Friday The 13th: The Game Review

  • First Released May 25, 2017
    released
  • PC
  • PS4
  • XONE

All or nothing.

When we published our review in progress of Friday the 13th last week, it was after a couple days of playing relatively smooth matches on PC. Since launch day, the PC version has remained our go-to option, but more out of necessity than by choice. On both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Friday the 13th has been intermittently unplayable. Yes, private matches with friends are sometimes possible, but if you wish to join up with a band of strangers online for a bout of deadly hide-and-go-seek from the comfort of your couch, you're either entirely out of luck or stuck waiting upwards of ten minutes for a match--after days of not being able to play at all.

Developers Gun Media and Illfonic are on the case, providing frequent updates that seem to be improving the situation in minor ways, but for reasons involving platform holders' patching policies and new bugs that emerge with continued testing, it's hard to imagine Friday the 13th being anything other than a half-baked experience for the foreseeable future.

Even if servers were up to speed and able to keep up with the purported influx of eager players, you could still look at Friday the 13th and ask yourself if it would have been better off released as an early access game. The answer is "yes." The dearth of maps, inconsistent frame rate on consoles, laughable animations, and shoddy collision detection are evidence of a game that isn't ready for prime time.

No Caption Provided

These issues are disappointing, but not only on the principle of meeting the expectations of a finished product. There is a good game in Friday the 13th that pops its blood-soaked head up every now and then. Its asymmetrical teenager-versus-supernatural-murderer premise is one that will speak to anyone with an affinity for survival games, cooperative problem solving, and '80s slasher films. It has great potential, which is why you can't help but be frustrated to see it left unrealized, if not outright squandered.

A single match lasts 20 minutes, and that time will either fly by or feel twice as long depending on which role you're randomly assigned to. As a camp counselor, you are set free in one of three maps pulled from early Friday the 13th films, and are tasked with either repairing escape vehicles, calling the cops, hiding from Jason until the end of the match, or killing him--an obtuse and complex process that the game never explains, let alone hints at. If you are the lucky one who's picked at random to play Jason, your only goal is to kill every counselor that you can get your hands on.

Playing as Jason is without a doubt the most enjoyable time you'll have with Friday the 13th. As the lone killer, you are essentially unstoppable, and you gain new abilities over the course of a match that increase both your awareness and mobility. Jason can warp from one end of a camp to the other, rush across large stretches of land (think Evil Dead's encroaching force), detect fearful or active counselors, and silence the haunting theme that usually plays when he's approaching a target. He will also earn the strength to bust through doors rather than hack them open, a skill that directly thwarts a counselor's best line of defense: shelter. Playing as Jason is the epitome of a power fantasy.

These shortcomings and ongoing server issues aren't easily overlooked, and work against what promise Friday the 13th shows.

When caught, a counselor has a small chance to fight back by staggering Jason with a single-use weapon such as a pocket knife or a flare gun. But most of the time, once Jason has someone in his grasp, they are as good as dead. There are several places to hide, which include tucking yourself into an armoire, a camping tent, or under a mattress, but Jason can still find you if the counselor you're controlling is prone to yelp in fear--an automated process triggered by the sight of Jason. Pick a counselor with a high stealth rating, and you'll have an easier time waiting out a match from the safety of a confined space. It's a boring but effective way to "win."

If you instead choose to escape rather than simply avoid Jason, you will have to poke around every available building in search of items like keys, fuel, and batteries to repair nearby cars and boats. Items are placed at random locations, so you never know exactly where to look. Teamwork then becomes important as you can coordinate your efforts to simultaneously search multiple buildings and report Jason sightings as you go. This is of course assuming that your fellow counselors are not only wearing chat-enabled headsets, but that they are willing to lead or be led at all. Playing with friends makes this easy; playing with strangers does not.

When you are a counselor without reliable comrades, Friday the 13th is typically boring or frustrating. You either hide or wander around cautiously in search of items, or ironically invite death to hasten your progression unlocks. The amount of XP you earn from sticking around long enough for the results screen to appear is unreasonable; you're likely to earn far more from dying and waiting than actually making an earnest effort to be a resourceful player. XP plays into a progression system that allows you to acquire new counselors and outfits as you level up, so if you want to experience the breadth of Friday the 13th's playable characters, you might as well exploit--or put up with--the match-based XP bonus early on.

It's refreshing when the counselor routine is interrupted by being assigned to play as Jason, but regardless Friday the 13th grows stale in short order. Part of this comes down to the fact that there are only three maps to choose from, but numerous bugs and presentation flaws are equally grating. Characters regularly clip through objects, get stuck in geometry, and occasionally end up floating off of the ground, entirely negating their vulnerability.

These shortcomings and ongoing server issues aren't easily overlooked, and work against what promise Friday the 13th shows. As of now, a week after launch, it's short on content and performs poorly all around, especially on consoles. The story goes that the developers weren't prepared for amount of people who wanted to jump on day one, but that does little to assuage players who were convinced that they were paying for a finished product. Despite showing potential that may one day be realized, Friday the 13th comes across as an unfinished game that shouldn't have been released in its current state.

The Good

  • Playing as Jason is an empowering experience that captures the feel of the original films
  • A team of like-minded counselors can make for a great co-op experience

The Bad

  • Spotty server issues plague both console versions
  • Poor animations and clipping issues lead to frustrating mishaps
  • Playing with a disjointed team is both boring and disheartening
  • Not enough variety to sustain long-term interest
  • Imbalanced XP system discourages active engagement

About the Author

Peter spent ten hours with the PC version of Friday the 13th but had far less success playing the game on consoles, with server issues abound that limited the availability of matches. GameSpot was provided multiple complimentary copies of the game for each platform.

I REALLY wanted to like this game. After trying it out for all systems the xbox version was by FAR the most glitches. Also trying to find a game is nearly impossible unless you look for private matches! Again, REALLY wanted to like this game, but sadly I went back to dead by daylight.

Lol at all the white knights. Look I agree the fun to be had with this game is a 7 even an 8.......when it works. Try and be objective and put the fanboyism aside please. We're going on two weeks and more than half of the player base can't play the game at all.....great if you can get on and play it but over more than half of the games player base can not play the game. Tell me if you would give it a 6 or a 7 if you've owned it for 2 weeks and you were lucky enough to play a handful of matches and that's assuming the entire game didn't crash. The fact that the game mostly doesn't even work properly or WORSE can't be played at all plays into the rating and you need to understand that and 4 is a generous rating for something i've been able to play ...maybe half a dozen times in 14 days. Small development team aside and their hard work which is to be commended, the game doesn't work.

I have had a lot of fun with this game. 4/10 is a bit harsh to me. You have to realize Gun Media isn't that big of a developer like these other AAA developers are. I have backed this since the start on Kickstarter and they have come a long way. Sure the game is buggy but just give it time. I have never seen such a better community and the game developers are constantly doing updates and informing us every step of the way on their Facebook page which is great. This summer they are going to release a single player mode which might be a lot of fun as well. I just don't think any of these review sites gave them a chance to get up and running before bashing it. Like others have stated I have not laughed or screamed this much in a game in a long time. Me and my friend play it every night and it keeps getting better and better. It's almost like you get hooked on it and try to keep playing to keep unlocking new perks , Characters and Jason's. I would say this game should at least get a 6 or 7 out of 10. Again just give the game some time and to keep up to date with stuff check out the games facebook page.

@ckrieg88: that's no excuse! The size of a company shouldn't dictate quality. If You are incapable of releasing a stable game than you are culpable. Especially if you charge nearly full price for a broken and content lite game

@ckrieg88: I understand that you're hopeful for this game's potential, but you can't expect someone to give a score that reflects what a game might be. The quality of a game upon release is a huge factor in scoring and while you may not be deterred by it many others will find those same issues extremely frustrating and people deserve to hear those facts before buying. I'm glad that Gun is actively and frequently patching the game and updating the community but that only gets you community cred, not a higher review score. If you want to make that happen then you need to have your shizz together a bit more upon release.

This is disappointing. I was hoping it would be a team based version of the slasher mode from GTAV. It was so well done there that I was looking forward to a game that made it a focus. Never mind.

Despite the bugs, I've found this game a lot of fun to play. I'm having a hard time coming up with a game that encourages and rewards ACTUAL cooperative play as much as this one does. If you find a group of people who are willing and eager to work WITH you, this game is very fun to play, even as a counselor. Get with a group of people you play with regularly, and that fun improves more over time. Now that we've figured out how to kill Jason, it's far more engaging to play as a counselor. But I will agree - get with a group of people who don't have headsets, or just want to do their own thing, and it's nowhere NEAR as much fun... unless you're playing as Jason.

It's not the best game I've played - not even the best game I'm playing right now - but from a multiplayer standpoint, it's one of the best I've ever played - period - as long as you can see the potential behind the current list of bugs. It's definitely worth trying, and definitely worth MUCH more - from MY perspective - than a 4/10.

I would give it a 6-7 out of 10. I really wanted this game to be loved, as much as I wanted to love it. Friday the 13th and myself go way back, and I always have a soft spot for the indie/crowd-funded dev that puts their heart and soul into their work.

Opening day for the game was bloody and buggy (no pun intended,) but once the servers stabilized, it was, and can be, a fun and scary ride. Playing as a counselor is hit and miss, like any multiplayer game. When you get a cool group that wants to work together, it's great. Otherwise, it's a bunch of lone wolves trying to call the cops or play Tommy Jarvis, or just hide in an obscure corner of the game and wait it out.

Playing as Jason is wicked, just what your dark fantasies can imagine.

The terrain graphics are good, especially on "epic" level of detail. Camp Crystal Lake was re-created with TLC, so many details like the cabin décor, the cars, the lights and fog, even the lake itself. Character animations...well, could use a little polish. 3rd person controls can be clunky at times too. It took me a good 15 seconds to enter a cabin and find the right 'hot spot' to close and lock the door. Plenty of time for ol' Jason in pursuit to catch me and do his thing with me.

The sound is excellent, and all the feature sounds and music from the series are used well. It's especially fun to play as Jason and hear Mother give her boy her 'warm encouragement.'

Good news moving forward is it seems like the devs at Gun Media are committed to fixing and refining the game. And if sales were good enough, I'd love to see some expansions like Tina from Part VII or even Jason X.

It's not the best game ever made, but for fans of the series, it's a worthy ride. And hopefully will get better. Ki ki ki ha ha ha

I was playing this for a few hours last night and here are some of my thoughts:

1) I've never laughed and screamed so much playing a video game in my life and I've been playing video games since Commodore 64.

2) I've never met nicer people in a community before. Usually, if it's not playing with my personal friends, I won't hop on the bluetooth or add people to my PS4. I've added tens of people and none of them are assholes. Just a bunch of guys and gals who want to have fun and compete as Jason.

Is it buggy? ABSOLUTELY! I bought the game the Friday it came out and was unable to play until Monday. I was angry about it too. But man, is it fun. I did NOT expect it to be this much fun. It's hide 'n' seek in the dark. It's leaving people behind and not leaving them behind. It's having 3 guys tell you to drive and keep going and then someone jumps out in front of your car as they're running away from Jason and you nail them full force while everybody starts to laugh uncontrollably. No game is ever the same. It's buggy but it's all uphill from here.

I disagree with the 4 out of 10, respectfully. Right now, I give it a solid 7. Once singleplayer is added and the bugs are patched, it'll be an 8. Easily.

Really not sure what this is all about. I'm having few if any of these issues. And the reason the game is so vague about HOW to do certain things, it's because the developer wanted to maintain the tense nature of being hunted down. If they would have had a series of tutorials on how to do accomplish every aspect of the game it would be game breaking, nobody would be playing the it as intended.

I'm pretty happy with the game on PC. Glad I didn't go console. I would call it a little rough around the edges but an overall fun experience personally. There is a learning curve though.

Alright i have no idea what you guys are talking about this game runs great on PC i have not had one bug.Games have been fun i have never waited more than ten seconds for a match it sounds like none have you have touched this game since it was patched. I have played games like Dead By Daylight and i get more bugs and repetitive trash in single a match then I've ever had with this game.

Why should devs bother putting any effort in making this a good? Its a game that lets you go around brutally killing young women. The premise itself is enough for the hordes of cave-nerds to throw their mother's credits cards at it. Easy money.

It's 2017. Releasing a game with animations that remind me of Manhunt which was released in 2003 is just pathetic. The Friday the 13th series deserved a AAA release...and instead it got this trash.

Yes the game was broken when released but I wouldnt call it unplayable at least not for the xbox. With the update that just happened theres no worries about drop connections or server time outs. The game does still crash after 5-6 games though but with the xbox LFG system you can always find a match or host one with ease. Also I found playing solo counselor for the beginning part is better for covering more ground mics are needed though for the most part. As jason my 2 cons are the "ring around the rosey" crap the counselors can do in houses around furniture to certain jasons is just dumb. Also how some counselors will just hide for like 11mins of the game should be a limit before showing a marker when you stay in one spot. I'd also like to say that the developer illfonic isnt really known for having an abundance of players on their games so their servers got hit hard. they were excepting 10,000s and they got well over that on xbox alone. And a recent AMA they said it was going to be like a game preview where they would hopefully just add more as time goes on. So yes for a launch it was a 4 at best but a week later at least on the xbox its a fun & functional game worth a 7.5/8.0 depending on what content is still left to come out. IMO.....

I know it's confusing seeing people defend a game that essentially released broken so zealously, so I'll attempt to explain...

It was mainly Friday the 13th diehards looking forward to this game, and if you look at the previous Ft13 games you would understand that their expectations are INCREDIBLY low. Considering where the bar is, this game isn't terrible to them; it's decent.

I haven't played the game, but I've watched it and heard enough to verify that the connectivity and matchmaking issues aren't made-up in this review. Beyond that the collision detection and animations are shoddy as hell. A broken game can still be fun depending on the player, but the reviewer owes it to the readers to make this game's issues clear as day, and score it accordingly.

@joejoe1639: So you havent played the game and yet you still are trying to make a comment on the game off of a video you saw?.... WTF?!..........Im not even a die hard jason fan and i think the game is really fun i play usually like 5-6 matches a day and its fun, on xbox there really isnt all the problems that this reviewer made it seem thanks to LFG system. Also ive seen worst game launches from AAA companies so honestly this wasnt that bad. I think the reviewer was just expecting a lot more from a game preview/indie game. ( and just to name one launch worst was Diablo 3 error 37 that shit happened for 3 days to me.)

@coolmastaj: I'm sure plenty of people think the games fun, but you don't need to play it to see the nonstop clipping, hit detection and animation issues, coupled with MANY people confirming the matchmaking problems.

From a technical standpoint it's bad, and that's completely fair game for the reviewer. Whether or not the game is fun enough to make you overlook the technical issues is subjective; apparently for this reviewer the fun didn't make up for it.

Also, this game wasn't priced like an indie game; the amount of actual content available on this release is quite low for $40.

@joejoe1639: It's actually quite high for $40. Three maps, multiple Jasons, Counselors, unlockable content and perks. Considering how interactive the maps are, makes up for the low count because every playthrough really is different. Compared to games like Evolve or Left for Dead 2, this $40 offering is quite decent.

It is so dumb to release a game in such bad state and condition. It is obvious that they should have hold on to this game and fix the countless issues that the game has before releasing it. You can pretty much say that this game still needed months of development and additional time to fix this broken game up. why would they releasing it now makes no sense regardless if people wanted it now or not, the game was not ready.

@angrycreep: I know its a really shitty reason but probably cuz of funding and they knew people wanted it and would buy it. Now they have some $$ backing them they can hopefully fix it. The xbox and pc got an update just before the weekend which fixed a bit.
