Thinking about kids, should parents make them play less action video games if possible? Was reading online it does to some extent.

Personally i feel relaxed from stress while playing video games but i'm a 40 + guy , rather your next door kind of simple and timid family man. I stay miles away from violence , but i feel anger inside most of time with my life choices, certain people's ungrateful actions. I dunno if its because of playing video games. Don't want this anger inside in my kids.

Please suggest.

Thanking everyone in advance.

Many many studies say no, it doesn't. My opinion is that they don't.

Was actually talking to my dad about this the other day. He used to play cowboys and indians when he was a kid (he is 80, so this would have been like early 1950's). They'd shoot blunt arrows at each other and I guess one day one of the sticks was a little pointier than the others and someone shot my dad through the hand.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that play is play until it isn't. Always keep things in context and always be aware of when things are going too far. At least with video games there's no risk of shooting anyone in the hand.

Hell my friend and I used to throw rocks at eachother. In Braveheart there was a scene where they toss rocks at eachother and we were like "Oh man that's look like fun let's do that" so we did. That's a lot more harmful than any video game. But is it Braveheart's fault? No, it's our fault for not knowing any better and our parents fault for not being like "Hey, don't throw rocks at eachother" but then again who can blame them for not saying that, it's pretty obvious.

I don't think so.

As an anecdote, I started playing violent video games at the age of 7. I never really did anything seriously violent because of video games and I knew the difference between right and wrong. I knew what I was doing in video games was fictional. I used to play with guns, play cop and robbers or drug bust, and never once in my life did I want to become those things. That also came from parenting and my parents educating me on what is the right thing to do.

Disposition + environment = behaviour.

So for the tiny few that do, well, they were pretty messed up dispositionally.

I doubt it. Unless you're not right in the head in which case anything could give you a nudge towards violence.

No video games don't cause people to be violent but do you know what does? road rage, alcohol, bullies, growing up in a abusive household ect... video games are a easy scapegoat because it excuses shitty parenting the media loves to use it.

Nope and back during the golden age of Mortal Kombat arcade in the 90s, it never made kids go into a violent rage nor does games like Grand Theft Auto trigger anyone go in a bloody rage for that matter. Same could be said for action movies.

Not really. To make one violent in real life, it depends on how they were brought up, the types of friends, surroundings and having bad habits.

Bad parenting is more likely to make a kid violent than a violent video game.

Nah, I don't think so. There's numerous reasons as to why I think this way. Many have been already stated above, so there. :P

The best way to find out is by self experimentation. Play the most violent brutal games for a month or so, then go outside into real life and see what happens.

No I don’t believe so. I don’t feel any more angry or violent after playing video games or watching violent movies. I think it all comes down to the kid’s character and how they react in real life.

No, and one can say that I'm proof of that fact.

It's up to us adults to check up on our kids. A child can be the right age to play a certain videogame, but that doesn't mean he or she is emotionally ready. Same goes for movies.

Yeah. I've got a pile of boxes outside my window which I have to throw myself onto to let off steam after a particularly juicy session. Not knocking it or anything, mind - feels incredible. Like I've got sparks coming out of my fingers and toes and a big old foghorn for a head.

Actually, not really. I was lying there^ Just as a demonstration of how easy it is to do.

I've no reason to believe it does, no.
