Wipeout Pulse racing to PSPs

Futurustic racing series' PSP follow-up coming this September; game to feature seven modes, wireless multiplayer, 24 tracks, eight teams.

When the PlayStation Portable launched in March 2005, one of the better reviewed launch titles was Wipeout Pure, a portable version of Sony's popular racing series. Today, Sony announced that the franchise is returning to its handheld with the upcoming Wipeout Pulse.

The new game is currently in development by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Studio Liverpool, which is also working on a PlayStation 3 edition of the Wipeout franchise. Wipeout Pulse will be a PSP exclusive and is due out in September.

As is tradition with the series, gamers will race along at high speeds in futuristic vehicles outfitted with weapons. New to the franchise with Pulse is a mag-strip, a part of the track that locks the vehicles onto the track, allowing them to race through loops, 90-degree-angled parts of the track, and steep drops.

There will be seven different modes, wireless support, 24 new tracks, and eight teams. Sony promises that downloadable content will be available immediately when the game is released. The game's soundtrack features tracks from Stanton Warriors, Loco Dice, and Mason, but players can opt to play their own MP3 files from a memory stick.

I had heard that the next Wipeout was being developed, but to be released in September? That quick? I was only thinking about purchasing the slimmer Playstation Portable when it releases in North America but it's thanks to my love of the Wipeout franchise that it's now a question of when, not if. Beautiful screenshots too and I'm sure that the techno soundtrack will be just as appealing as the first. Imagine this game on your television using the TV out connection of the upcoming slimmer PSPs...

When it says it has wireless multiplayer, does that include Wi-Fi play? That was the only problem with WipeOut Pure, it needed Online Play!

I hope they keep the controls as in Wipeout Pure. I have a hard time with the old way now that it's so easy to control. :P Is the Mag strip really new? I remember track 3 on katmoda 12 in fusion which also had a orange strip before a very steep drop.

Just so you know, you could put your own cd in Wipeout 2097 (the second wipeout game on playstation 1) and it would play the music, and you could select tracks through the in-game options menu. way before xbox or whatever ;) others probably did it before too. >ObiKKa >iku94 >"oh, being able to play your own music over a game isn't exactly >original, the 360 came out with that first, personally i dont like it too >much since the game music of the games i play captures the >atmosphere of the game" The Xbox 1 already did that before its esteemed descendant Xbox 360. Lol.

That's cool. The PSP needs good games, which sadly it doesn't really have many of... even after all this time.

I never did take the time to play Wipeout Pure but I certainly am interested in seeing what new things have been cooked up for this new game. One of the most exciting features is the ability to play your own music in the game. I've wondered for some time why this hasn't been implemented in other PSP games or on any PS3 games. Hopefully this will open the door for this to be a semi-standard feature on games in the future. No reason the XBOX should have a lock on this type of functionality. :)

"Tell that to the six minute load times, the faulty square button and the forty-five minute battery life. I however do agree that Wipeout sucks." -Bubnux Try 10 second load times, a perfectly fine square button, and a 6 hour battery life, lol. That, and Wipeout is a pretty decent racer.

Players can choose to play their own mp3s? Between the game's well-chosen soundtrack and my own mix, I can't decide! Me and my perfectly fine square button are looking forward to this! And the PS3 one as well! PS Odmillan's views on the DS are absolutely spot on. Anyone wonder why the DS is inferior? If an explanation on why the DS sucks is needed, well, get a life, scummers!

I think these comments are supposed to be where people put useful or relevant information, if you don't have anything more interesting to say than "cool" don't say anything.

Rock on!!! I wonder if the DS is capable of ... never mind, in my opinion, the DS sucks and is nothing more than a portable nostalgia machine for all of those who didn't get to play the 2 billion versions of Mario, Metriod, and Zelda. Heck, Nintendo sucks!!! Thanks to their over simplistic Wii-mote and last-gen graphics true next-gen consoles are now suffering! People should think before they fall into the hype of the media and the "impossible to find DS and Wii." No wonder people buy them as soon as they see them. But they don't know or are capable of understanding that Nintendo has another 2 billion in stock. So next time you turn on your Xbox 360 or PS3 and you see nothing but a Wii port, make sure you thank all of those suckers that fell into the hype. That's my rant of the day!

Sounds amazing!! If it has the high speeds of F- Zero GX, I'll get it and the custom soundtrack and online modes sound excellent. Now, if only Sony added Custom Soundtrack support in their PS3 Update!!!

@JoeSmith34 This is a move forward in the series. Anyhow, I just really hope they add Infrastructure online support. A pervious article said it would, but I would have expected them to mention it again here if it were true.

Wipeout isn't a good game series, in my opinion. There aren't enough features, and it is just the same old stuff in every version. It's time to move on and make something new.
