Xbox Series S Rumors: Why A Cheaper Version Makes Sense For Microsoft

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Opinion: Here's why Microsoft will surely release a lower-price next-gen Xbox.

Recently, a white Xbox controller emerged in the wild containing references to an Xbox One S console. This provides further proof that Microsoft is indeed going to announce the console. It's rumored that Microsoft will formally unveil the system during an event in August, but we're still waiting to hear from the company regarding its plans for a second next-gen Xbox.

New consoles are always expensive, and this trend is expected to continue with the release of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 this year. But it might not be the only next-gen system Microsoft will offer. A popular and enduring rumor is that Microsoft will also release a lower-spec, less-expensive model aimed at the more mass-market audience known by the codename Lockhart. This is a great idea--and it's a much more interesting topic to consider now that Sony has revealed its own second, presumably less expensive digital-only PS5.

Now Playing: How To Get The Best TV For PS5 And Xbox Series X, Gamescom 2020 Breakdown | Generation Next

In fact, the name of Microsoft's next-gen console strategy is officially just called "Xbox," and the "Series X" label is the specific model name. You can think of this like the iPhone--there's the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE, and iPhone XR that all live under the iPhone umbrella.

For Xbox, I don't see the announcement of a cheaper next-gen Xbox as a matter of if but when. Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GameSpot that it might release additional next-gen Xbox SKUs, and I'm betting Lockhart is one of them. "Obviously, in the name 'Series X,' it gives us freedom to do other things with that name so that we can create descriptors when we need to," Spencer said in December 2019, all but confirming multiple next-gen Xbox consoles are coming.

It makes sense that we haven't heard anything official about the Lockhart machine yet because Microsoft understandably wants to focus on its most powerful model to lead the way. It's critical that Microsoft focuses on this new console instead of another option because hyping the more powerful machine gives Microsoft the ability to go toe-to-toe with the PlayStation 5. That's a key part of Microsoft's strategy this generation as it attempts to climb back after the struggles of the Xbox One era.

It's been reported for months that Lockhart is a real console, but sources have yet to confirm if Microsoft actually plans to release the system or if it is only an idea at this stage. As is typical, plans can change and often do, and the COVID-19 pandemic might have led to further tweaks to the plan.

What we do know is that Microsoft's vision for Xbox is all about giving players options. Currently, you can buy games outright, subscribe to Xbox Game Pass for a Netflix-style all-you-can-eat experience, stream games with xCloud, and play across Xbox and PC with cross-save and cross-progression. Microsoft has been forward-thinking and consumer-friendly in this regard. The next step could be to offer a less expensive next-gen Xbox with some capability removed but still standing as an attractive option.

No Caption Provided

Not everyone needs or wants the highest-spec machine, and the expected $500 price point of the Series X might be out of reach for a portion of the gaming crowd, especially coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is where the Lockhart system could fill the gap.

Microsoft has been on this path of offering variety and choice for more than a decade. In 2009, Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg spoke about how the one-size-fits-all solution was no longer viable. "There are different sets of consumers who want different levels of experience at different price points," Greenberg told Eurogamer at the time. "A big part of that is having a console on the market that's at a mass-market price-point. Consumers who are new to the experience, or who want a more casual experience, don't have to pay a premium for features they would probably never use."

It's interesting to look back at this interview today because this trend continued with the Xbox One era. Microsoft offered all types of options--the Xbox One, the Xbox One S, the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, and the Xbox One X. It stands to reason that this will continue to be the case for the next-generation of Xbox consoles that kicks off with the Series X this year.

With the lower price point, the Lockhart console won't offer the same features or capabilities as its super-sized sibling. Unconfirmed reports claim the Lockhart Xbox will have a solid-state drive and focus on gaming with resolutions up to 1440p instead of 4K as can be the case on Series X. The Verge reported that Lockhart will have a next-gen CPU, but it will feature slower clock speeds than the Series X. Also, Microsoft is reportedly planning to drop the disc drive on the Lockhart console, not unlike the experiment of the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition. None of these details have been confirmed, but the smart money is that it will have comparatively weaker specs than the Series X to facilitate the lower price point.

The Lockhart console might not have all the bells and whistles of the Series X, but that's totally fine because price is the most important factor for sales in the marketplace, especially during holiday shopping periods. Microsoft's most powerful consoles never sell the best, anyway. In the Xbox One era, Microsoft released the more powerful Xbox One X--the most powerful console still to this day--knowing full well that it would not be the top-seller in the family of Xbox consoles. Phil Spencer told Gizmodo that it was releasing the Xbox One X to give people the option to have the fastest and most powerful console if they wanted it while the lower-price Xbox One S would be the market-leader in terms of sales. "We'll sell more Ses than we do Xes, no doubt about that," Spencer said. "But the person that plays a lot is looking for the best experience, and we wanted to deliver that."

No Caption Provided

I foresee a future where the idea of a "family of devices" in the game console market is nothing novel--we're already there, in fact. Microsoft has been doing this for more than a decade, and Sony and Nintendo, too, offer different versions of their hardware to reach the widest audience. Outside of gaming, Apple has already popularized the idea of a "family of devices" with its various iPhone models that give users options depending on affordability, speed, and power.

With the rise of digital services and streaming, some have wondered how much longer platform-holders will keep making consoles. It's my belief that dedicated gaming hardware is here to stay, at least for the next decade. The latest data shows that 31 percent of US households don't have broadband in 2020, so Microsoft is smart to embrace a strategy that gives consumers options. That's already what's happening--Microsoft currently sells Xbox consoles at all different price points and feature sets. Not only that, but with Xbox Game Pass and xCloud, Microsoft doesn't even necessarily need you to buy a console any longer.

Potentially complicating the hardware situation in 2020 are issues with the supply chain related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Just recently, Phil Spencer said he anticipates that Microsoft will be "able to get enough units" for launch, but it's unclear here whether he's solely talking about the Xbox Series X or the total supply for however many systems it might have coming. Whether or not the lower-price next-gen Xbox launches this holiday with the Series X or later on, the console is coming.

In GameSpot's 2019 profile of Phil Spencer, he confirmed that Microsoft wants to give players all kinds of options for their console buying, and a cheaper system is surely part of that plan.

"The number of people that are actually buying a console every generation isn't growing dramatically, if at all," Spencer said. "At one point you have to recognize that, okay, you can't just lead with one device. You can't just say, here's an Xbox. I'm going to go sell this device to every single person and that's what they're going to play on. That just doesn't work."

I don't particularly like the idea of the cheaper Lockhart system doing away with the disc drive. Given the aforementioned broadband concerns, a console without a disc drive might not be a viable or desirable option for some people. Not only that, but cutting the disc drive from the only lower-price next-gen Xbox option doesn't come across as particularly consumer-friendly for a company that does so much in the area of options and choice.

On Xbox One, it's a different situation. While the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition technically has an MSRP of $50 less than the Xbox One S that does have a disc drive, the S model is regularly discounted to bring it closer to the All-Digital Edition price. This gives people the option to choose, and it would be sad to see that go away with the next-gen Xbox. Nothing is confirmed at this stage, so we'll have to wait to hear more from Microsoft about its official plans for a lower-price next-gen Xbox.

Potentially throwing a wrench into the works for Microsoft's strategy is what Sony announced recently--a PlayStation 5 with no disc drive. The system boasts the same power as the standard PS5, it just doesn't have a disc drive. If the rumors are true that Microsoft's cheaper Xbox Series X model without a disc drive has worse specs than the regular Xbox Series X, this could pose a competitive issue for Xbox.

New console launches are exciting--it's fun to get your hands on a shiny new piece of hardware and boot it up for the first time. But Microsoft is not releasing any Xbox Series X exclusives for the first couple years of the console, so the existing hardware you own today will play Halo Infinite, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and the rumored Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War without requiring you to upgrade. But if you do want to buy into next-gen gaming, Microsoft seems poised to once more give players options--and that's great.

Microsoft is laughing at everyone that thinks SXD is going to be graphically inferior to SX. Much like Sony's flagship offering, they're only charging an additional $50.00-$100.00. Sony's camp will be $50.00 in addition from what I've been told but MS may take a bigger hit to compete. The pressure is on and they're hoping their showing next month will please fans but they know it won't be as exciting as what we saw last week. A few surprises will be there...one that's already shock me. Aside from that, quite a few Indies and a few heavy hitters (with actual gameplay).

@louixiii: As long as it's priced right would be nice! The rumored Fable relaunch or whatever would be amazing. Let's see if they can bring back some IP's from Rare like Conker back from the vault.

@p8z77: That's happening. The re-imagining of Fable will be MAGNIFICENT. I haven't seen that one yet but if what I was told is true, a lot of people are going to be impressed. Now, I did see some Conker footage that they were going to use for a current title and it looked really bad. I wasn't impressed at all. Not sure if they've done something different or if it's still a thing. I don't know anyone that works with that studio anymore but who knows. But what I do know is that Fable is definitely happening...

@louixiii: Umm, the fact that a new Fable is in the works by a studio other than Lionhead (Playground Games) was leaked ages ago and all but confirmed by Spencer. This is old news. And the only new title Rare has in development is EVERWILD so I highly doubt they are working on that, Sea of Thieves and making something with Conker as well. You say you used to know someone who worked for Rare that gave you inside info. Since they no longer work for Rare, you should have no problem telling us who they were. So who was it?

@bdrtfm: Wow...stalker much? This is like the 4th comment you've left me. I'm flattered and all but you're not my type.

Furthermore, where in that conversation did I say that it was "insider" info? He said that it was rumored and I reassured him that it was not. If I wanted to lie to the guy I'd be like "I seen the new FABLE! I've seen it with my own eyes!" but I'm not a liar. I only know what friends have shared with me and I heard that it's shaping up to be something special.

Am I a bad guy for that?

I know I'm the only one that has friends in the industry but why are you attacking me? We were having an A-B conversation...please C your way out!

Good Day Sir!

@bdrtfm: Man...I pity you. You hate me so much that youll do anything even though I've provided actual proof when I really didn't have to. The sad part is, now you're making yourself look bad with every reply and you don't even see it. Take care little guy. I know one day you'll actually grow up and become a big boy. Just know that I'm rooting for you👍

@louixiii: Dude, you are trying way too hard. Exactly who at Sony told you the PS5 will only be $50 more than the PS5 Digital? And what game shocked you at the next Microsoft event that doesn't start until next month? This should be good.

@bdrtfm: Correction...you're trying way too hard to get me to give up more information than I'm willing to give. For starters, I would NEVER expose someone by giving out their name. That's like asking for them to resign. Many of my sources come from friends I've met over years of travelling to gaming events.

Secondly...we don't even like each other so why the hell are you even commenting on anything I post?

Lastly, I don't have to prove s*** to you or anybody else for that matter. I've been dropping jewels on here (and other sites) for years to a select few people that'll vouch for my credibility.

Good day sir!

@louixiii: I've been on here for years. I have never read a comment from you dropping privileged information ever that only you knew and turned out to be true. Saying the PS5 digital will be $50 less than the standard PS5 is just a guess based on a hunch. Nothing more. You have a 50/50 chance of being right and you're playing the odds. Sony always keeps their hand tightly guarded. There are probably half a dozen people in the world who know the price Sony is shooting for. And saying there is something in the upcoming Microsoft event that surprised you is just vague. What is the point in telling us that? Literally anything in the event could be shocking to someone.

@bdrtfm: It's funny that you've NEVER read a comment that I've posted giving insider information. I'm the one that told EVERYONE that Sony had plans to release the PS5 in 2020 and this was back in 2016! I also leaked the Dragon Dogma 2 was still in development along with a bunch of other games like GOW (PS4) and SF5's exclusivity deal prior to news breaking on this site. Hell...I can even find some links of recent jewels I've drop...be right back.

Update: I'm back!

Here's some RECENT leaks that proved to be true...

1.) IGN: I leaked the exact date of the Sony PS5 reveal almost 2 weeks before it was officially announced!

https://www.ign.com/videos/ps5-vs-xbox-series-xs-games-next-gen-console-watch?commentId=e5407a75-3dd5-4267-83ba-305d5620ff38

Within that same link you'll see me conversing with a member that can vouch for my credibility since I've been giving him inside info for a while now. That link also reveals a few other leaks I've shared with the public.

2.) GameSpot: I leaked that INSOMNIAC was going to be the stars of the PS5 event 2 WEEKS PRIOR to the event. The link and the exact quote is below. Check the days the comment was left and compare it to when the PS5 event was held.

I don't work for GamesSpot so there's no way possible that I can change the dates and times on here. Also, if the link doesn't go directly to the comment, go to page 12-13. You should find it there.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/after-delay-for-more-important-voices-sony-prepari/1100-6477780/

"@afromakka: HZD 2 is NOT almost done...sorry. Also, don't bet on a Days Gone 2 sequel anytime soon if at all. Now...let's talk Insomniac [shhhh]

#GETEXCITED!!!"

I actually got to see some of the footage of both S:MM and R&C:RA a few months ago thanks to a good friend. Because I value and respect the people within the industry that I'm friends with, I can only reveal what they give me permission to and even then, sometimes I'm not allowed to go into deep details but I do what I can, when I can but only for guys that I know aren't just trying to use me. Anyway...

Good Day Sir!

@louixiii: The lady doth protest too much, me thinks.

You said you got it right when you said Sony would release a console in 2020. Like you were the only person who thought Sony would release a console in 2020. Literally every PlayStation fan predicted the same. And how is you thinking Insomniac was going to be some kind of star a leak? That's an opinion. And you can also edit your comments on Gamespot at any time. Even 5 years later.

"I know something about something but I'm not allowed to tell you." Gee thanks. That was very informative.... Like telling us something that we'll see in the next Xbox event that totally shocked you is going to get your "Source" fired. There are probably dozens if not hundreds of people working on that video. It would be impossible for Microsoft to figure out who your source is by telling us what you are referring to, assuming they even read comment sections, which I highly doubt. So why not just tell us?

@bdrtfm: Once again, I've supported my claims with actual proof. I'm not clairvoyant...there's no way possible I could've guessed the exact date of the show nor would I have known which dev was displaying more than one game. Also, NOBODY on the net from here to Kotaku leaked that information but me. You sound jelly? Is that it? Forgive me for being kind to people I run across. There's a reason why I have friends and you don't. You don't even respect your followers enough to follow them back...

No wonder you're lonely. You never learned how to be a friend. It's sad. Would you like me to upvote one of your comments for you? Need a hug?

@afromakka: Thanks for the back up bro. It's sad that to see how far some people are willing to go to try and discredit someone. I can see if I was making this s*** up but you see it for yourself. Some people just hate not being in the know. Thanks again bro. I appreciate you!

Oh, I sent you a dm about the "big two" you were asking about. Can't help much with number 3 as I don't have a plug in that camp but if I find out anything you'll be the first to know.

@louixiii: Again, all of your so called "Leaks" are just guessing. Literally everyone knew years ago Sony would be releasing a console in 2020. That's an educated guess. That's all you are doing, guessing things that everyone already knows is highly likely. And I bet there are a thousand times you've been wrong for every one time you guessed right. But we won't hear about those.

But let's pretend for a second you do have inside knowledge; having inside knowledge of something you can't share is pointless. So if you can't divulge something, don't mention it. Just maybe stop telling everybody you know stuff but can't tell us. Info you cannot share is useless. I mean, we get it, you have "friends" who tell you stuff but insist you tell nobody else. Stop using the forums to stroke your ego. If you can't tell us, we don't need you to tell us you can't tell us.

@bdrtfm: Dudd...read your comments and read mine. Who's the angry one here? That's you my friend. The walls upon walls of text proves it. I've actually provided tangible evidence to support my claims and people have taken the time out of their busy schedules to vouch for me, yet you insist on being combative when no one was talking to you to begin with...

Are you that starved for attention? Those comments posted from the links weren't edited and I have several people that will attest to that. Now...the only thing you're doing is trying to satisfy and pacify your poor little ego. It's pathetic man...it really is.

Please, don't force my hand Penguin Guy. You're starting to annoy me and I'd really hate to send you to time out.

@louixiii: You've said three times you've provided proof. You've provided no such thing. Links to two comments where you guessed something and got it right does not prove you have inside knowledge. It proves you got lucky 2 times in your life. All you've provided in your comments here and in other articles is personal attacks on me and others, including name calling. I mean, you actually bragged about how many followers you have in one article. I didn't even know I had 11 followers until you told me. I guess I just have more important things to care about in my life than the number of followers I have on a website.

Look, it's very simple: if you have something secret to share with 1 or 2 people then PM them. Don't tell us you know something but can't tell us what it is. If you know something that only you truly know, awesome, tell us what it is. If you know something but have been sworn to secrecy, then keep it to yourself. As far as the "time out" goes, I have said nothing that warrants a time out and you don't have the authority anyway. Not believing someone is not against the TOS. And if your plan is to PM a mod to have me banned for not believing something you said, well that would be quite petty.

@louixiii: You are also commenting back to me. You realize that right? Maybe stop insulting me and everyone else, calling us all sorts of childish names and telling us how we don't have any friends because we don't believe you have inside knowledge of anything. You seem to say that a lot, that anyone who doesn't believe you has no friends. Must be something Freudian going on there.... Also, just because you talk to people on the internet, doesn't make them your friend. So enjoy your 59 followers or whatever amount you were bragging you had. And I have no interest in you sharing whatever you pretend to know so give it a rest with the "I'm not telling you anything" garbage. 24 freaking hours of insults and anger because I said I don't believe you have inside knowledge. @bdrtfm: Wait a minute...did you just say "maybe stop insulting me"...are you f***ing serious right now. My first week back to GS and you accused me of not having an Xbox One when you don't know jack s*** about me and that was OUT OF THE BLUE...

If I tell someone something, that's exactly what it is. I even offered to take pics and post them on my page along with my artwork but nooooooo.....you couldn't handle that. Then you started calling me your son...like...who the f*** are you? I got a dad already.

After that, you insult me by calling me a liar yet again because I shared insider info with a select few people and not you directly...

So why are you trying to play the victim role when you insulted me first? Isn't that the POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK? Is this how you get your kicks?

If you want respect, work on giving it...

Furthermore, didn't your parents teach you not to assume? Break the word down and we get the story of your life! The good part is, it's never too late to change but you really need to take a look in the mirror and check yourself because this isn't how you move forward...

@louixiii: Saying I have a hard time believing you own an Xbox is not insulting you because you spend a lot of time bashing Xbox. Saying that your insider information sounds a lot like educated guessing is not insulting you.

"Take up for your racist, cousin ****ing brethren all you want but don't come at me with that bullshit. If you don't like what I say you got 2 options...walk away or stay but please...don't act like a little b**** if you do!" That is insulting, louixiii.

"Furthermore, didn't your parents teach you not to assume? Break the word down and we get the story of your life!" is insulting.

"Lets pretend shall we...much like the way that you pretend to have a life outside of GS." is insulting.

"You're a sad, pathetic little man. Good luck on finding someone to 😚your(_l_)" is insulting.

"Because I made you look stupid in front of some people you'll never meet. Do you know how pathetic that is? Dude...get a life😆" is insulting.

"There's a reason why I have friends and you don't." is insulting.

"No wonder you're lonely. You never learned how to be a friend. It's sad. Would you like me to upvote one of your comments for you? Need a hug?" is insulting.

"I know one day you'll actually grow up and become a big boy." is insulting.

"You need a hug and since nobody is willing you give it, you're going to harass someone until they do... Dude, carry your mommy issues someone else" is insulting.

"Read the comment below jackass." is insulting.

"If the rest of you didn't act like a bunch of little disrespectful twats...maybe I'd share more but for some reason, this is the only site that has something negative to say when I do." is insulting.

"Nah, you had nothing better to do so here we are jackass." is insulting.

"I think people that screw their cousins are sick...just like white guys that pretend to be black just to post comments geared towards hatred. Does that also offend you?" is just messed up.

"Now...don't you have a cousin to **** or something like that?" is insulting.

That is just over the last week. And all because people had a difference of opinion than you and that I said the info you gave about how you knew Sony would release a console in 2020 wasn't "Secret knowledge" and was nothing but guessing that others came up with long before you did. Literally everyone knew Sony would release a console in 2020. All those attacks because I and others dared to question your "insider knowledge" that most would refer to as pretty common and obvious. So yeah, give it a rest with the insults. Its not just me, you insult EVERYONE who questions your insider knowledge.

@bdrtfm: Honestly, we've insulted each other but I never started it with you. You started it with me...and because of that, I'll end it in appropriate fashion.

I sincerely apologize for all of the insults I've sent your way in retaliation. I hope you are willing to accept my apology so that we can move forward because this has gone on for far too long.

In regards to my ownership of Xbox consoles or paraphernalia, it is true. I've owned every Xbox to date. My Xbox IDis BornHero III. My PS4 ID is born_hero_III and my Nintendo ID is BornHeroIII. Please feel free to verify all 3.

And I don't bash the Xbox, I bash the way the Xbox gaming division is being ran. There's a difference between bashing a piece of machinery/product and bashing a person or team responsible for promoting it. I have a right to state how I feel and being that I've been gaming before the Xbox was a thought, I have the right to weigh in on how the product is being handled much like everyone else here. Why you've targeted me directly is unknown but either way, you now have proof that I am a Xbox owner.

Also (much like my ownership claim), I actually do have quite a few friends that work for various gaming studios across the world. Some I grew up with and others I've met at conventions and yes...they actually do share info with me just as long as I don't share everything I know. I don't expect you or anyone else to believe me but I have absolutely no reason to lie to you.

If you choose to apologize for the part(s) you've played in this matter (falsely accusing me of not owning a particular product, contacting me to initiate arguments even though particular comments were not aimed at you and last but not least, calling me your "son"), it will be much appreciated.

If not, it will only confirm what I've thought the entire time while proving who's the bigger man here.

Hopefully, after this we can be either start fresh and be pals or not communicate any longer. I'll leave that to you but I will kindly ask that you do not falsely accuse me of things or contact me leaving negative comments. I am asking both politely and respectfully.

Furthermore, if you're a dad (like myself), Happy Father's Day to you.

Good Day Sir!

@louixiii: I don't call you "Son" in a derogatory fashion. That is just a word I use for most people because I'm pushing retirement age. And most gamers are my kids age or younger on here. I call most people son who I don't know. That's just me. And I didn't say I literally don't believe you have an Xbox. I just find it weird when people spend money on a device and then bash it. It makes me wonder if they even own one because I can't imagine spending $400 on something that I don't really like that much. As far as insider knowledge goes, all I'm going by is the stuff I've seen you write about recently. A lot of it sounds to me like simple guessing where you have a pretty decent chance of being right. Regardless, if you do have insider knowledge, that's cool. But I am in no way jealous about that because I prefer to learn about things as they happen. I don't like to hear about things happening at an event that I am looking forward to watching. I mean if its something that could save me money, awesome. But I don't like to hear about things in advance because I also know a few people who learn things others don't and they are sometimes wrong and I end up disappointed or its a game that normally wouldn't be announced for another few years and now I know about it and have to wait for something I normally wouldn't be waiting for - stuff like that. Anyway, I am capable of accepting my share of responsibility and apologizing for it because I know I often grab on like a dog with a bone and have a hard time letting go. Sometimes I come across as harsh and offensive and for that I am sorry. But anyway, my kids got me TLOU2 for a gift today and its done installing so, Happy Father's Day and be well. I've got some Infected to kill.

@bdrtfm: I have to admit...I'm impressed. Any man that can admit when he's wrong is a man that can be reasoned with. For that, you've earned my respect. Thank you!

As for the way I rag on Microsoft, it's not about the box or even the brand that bothers me, it's the freaking division that promotes it. Even Ryan McCaffrey, a hardcore Xbox supports has the same gripes that I have with the way the division is being ran. For example, why isn't Microsoft out there working on more exclusive content from third parties? For example, how on Earth did MS allow Sony to get exclusive rights to SF5? In case you didn't know, I'm also a member of the FGC (for over 10 years which is how I heard about the Sony deal way before Capcom made an official announcement).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXV73Dm96-g

But that's not the first, second or third time MS dropped the ball this gen. Nioh is a Tecmo game. How did they not get in on that? Wth!

I just feel like Sony see's the big picture when it's comes to not only marketing but also provider their consumers with a wide range of different titles. Microsoft's most talented studios(343 and Coalition) only kick out one game each. 343 is Halo only and Coalition is Gears only.

Meanwhile, Sony's 1st party studios kick out more than just one franchise. Naughty (Crash, Uncharted and TLOU), Sucker Punch (Sly, Infamous and now GoT), Insomniac (Ratchet, Spiderman), Guerrilla (Killzone, Horizon), Japan Studios (Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian) and then you Santa Monica which only handles GOW.

I just feel like Phil is focusing too much on the console itself instead of using their resources to secure third party exclusives. I mean...Microsoft as a whole has more money than Sony. Their cloud tech is amazing! Their Gamepass is great! How can a company that gets so many things right get the most important things wrong? Like...who green lit Crackdown 3? I honestly don't think it was Platinum Studios fault that their deal with Scalebound fell through. In one interview I read, MS reps were always standing over their shoulders. We're talking about the Kamiya...the guy that brought us Viewtiful Joe 1&2, DMC 1&2, Bayonetta 1-3... This guy knows his stuff. They should've just let them work at their own pace and deliver a masterpiece. In the end, that's what it would've been. Greatness must not be rushed. Pressuring studios is not the way to get the job done.

That's another reason why I'm always praising Sony. They have projections but they give their studio plenty of room for error. But these are the reasons why I leave comments that can come across as a bit harsh towards Microsoft. I just want them to wake up. If you're going to compete, bring me new games. BC is a great selling point but I've already beaten every game I like from the 360 and original Xbox era so playing them again doesn't interest me one bit. I want to be hype for in more than just a new Halo game.

As for me dishing out dirt, I haven't been considerate of people that don't want to hear spoilers and that's something I have to change. Sometimes I get so excited when I get new info that I can't help myself sometimes. From here on out, I'll start using spoiler tags.

Do me a favor and give me your review of TLoU2 (1-10) when you're done. I only play one game at a time and I'm still taking my time with Doom Eternal. My favorite shooter this gen was DOOM 2016 so I'm taking my sweet time with this one :D

i thought a lot of ppl were pissed about the x360 arcade being pretty much worthless unless the only games you wanted to play were frogger and pacman.

console should always be above the bare minimum product. if a company cant create a machine thats the suggestion and perhaps a 2nd version with extra whistles then theyve just failed. if i need a chart like assassins creed series games have nowadays then ill just get a pc and do all the work required to have a truly tailored device

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: The Xbox 360 arcade played every Xbox game disc made except for multi-disc games that required an install disc. I can only remember 3 games like that. I had one at the hunt camp and it played games just fine. Why does everyone think Xbox 360 games had to be installed on a hard drive? They didn't. They played off the disc. Onboard storage and expansion slots were enough for game saves and patches. The only games it couldn't play were Original Xbox games.

@bdrtfm: i had 20gb (or 13gb) version and even it felt crippled. installs werent thing in long time but the way the console promoted digital downloads both games and content it just filled instantly. some gears map packs, halo map packs, forza track packs and gta expansions and then a couple of xbla games after they started to be 500 mb+ and boom it was full. the original xbox i was never able to fill because live wasnt such a big deal back then.

the 20gbs was the premium one and even it wasnt future proof at all. all i remember is some articles saying the arcade is pointless and its better just pay the difference to get the working version

so i guesd i try sah that if ms needs to have even 2 versions make the other one much more future proof even if its more expensive. starting from ecological viewpoint i dont want to buy many versions of the same console

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: I remember 360 Core, always seemed useless, but they had a version of it almost the entirety of the 360 life so it must have sold. I bought the Elite when it came out, still runs to this day, but 120 gigs fills up quick with the rise of digital games.

I have to have a 10 terabyte drive now for my Xbox One X. It's less than halfway filled up, but still, that 1 terabyte hard drive is nothing today.

I don't think Lockhart is happening, at least not like they speculate it is. I mean if you read what is in the article, you'd be better off owning an Xbox One X. I think the digital only is more likely to be the other Xbox. Sony just got the jump in promoting it.

If you don't want spend money on a new console, Microsoft already has a product for you called the Xbox 360... oooh, I mean the Xbox One. So, just stick with that. Deja-Vu. It worked out really well for them last time 'round. Gamers want next generation performance & GAMES. Period.

@Revl8n: I did stick with the 360 for a year and a half until the 1 terabyte version of the One hit. Learned that from the 360 Elite(which I have, still runs).

Anyways, this is nowhere close to that situation. Xbox One games didn't run on the 360 and you didn't get the next gen version of said game when you upgraded. So it's a little different now.

@Revl8n: That was just sad. What they did ''last time 'round" is not what they are doing this time around. And I recall PlayStation owners laughing and losing their minds about Microsoft having an all digital console and calling it the welfare console. But now Sony has a digital only console so suddenly its the cat's ass.

I am not a fan of two models being released.

I much prefer to have one machine that caters to all needs, in one package. It would also save Microsoft a lot of money on manufacturing and marketing costs too.

Physical disks are going extinct and anyone who games on PC (like myself) knew this was the reality for years. Games are increasingly digital and tied to user accounts, like Steam, Origins, etc.

This is also the reason why an increase in console hard disk size is inevitable. Digital games need lots of space to work, and if companies want us to buy a ton of games, we will need a ton of space to store them.

@walkerigp: I see no harm in two different versions, you choose which you want. If you want the digital only, go for it. Otherwise, you can pay a little more and get one with the disc drive. That's the one I'll get anyways myself.

@thelostscribe: The good thing about options is that you have a choice to choose. However, if Sony wants people to embrace the digital tomorrow, they will have to go full digital at some point. Right now they are basically dipping their toe in the water, testing it out before they go in to swim :D

@walkerigp: I'm fairly positive we have at least one more full generation of consoles with disc drives. If Xbox plans to support backwards compatibility indefinitely as it says(things of course can change in the next 8 years), then Xbox will continue to have a disc drive as long as they release a traditional console.

Series X is a must Day 1 Purchase.

PS5 is a purchase later on when the Slim version comes out on a year or two and by then Horizon 2 would be out as well.

What if we find out that Lockhart is actually the more powerful system, and this entire time Microsoft was getting ready to blow Sony and all their fan boys right out of the water.

Do you want to talk about powerful marketing that’s how you do it. Have the series X come in at the same price as the PS five, and then have the Lockhart the $600 console for all the diehards That demand 4K 60 frames a second or higher with everything. That would be pretty amazing.

@supersnakeplissken: The Series "X" is already much more powerful than the PS5. The PS5 has a smaller die size which is why it has a variable clock speed to try to raise it's performance to reach the Xbox Series "X" speeds.

All Microsoft needs to do is simply match the PS5 in price and offer another console option at lower price for non-4K gamers.

@p8z77: Your claim about power has already been debunked by knowledgeable technical experts using actual data. My favorite is a video by The Cherno. As both CPU and GPU for both consoles are made buy AMD, it seems unlikely they have different die sizes. If you have a link to such data, please post. In the end it comes down to the games and whether or not one has a library of PS4/Xbone titles one wants to play on new platform.

@Revl8n: The experts won't know for till they get their mits on the consoles. The base PS4 specs are very similar to the base Xbox One, but there is a noticeable visual difference between them, notably the ability for the PS4 to hit native 1080p on third party games as Xbox One struggles to hit 900p.

The differences seem much greater between the PS5 and Series X specs. We'll all find out soon.

@Revl8n: Oh please name these technical experts. Here are the facts, not your console YouTubers hoping for the best. I'm not a console gamer, just for the record haven't purchased a console in years since the original N64.

LOL AMD doesn't make the wafers! That alone tells me you don't have any knowledge of how chips are made.

Fact is the PS4 Pro and the Xbox OneX had different sizes and different than their 1st launch versions.

The PS5 seems to be pointing at a smaller die size. Why hasn't Sony revealed it? Microsoft has released it for their Series "X." Also the fact that Sony's official specs state that it has a variable clocks with a max clock, means the chipset is running above it's initial target clocks for performance. The max clocks are an attempt to match the Series "X" in specs on paper, but it can't hold those max clocks for long. Obviously heat in such terrible console designs is 1 factor, but the smaller chipset is the main reason. Sony's budget gave a little extra attention to the SSD which is primarily only going to benefit game designs for PS5 only titles. Graphics scale, games that rely on the PS5 SSD cannot release on any other platform---this limiting the game sales on other platforms (which lost of potential revenue).

Sorry, but this is the reason I don't like console gamers talking about technology which they don't understand. Most of their beliefs rely on marketing and console Youtubers.

I don't see the value in a disc driveless system for either of these companies. The size these games are going to, the updates, the DLC--either you're going to have to constantly cycle games through your harddrive or pay for a storage expansion which will negate the savings of this version.

@Sepewrath: You already install most of the game files on the HDD with current consoles......The physical disc is primarily to "authenticate" that the disc is an official copy of the game.

There literally is no benefit for physical disc anymore. With the constant updates, patches, DLC and always online games makes physical games irrelevant. In some cases, the game changes so much that the original files on the disc are no longer used and have been replaced with software updates over the internet.

Physical discs are outdated and contribute to more trash on the environment. All digital games will lower prices and gamers will enjoy major seasonal sales like on Steam that PC gamers have enjoyed.

@p8z77: People have been singing that song and dance about cheaper games since the advent of digital. Yet here we are still with digital and physical being the exact same price. One, the price of games is not dependent upon the the manufacturing cost of disc--the price of the game is dependent upon the cost of production of the game. Whether its digital or physical, the game will cost what it cost. As far as sales go, there are sales on physical disc all the time. Steams sales have nothing to do with the games being digital, because games that are on consoles and steam are usually on sale at the same time as they are on steam.

@Sepewrath: Games on PC are generally cheaper than consoles versions, it could be that there are more storefronts on PC. Consoles have little choice of digital storefronts to purchase their games.

Games generally go on sale on PC much more often times a year and take a price cut earlier than their console counter-parts.

Publishers also can gain more revenue on digital purchases vs physical discs. Physical discs still take a cut to manufacture them regardless of how small a cost it is. Middle-men take a cut in revenue Bestbuy, Gamestop, Amazon, (any retailer etc.) Then the physical disc can be sold to Gamestop, which flips them to resale the same disc to another gamer. Gamestop takes revenue from developers/publishers by reselling used discs. Gamers don't gain much money from Gamestop. Thus why would a physical disc go on sale when a gamer will possibly give Gamestop the opportunity to profit? To make-up for the loss of physical disc give Gamestop profits, I wouldn't lower the prices of digital games (to make up for lost sales).

Which leads to the resurgence of games being sold on PC, because of how successful the sales are. Console exclusives coming to PC, more storefronts (GOG, Steam, EA Origin, Epic Games, Humble Bundle, Green Mans Gaming, etc.)

I think this PS5 digital edition and Microsoft possible announced console will finally bring consoles to the digital future. The dinosaur physical discs will finally start to fade.

@p8z77: Xbox has digital game sales almost every other week. The other reason PC games are so often run on sale is rampant pirating. The genius of Steam is that they realized even PC pirates will buy games for cheap.

Also note that digital game sales have coincided with tons of extra revenue coming from microtransactions and DLC. I prefer the choice, because besides games, the digital alternative for things like movies and music have almost always been at much lower quality than the physical disc.

So I'll hold onto the dinosaur for as long as possible.

Except for the original Xbox, Microsoft has always offered a slimmer, cheaper version of the console. I have several phat 360's and a slim one. I have a phat Xbox One and two slims and an X1X that my son confiscated. LOL. It stands to reason this will be the norm going forward. There will be a digital model and a "lite" model both of which will be cheaper than the elite model. Although what the difference will be between the "lite" and digital models is the question. Or maybe they will just consider the digital model the "lite" model. Something for everyone's budget I guess is what they are going for.
