Skrillex - Why does he keep getting awards?

This has been buzzing in my head for some time. For the record, I don't have anything against the guy or his music, or even people who enjoy his music. His style isn't really my thing, but I can respect his creative energy. I also don't have any issue with him being popular, since can never fault any musician soley for being popular.

What I don't get is why he keeps getting awards, particularly at the Grammys. Him being popular is one thing, but being a critical darling on top of that? One award streak at the Grammys I'll give you (being a new artist and all), but another? I mean what do critics see in this guy that puts him above other EDM artists or even other dubstep artists?

Well, for a start, the Grammy's aren't generally considered a very reliable awards to go by, it does generally just go by what's big at the time, and it actually started as a reaction against rock music, so yeah. :P

Of course, on the other side, you could ask that about any artist, band etc. that have award-winning streaks.

Well Skrillex does get awards outside of the Grammys, too, but I see your point. :P

Oh of course. I personally don't want to put him down since I can enjoy his stuff, but yeah, at least for the Grammy's, they're primarily going for what's cool. As for other awards... well the nature of an award ceremony is simply a group in charge of giving awards to groups and artists giving their opinion on who, out of the list of nominees for each category, deserves to be recognised. Music is ultimately just one of those completely subjective things, what's good and bad is different for everyone.

Hence why, on a personal level, I don't see the point of awards or critics, an award doesn't make an artist or group artistically better on any objective level (financially is an entirely different question of course :P), and I don't need some journalist or what not telling me what I should and shouldn't like. :P
