Friday The 13th: The Game Review

  • First Released May 25, 2017
    released
  • PC
  • PS4
  • XONE

All or nothing.

When we published our review in progress of Friday the 13th last week, it was after a couple days of playing relatively smooth matches on PC. Since launch day, the PC version has remained our go-to option, but more out of necessity than by choice. On both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Friday the 13th has been intermittently unplayable. Yes, private matches with friends are sometimes possible, but if you wish to join up with a band of strangers online for a bout of deadly hide-and-go-seek from the comfort of your couch, you're either entirely out of luck or stuck waiting upwards of ten minutes for a match--after days of not being able to play at all.

Developers Gun Media and Illfonic are on the case, providing frequent updates that seem to be improving the situation in minor ways, but for reasons involving platform holders' patching policies and new bugs that emerge with continued testing, it's hard to imagine Friday the 13th being anything other than a half-baked experience for the foreseeable future.

Even if servers were up to speed and able to keep up with the purported influx of eager players, you could still look at Friday the 13th and ask yourself if it would have been better off released as an early access game. The answer is "yes." The dearth of maps, inconsistent frame rate on consoles, laughable animations, and shoddy collision detection are evidence of a game that isn't ready for prime time.

No Caption Provided

These issues are disappointing, but not only on the principle of meeting the expectations of a finished product. There is a good game in Friday the 13th that pops its blood-soaked head up every now and then. Its asymmetrical teenager-versus-supernatural-murderer premise is one that will speak to anyone with an affinity for survival games, cooperative problem solving, and '80s slasher films. It has great potential, which is why you can't help but be frustrated to see it left unrealized, if not outright squandered.

A single match lasts 20 minutes, and that time will either fly by or feel twice as long depending on which role you're randomly assigned to. As a camp counselor, you are set free in one of three maps pulled from early Friday the 13th films, and are tasked with either repairing escape vehicles, calling the cops, hiding from Jason until the end of the match, or killing him--an obtuse and complex process that the game never explains, let alone hints at. If you are the lucky one who's picked at random to play Jason, your only goal is to kill every counselor that you can get your hands on.

Playing as Jason is without a doubt the most enjoyable time you'll have with Friday the 13th. As the lone killer, you are essentially unstoppable, and you gain new abilities over the course of a match that increase both your awareness and mobility. Jason can warp from one end of a camp to the other, rush across large stretches of land (think Evil Dead's encroaching force), detect fearful or active counselors, and silence the haunting theme that usually plays when he's approaching a target. He will also earn the strength to bust through doors rather than hack them open, a skill that directly thwarts a counselor's best line of defense: shelter. Playing as Jason is the epitome of a power fantasy.

These shortcomings and ongoing server issues aren't easily overlooked, and work against what promise Friday the 13th shows.

When caught, a counselor has a small chance to fight back by staggering Jason with a single-use weapon such as a pocket knife or a flare gun. But most of the time, once Jason has someone in his grasp, they are as good as dead. There are several places to hide, which include tucking yourself into an armoire, a camping tent, or under a mattress, but Jason can still find you if the counselor you're controlling is prone to yelp in fear--an automated process triggered by the sight of Jason. Pick a counselor with a high stealth rating, and you'll have an easier time waiting out a match from the safety of a confined space. It's a boring but effective way to "win."

If you instead choose to escape rather than simply avoid Jason, you will have to poke around every available building in search of items like keys, fuel, and batteries to repair nearby cars and boats. Items are placed at random locations, so you never know exactly where to look. Teamwork then becomes important as you can coordinate your efforts to simultaneously search multiple buildings and report Jason sightings as you go. This is of course assuming that your fellow counselors are not only wearing chat-enabled headsets, but that they are willing to lead or be led at all. Playing with friends makes this easy; playing with strangers does not.

When you are a counselor without reliable comrades, Friday the 13th is typically boring or frustrating. You either hide or wander around cautiously in search of items, or ironically invite death to hasten your progression unlocks. The amount of XP you earn from sticking around long enough for the results screen to appear is unreasonable; you're likely to earn far more from dying and waiting than actually making an earnest effort to be a resourceful player. XP plays into a progression system that allows you to acquire new counselors and outfits as you level up, so if you want to experience the breadth of Friday the 13th's playable characters, you might as well exploit--or put up with--the match-based XP bonus early on.

It's refreshing when the counselor routine is interrupted by being assigned to play as Jason, but regardless Friday the 13th grows stale in short order. Part of this comes down to the fact that there are only three maps to choose from, but numerous bugs and presentation flaws are equally grating. Characters regularly clip through objects, get stuck in geometry, and occasionally end up floating off of the ground, entirely negating their vulnerability.

These shortcomings and ongoing server issues aren't easily overlooked, and work against what promise Friday the 13th shows. As of now, a week after launch, it's short on content and performs poorly all around, especially on consoles. The story goes that the developers weren't prepared for amount of people who wanted to jump on day one, but that does little to assuage players who were convinced that they were paying for a finished product. Despite showing potential that may one day be realized, Friday the 13th comes across as an unfinished game that shouldn't have been released in its current state.

The Good

  • Playing as Jason is an empowering experience that captures the feel of the original films
  • A team of like-minded counselors can make for a great co-op experience

The Bad

  • Spotty server issues plague both console versions
  • Poor animations and clipping issues lead to frustrating mishaps
  • Playing with a disjointed team is both boring and disheartening
  • Not enough variety to sustain long-term interest
  • Imbalanced XP system discourages active engagement

About the Author

Peter spent ten hours with the PC version of Friday the 13th but had far less success playing the game on consoles, with server issues abound that limited the availability of matches. GameSpot was provided multiple complimentary copies of the game for each platform.

A 4? Really? Get's a 9 from me! I've had no servers issue since launch. I've been fine! Except the planned maintenance they did. A funny game especially with friends or random people screaming down the mic because Jason is chasing them.

@conorgamingzhd: Fun game but far from a 9. Game has way too many objective flaws, regardless some matches here have been among the best experiences I've had in MP, community is solid too for once.

I don't understand where the minor hype came from in the first place.

This looked like cheap junk since it was revealed. Or maybe that was the point? Another cult trash title?

I've had this dream for a Friday the 13th game for as long as I've played multiplayer games. There is an amazing videogame that could be made off this license, and I even believe that these guys had the right idea. The right ideas and ambition only get you so far in this industry, however. When the whole crowdfunding craze first hit, I was as excited as anybody about the potential of it. It seemed like it might even have an impact on the way business was done in the industry. But at this point, I feel like the dream is kind of over, or at least really reigned in.

The biggest single reason for the state of this game is money. A lot of indie studios choose to use stylized, pixel, low-fi art because it's hip and cool, but also because it's way more affordable and manageable.

Friday the 13th had a kickstarter budget of 700k and I think they cleared a little over a million. You gotta pull out kickstarters fees, the costs of the kickstarter rewards, and who knows how much the Friday the 13th license cost, before you've even started the development... Game development is ridiculously expensive and a million bucks really doesn't get you as far as you would think...

@externalpower43: Out of curiosity, what's the limiting principle of that statement? What is the maximum number of people you personally know who can like a product that you are still willing to acknowledge is bad?

Or will you never acknowledge that something is objectively bad so long as one out of about eight billion earthlings claims to enjoy it?

Wow, lol. Gamers are freakin' crazy. I remember how excited everyone was when this game was first announced and the amount of fun people were having during the open beta. Now that it's finally released it's all of a sudden shit? I mean 4/10? Is it really that bad?

@hobobo: It's not even as bad as people say it is! Most people who complain are on Xbox as they only got the day 1 patch yesterday. They're already working on adding stuff to the game! That's how dedicated they are to this game! New stuff should be in the next PS4 update!

@hobobo: It's pretty bad.... very little content, tons of bugs, TERRIBLE animations and a $40 price tag.

There is fun to be had though... especially if you have a group of friends to play with.

Modern gaming at its finest right here folks.

This is why I don't buy many games day 1 anymore. Buggy, broken, disconnect, are all great works to here in reviews.

@da_chub: Resident Evil 7 comes to mind, came out and played fine, as did Nioh, and Nier: Automata (PS4).

A lot of games do release unfinished though and ultimately makes them come across as shun-worthy.

War for the Overworld is one of my favorite modern P.C. games, but when it came out in 2015 it had a lot of issues. Thankfully it was well supported since launch.

@Giygas07: you can tell the way this game was written it seemed like they were expecting this huge budget AAA title from a little kickstarter game. When they do that they only hurt themselves which can potentially be a great game if they didn't sound so elitist . OMG the animations were clunky. 5 seconds of animations doesn't kill a game.

This is actually a game I'm glad i bought before i seen the review. IF i seen 4 and the list of problems this writer said i probably would of avoided it like the plague. But in reality the problems aren't as extreme as its being made out to be. Yes there has been problems. But not enough that should deter anybody from picking it up.

Own and played the X1 version, and this is a fair review. I couldn't believe IGN scored this a 6.9...NOONE should take IGN reviews seriously.

And I'm a huge fan of the film series....and this game just doesn't have depth, legs, or variety, something I increasingly worried about it, as it came closer to release. I helped back this game 2 years ago. I played for a few hours on launch night last week, and then a bit more early last Saturday.

Haven't touched the game since. It's just not that fun, in general, to be the counselors, which you usually are. Even if you try to work with people, communicating is difficult, and it's a crapshoot even if you add people for private matches, what kind of cooperative experience your actually going to have. If your one of the first to die in a 7 counselor game, you could be sitting there with nothing to do but spectate for nearly 30 minutes.

And you don't even get that much XP, as the review said, for waiting it out. And it takes a lot, 500xp, to buy a counselor upgrade, and it's totally random and often isn't even anything that useful. Buying new Jason kills is a cool concept, but I rarely ever got to play as Jason to even make those feel worthwhile.

Only 3 maps, no offline or singleplayer, it often seems like the whole game as a counselor boils down to a drawer search game, as that's where the items randomly are that you need to escape. And it doesn't matter what you find or fix if other counselors aren't really helping.

I know offline bots are being worked on..but what I would've really enjoyed is if they'd done a single player story campaign, with actual narrative, where you play as just Jason, have to fight/avoid cops, have all kind of counselor kill challenges, etc....actually get to leave the camp and do things like kill on a ship (Friday 8)....the game just feels bare bones, and like I said, I backed this, waited 2 years for it, and within 2 days I was preferring to play other games I already had.

The story goes that the developers weren't prepared for amount of people who wanted to jump on day one,

We didn't expect it to be so popular? Why make games if you feel that you can release unfinished games out there.

What a bad way to learn a harsh lesson.

@cyberpunk_2077:

It massively went past them. They talked about it. They took the beta, tripled it, then added a good bit more for cushion. It wasn't enough.

They were ready for 50k concurrent users and 75k flooded in.

That's quite a lot of concurrent users for a kickstarter game at launch.

Not making the game single player when we all thought it was didn't help I think.

There is lots of other games to look forward to and when a game gets a 4 puts me off more.

I dont do MP anyway, apart from forza lol.

Called it. Totally called it. And I'm tired of hearing the "single-player is coming" talk, because it won't really be an impressive single-player. It's gonna be single-player like the new Battlefront had single-player, just a cheesy "missions" kind of thing. I understand the backers to this game want to defend their investment, especially since they're fans of the films most likely, so I have sympathy for them. But I just had a bad feeling about this from the beginning. Maybe they'll turn it around, I'd be happy if they did, but I'm not banking on it.

Must be a hard game to review. It had so many problems at launch (and still does have quite a few), and it's very repetitive in nature. However I find it extremely addictive despite it's shortcomings - it's an extremely fun and rewarding multiplayer experience when everthing works. It really depends who you're playing with, as the game pretty much is as good as it's players. I've clocked in about ten hours as well as the reviewer, and with the New patch out now, I'm definitely gonna double that over the next few days. They still really need to work on the quick play option and matchmaking, but I'm pretty sure Gun Media is on it with the next patch.
