Xbox's Phil Spencer: Biggest request I get is to bring back Shenmue

But don't get too excited; "It's a Sega game. We can't build it," Spencer says.

The most repeated request new Head of Xbox Phil Spencer hears from Xbox owners is for a new entry in Sega and Yu Suzuki's Shenmue series.

"The big Shenmue contingency," Spencer said with a laugh in an interview with Polygon. This group of gamers has "definitely" gathered his attention, the report states.

Don't expect a new Shenmue from Microsoft anytime soon, however. Spencer said on Twitter in February that it's not going to happen. "I know there is lots of Shenmue love out there, but it's a Sega game. We can't build it," he said at the time.

The cult series, originally planned as a trilogy for the Dreamcast and left unfinished after the second game, has not been seen since the release of Shenmue II on the original Xbox in 2002. In November, Sega confirmed that a mysterious Shenmue 3 trademark was actually a fake.

Suzuki gave a Shenmue postmortem talk at GDC last month. You can watch it below.

Though a new Shenmue game doesn't sound likely, Spencer said that Microsoft will have the "best lineup of content in a long time" in store for E3 in June. It's this content that Spencer no doubt hopes will help the Xbox One catch up to Sony's PlayStation 4.

"We're early on in the console generation, and obviously Sony's having a great launch," he said. "Console gaming is doing incredibly well right now. Six months ago, everybody wondered if console gaming was dead... but this is a long, multi-year generation and my fundamental belief is that great games create the best platforms."

Shenmue did modern open-world gaming before modern open-world gaming was a thing. If done properly, a sequel might find a much larger audience that is accustomed to playing games like Assassin's Creed, Arkham, Infamous, Crackdown, etc. It needs more combat and action, but it could definitely work.

There is a reason SEGA is no longer making Shenmue games, it doesn't sell as many copies as people would like to think. It's core audience loves it, but most people don't. I thought it was an ok game, a bit too slow if you ask me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Shenmue, as much as I love the franchise, is absolutely a reason why you cannot form a consensus based on internet comment sections. As much as these sections make it seem like everybody is clamoring for this and that, Shenmue was weak in its output. These people can claim that Shenmue will sell millions based on internet chatter, but it will be lucky to see even close to a million (and I am being generous).

<< LINK REMOVED >> it doesn't matter...they could have the greatest lineup and you'd still find some reason for Xbox negativity.

Well Nintendo did make a deal with Platinum Games for Bayonetta 2 so if MS wants Shenmue 3, MS is going to need to make a big deal with Sega with a butload of Money. Never care for this series so I'm sure you have fun with it anyway.

Actually it isn't a Sega game anymore. They lost the trademark in January. No excuses Spencer, you want to get those dusty XBones off store shelves, this is a great start.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They lost the trademark (the name) not the copyright, and only in the USA/

<< LINK REMOVED >> You do know that Sega still owns the engine and franchise right? Someone in the US could make a game with the title "Shenmue" and it could be a game about swatting flies. However, a loss of the trademark doesn't mean that Sega no longer owns the actual franchise.
