'They were banking on hot girls to sell the movie' used to work well in Conan movies 10-20 years ago but in this strange new weird and woke world, where the 'new normal' is being hunted mercilessly for any implied sexism and flayed alive for having the audacity to challenge the insane liberal lunatics (most of which are deluded self important journalists!), hot girls to sell movies is an instant fail.............apropos, it didn't work with Ghostbusters 2016 (his writes reaching for the barf bucket!!!)
It's really astounding that Sony released a movie based on a fringe comic book character, that I suspect most people have never heard of before, just like Morbius.
While Kraven the Hunter is slightly more well known, it is highly probable this movie will also fail at the box office.
Perhaps Sony should have polled fans of the MCU or even just Spider-man and Venom fans to get a good approximation of how these fringe character movies would fare.
I tried the demo and I rapidly got bored of it (after 1 hour!), mostly because of the not particularly interesting characters but also because it was trying to replicate the mundane and tired Call of Duty shooting model, albeit with magic.
I don't agree with the single player commentary. The market, especially PC, is saturated with multi-player games with more or less the same copy & paste tedious formula. Games are often more successful if they get the player invested in the lead character(s) and good story telling, the MP aspect is often just a 'bolt on' and it tends to replicate the same type of very limited options/modes, that are found in every other games with MP.
It must be so very difficult for game writers to create something new and original, that will appeal to the masses and not be either a padded out grind fest or worse, a dull, uninspiring story lasting 3 hours and the rest is just the usual multi-player garbage that is just replicated over and over.
I'm grateful that games studios (except for EA and Ubisoft) focus their efforts on quality AAA single player games, such as the PS5 top 3 (Horizon, God of War and Spider-man) as well as Rockstar with GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2. Its a great pity Rocksteady didn't continue with the same quality they produced in all the Batman Arkham games but I'm sure they will return with a great AAA single player game, after the Suicide Squad debacle.
I suspect the apparent 'hate' was not directly aimed at the actor and he really shouldn't have taken it to heart. The character was (and remains so) nauseating, extremely irritating and likely only appealed to children under 8 years of age. At the time of The Phantom Menace, it is plausible many original Star Wars trilogy fans found this character ridiculous and deeply offensive to their memory of the cherished initial 3 movies.
Its very sad, this was aimed at Ahmed Best directly, who was simply plying his trade, to get paid.
However, this does not disguise the fact, the character is galaxy wide disliked and most likely made the original trilogy fans cringe (and probably still has that effect today).
I have enjoyed Marvel and DC movies in equal measure.
Some were great, some were good, some adequate, and yes, some were just terrible (Blue Beetle and Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2).
They mostly all ticked the requisite boxes in terms of entertainment, which is the overarching original purpose of movies, that some seem to have forgotten, notably the legion of vagarious, overzealous, opinionated and tiresome so called professional 'critics'.
However, I'm in no way enthused about Mr Gunn, in particular, changing major DC characters and re-inventing them yet again. It is frankly tedious and unnecessary.
I know some will respond and suggest I and others give the 'new DCU' a chance, although I suspect Mr Gunn and Mr Safran have struck a raw nerve with their perceived collective mismanagement of DCU and possibly alienated many DC fans.
Apropos, only time will tell if this aspect proves to be detrimental to the future Gunn/Safran DC movies.
The written psychological profile of the top tier Star Citizen crowd funders would be compelling reading. I would suspect a psychological analysis would reveal they are fringe social outcasts, who thrive in dark places (parents basements) and if they do work, they sustain themselves with junk food.
They console themselves in the deluded belief that spending $48k on a game is justified and those who do not align with their unorthodox way of thinking are envious and bitter.
Of course Cloud Imperium management relies on these sub humans to continue funding Star Citizen to keep them living a wealthy and prosperous lifestyle (and probably laughing at how truly gullible and easily influenced some human beings really are).
Renslayer was a very minor character at best and presented absolutely nothing in the way of menace or dread, as Thanos did. To suggest Marvel would even consider such a minor and very insignificant villain to be a nemesis of the Avengers is ridiculous, the character poses as much threat as one Chitauri. Loki himself was much more of a clever and devious opponent for the Avengers, until the Hulk trashed the 'puny god'. I can just envisage a comic moment where the Avengers face off against Renslayer and just laugh hysterically (as would the viewing public).
Although I have to commend the Gamespot author for such an amusing article!
@ironhorse89: The challenge for Marvel (and it's a big one) is that it reached a point with the last 2 Avengers movies that they cannot, despite their best efforts, produce movies that are of such a high quality as those 2 movies. They really are the benchmark for many Marvel fans and of course, what has followed since has not matched them.
With the possible exception of the Hulk (and I'm a fan of the original Hulk and not what the MCU have reduced him to) Thor and Spider-man, the characters that have followed in the original Avengers wake clearly do not have the same mass appeal.
That stated, it must be incredibly difficult to create new, original, super hero movies that are not copies of what has gone before. For all those who whine and complain about the current MCU, I would bet my bottom dollar they would all fail to do any better and so the complaints are really tantamount to hypocrisy (possibly without even realising it).
I absolutely concur with your comment about DC. It's sad that Gunn is doing this, especially as many of the actors and dare I say even Batfleck did well in their respective roles. The challenge for DC was always being compared to what has come before (such as Nolan's Batman) but also trying to match the Avengers success and also be different to the Avengers (so not to be accused of plagiarism).
Despite the over zealous spite and negativity about the DC movies, specifically the Justice League, it was unfair, as most comic book/super hero fans had used the Avengers as the benchmark and DC could never be seen to try to emulate Marvel in any way.
It did result in a perceived flawed end product but at the basic level, movies are created to entertain, which often so called 'art' movies fail to do at a spectacular level (as they are just dull and generally insipid.
However, Gunn (especially Gunn) and Safran have made a rod for DCs own back by arrogantly alienating what fanbase the DC movies had by removing the actors who were actually appreciated by those fans and then announcing they will start anew with a predictable and well worn formula, which pretty much alienates every one else.
I'm certainly not a clairvoyant but the 'noise' from Gunn does not bode well for DC and given the typically out of touch media perceive a wane in superhero interest (which alas some of the brainwashed readers actually believe), this so called reboot looks to be an epic fail waiting to happen.
Only time will tell if this prediction is wide of the mark.
