The letter 'A' - Duplicate Guides

Hi All, Just reposting a post that I made in the duplicates union board here so that the people who aren't looking at the board every day still see it..
As we now have the ability to view all people whose name begins with a certain letter, I've started to work through and look for duplicate listings. I'm currently working through all people whose names begin with the letter A (what's 333 pages of people in the grand scheme of things? ;) ). I'll try and avoid anything that I think anyone else is already dealing with...I'll post them in the union forum and if nobody claims them, I can go back and fix them. If anyone else is already working on A (which I don't think they are from what I can see) let me know and I'll switch to another letter!
Newbie.

Newbie returns.

Hola All! I'm back from my vacation, doing some catching up on TV.com between the real life stuff that has to be done (laundry....woohoo! :| ) Hope you've all been good while I've been gone! I've responded to any comments that I missed last Friday on my previous blog (so if you commented in the last week....your response will be there now :) ) To anyone who has posted in the thread in the User to User forum - I'll add your updates to the main thread as soon as I can (probably tomorrow) - I want to catch up on the fixes/updates from the last week before I make any changes to the thread so that I can fix everything in one go. :) Newbie.

It's Vacation Time!

Hi All, Just a quick note to let you know that I'll be away on vacation for a week between Sept 19th and Sept 26. You may hear from me during that time if I'm able to log in, but if the site won't work on my phone I'll see you in a week's time! I fully expect you to be horrible to the staff (I kid, I kid!) and get them to make the new site super by the time I return! For anyone having trouble with the new layout, you may want to check out the thread that I have created in the User to User forum with a few tips for navigating through the site, and the change (the tv.com change that is...). It's a work in progress but the basics are up and I hope it helps! If you have feedback, I'll be around tonight and tomorrow morning (GMT) so I can make changes to the thread before I go...after that I'll pick up any new comments when I return and will make the appropriate changes to the thread. One last comment before I leave...just remember...the new TV.com is nowhere near as bad as the new facebook!! There is always a silver lining my friends!! I shall leave you with a little music: All Along the Watchtower - BT4/Bear McCreary. Have a great week...behave yourselves!

The Palindrome

Hola All! How goes it? Are we all fine and dandy today? Let's have a little TV.com related blog for a change, shall we? If you glance over to the right you will notice that my total submission number is now a pretty palindrome: 10001. Yep, that's right, I broke that 10,000 mark & it is now official...I need to get out more. ;) For my efforts, I now have an extra little emblem:
The breakdown of my 10,001 subs: There have been a lot of duplicate guide fixing subs in there, lots of episodes of The Today Show and my numerous other "fixer-upper" guides - I'm a sucker for the fixer-uppers. ;) My subs have been spread across: 751 shows 1214 people My first sub was to Karri Turner on Feb 12, 2006 and my last was to The Today Show on Sep 9, 2008. My submission history contains 501 pages worth of subs. Exciting huh? ;):P
Submission Spree: A few of you know that I do lots of Duplicate Guide type work. My latest submission spree, however, is not directly dealing with Duplicate Guides. I've been trying to fix all those guides which only have the forename for a person and are often used for five or six different people (generally reality TV Shows whose official sites often only list first names in the cast lists). I've spent the last couple of days fixing up the cast lists for a couple of shows which had around 20 cast members between them who were listed under only their forename. I'm working my way through some more guides now and I'm determined to beat the problem of single name only guides. It takes a lot of investigation and beating my head against the wall, but it's really satisfying to know that I'm making sure the credits for those six people sharing one guide are split up correctly. Of course...I'm also finding duplicates as I do these fixes...I'll never escape them. ;)
TV.com problems: In other TV.com news, there are a lot of problems being experienced with the search functionality currently. There seem to be two main problems; The first being that some users are unable to search for anything at all in the main site search. The second problem being that users are unable to search for newly created IDs. TheOldBill has some great hints and tips in his most recent blog which may assist with people experiencing the new person search problems.
Anyway, I think I've bored you enough for today with my TV.com stuff, so hop along, visit other blogs! Enjoy your evening/night/morning wherever you are and whatever you are doing!

Pancakes with Newbie.

A girl's gotta have a little sweetness in her life now and then (or every day ;) ) so tonight's sweetness for Newbie was pancakes. Little Teespoon wanted a photo of the finished product but I went a step further and took a picture of the whole process. I like to share, so I figured I would blog about my pancake making. I got my recipe from here if anyone wants to make their own. First you need to sieve the flour and sugar (not really necessary but I like sieving things!!) into a fair sized mixing bowl. I halved the recipe and had about half of the mixture left over after making 6 pancakes. Next up, you need to measure out your milk (I recommend doing this in a jug) and break an egg. Mix together the egg and the milk. Next up, mix together your milk/egg concoction and your flour/sugar combo. (yuck!) Your mixture probably won't look this dark - mine is darker because a) The kitchen was dark when I took the pictures and b) I used brown sugar which changed the colour of the mix. Okay, we're all ready to cook! Heat up a pan and add a little butter, allowing it to melt down: Next what we need to do is a little test, partly to check the heat of the pan and partly because it allows you to get a feel for the thickness of your mixture. Drop just a little mix in and allow it to cook through: My mixture was a little bit too thick for my liking, so I added just a splash more milk and mixed it up: Time to get cooking!! I'm using a different pan this time than usual, but I can generally fit three pancakes to a pan with room to flip them over. Grab a big old spoon and fill it with mixture, then drop it into a spot in the pan. Do the same twice more. The mixture will spread out to make pancake shaped dots. Keep a really close eye on your pancakes. You're looking for little bubbles to appear on the surface. When you see the bubbles you need to flip those suckers over. Mine are a little more done than I'd like cause I was taking photos, but not as bad as they usually are (I generally burn the heck outta the first set): Cook them for a little longer on the other side and after maybe 30 seconds check if they are done. They won't fall apart - don't worry about lifting them to check if they're cooked. Slide them outta the pan into a bowl and cook up your next batch. I like chocolate. No secret there. I like chocolate pancakes even more. I decided to make my second batch chocolatey. It's real easy - just throw some cocoa powder into your mixture and stir it all up. The amount of powder you use is up to you, I just give it a good shake and mix up and see if it looks chocolatey enough: (In that last picture you can see the size spoon I use to put my mixture in the pan) The process here is just the same - three spots of mixture, cook till you see bubbles and then flip 'em over. Chocolate ones are easier cause you can't see that you've burnt them  Throw them in the bowl, cover them with whatever you choose and tuck in!! (tad blurry, I was eager to eat!) Another great recipe idea is to chop up some Glace Cherries and throw them in with the chocolate pancake mixture - chocolate and cherry pancakes are really good! So there we have it, cookery with Newbie! Not my best effort, but pretty good considering I was taking photos at the time! Go, run away, make pancakes! ;) Thanks for stopping by!

Haaave you met....me?

Hello, hello my lovelies. How are we all today? It has been a few weeks, so I figured it was probably time for me to look into the corners of my brain and come up with a new blog. Once again, I have nothing to say, so excuse the meandering! In the last few days I got a bit trigger happy with the mouse button and bought a few new bits for my computer. My parcel recipient (read: dad) is not very happy at the amount of times he had to open the door (Well it's not my fault that I have to work and the parcel deliveries always happen at 8:05am when I'm already there, is it?) ;) Anyyyyywhoo, I am now in possession of a new computer headset, a new webcam, new mouse, new keyboard and a set of headphones for my MP3 player (as the ones I LOVED that I left downstairs got eaten by mice (read: broken by an unknown family member). I would show you pictures, but really I'm too lazy to find them all, so here's the keyboard, that'll do: (Not a picture of my keyboard as it's not dark enough to show the illumination yet, so thank you google for providing the sales picture) The next order of business is my profile. Thanks to Angelsxo I now have NEWBIEPOWEEEEER (insert cool sound effects here) - see my profile picture over yonder -----> I'm feeling like an overhaul so I'm playing around with my banner and icon. As I type this I have Crush from Finding Nemo as my banner (Duuuuuudeeeeee!!) and my favourite television dude, Barney from How I Met Your Mother (a.k.a Neil Patrick Harris). For those who do not watch the show, 'Barney' is also responsible for the blog title inspiration, thanks dude!!! I'm still not sure about the banner even though it makes me grin, so if anyone has any superduper ideas, hit me!! I'm feeling creative!! Onwards!!! Let's go with a "What I've been watching" segment: Previously on NewbieBlog I was watching Two and a Half Men (Men, men, men, men...), Sex and the City and Coupling. I'm still watching the first two, but the latter has ended now so I've replaced it by catching up with a couple of shows that I come back to time and time again but never seem to get very far on: Gilmore Girls: I'm still only halfway through season 7. It's slow going because I watch maybe 2 episodes a week, but I'm getting there!! I think I'm prolonging it because I don't want it to end!! Anyway, season 7 seemed to start pretty slowly but we're getting somewhere now....I'm still missing the whole Gilmore banter though....S7 is just not the same without it!! The Pretender: I have actually seen most of this show before, but I love it, so a few months ago I started back at the beginning (first time round I saw them all out of order) and worked my way through season 1 really quickly. Season 2 did not go as fast and season 3 is hardly going at all, but I'm still loving it and when I get the time, I like to watch an episode! How I Met Your Mother: Working my way through season three at the minute. Watched 'No Tomorrow' last night and I hope to watch some more tonight. I'm trying to get caught up as much as possible so that I can attend the Fall TV.com chat without being thoroughly spoiled - I think it's the first time there has been a chat on a show that I'm really interested on, so this should be fun!! Reaper: I really really need to watch some more Reaper. I didn't get very far at all, but it's fun and I want to watch some more, so I'm putting it here to remind myself to watch!! So that's my TV stuff. How about TV.com? I've picked up a few new guides lately by being the highest contributor when the editors reitred and I'm really excited about them (well most of them anyway!!) Show-wise I picked up: The District Go' Aften Danmark (Thanks Tee :| Anyone want a Danish show?! ;) ) Person-Wise I picked up: Hill Harper Jonathan Taylor Thomas Matt Czuchry Richard Belzer Thanks to the editors who retired so that I could become editor! I'll take good care of them! Other TV.com news: - I lost level 55 (which I loved) and I'm now level 56 - hopefully the fact that I'm now not particularly keen on any of the levels will inspire me to make some more subs to get past all the ones I really don't like. I was lazy while I was on 55 because I didn't want to move off it. :D:D - Been doing some additions to some of my guides. Found a few older episodes for The Today Show so I threw those up, pleased with that. Also been adding missing episodes to The Rosie O'Donnell show and Look and Read (Thanks to Jeric-Ho for his help with this). Plan to continue working through these shows over the next few weeks and hopefully the episode guides will be complete/up to date before too much longer!! So, I think that's all from me, so I shall bid you farewell now! Sorry for a long and boring blog, hope you managed to make it this far though!!

Late night activities

According to a couple of different people, I haven't blogged for a while so it is time for a new one. So, here goes with another "I have nothing to blog about" blog. ;) This time I thought I'd tell you what I've been watching lately. Been doing a fair bit of late night TV watching instead of sleeping (bad me!) and because it's so late none of the shows I'd usually choose to watch are airing. This, combined with nothing better to do, has introduced me to a couple of new shows (and reintroduced me to a couple of old ones). First up, Dexter. I've watched an episode of Dexter previously and didn't really enjoy it. I found Michael C. Hall as Dexter kind of strange and there was a whole lot of fake looking blood in the episode I watched....blood is okay, fake looking blood...not so much. ;) Anyway, some time last week I was channel hopping and I stopped on FX as they usually have something I can live with watching. On this occasion it was a season 2 episode: Waiting to Exhale. I'm not going to go into what happened in the episode, but for some reason I found myself drawn in. Found Michael C. Hall charming as Dexter & found myself getting into it. I think maybe the reason I enjoyed this episode more is that between the first episode I watched & this one, I read the first book that the Dexter series is based on: Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. I think the book helped me to understand the psychology behind Dexter, which meant that I already had the background needed to understand why Dexter acts as he does in the episode. Anyway, enjoyed it....probably not quite enough to actively search it out to watch, but enough to stop if I'm passing by again late at night. Next up, Coupling. Okay, here goes. This one may be a fairly big surprise to anyone who knows me, because a) I don't generally like British shows and b) I don't tend to like comedy very much. So, here we have.....A British Comedy!! I've watched three or four episodes of coupling over the last few days. I'm not sure why, but I quite like it! It's a comedy based around 6 people - 3 men, 3 women (according to the summary, but I count 3 men, 4 women...probably 'cause I've jumped in halfway through again!). The show is about relationships and has some pretty funny scenes where all the guys get together to talk separately from the girls who are also together and talking....fun to see the difference. Richard Coyle makes me laugh as Jeff, and I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how I recognise Sarah Alexander, who plays Susan Walker. The storylines are simple enough that I can watch them at midnight and not get confused...that makes this show okay in my books. I'll definitely be watching more! The third show I've been spending my nights watching is Two and a Half Men. This one isn't new to me. I've seen a lot of episodes before, but somehow I rarely see the same episode twice (even though it's all re-runs). I've jumped in again at around about mid season 1 - I think I've watched from Round One to the Hot Crazy Chick through the next four or five episodes, within the last few days. The episodes seem to be jumping around a little though, judging by the episode guide. Anyway, I'm enjoying it...again it's simple storylines for the middle of the night, easygoing fun, and I will be watching more. :) When it gets to about 1pm and those shows have finished, I tend to channel hop through the Music Channels. I have 30 music channels. Guess how many songs I actually find that I like on those 30 channels? Yeah, not very many!! This is probably partially due to the fact that the channels can mainly be summarised like this: "The top 100.......blah blah....videos"...."Westlife's top 10!!"...."The Top 10 of the 70s, 80s, 90s, noughties....yada yada". The trouble with finding nothing good on the music channels is that...I keep channel hopping to try to convince myself that TV really can't be this bad. Really!! Before I know it, it's 2am, and I have Ice, Ice, Baby stuck in my head. ;) So, let me pose two questions to end the blog: Q1: Late night TV watching. Do you do it and if so, what do you watch? Q2: What is the most recent show you've checked out (new, old, whatever), and was it worth watching?

Who needs a car anyway?

Ainav - this one's for you!! I wouldn't be ranting if you weren't forcing me to blog. Everyone blame Ainav for my rant! ;):D So, what to blog about? Let's go with my car. (Note: the site won't let me use the pound symbol or the dollar symbol so I'm using USD for dollars and GBP for pounds) My car is currently at the garage being serviced. The service was due to cost 190 pounds (375USD). The receptionist at the garage just called with a "couple" of, what they call, advisories (basically things that they've spotted whilst doing the service that you need to be aware of). The conversation went something like this: Newbie: Hello? Receptionist: Hi this is the receptionist from the garage, just calling about your car. I've got a couple of advisories for you. Newbie: Okay... Receptionist: Well as the guys have been doing the service they've noticed that the tread on both your front tyres are down to 2mm and the minimum you can have is 1.6mm so your tyres need changing soon. I haven't got any in stock, but you'll need to keep an eye on them. Newbie: Okay no problem. Receptionist: Okay next up, your brake pads are worn down to 10% so they need changing soon too. Newbie: Okay. Receptionist: Your brake fluid needs topping up. Newbie: Ok (At this point I'm starting to wonder how many a "couple" of advisories actually is) Receptionist: Your nearside fog lamp is out and your rear wiper needs replacing. Newbie: Okay..... Receptionist: So, the cost of these is 139GBP for the brake pads, 14GBP for the fog lamp bulb, 8GBP for the rear wiper and 39GBP for the brake fluid. As I said, I haven't got any tyres to fit. So, do you want us to replace anything or just note them all down? (At this point I'm thinking "How soon can I sell this damn car?" at the same time as I'm mentally adding up the cost of all the parts) Newbie (Disheartened): Do the fluid, the fog lamp and the wiper. Note down the tyres and the pads. Receptionist (In chirpy voice): Okay, thanks! We'll do the replacements and will call you when you can pick up the car!! (At this point I was thinking "keep the damn thing, I'll never afford to change everything anyway") So....now I am waiting for her to call me back and let me know that the car is ready so that I can go and hand over around 250GBP (just under 500USD) of my hard earned cash for a service. I love my car, but I really hate it at the same time. I have been planning to trade it in early next year (a few months before it hits 3 years old) but I think I'm gonna start looking around now and trade it in sooner, because it's been cursed since I got it what with clunky steering that had to be sorted last time it was serviced, the stone chip that has never really gone away even though it was repaired, the car not starting every so often when I really need it to and all the bits I'm going to have to replace on the car which is only 2 years old. Ach!! Who needs a car anyway. I'm trading it in for a unicycle!! Whaddya think? I reckon I'd look good on one!! Until next time....bye from Newbie!

Newbie's firsts.

Well folks, your favourite Newbie has experienced a first today. Actually two firsts but the first first is far more exciting than the second first. Newbie's first first: I...HAD....AN....OREO! HOORAH! Now I know this may not seem like a big deal to those of you who can get an Oreo any time they want to, but to this Newbie who has spent years watching American shows in which people eat and enjoy Oreos, it's a big deal! You see, until Thursday night I did not know that we could get Oreos here. I was driving home from work a different way in order to pick up my sister, and I drove past a billboard advertising them! They have been on my mind ever since, so when I went shopping today I made sure to stray down the Biscuit (cookie) aisle that I usually so carefully avoid. So...here are some pictures of my first time (aren't you lucky): Mmmm Oreo. Ooops...I couldn't resist having a bit of the white stuff before taking the photo  And just for anyone who is interested, this is the packaging: Ok, so that was the exciting first. Now for the boring second first. Newbie's second first: I got a letter this morning saying that a part on my car is being recalled :( So, my baby has to go to the garage in a fortnight and get a part changed and a bit added. Poor baby. So..this is mine (and baby's) first recall. My second first. No exciting pictures with this one. I think I'll need another Oreo to get through this first. Bye for now!

Newbie does nights...

Okay boys and girls, just a quick heads up to let you know that after tonight any submissions made to my guides may take a little longer to be approved than normal as I'm going onto nights at work just for the next two nights, so I doubt I'll be in much of a state to deal with anything that falls into my queue until Monday night. Never fear, Newbie is still here...just don't be alarmed if there are slight delays!
