Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Says Price Hikes Are Coming, But Not Until After The Holidays

"I do think at some point we'll have to raise the prices on certain things..."

Speaking today at a Wall Street Journal event in southern California, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said he believes prices for certain Xbox products or services will go up, but not until after the holidays.

"I do think at some point we'll have to raise the prices on certain things, but going into this holiday we thought it was important to maintain the prices," Spencer told the audience, as relayed by Tom Warren of The Verge.

Spencer was apparently speaking generally about price increases at Xbox and not about any one specific product or service. But people are assuming he's referring to potential price increases for Xbox consoles or services like Xbox Game Pass.

Subscription services across entertainment regularly see their prices increased--Disney+ is the latest to see a price hike, rising to $11/month in December. Netflix, Hulu, and others raise prices from time to time as well.

If it's a price increase for the Xbox console that's coming, that wouldn't be too surprising, either. Supply chain and logistical issues have driven up production costs, and Microsoft could decide to pass along the costs to the consumer with a price hike. Sony did this with its recent PS5 price hike in certain regions.

In August, in the wake of Sony raising the price of the PS5, Microsoft said it was "constantly evaluating" its business with respect to pricing, but the existing US MSRPs for the Series S ($300 USD) and Series X ($500) will remain in place for the time being. The company never, however, strictly ruled out a price hike down the road.

Not raising prices until after the holidays is seemingly a strategic decision on Microsoft's behalf to help make the Xbox platform stand out even more as a more economical choice for people getting into gaming. After all, the real money in games comes from software and services, so even if the profit margins on Xbox consoles take a hit due to the supply chain and logistics issues, software and service revenue could help fill the gap.

Microsoft's Xbox division is riding high right now. Xbox made more money over the past three months than it ever has during a different Q1 period in the company's 20-year history.

Ultimate Game Pass $17.99 or $19.99 a month. I wonder if Series S controller goes to $65 as I seen them on sale for $49.99 regularly. Might have to stock up on a white Series S controller backup come Black Friday.

@gamerbum: Actually, I've yet to see a single Xbox controller outlive my NES controllers. Or my Playstation controllers. Or any controller, really. They work for about a year, then they get so drifty they become useless for pretty much any game that requires them, and the D-pads have never been that precise.

@Barighm: This actually is pretty true. All of my Xbox controllers (why do i have so fucking many???) seem to be steadily breaking down. The most painful was when my "elite" controller ($150) shit the bucket. I'm a PS5/PC - but I really loved the Xbox Elite controller. The PS5 controllers are sturdy as ****, I've got all my controllers going back to the PS1 and they stil be kickin.

Ah yes gamepass with its mostly old games will definitely go up.. but thanks to good ol competition my ps plus membership got better for like 15 bucks I was able to upgrade for the year and get access to sonys library of mostly old games, exclusives and indies .. atleast both are a better value than switch online with expansion pass

I still don't think it will be hardware increases.

I'm betting its a Game Pass subscription increase

(at least at first)

Huh. I thought they would keep the price down longer than that.

Yeah the news has not been good. Ever increasing bandwidth prices and DDPs service prices, lower software sales, poorer online performances, ever bigger delays in xbox exclusives. I was really wishing that 9th gen MS xbox and Nintendo would have more aggressively fought harder during this console generation or at least gotten off to a better start.

I hope that with hikes, also comes some prices drops. Notably, getting rid of proprietary SSD, format and allowing any M.2 SDD with speeds of 5k and higher to work. Lower prices on digital games, outside of gamepass. And lower prices on licensed xbox peripherals, specifically past gens. A controller from 2005 still costing MSRP $40, just crazy.

@jenovaschilld:

What are you talking about? With the Xbox having the most affordable and most powerful console the best subscription service by far their overall offerings is the best and most compelling. Even David Jaffee a an ex sony dev said that the Xbox is the best offering right now.

@gamerbum: That news article here about xbox services and software all down 3%, with worry about increases in all cloud services up, due to streaming costs. Hardware sales up, they are able to move more consoles !! yeah. Yeah gamepass is awesome.

Still though, very few AAA exclusives. And they are far behind 2:1 at last count in hardware sold.

NEws that developers are having to code down, in order to meet the requirements of playing on the Xbox series S, means less financial resources to port the best version to X.

Nothing wrong with the 9th gen xbox, love it, but they need some compelling exclusives ... like, last week. Even if the machine is more powerful, developers are coding toward ps5 first and porting over to xbox second.

Not sure what world your in, but the news has not been all rosy.

@gamerbum: Given Jaffe said Spencer "sucks" and is bad at management, and that YOU said it, that's likely not true.

@jenovaschilld: That's not true. They were discontinued and replaced by the X1 controller. What you're likely seeing is crappy third party Chinese controllers, and I do mean crappy. I got one. The sticks are useless. I use it just for retro games, now.

@jenovaschilld: Weird, you'd think the efficient business thing would be to make the Series controller compatible with the 360, and push people to buy that instead. It has the same 2.4Ghz wifi, so it should be technically possible...
