Wipeout Pulse racing to PSPs

Futurustic racing series' PSP follow-up coming this September; game to feature seven modes, wireless multiplayer, 24 tracks, eight teams.

When the PlayStation Portable launched in March 2005, one of the better reviewed launch titles was Wipeout Pure, a portable version of Sony's popular racing series. Today, Sony announced that the franchise is returning to its handheld with the upcoming Wipeout Pulse.

The new game is currently in development by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Studio Liverpool, which is also working on a PlayStation 3 edition of the Wipeout franchise. Wipeout Pulse will be a PSP exclusive and is due out in September.

As is tradition with the series, gamers will race along at high speeds in futuristic vehicles outfitted with weapons. New to the franchise with Pulse is a mag-strip, a part of the track that locks the vehicles onto the track, allowing them to race through loops, 90-degree-angled parts of the track, and steep drops.

There will be seven different modes, wireless support, 24 new tracks, and eight teams. Sony promises that downloadable content will be available immediately when the game is released. The game's soundtrack features tracks from Stanton Warriors, Loco Dice, and Mason, but players can opt to play their own MP3 files from a memory stick.

people get WAY too into this. you know they do when they begin to explode over fzero comparison and such. this enws is for those who specifically love the franchise. if you want Fzero news, just wait. its not hard to figure out what is your favorite franchise. besides these 2 are totally different game. the only similar thing is that there both high speed futuristic racers with nitro. calm down gamer nerds.

@GrimBee they cant make Wipeout to any other system now.Studio Liverpool belongs to Sony now. Back then Psygnosis made Wipeout for Nintendo 64 .But Later Sony bought Psygnosis reformed it and now its Studio Liverpool. They cant go multiplatform.

"If I want to play F-Zero I'll play F-Zero, not a knock-off." So that means you NEVER play games of a similar genre?!? Thats like saying "I will never watch goodfellas, because its a knock off of the godfather...".. WipEout helped soar the ps1 in the uk, it introduced a new kind of gamer to the system. wipEout (imo) made the ps1 popular in the uk when battling against the saturn. It was one of THOSE games which showed the power differences between the two, and also its hip music selection really made other games step up with their liscenced tracks. Anyways - WipEout Pure is better than the most recent f-zero 3d version, I think so. Also - why knock a good game down? If someone made a game similar to resident evil, I wouldn't slate it or refuse to play it because its a "knock-off". I mean, if I had that attitude I would of never to of gotten to play Silent Hill, one of my favourite game series of all time!! WipEout is a perfect psp game, it would suck on the ds because wipeout games NEED fast graphics and prescision to be good, and especially show off the atmosphere. They could remake wipeout 2097 for the ds (great game) though... But I am glad the series is staying on a Sony platform. This way you can play the entire series on one machine :) One thing this game should do is be able to link with the ps3 version. But one thing which would be bad is, if the ps3 is meant to change the genre with tilty support - whats going to happen to the psp which doesnt have tilty support? It would be like microsoft releasing a portable gaming system, having a gears of war game for it, and then having no voice work in the game... The future of the psp/ps3 is a bit confusing to me, but if WipEout can push some boundaries of the two consoles, you know - give us some reasons why the consoles are worth the cash, then im in!

I think it's fair to say Wipeout Pure was a big game for the PSP when the hand-held first launched so I can't help but to look forward to this follow-up.

Still not buying one (PSP). If I want to play F-Zero I'll play F-Zero, not a knock-off. When I need more than five fingers to count the must haves for PSP I'll buy one, my guess is by that time they will either have updated (fixed) the hardware and it'll have been a good choice to wait it out, or conceded victory to DS and stop producing/shipping systems all together, either way... meh.

Liverpool will always be a top developer. They are one of few that gave away free add-on packs etc. for their games. A really great company and game developer.

reply to the people questioning the downloads: the downloadable is not exclusive for ps3, a lot of psp games already have downloadable content via the web or just a button away ingame. please don't make assumptions like that immediately. the downloadable content lets them add more stuff in as people play so there are new tracks all the time, it's actually a good deal, since wipeout pure had a lot of downloadable tracks and those rocked.

Why add downloadable content immediately after the game is launched? Why not just put it on the game disc? Unless they are planning to charge us for it...

Darn it. Stupid headline. I thought this was going to be a funny story about one of the worst games ever made being ported to the PSP, but instead it's just an article about YAWG (Yet another Wipeout Game). *yawn*
