Xbox Exec Responds to NES Classic Shortages, As Nintendo Promises More Stock

"Irrationally angry at not being able to get the NES Classic."

Having trouble finding a NES Classic console? You're not alone. The system quickly sold out at retailers following its launch on Friday. Now, Microsoft Studios publishing GM Shannon Loftis has weighed in on the matter, while Nintendo has promised more stock is coming.

She wrote on Twitter today, "Irrationally angry at not being able to get the NES Classic. Come on, Nintendo. Why would you short-bake these??" Dan Ayoub, the head of Halo developer 343, jumped in to say, "Right!??? I was refreshing Amazon like a crazy person."

It's worth pointing out that Nintendo sent Xbox boss Phil Spencer a NES Classic system days before it was released.

You might have a hard time find a NES Classic right now, but that may not be the case for much longer. Nintendo said on Twitter that it plans to have more units available through the holiday.

The NES Classic costs $60 and comes with 30 games, including some of the console's best ones like Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and Pac-Man.

For more on what to expect on the Classic Edition--whenever you might be able to get your hands on one--read our full review.

Nintendo does this on purpose. They did it with the Wii to create artificial hype. Did it with 3DS. Did it with Amiibo and I knew they would do it with the Ness Mini. Good luck pre-ordering a Nintendo Switch. Preorders will be sold out within an hour.

@kaliskonig: They do it so they don't potentially lose money on stock that wasn't bought.

@kaliskonig: Most companies do this to see what kind of reaction they will get. I rather wait until everyone had feasted and get it. It is not a burning want right now being I played some of those games years ago. I bet they might give SNES a go sooner or later.

@kaliskonig: Agreed. I learned my lesson with the Wii. For months I could not find it and people kept raving about how awesome it was. Hype. When I finally saw it in Target one day (and they had 2 left in stock), I just bought it without giving it a second thought. Wii Sports was great, for an hour. After that... holy crap. Lots of regret.

So basically with this mini NES and when it was announced, I thought it was cool. But when I found out you can't pre-order it in advance and that stores would only carry like 24 of them? Screw that. I don't want it anymore.

@GRTooCool: Had the same issue. Picked up a wii for the family, but was lucky to get one right away. Got bored fast...but the hype train was real.

Managed to trade the wii with 4wiimotes and 4 dongles with a few games straight over for an xbox360 Halo 3 edition with 3 controllers and 15+ games. All with reciept and boxes.

Double my money on that one :) and had much more fun, although must admit, I later picked up a wii for $100 off craigslist after the hypetrain died. Some of those first party titles were calling to me.

I would rather have a SNES mini/classic as I grew up on that and the Genesis.

@spazoutmike: It would be rad if they did a whole series. Mini SNES, N64, that would be awesome. SEGA should jump in too. I'd love to have a mini genesis. Have you seen the special edition of the new Sonic 2d game? Comes with a cool Sonic figure standing on a Genesis.

@FLEEBS: really? So the Wii wasn't released in limited amount over the holiday and didn't sell for huge amounts on ebay and didn't become a successful console that even non gamers liked? **** off.

@zerohournow: Man. All of you people (including the people below who posted before I posted this response) need to chill out. My point is that the Wii didn't sell 100 million consoles simply by virtue of the short supply that plagued the release of the system that lasted for about a year. There was a huge reason the Wii had hype and held that hype for years. The NES classic will not maintain any sort of this kind of hype. Nintendo keeping the NES Classic in short supply will not have a similar "I have to buy it now or I won't get one for months" effect as the release of the Wii. And even if it does, a mass majority of people won't care about a niche console that plays emulated 30 year old 8 bit games. I believe the OP jumped the gun in his comment, but obviously so did I, and I shouldn't have been such an asshole. Let's move on folks.

Newsflash: not everyone wants a lesser quality emulator. Not everyone wants the original old console. Not everyone wants to use their PC for an emulator. Please stop talking about just getting an emulator. It's an old argument to make. Nintendo is still crappy for not keeping up with demand.

No reason for this at all. Its not a supply and demand problem. Nintendo is doing this on purpose to keep the hype going into the holidays. Its brilliant really. Because it draws even more attention to the upcoming Switch. Well played Nintendo. I think its cool and I want one myself.

But, the deal breaker for me are those short controller cords. I cant play that close on my 65" 4k tv. I know they was going for the retro theme. Even with the controllers. But, this is 2016. Not the 1980's.

@fattiesgonewild: Honestly, the best bet for these is to run a long HDMI cord, and keep the console next to you. A lot of people focus on the short cord, and say oh buy an extension, or longer controller, but all your saves, game switching, etc has to be done by pressing the reset button on the console. So you have to get up, a lot and hit that button. So you might as well skip buying a new controller, and just get an extra long HDMI and keep it next to you. Another flaw in the mini NES b/c they didnt add a home button to the controller.

It's cute that rivals love Nintendo that much. Nintendo might make weaker hardware, but they sure pack a punch when it comes to games themselves.

Thank goodness I still have my 3 NESes. One that was there before I was born, one that my brother and I received that could read Japanese games, and a third one that came in a bundle. If the original one dies, at least I'll have 2 more. All of them are alive and kicking.

@batts86:TLDR: People like Nintendo games.

Even their Wii U games had success (despite the console's laughable sales). Had they gone 3rd party, they'd own lots of developers. Sega dropped in quality and diversity big time. They have 3 series keeping them afloat (as far as I know), Yakuza, Hatsune Miku (which isn't even their character to begin with), and PSO, with random titles released like that Rhythm Thief game on 3DS (it doesn't happen often, so they bought Atlus to compensate for their lack of releases I guess?). Even Sonic Lost Worlds, which looked like one of the best Sonic in ages (especially in comparison to that Boom stuff...), was not liked that much (and it was based on Sonic Extreme, a cancelled Saturn game).

Sonic was bad since Shadow the Hedgehog (the game had a handful of nice levels, but the story, ESPECIALLY the ending, was horrible), and they ignore most of their IPs (Nintendo does ignore Metroid, but Sega takes the cherry and the cake).

Out of all the long time Japanese developers, Nintendo is one of the best (if not the best). Capcom dropped (even SFV was a joke at launch), Konami dropped HARD (they even shifted business), Sega is MIRACULOUSLY starting to get better (after a ton of failures), Square Enix tries to adapt with westernized JRPGs (FFXV), which is a risk (but it seems people in general love FFXV, so, yay?).

If Xenoblade Chronicles X was on PC, PS4, or XB1, it would have sold a lot more than people could expect. I wasn't talking about just the NES Classic, but Nintendo in general that creates stuff people like (excluding consoles since the Wii).

I know many said about Xenoblade Chronicles X that it was a shame it was on Wii U. Most people like the games Nintendo creates, or that they somehow get released as exclusives (excluding Devil's Third), but they just don't like Nintendo's consoles anymore (gimmick, and rather inferior hardware).

Short cable aside, they should have made it wifi compatible for people to add more games to. A simple download/streaming machine, they already have the market place.

@7tizz: "Such a shame the arcade games are NES versions and not arcade."

It's a tribute to the NES. That's like expecting the N64, PC, and Dreamcast versions of Rayman 2 by Ancel's main team on PSN, rather than the stripped PSOne version by Ubisoft Shanghai.

@7tizz: I do agree, but I think they were looking for license free "classics" that people remember the system for. Ms Pac Man (I know you said Pac Man) is one of my favorite games of all time, but it doesn't remind me of the NES like MegaMan 2 or some of these other titles. Same with Donkey Kong. Most people think arcade, and if it was an arcade game, they probably didn't want it on the list. I do find it strange that Castlevania 2 is on the system (I understand the first). 2 was kind of garbage and they could have used that spot for something much better. River City Ransom anyone? Actually, I'm pretty sure that is on the Famicom mini. Those cords are fused to the system, uhhgggg.

I enjoy seeing gaming companies get along like this. Ms excited about getting a rival system isn't something u see much, especially in this day in age with everyone seemingly divided. This is good for games. Regardless of what company u support we are all gamers.

@rtehrani: Here's the thing, the game companies generally do get along. It's the media and the fanboys that push the console war bs. The companies and developers themselves don't really care that much. Yes they are competitors but all they are really worried about is the profit of their own system and regardless of the current console war they have all made solid profits from their various systems. The only time the console war matters at all to them is when one side is losing so badly that they aren't making their money back.

@rtehrani: It's not a rival system though...nobody who was yesterday wanting an XB1(or PS4 for that)is today thinking "Hell no, a new kid is in town! I want the NES instead!"

This is a nostalgia trip, a side b*tch so to say not a rival, not competition.
