Wii U 'isn't going to work' says Pachter

Wedbush Securities' analyst skeptical of Nintendo's new console, says company won't get "lucky" again; claims Activision and others pressured firm into developing Pro Controller.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has offered some harsh words about Nintendo's forthcoming Wii U console, saying during a Develop Conference presentation last week (via Edge) that the system plainly "isn't going to work."

Pachter probably isn't investing in Nintendo stock.
Pachter probably isn't investing in Nintendo stock.

"I don’t get it," he said. "I think that essentially this is a solution in search of a problem. I mean, somebody had an idea--'let's make the controller a tablet'--and there aren't many games that are going to take advantage of that."

Pachter also claimed that Activision and publishers of other major franchises pressured Nintendo into developing the Wii U Pro Controller, a more traditional gamepad.

"Activision never said anything to me," he explained, "but I know that [for] big games like Call Of Duty they said, 'No, we're not putting it on there if you don't give us a conventional controller'. So they gave in."

Pachter had little faith in the original Wii at launch in 2006, calling the system "gimmicky." That system exploded with regards to popularity upon launch, and is currently the top-selling current-generation console. Pachter admitted this was true, but claimed that Nintendo's success will not be repeated.

"[The Wii] worked, they got lucky, [but] I don't think they're getting lucky with Wii U," he said. "I don't think they suck. I just think that they really believe that, 'If we're still novel, everything we do will work'. This isn't going to work. Hardcore gamers will buy them; hardcore Nintendo fanboys will buy it. They could put out a piece of cardboard and say that it'll play Mario and they'll buy it."

The Wii U is due out worldwide this holiday season.

I agree 100% with him. The Wii U looks like the pile of steaming crap, with a tablet controller. Gimmicks DO NOT make good games. EVER. So, who exactly would enjoy having to look from controller screen to HDTV screen constantly? Not me. Not interested. The Wii U isn't even 1% interesting to me.

How does Pachter still have a job? He's proven in the past that he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

i think the wii u will work, but i understand where he is coming from. as an owner of all pre wii (lol) nintendo console nintendo has made some pretty bad decision about consoles. the gamecube while it had a few bright spots sucked as a system. the n64 was the begin of the decisions. we can all pretend that nintendo can do no wrong but they have always been gamblers and their just now paying back old debts.

i just think that the Wii U is trying to appeal to the hardcore gamers as well, and when hardcore third party games will come out in 2 years from now they wont be ported to the Wii U since it will be behind the times with the next gen consoles. i think that once the next xbox and PS come out the Wii U will be left with only first party games. but as pachter said - the nintendo crowd will buy anything with the nintendo logo on it, and im sure 1st party mario games will sell nicely. but the casual market who bought the Wii won't buy the Wii U for casual games. the Wii succeeded because there was a huge untapped well of casual gamers with no cheap console. now, with the tablets and smart phone games and the old Wii, is that crowd still hungry? after all - it stopped buying the Wii. it had enough. that crowd is either happy with the Wii or phone games or will look for something that is a step up, and im not sure the Wii U is a big enough of a step up.

By the way, if you watch the video of Assassin's Creed 3 which compares the PS3 version to the Wii U, you'll see that the graphics look noticeably sharper on the Wii U. It's definitely a step up from the current HD consoles, so coming from the Wii, it's a pretty large step. Much larger than will be noticeable from the next Sony and Microsoft consoles (compared to the Wii U).

It's fairly easy to scale graphics down on modern hardware. Not only that, but the main difference between Nintendo's hardware and the other companies will likely come down to tessellation and other subtle effects. I don't think the average gamer will see a noticeable difference with Nintendo's hardware. Sony and Microsoft are not building expensive machines that will be far ahead of their time like they did last time. They can't afford to take more huge losses on hardware or try to sell them at $500 a pop (although Sony probably will).

If Nintendo can launch for $299, then they'll have competitive hardware, an early lead (which is not always a good thing), and a unique gaming experience. The key will be whether they can offer a good number of compelling games at launch, and whether developers will be creative enough to use the system in unique and interesting ways. I'm not holding my breath for a ton of unique games, but I do think there will be plenty of them. Plus, the ports.

Pachter has his head up his ass, again.

I love how he claims publishers demanded the Pro controller, even though he has no basis other than his usually wrong opinion. Pachter doesn't seem to understand that the Pro controller is the same thing as the touchscreen controller, but without the screen, microphone, camera, gyros, etc. So it's not like you can't play Call of Duty with it.

He's an idiot. He was saying much of the same thing when the Wii came out (notice how he says "They got lucky with the Wii"). He was wrong then, and he's wrong now.

I actually don't know where he got this crazy idea that Activison would pressure Nintendo, especially when we got a report a few weeks ago from Treyarch that stated that the GamePad could very well advance the Call of Duty series. Plus considering the fact that the Wii also had its own Pro controller again just shows Pachter's ignorance.

I wasn't aware of that, but it's nice to know.

In my opinion, the big benefit of the Pro Controller is the fact that it allows a standard controller setup for multiplayer gaming, since you really don't need the Pro Controller for single-player gaming. Maybe there are a few people that would prefer a Pro Controller for single-player, but I wouldn't mind the tablet controller, especially when it can display the game on the controller's screen. The thought of that feature makes me VERY happy. :)

True. I would assume that in any given game, whether it uses the screen or not, the Pro controller's battery should last longer.

I would love to have both because in case there is a game I love that doesn't utilize the screen well, or I just don't care for how the game uses it, I can switch the Pro controller and give my GamePad a rest :D

Why are we listening to a "security analyst" is my biggest question here. Give me someone from a developing studio with a decent history in video gaming. If this guy has some hidden past then that should be mentioned in this article. Doesn't seem to deem an article from face value.

Too harsh. Aren't most of Nintendo's best selling games developed in-house? I am sure those games will find ways to use the Wii U's controller. As for the Pro controller, if it allow games like CoD to finally happen on a Nintendo console, why not? I would hope for further innovation like the Wii was, but MS is now leading the charge for motion capture/control. I guess Nintendo wasn't able to come up with anything better than the controller with screen this time...

I am worried that the Wii U is becoming too similar to the Xbox and PS. History has shown that the global console market can only comfortably support two major competitors that are substantially similar, which the Wii has largely avoided by being so different. Maybe the prediction that one of the major consoles will soon leave the market is true. If Nintendo begin to compete in the realm of AAA FPS and action adventure games, provided it can and that the circumstance surrounding its decision to compete is sufficiently dire, perhaps either Sony or Nintendo will leave the playfield soon.

Or perhaps not, and Mr. Pachter's insinuation that Nintendo is active courting major developers on the other two consoles is large unfounded.

I thought that was funny... until I realized it was from 2010, and then I thought it was REALLY funny.

Gamespot seems to have jumped on the Nintendo hatewagon. The thing is, it seems like the more that people slag off Nintendo for ideas that haven't even been brought to market yet, the more Nintendo fans react by buying them up in massive quantities when they eventually do.

I know people will think that I'm a Nintendo fanboy because of the tone of my comment, but the fact is that I'm simply interested by the possibilities that the Wii U brings to the table, much like I was interested by the possibilities of the Wii. Don't get me wrong, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are great consoles, but playing the same kind of games over and over again really makes me feel like "been there, done that."

I think that Pachter nailed it. As an owner of a Wii that hasn't been powered on in over a year, my main response to WiiU is 'I will not be sucked in again'. It's much harder to predict fads than it is to predict lasting trends. His original view of the Wii may look like a major blunder financially, in the end he was right, the fad passed, and the company could be bankrupt soon. "A solution in search of a problem" sums up the console, for me

@jakesnakeel The system sold like hotcakes for a standard console generations. Did it stop selling? Yes. So did the PS2, but nobody said that 'fad' passed because there weren't enough bitter angry fanboys to call it a fad in the first place. It's wasn't a fad and it didn't pass; it dominated a console generation and when Kinect forced Nintendo to move on they did. People seem to forget Nintendo never came out championing a 10 year life cycle for the Wii like MS and Sony did this gen. The Wii exceeded all expectations for as long as Nintendo expected it to and in typical timing it's predecessor is ready to replace it.And contrary to popular blowing out of proportions, Nintendo is in no danger of bankruptcy after posting a whopping one significant loss in a row. All that talk is merely stirred up by the gaming media and psuedo hardcore gamers with a hate hard-on for Nintendo. It's little more than a haters wet dream at this point. The Wii U could bomb and Nintendo will still be around, hate to burst your bubble.

@EarthViper It's not about hate, Earthviper. This is all just about speculation from people who have gaming as a hobby and enjoy following the industry. Like everyone, we are just following the news and thinking about how it affects us personally and guessing how it will affect companies that we follow. I have no hate for Nintendo at all.

@jakesnakeel Fair enough, but an awful lot of people do. Pachter's history is one that reeks of little more than professional troll and the fact that a Pachter article can rile up tons of hits and comments on any given slow news day smells bad from where I'm sitting. I'm by no means sold on the Wii U, I think Nintendo has their work cut out for them in more ways than one but Pachter makes a living regurgitated the kind of half truths and misinformation that cause such widespread ignorance and deserves no applause.

As much as I dislike Pachter, I kind of agree, kind of. I think it will still sell well. Nintendo is banking on the same sort of quirky image and feel that made Wii successful to the casual crowd. If they are smart, they will price it as cheap as they can out the gate.

But for me...I am even more skeptical this go around than I was when the Wii was first announced. Mainly for the reason I didn't like the DS. I never found the second screen so dramatically useful as to revolutionize my experience. And every time I had to use the touch screen while in the middle of game play, I was highly...highly annoyed.

And Patcher still gets press?

I think the Wii U will do well for a few reasons:

(1) Lower dev costs than their copetition. Despite what PUBLISHERS say, many devs are extremely wearly of sky-rocketing dev costs. Hell, David Jaffe and John Carmack have been quite public about it.

(2) Sony and Microsoft have already leaked info regarding no backward compatibility AND blocking used games on their next hardware. This alone has assured Nintendo the #1 spot. The Wii U has backward compatibility (Wii library and VC) and no mention of used game blocking.

(3) Many 3rd party AAA titles are getting Wii U ports with exclusive features at launch. Assassin's Creed Revelations, Batman Arkum City... So core gamers will be serviced nicely.

And the remark about Activision strong-arming Nintendo into creating a conventional controller for FPSes? Horse shit. The Wii U Pro Controller is a new iteration of the Wii's Classic Controller...which has been around since 2006. So Activision needs to stop adding inches to their little man.

Nintendo haters are only joining the jamboree because they've thrown buckets of money at Sony and M$ and now they're about to get shitted when the 8th gen rolls around. s if the 7th gen's dlc rackets, $60 games, forced online for multiplayer and half-assed bc wasn't shitting on them enough.

No hate on Activison, they didn't do anything wrong in this article. A few weeks ago Treyarch Studios reported that they felt like the GamePad could advance the Call of Duty franchise so if the studio that makes the Call of Duty games said this, then why would the company pressure Nintendo into making a Pro controller? I honestly don't know where Pachter got this farce from.

I don't believe blocking used games will be implemented. I can imagine forgoing backwards compatibility, because as much as people claim they want it, most people don't use it that much (and they usually already own an old console that still works).

"The Wii U Pro Controller is a new iteration of the Wii's Classic Controller."

Not only that, but the tablet controller has everything that the Pro controller has... but more. So to act like the Pro controller is necessary for games like Call of Duty is absurd.

People are already dogging the Wii U for a lack of power, when they apparently don't realize that the next Xbox and PS aren't going to have a whole lot more power than the Wii U has. This isn't the days of 300,000 gouraud-shaded polygons per second versus 600,000 texture-mapped bilinear-filtered polygons. We've got all the polygons we need, along with filtering and even anti-aliasing. The power differences, even if they are fairly large, aren't going to be graphically obvious.

John Carmack was making this point when he was talking about the 3D HMD thing.

Yes, Pachter clearly KNOWS Activision forced Nintendo on the Wii U Pro controller, yet he said "Activision has never said anything to him". Did it ever cross Pachter's mind that Nintendo made the Wii U Pro controller in case some games don't work with an untraditional controller, like the Wii and how it had games like that (prime examples, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Goldeneye, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Sonic Unleashed/Colors)?

In the words of Krillin/Kuririn (Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 1): Oh, man. Could he BE a bigger idiot?

The Wii wasn't lucky. It captured a new segment of the market that wasnt traditionally into gaming. However, I dont know if the Wii U will be able to create that same kind of enthusiasm. The wii was popular because it was something new. The Wii U won't have that same kind of novelty, so it may be tougher for them to be as successful. But that's the same story with any product.

The Wii wasn't luck. I honestly think Nintendo utilized a control scheme that was previously untapped and it resonated with a large group of people. I wasn't one of those people and with the Wii-U that won't change. The idea of motion control is cool but I'd rather have it as an option rather than be forced. I also don't have a desire to use a tablet of any kind. I hate touchscreens, it feels gimmicky and unreliable. The pro controller design is a rip-off from the Xbox 360 controller which I can't stand either however I'd much rather use that than the touch screen. I hope the pro controller is an available option for use in many of Nintendo's games and not limited to just third party hardcore games because it was pretty annoying finding out that the Wii had a classic controller and GC controller support but wasn't available an option for every game.

Nintendo didn't "get lucky" with the original Wii. They tapped a market that hadn't been tapped before by using a different, more active type of controller. The new controller meant that they weren't competing directly with the 360 and PS3 and it brought in a boatload of "new to consoles" casual gamers, adults and even elderly people. Their player base went beyond the traditional gamer and they made bajillions of dollars. Good on them. It is true that their gamble might not have worked but that is called taking a risk, not getting lucky.

That said, I think the Wii U is going away from the player base that made the Wii so successful. Casual gamers and the older generation won't be attracted to it like they were to the Wii and the tablet controller doesn't instinctively distinguish itself from any other tablet device out there. I think they are reducing their potential market and worst of all, they are going to be competing directly with MS and Sony with their Windows 8 to Xbox and Vita to PS3 functionality that is already in place. They're starting this new generation on par with MS and Sony which is a bad place to be when your hardware is so inferior...

The Wii U is essentially offering two things with the tablet controller: more screen real estate and the ability in local multiplayer to restrict some information to one player. What really groundbreaking things does that offer?

Wii U will not fail. People are limited in thinking that Nintendo is trying to fit into what Microsoft and Sony are doing. Nintendo is doing it's own thing, and has so since the launch of the original Wii. When Nintendo starts marketing this thing, it'll appeal to everyone they're trying to target. The only skeptical people are the hard cores on PS3 and Xbox. Business wise, Nintendo does not want to fail, so they will make sure they're successful, weather that includes the hardcore or not.

The question here is not if they'll fail business wise, unless your an investor, the question is, will Nintendo fail us? The fans, or other video game enthusiasts.

Business wise, Nintendo does not want to fail, so they will make sure they're successful, weather that includes the hardcore or not.The question here is not if they'll fail business wise, unless your an investor, the question is, will Nintendo fail us? The fans, or other video game enthusiasts.

Well, now we can be sure WiiU will be a success. Patcher is better in being faulty than any famous prophets of the past at being right. At least one thing he is totally dependable in :-)

I have a lot of faith in the WiiU. I think that it has a lot of potential and it is effectively bringing back the idea of multiplayer gaming. I have been looking for many games that I can play socially, and as always nintendo has found a way for me to do that. It's not promising too much, and it's not giving out too little. The console is just right for casual as well as pro gamers.
