Xbox 720 to require Internet connection?

Sources say new machine will require constant broadband connection, block secondhand titles, and ship with a new iteration of Kinect.

Additional alleged Xbox 720 details have come to light today. Sources speaking to Edge said that the platform will require an Internet connection to function and that a new version of Xbox Live will be an "integral" component of Microsoft's new platform. Though Microsoft is reportedly "absolutely committed" to online functionality for its new machine, games will still be offered in physical form, the sources said.

No Caption Provided

In addition, the sources said games for the new system will ship with activation codes and "have no value beyond the initial user." This falls in line with a report from last year, which said the Xbox 720 could block used games in some way. Analysts do not believe this is likely.

These games will reportedly be manufactured on 50GB Blu-ray discs, an upgrade from the DVD drive the Xbox 360 currently sports. Sony's PlayStation 3 supports Blu-ray, and it has since it was first launched in 2006. Blu-ray disc capacity is significantly greater than that of DVD.

In addition, the sources said Microsoft will ship a new version of Kinect alongside the Xbox 720. No further information was made available, though a previous report said "Kinect V2" could support four-player full-body tracking and allow gamers to sit down while playing. In addition, this technology is believed to adapt to players' living rooms, meaning they will not need to move furniture for an optimal experience.

Lastly, Edge's sources said the previously rumored Xbox 720's specifications will include an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800 MHz graphics solution, and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. At present, the platform's hard drive capacity is still reportedly up in the air.

An Xbox 360 successor is, of course, still unannounced. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, “We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don’t have anything further to share at this time.”

It may not be long before that changes, as the platform holder is rumored to announce the Xbox 720 during an Apple-style media presentation in late March, perhaps in conjunction with the 2013 Game Developers Conference.

Sony is holding a "PlayStation Meeting" February 20 in New York City where the company is rumored to announce the PlayStation 4. GameSpot will be in attendance.

Holly cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gamespot missed A HUGE piece of information from that Edge article:

"Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage."

^^^ PS4 is not only more powerful but also easier to code for. Holly cow, that would be a win-win for Sony and a complete reversal of PS2-3.

@BestJinjo

And you believe any of that article? There is obviously little to no truth in that "report" and was either "leaked" by a SONY troll/fanboy or employee. The "leak" has an obvious SONY slant to it. And the "get closer to the metal of its box" comment can also mean that SONY is taking a similar approach to the PS3 where they left the developers to "figure it out" on their own instead of supplying them with the necessary development tools.

@BestJinjo PS4 has a hardware a bit stronger. The OS is lighter than Xbox's. And they allow devs to go closer to the OS core. PS4 will be faster than the new Xbox for sure.

@ClaudiusCaesar @BestJinjo Sony already stated that they are not competing with 720's power. Essentially eluding to the fact that the PS4 will be somewhat weaker than the 720.

@ClaudiusCaesar @BestJinjo Just like the PS3 was so much faster than the 360. Funny how most every single multiplatform game played significantly better overall on the 360.

@joshmonus @BestJinjo Do you know why Xbox games are a bit better than PS3. Because, even though PS3 has more raw power, devs found it to difficult to dev for it. So, it doesn't matter all the power if people don't know how use it. But, now, looks like Sony learn from that and PS4 will be dev friendly.

So, the red ring of dead wasn't bad enough for Microsoft, they want to take outages to a whole new level of annoyance, lossing all the money they can and forcing xbox players to go out and get a Wii U... great plan

@lexluis @ClaudiusCaesar Wii U is not a next-gen console, but more of a filler/bridge between the current and next-gen.

There's no way Microsoft would do these things. They would be alienating a very large group of people and that's not what they want. They're trying to pull in MORE gamers, not drive them to Sony.

Personally, I think these journalists make-up these rumors so they have something to write about. They all have the supposed unnamed insider that knows the final specs. Well if these writers actually had real insiders then every article should list the same specs, because the consoles specs aint changing from article to article. Every article I read lists different shit. Nobody knows anything and they're all just makin shit up.

@BestJinjo That's exactly why I unplug the Kinect when I'm not using it. Cause you know Microsoft could just type in a Gamer Tag, link into the Kinect and watch you through it whether the machine's on or not. Sick Bastards!!!

@Vodoo That's actually a brilliant idea if you think about it. Ship a device that monitors humans as part of a gaming toy without them even knowing. 75 million and counting and more next gen. Obviously an unlikely conspiracy theory on my part but man it sure would be clever.

@BestJinjo @Vodoo I bet they have to have top-level clearance at MS to access the bank vault like room where they keep the big screen monitors that peer into peoples' homes. You know they're doing it. They put the perfect device into our homes under the guise of a gaming peripheral, meanwhile they're watching and listening to everything in the household.

Next time you're in front of your Kinect, with the Xbox turned off, look at it. You can almost see them watching you.

@DouglassIndust @ColonelEnder I think if God exists, he probably would have wanted us to be productive and contributing members to society. I view playing games as a 'wasteful' form of self-indulgence/entertainment if looking at it from his point of view. I am pretty sure he would have wanted people to leave a mark on the world and others, not spend hours fragging out in COD.

@DouglassIndust @ColonelEnder That's because by definition our economic system, capitalism, is based on the greater good for the individual, rather the greater good of the collective. The values of capitalism are inconsistent with what religion preaches - which is equal opportunity and equal rights for everyone.

@daBrokenFace Don't forget even more Season Passes/Day 1 DLC, micro-transactions, more sequel rehashes, more cinematics over gameplay, more QTEs, even less challenging games aimed to attract more mainstream/casual gamers, possibly splitting the game into a single player and multiplayer to milk a $60 game into a $90-100 one; episodic gaming where each 3hr part is $20 for a total of 5 parts....etc.

And all the things you list happen on SONY's and Nintendo's consoles as well. Plus there is nothing inherently wrong with a Season Pass as all it does is give you a discount for buying a bulk of the upcoming DLC and is still available after all the DLC is released (and many times put on sale as well).

I think it's a great idea. People will have to pay the original price if they want to play the game instead of pirating the copy for $5.

@Alucard1475 Who says anything about pirating used games for $5? We are talking about say trading games with your friends, or trading up your games. Unless you are the shareholder of EA/Activision or work for one/developer of games, then how is having more expensive original games great for us gamers?
