In Doom 3, having to choose between a flashlight or your weapon was not a good design choice. It was a cheap way of "provoking a specific emotional response." Seriously, in the future, in space, you don't think armor or weapons would have built-in lights? If they wanted us to feel tense moments, why not have a quick scripted sequence (doesn't even have to be a cut-scene, just a first-person, lose control of your guy for 1-2 seconds event) where an enemy disarms us (if the light is on the gun), or comes from behind and destroys our armor-mounted light? There are so many different things they could have done, but instead, they chose something as stupid and unbelievable as having us carry a flashlight or a gun... For crying out loud, our soldiers today have weapon-mounted flashlights.
So anyway, I feel like it was a dumb design decision to begin with, and I'm glad they have the sense to acknowledge it and do something about it. If that is somehow hurting the growth of the medium as an art form, well, I'll take it.
@danusty At most, I would pay $5, but they would never do that (if they decide to charge, they are gonna do it big I'm sure), and then I would just be a sucker for saying that I wouldn't give them another cent. Really, it's 1 or 2. 3 just looks bad for all of us. :P
Such a great article. It's always a pleasure to read your articles, Mr. McGee.
I used to be a big fan of Capcom fighting games, but after all the Super, Hyper, Champion, Turbo, Ultimate edition crap, I'm done. I really hope someone from there is listening and they go with option 1, or at worst 2. If they do 3, they'll never see another cent from me.
Yeah, like I said, I probably need to lighten up. I guess I prefer the more serious side of DOA than the Zack side of it. Or at least the more flashy-cool-move ninja/assassin style side of it.
I've been a DOA fan since the beginning, and most of the recent trailers have really excited me, but this one... Maybe I need to lighten up, but I thought the stage was dumb and the trailer boring. They also probably shouldn't have put all the ninjas together in the first trailers because the moves they showed in this one were also not very flashy (Zack needs to learn some more Tony Jaa moves or something). Anyway, still want the game, just let down by this trailer a bit.
Interesting article with some great points, but they won't be restoring characters for any reason (power outage, lag spike, etc.). Not that I think they should even bother wasting time restoring anyone, but the point is, I think it crosses the line where I no longer enjoy the game if I lose everything because something out of my control happens. And trust me, this has happened to me a lot in WoW (Sinestra, Heroic Rag, things that were hard where 10-25 other people counted on me and each other to not lose connection, go to the bathroom, or whatever for a set amount of time).
Thankfully, those days are long behind me now, and my life has definitely improved for the better because of it. As much as I have been waiting for D3, I will not be going into hardcore mode. The moment a game makes me upset because I have to answer a phone call or anything related to real life that takes me away from the game for even just a moment, it's crossed that line. If that makes me a casual gamer, then I guess that's what I am. But that definitely doesn't mean I won't play the crap out of this game with every class on Inferno with my friends.
Please read about the indoctrination theory. It explains very well the inconsistencies regarding the end sequence (it makes perfect sense if watch the video and read the link underneath). By itself, it's a very good read, well worth the time, but in the end, hopefully it will convince people that there is more in store for us. Just be patient. video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ythY_GkEBck
I bought and played the ME2 DLCs and read the first three books, so I didn't really think twice about the jump in story between the games, but this article really does bring up some great points. I would never have thought about this since it doesn't apply to me, but it is sad to see that if you don't try to keep up outside the games, you will be lost.
Hah, great article. I attended the Blizzcons when they were $100 and came with beta keys, and they were totally worth it (I live here in Cali too). I missed the last couple though, and honestly, I don't regret it one bit. I would also like to know what's up with the ticket hikes. From the sounds of it, it's certainly not going into the goodie bags. And yeah, they expanded Blizzcon to take up another hall, but that also means they get to sell more tickets.
