (which is a good rating) and I haven't gotten to Jake yet, I'm already not in favor of these Uncharted running sequences, so that'll probably bog it down. I am enjoying it regardless. I just think it was foolish to take out weapon's upgrades, as it added good replay value. Blue medallions are a joke now also, they aren't hard to find, you can't not find them.

Don't be fooled by this review. If your already interested in RE6 then i promise you will have a great time with this game. Its really good. I felt like it should of got a 9 despite me reading this review first. Which was why i was so suprised how good this game becaues this review was so misleading. Thats my experience with this game. For some people they may think it should get a 7 or 7.5 thats fine. But 4.5 is just ridiculous no matter how you look at this game. This was honestly the worst review ive ever read. So misleading.

I have to agree with most of the comments on here that this review score is extremely low. If this game did not have the words "Resident Evil" in the title (which frankly it shouldn't) it would score at LEAST a 7.5 on GS (more likely an 8.0 imo).

Sadly, this is not an RE game and I'm not sure there will ever be another true RE game. Outside a few elongated sections and sometimes impossible button-mashing or millisecond reaction time QTEs, the game is actually quite good for what it is - GOW with zombies. All the production values and quality of a AAA title are there. A metric ton of content, (mostly) entertaining gameplay, smooth controls, good acting, great graphics, great sound, etc etc.

Hey, RE is my favorite series of all time, and as an RE fan, this game is pretty disappointing in terms of giving ME what I want. But to be fair, the game itself is not bad at all, but Kevin seems to let his disappointment of the transition of the series cloud his judgement during this review.

Code Veronica FTW :-)

@saltbalsak I think this game is still considered a Resident Evil game because of the theme that it represents: bio organic terrorists using monsters they created to take over the world lead by Umbrella, or some secret organisation. But to say that it's not a horror game anymore is just wrong. There's still scares in the game that I am surprisingly terrified with. If you think RE is just good for a survival horror atmosphere, then you are pretty much wrong. Just look at the first RE. It starts as a normal zombie-horror game, then by the end of the plot it's all clear that the game is basically a battle ground experiment for combat testing by the true villain. By that point, it's clear that Resident Evil is actually a flexible genre by itself, it's not bound by the gaming mechanics to be just survival horror. If the old Resident Evil is played with the control scheme used in Resident Evil 4, would that be considered an action game or survival horror? Compared to Fatal Frame, which consists of hunting ghost with a camera, Resident Evil is a deep franchise that can be shaped into different genres. It all works well enough, until Operation Raccoon City that fucks it all up.

@Kaz32 @saltbalsak For those of you who believe RE 6 has bad plot or not good because it is not survival horror, try to give me a better way to lead this series. It's been over 15 years that RE series has fed us with survival horror. And if it continue that way, it'll be like a 35 years old guy with the mind of teenager. Like it or not things need to be evolve and mature. It's an unavoidable change which is unnecessary to regret.

@jark888 Nah, RE6 has a smart plot that involves every character in the game and it all ties up nicely without any loose ends. It's actually pretty well done.

Resident Evil is pretty much scary back then, when I was 9 years old. Now, playing back again, it's not scary anymore, or the sequels for that matter. Played it on the Nintendo DS Dead Silence or whatever it is, and it's just a regular action game now.

@Kaz32 Well, we'll have to agree to disagree then seeing as Fatal Frame is my second favorite series of all time :-).

To me, the atmosphere, pacing, storytelling and sense of forboding is what makes a game "survival horror". You can't tell me when you saw the prompt "eliminate all enemies" for the 20th time during the game and 50 zombies/ mutants/ whatever come running at you (many of the time driving tanks, flying helicopters, using sniper rifles etc.) while you mow them down with an automatic assault rifle gives any sense of atmosphere. I mean, by the end of Leon's campaign alone, you have killed more zombies in RE6 than all past REs combined.

I personally liked the old tank controls, where ammo was scarce as hell and 2 zombies slowly creeping towards you was actually more difficult to manage than RE6's onslaught. I loved RE4's slightly new take on the series, 5 was bearable and 6, while still a very good game, has, for the most part, just completely thrown the atmosphere out the window in my very humble opinion.

And to talk about atmosphere, story and flat out creepiness, the Fatal Frame series is just the best. I keep praying they'll make another one, but that's probably just old ass me talking ;-)

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly FTW

@saltbalsak I personally felt that RE is not scary after you finish RE1 and know the full story. Sure, when I played the game I was 9 and I was creeped out, but then you realize after playing the first time "huh, these monsters are just experiments huh? Prepare for your death bitches!". Even Code Veronica is not scary anymore to me after looking at Wesker kicking Chris's ass in the ending, Alexia and her crossdressing brother. Like these guys can kick so much ass, why can't I do it too? I found the old controls annoying for giving you limited ways to attack, which thankfully RE6 fix tremendously, but that's what I think. By the time of Resident Evil 6, it is expected that Leon kills a whole lot of them than all past RE combined. He's a badass now, along with the other guys Sherry and Chris. Of course they'll be more experienced.

You know what other game that's considered survival horror? Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on Lone Wolf. Try it, it's intense, you only got 1 life and you have to eliminate 30 enemies or less alone with no health. I got a heart attack because enemies comes out of nowhere and kills me, like Fatal Frame, except it's reality.

While I feel a 4.5 is a little too low, I won't attack Kevin because the game simply is lacking. It's a 6-7 game at best sadly. I was a big fan of 4, I enjoyed 5 but got tired of the gameplay, and 6 is just more of 5. I am over this formula and want classic RE back.

Glad I tried demo first...otherwise I waste 60$ on that pice of garbage that is called RE6, this game is horrible compared to RE5, is like a mediocre action shooting game, with no feeling whatsoever, sooting gun was feel pointless with no efect unless empty entire clip in one zobie...inventory is crap, camera is rotating pointless, melee now can be used regardless seting up first, but with no efect and no fun...but after that epic fail called "Raccon City" this shitty game was expected....

Even with RE6's flaws, is it accurate to say that this game is only as good as the Iron Man 2 games and provides a far lesser gaming experience than other highly anticipated failures like Ninja Gaiden 3 and Alone In The Dark? I don't think so. While it may not have lived up to the standards that we built in our own heads, to honestly say that this game is worth only two more points than Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust is a bunch of malarky.

For those who started to complain about the INCOMPLETE on-disk DLC

1- BEFORE when a game released THIS IS IT, no extra souce on top.

2- NOW developers got the option to ADD what they didn't do for a reason or another

3- DLC means EXRTA Contents you didn't pay for

4- Either the DLC on-Disc or in STORE you'll pay at the end, so save your (Mbps)

5- IF & i repeat (IF) you DON'T want IT then DON't download IT, u DIDN't pay for IT

++ Last thing, even if gamers stop buying Stupid COD "MAPS" with a stupid SMILE ã‚· on their faces ã‚· and the MAPS vanished from the Top Top Twenty DLC that have been PURCHASED , you DON'T have the right to ask Capcom not to sell NEW "Customes/Charecters/Modes"

Just finished the 4 campaigns and gotta say, Kevin must either be suffering from depression or his wife\GF just left him. This game at worst deserves a 7.5. Anybody who has played the previous games but were put off by this review. Please buy it, don't make the mistake of not buying, because this game was worth every penny.

why are you complaining that RE died at 4? if RE continued at the same gameplay ang mechanics in this generation what would you say about capcom? kevin reviewed this game and focused on the earlier part of the game that somehow sucked. but if you go further you will enjoy and forget about the negative parts of the game. so buy it. thats 20 hours of gameplay and fun survival horror. some parts of leon's chapter are scary. so survival horror still lives. sorry for the grammar

This reviewer...must have had a bad nights sleep. The game is worth a 8.0 to 8.5 rating. Its a good game. There are a few areas that I do agree bring it down to a lower rating from time to time, but those are far and few. A 4.5 rating is definitely way of the mark here.

This is good game and worth a person time to play.

This review is trash. Period. I am a Resident Evil fan since 1996. And you mean to tell me this reviewer rates "Resident Evil 6" a 4.5 just like the score for "Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City". Yeah right. This is a joke. The scale, the new innovative gameplay like FINALLY walking/running while shooting and shooting from the ground and rolling around on the ground to avoid enemies, the stunning graphics, the nice set pieces, the attention to detail, the nice locales like China, the epic boss battles, the 4 interlocking campaigns, local and online multiplayer, Agent Hunt Mode, classic "Resident Evil" feel moments like when the dog jumps out of the door in Leon's campaign and the snake battle in Chris' campaign etc., watching the citizens panic and crash cars, the updated plant combine/store/use system, the get lost in the snow storm area. So many good things about "Resident Evil 6". This guy sounds like he has a personal vendetta against Capcom or this review is political. Period! Read Weekly Famitsu's review, IGN's review and gaming-age's review for more accurate information. Thank you Capcom for another incredible Resident Evil game! Peace.

This is a very poor way of rating a game. Judging such a great game by comparing it to its previous titles. If this was come out from a different developer with a completely different title this could've earned a 9/10 from GS. Stupid Kevin, no one asked you to rate this game for "how well it's following its franchise" or "Score against previous RE games" . You supposed to rate games compared to other games in industry.

@rukshan47

This game sucks for many different reasons. Most of them Kevin already listed in the review. He DID NOT however say the game was bad because "it isn't like the previous games in the series". This game is a little better than a 4.5 though, in my opinion I would give it a 7.0 at the very most. A 9.0 would be absurd though. Leon's campaign and Ada's are just ok at best. Chris' campaign is absolutely atrocious and Jake's is mediocre.

Overall Resident Evil has sadly lost it's way. The designers in Japan see that Americans eat up games like call of duty and gears of war so they tried to cash in by turning Resident Evil into another generic third person arcade shooter with a bunch of poorly done set pieces and ton's of annoying, button mashing QTE's.

They've completely throw to the side everything that made this series popular and adored by fans. And it failed miserably. I really hope Capcom has learned their lesson with this failure and can somehow take the series back to what Shinji Mikami created, a great survival horror game with refined controls and a classic Resident Evil atmosphere otherwise this once beloved game series will be taken off life support and will die once and for all.

@rukshan47 I have to believe you didn't actually read the review because he absolutely did not do what you said. He rated the game on it's own merits and rated it poorly because of the things summed up in "The Bad" - "Loads of bad, overlong quick-time events Excruciating overemphasis on mediocre set piece events Ruins the pace by constantly ripping control from you Poorly executed scripted events lead to unavoidable deaths." He specifically said it could have been a good atmospheric shooter, but it was undone by the bad gameplay decisions.

Many of the commenters here are saying the game is bad because it's not RE1 - 3, but not Mr. VanOrd.

@rukshan47 You know, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinji_Mikami Shinji Mikami made the first Resident Evil and is the one who decided it should change in Resident Evil 4, so it's really annoying when people think that going an action route was a bad thing when even the original creator thought it was a good idea.

@Villimax @rukshan47 Well after Resident Evil 1 through CV came out it WAS time for a change. Shinji Mikami gave the series a great change... he kept all that people loved... the great atmosphere, the tension, the horror, the music and the macabre world while also refining the controls and gameplay and weapon leveling/selection. He did it right.

This is just a heap of wannabe Gears of War/Call of Duty dung throw together in an attempt to appeal to the new age kids that can't play a game without co-op and arcade, military shooter action. They should have just changed the name of all the characters and the actual name of the series and it might have done a little better.... no one would have known it had anything to do with Resident Evil if they had done that.
