I played minecraft when it first came out on pc, and also first out on 7th gen console. I am happy how well this game was adopted and what it has become today.
I think, it would not be a bad idea to forgo the simple block design, or at least make a version running the newest graphics. It is almost as much work making gorgeous graphics that retain block look, then making something like many of the newer world building playground games mimic-ing minecraft. The block design helps gamers understand and judge distance and spatial dimensions when building or breaking things down. Like lego blocks, you can see what will be needed at a glance. But other games have gotten past this, and I am sure Minecraft can also.
Sure it may lose its charm, if blocks have that much charm, and a unreal IV-V game with life like graphics that still allows you to build and create.
