Wii system sales cross 100 million units

Milestone for aging console achieved during April-June quarter where system sold 500,000 more units than successor the Wii U.

Nintendo's Wii console, released in November 2006, has crossed 100 million units in global life-to-date sales. The milestone was achieved during Nintendo's April-June quarter.

No Caption Provided

To date, lifetime sales for the system stand at 100.04 million units. The Wii is now Nintendo's third gaming machine to have sold over 100 million units, joining the DS (153.93 million) and the Game Boy (118.69 million).

More than 872 million games for the console have been sold to date, with Mario Kart Wii the top non-bundled game at 34.26 million copies sold since launch.

By comparison, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has sold 78.2 million systems to date, while the PlayStation 3 is believed to have sold around 77 million units worldwide since launch.

Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, has not yet been the runaway success that the original Wii was. As revealed today in an earnings report, the system sold only 160,000 units during the April-June quarter, boosting lifetime sales to 3.61 million consoles. The original Wii outsold the Wii U in the quarter by 500,000 units.

14.44 million Wii U games have been sold thus far. New Super Mario Bros. U is the system's top non-bundled game, moving 2.15 million units to date.

Nintendo plans to sell 9 million Wii U units before March 2014. The company is hoping to spur console sales by releasing numerous first-party titles in the coming months, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, and Wii Fit U.

@DrRockso87 The Wii is capable of running games spanning from 2001 (the gamecube release) to 2012 (when the Wii U took over as Nintendo's developing console). Thats 11 years worth of gaming you can access for a much smaller cost then up to date systems. Not everyone can afford or wants to stay current with gaming because its expensive (I still feel the Wii U is an investment not a purchase atm).

Not surprised. Cheap way to play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid is always good for business.

@northArrow I doubt Nintendo will ever again get these sales figures with consoles excluding handhelds. But I doubt Wii U flops, the biggest games aren't even out yet for the system, which was really stupid move from them, they should've had something big at launch.

@Stebsis I'm hoping they are getting great Dev's in their pockets to pull out later and really take off.

@northArrow I agree, but I also doubt sales this gen will be as high for any of the big 3.

@servb0ts @yavix @northArrow With all the PS3 and 360 sales I've seen recently (I work in retail) pretty much everyone has has or will have a backlog. People want to adopt the latest tech, but everyone won't be able to.

@yavix I disagree. Pre-orders for both the PS4 and Xbone are constantly selling out as soon as they become available again. More so for the PS4.

But we will see.

@Mayleene Of course they are different, but they're usually good indicators of how many will sell.

If someone doesn't pick theirs up some Joe will probably just show up on launch day and nab himself their copy.

@HowlPendragon Pre-orders and purchases are actually two different numbers, didn't you know?

I even pre-ordered both but will not buy both. May even not buy either.

@HowlPendragon Pre orders are just that, pre orders. Some will be cancelled, some of the $5 down ones will be ignored. Until we get the first three months sales report I'm not believing anything. A lot can happen between now and launch day.

@thetravman @HowlPendragon

I don't think we can be under any illusions that their just won't be games for the PS4/Xbone however. Both will launch with a good mix of exclusives and third parties.

@HowlPendragon They said the same thing for the Wii U and it did sell very well during the holidays. It's just what happened afterwards...no games.

@HowlPendragon The media is hyping it up a lot but without any official figures on pre-orders, what can we trust to be accurate?

@xolivierx Simple math really $129.99 vs $349.99. Plus the Wii has a larger library of games.

The Wii is the only Nintendo console to go over 100 mil, I thought NES and SNES were also up there but I could be wrong.

@jrcast84 The NES sold over 61 million copies in its time, while the SNES sold over 49 million. Not even the N64 or GameCube even come close to these sales, including the Wii.

@mastermetal777 @jrcast84 Wow I didnt know the WII was more popular than NES or SNES. But I guess it makes sense as they were catering to a bigger audience.

I wonder if there was a similar article about PS3 sales tanking, while the PS2 continued to dominate?

@Haeravon There actually was. When GAMESPOT did weekly numbers reporting, the PS2 outsold PS3 many weeks. But for some reason GAMESPOT quit reporting the weekly numbers about a year ago or so after the VITA came out with dismal numbers. They even did a top 10 game selling list with numbers as well.

Oh well, say what you want, WIIU still outselling VITA.

First they have to sell their current stock of 100 million units.
