OK so first blog entry, i want to dedicate my blog to music reviews and overall thoughts, to start off i am going to link digital dreamdoors ( great forum) top 50 (theirs 100 but this is enough) metal albums list, and rate each album myself, and add some comments as well. after this i will be rating individual bands and albums as i listen to them, or classics i want people to look at. but this is a good way to get a lot of albums out of the way and show my opinions.
1. Black Sabbath- Paranoid 4/5 better than black sabbath but still has a few boring songs
2. Iron Maiden- Number of the Beast - 2.5/5 ( 3 to be nice) very overrated album and overall a digression from killers, number of the beast, hallowed be thy name and run to the hills are great, the rest are forgetabble and very basic.
3. Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath - 4/5 what can i say, the first real metal album, its kinda slow for my taste but i have utmost respect for tony iomi's playing and the fact that when this came out absolutely nothing sounded like it.. is amazing.
4. Metallica- Master of Puppets -4/5 often said to be the best thrash album of all time, a statement i highly disagree with ( it is for mainstream listeners that dont delve in too much ) metallica is slowing down, but becoming more prog. theirs a few songs here that are not really upto metallica calibur, the thing that should not be is complete filler to me, sanatarium dosn't compare to fade to black , leper messiah and disposable heroes are good but theirs something missing in them. this album sounds very basic at times in the riffing. orion and damage inc save this in the end
5. Iron Maiden- Powerslave 5/5 this was for the longest time my favorite metal cd, PERIOD, theirs no filler here and it seems for the first time and maybee only time here, Maiden has an album that seems like all the songs just fit perfectly, the theme is just great, this is their last true ****c album although somewhere in time is still solid. tracks like aces high and 2 minutes to midnight are ****cs and concert staples, powerslave is one of my personal favorite songs with one of my absolute favorite solo's ( the solo is the opening on piece of mind's still life ) rime of the ancient mariner is an epic in all definitions of the word, and the thriplet of back in the village, big orra and flash of the blade are all great songs that are very overlooked.
6. Judas Priest- Sad Wings of Destiny - 5/5 SAD WINGS OF MOFO'ING DESTINY is all i can say, this album was the real turning point in metal in my opinion, at the time of this release the only other metal band was sabbath, having released their title album, paranoid and masters of reality. sabbath had mastered the darkness of metal, but were still playing slow, very basic songs, and ozzy's voice cant really be called beutiful.. well who wouldve guessed a band that sounded like a wanna B led zeppelin on their debut would come out with such a ****c in 1976. sad wings includes two of the best metal epics , or should i even say rock epics of all time in one album, victim of changes and dreamer deciever both are amazing and can stand up to stairway to heaven anyday in my book. songs like tyrant and the ripper are the first of their kind and influence god knows how many bands to come. halfords voice is amazing here and on all subsequent albums. long live priest the metal gods
7. Slayer- Reign in Blood - 5/5 raining what? RAINING BLOOD. this was the heaviest thing when it came out and was a HUGE influence on death metal, even with these garbage grindcore bands running around these days reign in blood still is recorded as one of the fastest albums ever, chiming in at an average of about 330 beats per minute. this album is not for someone new to metal. it will tear you apart. ****cs like angel of death and raining blood are amoung thash's best songs. newcomers to slayer shoudlnt start with this album, its too fast and you will not understand what is going on, you will hear noise.. you need to slowly work your way to this masterpiece.
8. Megadeth- Rust in Peace 5/5 ( a higher score if possible ) my favorite metal album and the pinnicle of thrash, if this were released the same day as master of puppets, their would be absolutely no competition between metallica and megadeth, MEGADAVE would have all the glory he rightfully desirves, well at least all the true metalheads know that dave mustaine holds the thrash metal crown when it comes to technical metal. this album from start to finish ( ok maybee not lucrieta and dawn patrol) rips your face off with amazingly technical riffs, while not as agressive or angry as peace sells it definately makes up. songs like poison was the cure blow your mind with their rhythems, while the solo in tornado of souls will make you rewind 5 times to hear it again. holy wars and hangar 18 show dave mustaine and marty friedman ripping solos all over the place and are concert staples. take no prisoners does just that and is a great song to sing along to and get pumped up. rust in peace polaris is my personal favorite here, awesome lyrics, great agression. WARHEADS WILL ALL RUST IN PEACE. sadly megadeth must rust in peace after this album as they sold out and went a more mainstream stripped down version of themselves that dosnt thrash.. altho the last two albums are making a bit of a comeback, we'll see what this years album has in store megafans :P
9. Motorhead- Ace of Spades 4/5 a must have for seminal speed metal and just an overall ****c
10. Metallica- Ride the Lightning5/5- metallica's best album, while a bit slower than kill em all, its extremely more mature both lyricly and playing wise. creeping death, fight fire with fire, the title track and trapped under ice all rip.
11. Iron Maiden- Piece of Mind 4/5 Maidens second best album, theirs a tiny bit of filler here but songs like the trooper, still life, die with your boots on, and where eagles dare make up for this
12. Ozzy Osbourne- Blizzard of Ozz 4/5 - rhandy rhoads the guitar god saves ozzy's horrible voice and turns him from a bad singer into a great band.. until he dies of course.
13. Metallica- Kill 'Em All 5/5 the start of thrash metal, kill em all is amazing and completely different from the rest of metallica because of dave mustaines influence and writing of half the songs, this album is much faster than the rest of metallica's work because of this, but back when dave was still in it, they were even faster, get a good copy of no life till leather to hear the difference, dave mustaine runs circles around kirk hampster and james, but this is still an amazing album
14. Judas Priest- Screaming for Vengeance 4/5 not as good as stained **** not as influential as sad wings, but still an amazing offering by priest which would be a shame to skip
15. Dio- Holy Diver - 4/5 dio leaves sabbath and releases this, a good album, but the dungeons and dragons stuff can only be tolerated for soo long
16. Black Sabbath- Master of Reality 4/5 sabbaths 3rd release, geting a bit faster and less boring but still a little slow for me
17. Queensryche- Operation: Mindcrime -5/5 the best prog metal album. that is all, you must listen
18. Rainbow- Rising 5/5 richie mofo'ing blackmoore's rainbow, need i say more? no.. just listen to it.
19. Megadeth- Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? 5/5 equally good as their later album rust in peace, its more agressive, and angrier with darker lyrics, lead guitarist chris poland rips you to shreds with ****cs like black friday and wake up dead, this as allmusic says is the most listenable metal album from beginning to end, and agree completely minus bad omen which i cant really get into, peace sells the song while a bit slower than the rest is just a great anthem, dont miss my last words.. it might be the last song but its one of megadeth's best
20. Venom- Black Metal -4/5 Venom. such an overlooked band, a gigantic influence on thrash metal and black metal, these guys might not have been too good skillwise but they made up with great songs and a ****that for its time was all to their own
21. Mercyful Fate- Don't Break the Oath 5/5 mercyful fate, all hail the king.. king diamond another often overlooked band which had huge influence on bands like metallica and megadeth with their post priest/ maiden speed metal and pre black metal shrieked vocals of the king. songs like a dangerous meeting and the oath are amazing, dont skip this album
22. Judas Priest- Painkiller 5/5 - judas priest's albums of the 70's all get 5 stars from me, but everyone knows they sold out with british steel in 1980 and from then on just tumbled down the road. but they came back in 1990 out of nowhere after the mediocre albums ram it down and turbo with what? A THRASH ALBUM. this album stands up there with the pinnacle of thrash albums, and amazingly they retain their priest sound 100%. listening to the songs you cant imagine this would be anyone but priest, not from the vocals, the guitar work itself, while thrash still has the melodic nature of priest and can still kick your arse. the title track is absoltuely amazing. it is so heavy that the legendary death metal band Death covered it on their album sound of perseverance, and its just as heavy as the rest of the songs on there, and does not seem out of place.
23. Iron Maiden- Iron Maiden - 4/5 maidens first album came out the same year as priests demise with british steel, while iron maiden isnt as good as priests ****c stained **** the budding band with their limited vocalist shows amazing potential and of course later deliver, songs like iron maiden and phantom of the opera hold their own today, the latter showing some of the best solo'ing their is in metal
24. Pantera- Cowboys From Hell 3/5 post thrash or groove metal, pantera has a great guitar player in dimebag, cowboys from hell is a great song, but this type of metal isnt really my cup of tea.
25. Motorhead- Overkill 4.5 /5 a little overrated but still necisary listening, the title track has been covered by soo many bands and even influenced the great bay area thrash band overkill's name
26. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son 2.5 /5 , some people love it, some people dont, i personally dont.
27. Judas Priest- British Steel - 3/5 while their most sucessful album, not really their best, breaking the law and grinder are good, metal gods is a ****c, but the rest is kinda meh, stick to their 70's stuff
28. Death- Scream Bloody Gore 5/5 the first death metal album, slayerlike playing with chucks death voice, extremely influential album and can hold is own with reign in blood
29. Metallica-...And Justice For All 4/5 - a great prog/ thrash album from metallica, their last good album some songs like shortest straw are just horrible. but the title track, eye of the beholder, one, to live is to die. are amazing and have some great complex stuff going on.
30. Black Sabbath- Volume 4 4/5
31. Slayer- Seasons in the Abyss 5/5 my personal favorite slayer album. while i love the first 5 and would give them all 5/5 i like to think of their progression like this. show no mercy is pure speed, hell awaits is almost touching on death metal at parts and builds complexity, reign in blood is all out speed and evolves hell awaits **** south of heaven was slower, and slayer did this on purpose, they knew they couldnt do better than reign so they went another route, still a great album, and seasons is the perfect mix of all of their **** imo. i dont need to name songs here, they are all good but the title track especially is great.
32. Iron Maiden- Somewhere in Time - 3.5 /5 after powerslave we see maidens decline, theirs still some great stuff here, the title track is one of my personal favorites, extremely fast and as always listen for harris' awesome bassline in this one. sea of madness is also great, along with wasted years. loneliness of the long distance runner is soo bad its almost sad. filler exists here
33. Diamond Head- Lightning to the Nations 3/5 a great nwobhm album, everyone knows diamond head for am i evil, the song metallica would later cover and make a key part of their concert setlist ( it and seek and destroy are almost always encores / am i evil being alternated later with last caress some nights)
34. Helloween- Keeper of the Seven Keys, Pt 2 5/5 keeper of the 7 keys pts 1 and 2 are pretty much the first real power metal albums, and what power metal albums are rated against. skip dragonforce and listen to the real stuff, the song halloween especially is great
35. Death- Human 5/5 a ****c album by death, this album was one of their more prog.
36. Black Sabbath- Heaven and Hell 4/5 the first of two albums with dio songs like Heaven and hell, and die young are great, but theirs some filler here.
37. Anthrax- Among the Living 3/5 not to big of a fan of anthrax
38. Dream Theater- Images and Words -5/5 arguably dream theater's best album, one of the best of prog metal, its right up there with operation mindcrime and their own scenes of a memory
39. Megadeth- Killing Is My Business...And Business Is Good! 5/5 the best thrash debut album and one of the most agressive thrash albums their are. its technical , its fast, mustaine's snarls and growls are soo evil. every song here is good, every song, true props to a guy who can take such a non metal song like these boots are made for walking, and turn it into an arse kicker. mechanix is what the four horsemen used to be and should be, even faster than mechanix on metallicas no life till leather. my favorite song here is loved to death, the riff is absolutely amazing. the title track also has soo many different riffs from mustaine its rediculous. buy this album, worship this album
40. Venom- Welcome to Hell 4/5 the second album from venom better than black metal, the title track is great and so are most songs, listening to this makes kill em all not seem like it came out of nowhere, you can tell metallicas influence easily in the riff to welcome to hell.
41. Iron Maiden- Killers 4/5 2nd IM album, better than the first, way better than number of the beast, murray and smith play some awesome neo ****cal stuff here, the guitar work really blows you away if you listen closely, the title track like all maiden title tracks is great. this album dosnt know what it wants to be, on one hand its punk , with an unarguably punk lead singer, but when they shut him up and the guitarists solo, the neo ****cal metal comes out, and the duo never really sound the same, stripping down the solo lenghts and overall song complexity for more looping riffs in the bruce dickenson era, understandable as bruce dickenson adds soo much to the band with his vocals, its a shame to shut him up.
42. Metallica- Metallica 3/5 - the sellout album, selloutica, sell them all, everyone says sandman is soo good, its the most basic riff and stripped down song they have, its sickening, its not bad but it cant hold a flame to ride the lightning, the ballads here actually are pretty good for what they are, unforgiven and nothing else matters are good songs, its just sad to see metallica die out. while they wernt anywhere close to the best thrash band, they shure were an influence and put out only quality work.. skip this if your a real metal fan, get this if you want something to play for your girlfriend in the car.
43. Megadeth-Countdown to Extinction 4/5 megadeth's sellout album, but not as much as metallica. the songs here while nothing as fast and technical as rust in peace, or angry and pissed off at the world as peace sells are actually pretty good for the kind of metal they are. all the songs until countdown to extinction are good and some actually great. sweating bullets makes up for its loss of speed for just pure funnyness and mustaines awesome voice, not to mention talking to himself, captive honor is funny until the song actually starts " LIFE? WHAT DO YOU MEAN LIFE? I AINT GOT A LIFE!" skin on my teeth is good, and countdown itself is. while this isnt thrash and this isnt real megadeth, its still not bad but listening to it sitll makes me feel sad that dave isnt ripping out tunes like my last words, black friday, and tornado of souls anymore
44. King Diamond- Abigail 4/5 all hail the king
45. Yngwie Malmsteen- Rising Force 5/5 this is what metal guitar virtuoso albums were rated against back in the day, a great technical virtuoso album
46. Sepultura- Beneath the Remains 5/5 absolutely perfect, one of the best thrash bands and one of the best thrash albums ever, this should be in the top 10
47. Rainbow- Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow 4/5 richie blackmoore man, with dio, nuf said. great album
48. Opeth- Blackwater Park - 4/5 opeth is everything, death , prog whatever you want to call them they are good
49. Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath 4/5 its sabath, its ****c, not perfect, but a must listen
50. Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger 0/5 i havnt listened to this, nor do i plan to anytime soon.
