I'm sorry, I tried...I really tried to like it...and I'm a huge resident evil fan...
User Rating: 4 | Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City X360
Over the years, the resident evil franchise had numerous face lifts and reboots. Though some were a welcome improvement, there were others that fell flat. Operation Raccoon City could have been so great, instead, it opted to join in the bandwagon of "in it for the buck" mentality. Literally, it could never have been so obvious. Operation Raccoon City was just in it for the money. Developers were "in-your-face" trying to tap into the multi-player fps, squad-base or tactical shooters' successes. It could have been forgivable if they would have delivered a "defining" game. A game that not only tries to get into the action but defines it. Sadly, Operation Raccoon City did not reach expectations. The finished game unfortunately disappears among greater titles it tries to emulate. I mean c'mon, if the developers shamelessly tried to copy shooters, at least, copy them properly. Even the melees were sub-par to what defined RE 4 and RE 5, the command prompts that proved so satisfying in its execution. I am a huge Resident Evil fan. I have been playing it since its initial release, the beloved RE 1. Though I was equally surprised and taken-aback with the different directions they took in RE 4, I welcomed it nonetheless. By the time RE 5 was released, I began to question this direction they were taking the franchise. But because I was such a huge fan, I decided to enjoy it. RE 5 was enjoyable. It wasn't RE but there were things to shoot at and zombie-hybrids in it. I should be able to suck it up. Now with the release of ORC, my heart fell. What were they thinking? Sure they went back to the real zombies. But what the heck...they weren't fun to shoot at. I tried and tried to enjoy it but bleh...it was not there anymore.... What made RE4 and RE 5 fun, was the ability to use guns to your advantage. ORC threw that aspect right out of the window. Were they trying to piss fans off? Or was it a license to make the game "more fun." RE 4 and 5's appeal relied on precision. Heck that is probably the reason why the sudden off-shoulder view they made in RE 4 in the first place. The guns in ORC were not that fun to use. There was no distinction...they all sucked to use because you could basically use any automatic to breeze through the game. The scope rifles were useless and unsatisfactory when used on human enemies--no head explosions during headshots. Which brings us to human enemies a bullet sponges...geez, no headshot bang no satisfaction. Though ORC tried to make gun handling realistic with shaking and with recoils, it destroys what makes RE fun at the first place. Scoped guns were not really "usable" when it comes to shooting zombies...you just can't use them because they weren't practical. But we know that in previous REs, we could basically use only scoped rifles and basically finish the game. The magic was gone and it may take a while to bring it back. Capcom has a lot to make up for with RE 6, they dug enough ditch for them fall into with this iteration.
Bottom line: ORC is fun during multiplayers...as have been said many times by reviewers...but it's a multiplayer not worth writing home about.
