Halloween, Game Heroes, Uncharted 2

Halloween is coming up and I can wait. I like Halloween and I usually send the last few week planning out my Halloween night i.e. what scary game I'm going to play or what scary movies I'm going to watch. Last year I spent Halloween playing Dead Space. It wasn't really the scary but it was still a pretty awesome Halloween night. This Halloween, I'm stumped. I can't find a decent horror game (that I haven't yet played) to play on Halloween night. I don't want to play a scary game that I've already played because it's just not the same. Plus I don't want to see a horror movie because playing games are better.
Anyway the next few weeks is going to be a bastard looking for decent horror games.

On a lighter note…
What do you think of the all time greatest game hero?
I personally think it's bullsh*t because I was routing for the main man… Solid Snake. Even though he got kick out, by bloody Gordon Freeman, I was like ok whatever. But what got me a little bit more annoyed is Nathan Drake getting kick out by Pikachu? Nathan deserved to go further than that.
Kratos beating Cloud, ok they are both cool characters but come on, Cloud beat the great Sephiroth for crying out loud. What did Kratos do? defeat a few Titians… anyone can do that lol.
Jak and Daxter getting the asses handed to them by Fox McCloud… that bulls**t. Fox McCloud is a tit.
ICO losing to Banjo & Kazooie.
Dante losing to Pac-Man… WHAT THE F**K?
Ok now fair enough I don't really think Master Chief is a great character, but to lose against Bub & Bob… now that's stupid. Master Chief should have won that hands down lol
Link is getting beating by Gordon Freeman???????????????
Basically after Snake got kicked out I stopped voting, but see if Gordon Freeman wins the Greatest Character Ever… I'm going to go bloody ape sh*t.

Lastly…
Uncharted 2 got a 9.5/10 score here at gamespot (plus an awesome overall score from other game site). I'm really looking forward to it now. Not because gamespot gave it a 9.5/10, I don't go by critic or game site reviews. I tend to go and read player reviews (good reviewers anyway). The reason why I'm looking forward to the game is because it's Uncharted… COME ON NATHAN DRAKE.

Top Ten Scary and Creepy Game Moments

My clarification of a scary game is something that mentally scares you. Something that makes you think and confused whether you saw what you saw or heard what you heard. Something gory and something jumping out at you, I don't classify (to a certain extent) as scary. Yes they can be scary at first, but after a while you get used to it. Hearing something you can't see or seeing something that disappears (no matter how many times you play it), now that's what I call scary.

10. Bioshock - The Creepy Bunny Mannequins (PlayStation 3)

So bloody creepy.

9. F.E.A.R. - Door Slam (PC)

F.E.A.R. was a scary game and there where so many scary moments, but the one that gave me the most fright is something you may not expect. I like to play games with surround sound and with quite reasonable volume (especially with horror games). F.E.A.R. was no exception. The part the scared me the most was at the start in a small hallway. At the end of the hallway was an open door leading into a room. I calmly moved towards the end of the hallway without really expecting anything and as I neared the door, the door slammed in my face and I could hear a baby cry. One: I did not expect the door to slam in my face. And two: I hate hearing a baby crying in a creepy place, it's just down right creepy.

8. F.E.A.R. 2 - Children's School (PlayStation 3)
I was a wee bit disappointed with the fear scale with F.E.A.R. 2 but it was still a great game, and it did have one of two scary moments. The scariest moments for me would have to be the children's school. The dark hallway with all the lockers… that was creepy.

7. Project Zero 3 (Fatal Frame 3) - Bathroom Mirror (PlayStation 2)

Although the game wasn't as scary as the second one, it did have it's scary moments. The scariest moments for me (that I can remember) is the bathroom moments. First you see blood on the mirror, then hands coming out from the mirror, then you see someone's feet standing behind the shower curtain. What made them scary (to me away) is that there not really noticeable. I remember standing in the bathroom in front of the mirror, just looking around when I noticed the hands coming out from the mirror. The small hairs on my arms and neck where going ape s**t.

6. Silent Hill 4 - Eileen's Creepy Head (PlayStation 2)
Definitely Eileen's big head. Her eye's following you around the room. The sound of her moaning… bloody creepy.

5. Silent Hill 2 - First Encounter With Pyramid Head (PlayStation 2)
There are many moments in Silent Hill 2 that creeped the hell out of me, so you can imagine how hard it was for me to pick one. I think the most scariest moment for me would have to be… probably the first time you get a glimpse of the Pyramid Head in the apartment building. First you hear the grinding noise of the Pyramid Head dragging his huge blade (of course at first you have no idea what the sound is). Then at one point where your walking down a hallway you come across bars that block your path. Behind the bars in the distance you can see an image of the Pyramid Head standing there watching you (again you have no idea what or who it is the first time you play), which is very creepy.

4. Silent Hill 3 - The Haunted Mansion (PlayStation 2)
Definite creepy as hell.

3. Condemned 2 - The SCU Building (PlayStation 3)

The SCU building where you get a scan. After the scan is finished the building turns into an nightmare that is very creepy indeed.

2. Project Zero 2 (Fatal Frame 2) - Mayu in the Cell (PlayStation 2)
The scariest moment for me (never mind everything else) would have to be the bit there the two twin girls get separated again. Mayu (The none playable characters) gets trapped in a cell. When you take control of Mio (Mayu's twin sister) you are meant to leave Mayu and search for a key to get her out from the cell. As you walk away from the cell Mayu cries out " don't leave me again" in a scary deep voice. Now I know that may not sound scary to you, and there probably are scarier moments in the game, but that one was probably the only one that actually made me freeze.

1. Condemned - The Creepy Mannequins (XBOX 360)
Condemned was scary to me because it was a mental horror game. A game that played with your mind and from the creators of F.E.A.R. There are two moments in Condemned that had me s*****ng myself. One of them being you find a one armed man (who you assumed to be dead) in a locker. As you go in close to take a photograph, the b*st*rd lets me know he's not dead by scaring the living s**t out of me. But my most scariest and creepiest moment in the game is definitely the creepy mannequins that follow you along an area.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scary and Creepy Moments that just didn't make the cut.

Resident Evil - Dogs (PlayStation)

Hallway… dogs… window… shat myself lol

Dead Space - Creepy Laugh (PlayStation 3)
To me Dead Space was not really that scary at all. At first it was quite creepy, with monsters jumping out at you but after about half way thought, the game was more gory than it was scary. It was still a great game don't get me wrong. The scariest bit for me is near the end. As you walk down a hallway you hear a really weird and very creepy laugh. As you walk round the corner you see a woman surrounded by dead body's shoot her brains out. Very creepy and the only time my spine tingled.

Silent Hill 3 - Creepy Mannequin (PlayStation 2)
There is a moment in Silent Hill 3 where you come across a room with mannequins. One mannequin is up right on a stand. As you walk round the corner you suddenly hear a scream. As you walk back round the corner to where the saw the mannequin, you'll find the mannequin is covered in blood with it's head on the floor.

Silent Hill 4 - Creepy Henry (PlayStation 2)

This is a moment you will and can only see if you room is possessed by evil spirits. When your room is overly possessed, there is a moment in the game where you will noticed blood dripping from the peep hole on the front door of the apartment. When you look through the door you will see Henry (the main characters in Silent Hill 4) standing on the other side of the door twitching, which is very creepy.

Silent Hill 3 - The mirror room (PlayStation 2)
There is a room in Silent Hill 3 that has a strange wall size mirror. After entering the room, the bathtub in the room will start filling up with blood. The blood start over flowing and starts to cover the walls in blood. The reflection of Heather (the main characters) on the mirror also starts getting covered with blood whilst you and the reflection background remain the same. Very weird and very creepy.

Project Zero 2 (Fatal Frame) - The broken neck ghost (PlayStation 2)

There is a ghost of a woman lurking around with her neck twisted and hanging to one side. She bloody creepy.

Condemned - One armed man in a locker (XBOX 360)
Hate that guy.

Condemned 2 - The Bear (PlayStation 3)
A big ass grizzly bear that you have to run away from.

Silent Hill - Lisa's Death (PlayStation)
Sad… and creepy.

F.E.A.R. Extraction Point - The death of Holiday (PC)
There is a point in the game where you and Holiday enter and abandon building. After you enter the light suddenly go out. After a brief moment of hearing weird noises, the lights start to come on and of repeatedly. Whenever the lights came on you could see a brief shadow of weird monsters in the room. After several moment of the light going off and on, you witness a violent and brutal death of Holiday. All within game-play, and nothing you can do to help poor Holiday.

My opinion between games today and games from back in the day.

Now in order for you to understanding this, blog, this journal or my opinion (whatever you want to call it) your going to need to have good experience or knowledge with older generation games like myself. There are 7 generations within the gaming world and for every generation (more so with the older generations) there are a variety of different consoles.

The first generation was back in 1972 - 1977 (a generation to old for me) A very simple (and somewhat redundant) time for gaming.

The second generation was 1976 - 1984. There where a few console released within this time but the Atari is probably the most well know.

The third was 1983 - 1992. The generation I grow up in. This is the generation the took the gaming industry to the height of it's peek for entertainment and to many people it's considered the best generation for gaming. It's also the generation with some of the most well know console, NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), The Sega Master System and The Atari 7800.

The fourth generation was 1987 - 1996. A generation that consists of great console like the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), Sega Mega Drive, Sega Game Gear, Nintendo GameBoy etc.

The fifth was between 1993 - 2002. The PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn etc, as well as not so good console like the Nintendo Virtual Boy.

The sixth generation was 1998 till about 2005. The PlayStation 2, XBOX, Nintendo Game Cube and the Sega Dreamcast.

The sevenths generation 2005 till this present time. The Sony PlayStation 3, XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii, as well as PC gaming, the Sony PSP and Nintendo DC hand held consoles.

This blog is not about me stating what generation I though is best. It's purely an opinion about old generation games between this generation. I'll be talking about the difference between them in a few sections.
First the visuals. Today visuals is basically the main aspect in attracting gamers. I don't think visuals make a game great. It's the beauty inside the counts (to a certain extent). I don't mean this in a disrespectful way but, most gamers of this generations only care about the visuals. Don't get me wrong there are times where I've seen a trailer to a game and said "Wow the graphics look awesome!" But that doesn't mean the game will be. With older generation game (especially within the second and third generation) visuals purely relied on the gamers (your) imagination. If I was to draw a box, and within that box I drew a triangle with small circle around the triangle, and I said that the triangle was a small space ship and the small circles where asteroid placed within a box that signifies space, without imagination all you would see is a box with a triangle and circles within it. Within the fourth generation the graphics where purely based on colours i.e. Mario and Mega Man etc, until the early 90's where 3D was introduced.
Sound design has changed a lot as the generations can and went. Within the first two generations sound (again much like the visuals) where purely based on imagination. You would hear a sound effect and you would have to use your imagination to imagine what the sound effect represented. The third and fourth generations concentrated more on background music as well as sound effect. The fifth consisted on both sound effect and music, but also voice action and have been used in about 90% of games over generations as well as in this present time.
The two main aspects that have changed a lot between games today and games from the past, are game values and storyline. Storyline became a big part of games back in the fifth generation with the coming of the PlayStation etc. Now there are storylines with old games like Mario, Mega Man, Link etc, but it's the way there told that has changed. Old games like Mario and Link etc, you where giving a series of just enough dialog to keep you in tune with the plot, but not to enough to keep you away for the game-play, which is the main aspect with playing a video game "The Game-play". Within the fifth generation (and essentially in this day and age) stories are told through movie cut scenes. Games are becoming more like movies or reading a book. The difficulty in games today are way different than games from older generations. Game today being made purely as stories and are made so gamers can pick up and finish without really much of a problem because company's are caring more about gamers seeing the story. It's like reading a book. You would stop reading half way through the book because the book is to difficult? You would stop a movie half way through because you thought it was difficult or you where stuck? (unless the book or film is poor and you couldn't stand reading or watching it anymore). Old games like Mario, Links, Castlevania, etc, these are games you would play for month (not now obviously). Games where more addictive back then. Games today like Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid, even Final Fantasy are getting less longer and less replay value. Games like Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, Fallout 3, Resistance, Killzone, Gears of War etc, are game I have finished within a week (individual of course) and or within a weekend for most of them, in between work and my studies. Whilst games like Mario, Link, Castlevania took me months to finish. Maybe I was a poor gamer back than but that not the point :). When I finish a game, It's like ok next game, whilst like back in the day when I finished Mega Man, or Mario, It definitely felt exhilarating because you really bust your balls to try and finish the game. Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of my favourite games ever and I feel that it's a good choice to explain what I mean. When I finished MGS4, I didn't feel exhilarating because it wasn't really that challenging. Yes it was an awesome game (A BLOODY AWESOME GAME) just not really challenging enough for me to say "YES I FINISHED IT!!!" Come to think of it I don't think I've felt like that in a long time. Playing a game to collect trophies or achievements doesn't really count as the same feeling as the good old days I would say. Collecting a trophy for completing a game on hard mode is a good feeling, but complete Mario and getting nothing but a congratulation message at the end… now that's a great feeling.

Overall my favourite generation (for gaming) is the third and fourth purely because of my memories. Game today are obviously better, but when your talking about feeling… the old generation is better.

Thanks for reading… if you read this anyway :) LOL.

20 Random game questions

1. What is the most disappointing game you've played in 2009 (So Far), and why?

Resident Evil 5 purely because I was expecting something more in terms with the game-play. It's basically Resident Evil 4.

2. What is the worst game you've played in 2009 (So Far),, and why?

Skate 2 because it definitely the only game I've played in 2009 that I gave a low score. I'm not really a fan of skateboarding game, which your probably thinking now that I'm being a bit unfair toward the game, but I did give the game a try, a good try I might add (a full day try) and I thought it was just a bad game. The controls where stiff and the camera views where awkward… don't hate me.

3. What is the best game you've played in 2009 (So Far), and why?

Probably Killzone 2. Why? Because I can't think of any other game.

4. What game would you like to see turned into a film, and done well?

Every time someone asks me that question I always say Metal Gear Solid, but today I going to say a different game. Metal Gear Solid to me is pretty much a film anyway that consists on more cut scene that actual game-play, and to me it's perfect the way it is and it doesn't necessarily "NEED" to be turned into a film. Even thought I would love to see Metal Gear Solid on the big screen, I definitely would have to say… Bioshock. I do know that a Bioshock move is in the works, but Bioshock is a game I'd like to see turned into a movie done well, and actually based spot on with the game.

5. What is the down right worst game you've played this generation, and why?

Hard one because there are a few, such as Mercenaries 2, Lair, Kane and Lynch, etc but I would have to say… Mercenaries 2. The game was just one big terrible joke. At least the other games tried (to some extent). Mercenaries 2 just sucked.

6. What game series that you love, ended up poorly as the series continued and you wish the series would just end because you don't want it getting any more worse, and why?

Silent Hill. I love Silent Hill and after Silent Hill 4 (after the real creators split up), it's really been going down hill. I'd rather them scarp the series than continuing it and making it even worse. Same with Resident Evil.

7. What are your "TWO" favourite games ever. Two games that you would defend to the end?

Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy VII

8. Out of your two favourite games, you must pick one and destroy the other with a hammer. What game would you save?

You sun of a B***h. How the hell am I meant to pick one. Final Fantasy VII has been one of my favourite game for the past 12 years. Metal Gear Solid is one of my favourite game series. I can't pick. I hate this question. (20 minutes later) I would save Metal Gear Solid 4 and destroy Final Fantasy VII
(Whisper Whisper "I've got Final Fantasy VII on my PSP anyway so oh well" Shhh)

9. From the top of your head, what is the most beautiful games (visually) you've seen (i.e. a background scenery, artistic visual etc)?

Flower (A game from the PlayStation Store)

10. From the top of your head I want you to say a name of a game when you hear the term, "Great Game Soundtrack"?

Final Fantasy series

11. From the top of your head I want you to say a name of a characters when you hear the term, "Sexy"?

Tifa Lockheart (Final Fantasy VII)

12. From the top of your head I want you to say a name of a game when you hear the term, "Best game ever"?

Final Fantasy VII

13. Do you think games that feature an online multiplayer should have multiplayer trophies/achievements, and why?

No I don't think they should purely because I like collecting trophies and I hate trying to get online trophies.

14. Out of all the games based from films, which is your favourite, and why (Game must be film based with the same name and characters etc)?

I don't particularly like games based on a film. Just because I love the Iron Man movies, doesn't mean the game will be awesome (which is not). I honestly can answer this question.

15. Have you ever picked up a game purely because the cover art was appealing and bought it without knowing anything about the game. If so what game?

Folklore for the PlayStation 3. I was looking for a new game and I came across Folklore. I had a read at the back of the case, and then bought it. Which turned out a rather good game

16. Have you ever been embarrassed about playing or buying a certain game that you didn't want your friends knowing about it. If so what game?

No really, I mean I do like playing wee arcade games and puzzle games that a few of my friend may not be into but I'm not embarrassed by them. Final Fantasy X-2 for example I consider a girls game, but I have played it and I was not embarrassed by it.

17. Have you ever played a scary game that you actually turned off because you where just to scared to play. If so what game?

Project Zero 2. Yeah call me a wimp if you want, but that game was scary. Not so much now though.

18. What do you think is the most overrated game of this generation?

Sorry, but I would have to say ether Grand Theft Auto 4 or Halo 3. Both games are quite good (to a certain extent) but I don't see the big deal with them. There are far more better worthy game out there.

19. What do you think is the most underrated game in this generation that deserves more?

The most underrated game… hmmm… There's quite a few actually, like Call of Juarez 2 which is a very good game that got over shadowed from all the flaws from the first game. F.E.A.R. 2, Red Faction Guerrilla, etc but I would have to say the most underrated game would have to be (from the top of my head)… Folklore. Ok your probably think Folklore… WHAT? But it was quite a unique game in some way. Fair enough it wasn't a great game, the game-play was quite easy and the level design was quite linear. It did have many flaws and no way would it stand long against the other great and superior titles out there, but I still do think it should have got me credibility than it did. Folklore showed of a feature on the PS3 that really, no other game has even attempted to come close as Folklore did. And that is… the SIXAXIS control. Folklore is probably the best game out there so far with the use of the SIXAXIS feature, which it does rather well and for that I think Folklore deserved a little bit more. Plus it has a decent storyline.

20. I want you to pick a game and pretend that you own that game. Pretend for a minute that you can do and change anything about that game. What would you do different to the game to make it better for yourself and other gamers?

Well there are a lot of things I would do different to a lot of games. One game in particular would be… the Guitar Hero series. The Guitar Hero series (to me anyway) is one big waste. I for one like Guitar Hero, pretending you're a rock n' roll star is awesome but seriously, do they need so many different games? What I would have done it perhaps make one CD game and add downloadable contents for every song and keep adding more here and there instead of making a completely new game and having to buy it (like Guitar Hero 5) which is extortion. Now of course Activision don't give a toss about us gamers. In the end it's all to do with money which I think it's bulls**t. In every Guitar Hero game, there are about 5 maybe 10 song I actually like, and the rest I'm not really interested with. How easy would it be just to go to the PSN store and buy a specific song you want and that's that. Making a separate Guitar Hero based as an album like Aerosmith (No matter how good Aerosmith is) it's a blood joke. You can transfer songs from Guitar Hero Smash Hits and World Tour into Guitar Hero 5, but it costs money so, what's the bloody point in that? Are you really going to waste money and transfer a song from World Tour just so you can play it in GH5?… I would put World tour on instead. You want to know the real point to all this? Money…so Activation can hover money of you. It's bulls**t.

First Impression #3: Wet (DEMO)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wet - First Impression (DEMO) by Simon a.k.a. [TheDevilDweller]

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wet

Think, Japanese stlye, Kill Bill, Sin City and The Matrix all put into one.

I never really knew much about Wet. I remember seeing an announcement trailer for it awhile back and I though it look quite good, but I never took to much interest init and it certainly was never in my must play list. The demo come out last night and I gave it a go not really expecting much will the game, and for that, it wasn't that bad. I was shock to find out what Wet was published by Bethesda Softworks. I love Fallout and The Elder Scrolls so I become somewhat curious when I saw the Bethesda Softworks logo. I mean it probably want get a high rating, but I'm not going to fully judge it, because it's a demo.

The two things I had problems with where the graphics and game-play. I know I said I wasn't expecting anything from the game, but I thought the graphics would have at least been great, but instead they where just decent. Texture and object look flat and dull. The artwork is awesome but again, I'm not going to judge a book by its cover.

The game-play is pretty strange but not bad. The first level (in the Demo) is 3rd person shooter. Whenever you do a jump, run up wall, or slide and press the R1 (Shoot) button simultaneously, you automatically go into a slow motion mode. The main character Rubi, uses two handguns and a sword. If you use the shoot button without jumping, sliding and running up walls, she just shoots like normal, in normal time speed. Rubi only use two handguns in slow motion and only one in normal time, which I find quite weird. Also while in slow motion mode, her left hand automatically aims at near enemies, while you control and aim her right hand… again, quite weird, but it dose work and it's not at all bad.

The second level you play as Rubi as everything is now red, black and white. It's pretty cool but confusing as the same time. I had no idea what was going on. You move through the level hacking and shooting your way through enemies as white blood get smeared everywhere.

The third and last level in the demo is a car chase scene, where your jumping from one moving car to another by pressing the right button that flashes on the screen, dodging other cars and objects flying your way, whilst shooting bad guys shooting at you from cars. It's pretty sweet.

From playing the demo, I don't think Wet will get a considerably high score for me. The demo was fun, the game-play was decent, the graphics where ok, the voice acting is really cheesy and, well… weird.

"Taste my special souse!"

It wasn't bad, but not much to win me over to buy it, however I will give it a rent.

First Impression #2: Batman: Arkham Asylum (DEMO)

Batman: Arkham Asylum - First Impression by Simon a.k.a. [TheDevilDweller]

batman

I really didn't know what to think or expect about Batman: Arkham Asylum when I first heard about it. I grew up watching Batman as a kid, but in this day and age, to me Batman no longer resembles the greatness for the old days. I didn't find ether Batman Begins and The Dark Knight films stimulating, which reduced my interest in the Batman game close to nothing. After playing the demo all I can say is, it's not bad. I like how they used the old ****of the original Batman in the game. The joker as well as the atmosphere looks great, but I did have one minor problem with batman... he's really BIG? Like the Hulk big!!! I laughed when I first saw him. Other than that the game looks great. When I played the demo, I could not help but think of X-Men Origins for some reason. The gameplay and combat system are quite good and fluent, but I do think it will turn out like X-Men origins. The X-Men Origins demo was great, much like with Batman, but the full game of X-Men Origins was really repetitive, which I think will be the same with Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is a game I'll probably pretty much rent.

First Impression #1: inFAMOUS (DEMO)

inFAMOUS

The inFamous demo is finally out and I got to play it. First off inFAMOUS is a game I'm really looking forward to, and after playing the demo and getting to experience the game-play, I'm looking forward to it even more. The game-play is nicely done. Almost everything (If not everything) is interactive and how you interact with something is very impressively animated. The game-play is fast paced and can be quite challenging with enemies coming at you from everywhere. The demo lasts about 15mins or so but you can make the demo last longer just by doing whatever you want, and what I mean by whatever you want is to blow and shoot s**t us. The graphics are great, not as great as many other games out there but certainly impressive. The sound effects are awesome, the first thing I noticed is when you run you can hear your backpack and belts moving, it's so cool. Anyway, I was happy with the demo and I'm looking forward to the final game.
If you haven't yet played the demo, if your looking forward to the game, or even if your don't know anything about the game you should give it a try. Best download of the week.
