Xbox One won't automatically record all Achievements

Director of product planning clarifies that developers can put conditions on automatic recording moments, but not every Achievement will be captured by default.

The Xbox One's Game DVR feature will not automatically record every Achievement a player unlocks, Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello has clarified on NeoGAF.

"It won't be automatic for every Achievement. It's a feature that developers can unlock for achievements, OR, for instance, have hidden in the game for doing something cool or discovering something hidden," Penello said. "Basically, we allow developers access to Game DVR and they can put conditions on an automatic recording."

"But not every Achievement will automatically be recorded," he added.

It was previously said by an Xbox Australia representative that the Xbox One would in fact automatically record the moment a player unlocks all achievements.

Separately, a Microsoft representative provided a statement with more insight into the ways in which content can be captured on Xbox One using Game DVR.

"Xbox One keeps a rolling record of your most recent gameplay, and there are two main ways for this video to be captured by Game DVR," the representative said. "First, game developers mark 'greatest clips' that happen within the game that represent fun and interesting moments within gameplay, such as when you unlock certain Achievements. Additionally, you can also issue commands, with either your voice or the controller, to capture interesting moments you would like to record or that just happened."

The Game DVR feature for Xbox One continually records around five minutes of footage in the background, which players can then process through Microsoft's Upload studio and share with friends.

Captured content can be shared only through Xbox Live at launch, with support for social networking sites like Facebook coming later. The Xbox One launches on November 22 for $500.

@A_Rabid_Dog It is clear that you don't like Microsoft or the Xbox One since you leave a smart ass comment on every one of their articles. So why read them? Do you not get enough attention at home?

@A_Rabid_Dog It wasn't a 180. It was never the truth in the first place. Someone just mispoke.

@engenderreality @A_Rabid_Dog That doesn't make it not a 180. If the PR department can't get a grasp on the product they are selling, then they need to shut their mouths before they look stupid. Case and point is this article (and practically every other one).

@krystyla @A_Rabid_Dog @engenderreality This itself? No. Normally it would not be a setback.

But this happens EVERY. FUCKING. DAY. with them.

@krystyla @A_Rabid_Dog @engenderreality Who cares about the authors. The readers are the ones that will be buying the product. Most people don't even read articles; they just browse headlines. If a reader sees "Microsoft does X" and then sees "Microsoft DOESN'T do X", they are going to be confused. IT has nothing to do with the article, but the press releases from MS.

@krystyla @A_Rabid_Dog @engenderreality See my other comments. Regardless of who spoke and what is true, the fact is that they are, once again, confusing their consumers. If a consumer is confused about a product they are buying, they are likely to go with a competing brand that they know more about.

The blind Xbox hate is ridiculous and MS's bowing to what any idiot on the internet says is even sadder. MS could say there's an option to have the system boot into a game in the disc tray and they'd get ridiculous hate. Then they'd cave and come back saying they've removed the code that lets you play games off of disc.

I'm still leaning towards them but it's sad to see a company capitulate so much to pure nonsense and feel the need to retreat on literally anything anyone has an issue with, even if the issue is clearly just people trolling.

@Senor_Kami Even then it's still not good to have lies spread about your product that potentially can lose sales.

Does one hand know what the other hand is doing. Who the hell passes out the Memo's. How would one want to invest into something when many of their public and official statements have greasy fingers all over it. What ever happened to professionalism or is that not part of MS and it's Suits. XboxBoneHeads Move.

Well, I respect the Xbox One purchasers, but so many revisions, so much confusion, I personally am going for a PS4. I recently purchased a Wii U, and I got exactly what I heard and read about, and I enjoy that, I have fun playing wind waker and I look forward to more games on the Wii U, the innovative design is quite interesting! I like it. / off topic. Anyway, yes I agree, it is a huge cable spaghetti when I see Microsoft's announcements, I don't even know anymore what's what.

Playing Wind Waker HD has reminded me a lost era of gaming where a simple yet effective story and good gameplay always came ahead of technical aspects like graphics and computer things. I'm happy with my Wii u and it's ability to not need a TV, it's light and easy to move around too, so it's a real good mobile console. :)

@Sorrow_316 That's normal in any large company. The thing is no other company or product is so closely and intensively watched like Microsoft with Xbox One. That's why you only know about Microsoft in this regard, even though it happens hundred of times each and every day.

Everything Microsoft says nowadays is made into sensation and published right away.

@wizaard88 @Sorrow_316 No, it's not like that with every company. A company as large as Microsoft needs to have a proper PR department, who would be the experts on the products and the only ones allowed to release approved statements regarding the item they are trying to sell. Having an incompetent marketing team makes the whole company look incompetent, and if MS hasn't figured this out by now, they need to drop out of the console race. No one takes their word anymore.

****, they had to release a whole new marketing campaign at GameStop just to point out the facts of their console because consumers can't tell truth from lies anymore.

@A_Rabid_Dog @wizaard88 I have been on both sides of the situation, I know very well how this works. Local branches of a company meet with people during formal or informal meetings, or give mostly informal "interviews" to local press. The reps in local branches don't have most accurate or up-to-date info but share what they know - they must do that or the press/attendees will talk bad about them.

This kind of info usually gets to community forums or blogs, and are corrected or explained later on.

But this is not the case of Xbox One. The pressure, bias and media trying to make every line, every word of MS reps into sensation is unbelieveable.

So what is right? Local MS reps should be silent? Then you and press would say they're not sharing info. If they say something not entirely accurate during mostly informal meetings, it's considered to be bad as well.
