Wii system sales cross 100 million units

Milestone for aging console achieved during April-June quarter where system sold 500,000 more units than successor the Wii U.

Nintendo's Wii console, released in November 2006, has crossed 100 million units in global life-to-date sales. The milestone was achieved during Nintendo's April-June quarter.

No Caption Provided

To date, lifetime sales for the system stand at 100.04 million units. The Wii is now Nintendo's third gaming machine to have sold over 100 million units, joining the DS (153.93 million) and the Game Boy (118.69 million).

More than 872 million games for the console have been sold to date, with Mario Kart Wii the top non-bundled game at 34.26 million copies sold since launch.

By comparison, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has sold 78.2 million systems to date, while the PlayStation 3 is believed to have sold around 77 million units worldwide since launch.

Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, has not yet been the runaway success that the original Wii was. As revealed today in an earnings report, the system sold only 160,000 units during the April-June quarter, boosting lifetime sales to 3.61 million consoles. The original Wii outsold the Wii U in the quarter by 500,000 units.

14.44 million Wii U games have been sold thus far. New Super Mario Bros. U is the system's top non-bundled game, moving 2.15 million units to date.

Nintendo plans to sell 9 million Wii U units before March 2014. The company is hoping to spur console sales by releasing numerous first-party titles in the coming months, including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, and Wii Fit U.

That tablet controller was a bad idea. Nintendo should've just upgraded the original Wii's specs and made the sensor more accurate. I don't know what they were thinking. I imagine someone at Nintendo HQ said something along the lines, "Well, tablets are hot right now, why not implement that into our new console?" Horrible decision.

Another problem is that some people think that the Wii U is a Wii with a fancier controller. I'm not kidding.

@jsmoke03 I'm a PC-only gamer, but I like Nintendo anyway and it's always fun to point out to Xbox 360/PS3 fanboys that the Wii has sold much more than their favored console. This is yet another thing to pester them about, muahahahaha!!! I highly doubt that any of the other consoles (Xbox One/PS4 included) will get to 100 million units, but we'll see about the next-gen.

100 is the key number here. That's how many years you'll still be seeing these things crop up in garage sales :P

At least the Wii had some really classic titles though. The Wii U has a long way to go to reach the potential of what some of the titles that appeared on the Wii acheived.

With the Wii the knew how to program for those graphics etc. With the Wii U its like they are just learning this HD thing and how to do it effectively with the hardware they have.. By that point if the Wii had gong with Hd graphics, the Wii U would not have been in this software shortage...

Remember when they transitioned from the Super Nes to N64.. Its like the leap in tech through them a curve ball and they had to learn all these new techniques.

Because they betted against Hd TV getting so popular, so quickly.. Now its catching up

@SIDEFX1 Maybe you are a fan of Mario, or the Zelda series... Maybe you have small kids that don't care about top tier graphics.... maybe you're an infrequent gamer that just wanted something less expensive to play at social game nights. Basically... because there is a market for Wii users. Not everyone is in need of a Benz, plenty of people are ok with a Civic. Its not that complicated. I hope this helps.

I'm going to say good for Nintendo on this milestone, but the fad has done what fads do and faded away. They focused heavily on the not so traditional gamer like grand dad, mom, and others who didn't play games and don't play games on a regular basis. They lured them in with the Wii remote which is far less intimidating then a PS3 or 360 controller.

Problem is, these were not serious gamers and they have gotten over the Wii "craze" and could care less about the Wii U. If I was wrong on that point, please show me via the sales how I'm wrong because 3.61 million sales isn't going to change my opinion.

The regular hardcore gaming community is busy saving their money for the soon to be released PS4 and Xbox One and they argue amongst themselves as if the Wii U doesn't even exist. That can't be a good thing but again, if I'm wrong show me via the sales. Let's see them climb their way out of what many consider to be a almost guaranteed 3rd place and distant one at that.

@bigmikeOK With the Wii, Nintendo chose to not compete directly with the more hardcore and graphics heavy competition found in Xbox and Playstation. They're still on the same track with the WiiU, so they're not targeting the same audience and you can't therefore say that most people choose whether to buy a PS4, Xbox One or WiiU. I think it's more like people either buy just a WiiU or decide to buy a WiiU and then deciding between the PS4 and Xbox One. Nintendo developed games sell Nintendo consoles, it's always been like that and when more Nintendo games come, people will buy more of their consoles.

@Hurvl @bigmikeOK The problem is they are not buying the Wii U. A year jump and only 3.61 million systems sold is not a good sign regardless of their target audience. Who is their target audience because they seem to send mixed messages. If it's truly the entire family then they have a problem because a lack of 3rd party support keeps the family waiting.

Meanwhile, Sony and MS will be releasing systems with all ages in mind probably to a greater degree then they did with the PS3 and 360. The idea that we will get people to buy our system when we release more games without 3rd party support is a POOR business model.

They have pulled rabbits out of their hat a couple of times before but that's because they weren't taking seriously by the competition. This time around, regardless of what Sony and MS have stated publicly, they are not going to allow a repeat of the perceived fluke that was the Wii. The Wii U is in serious trouble and I'm sure even Nintendo realizes that.

@dre256x @bigmikeOK My point is where are the gamers? Where are the sales? If I'm wrong, where are they? 3.61 million systems with a YEAR jump over the competition. Guess what? The clock is ticking. November may seem like a long ways from now. IT'S NOT. Even though the launch dates haven't been announced we can be sure that those systems will be out in time for Black Friday.

Fact is, Sony and MS will be FLOODING the airwaves, billboards, and everything in between the closer we get to the launch of these systems. That should begin a minimum of 30 days prior to the launch but in all likelihood it will begin before then. People won't even NOTICE the Wii U when this happens as the hype machine for those systems kicks into overdrive with us having had to wait 7 years for this moment.

Wii U has about a good 40-50 days left before they run out of time to make an impression. My final statement is what I began with....where....are.....the sales?

Crazy that the Wii is outselling the Wii U. One would figure that every person that was going to own a Wii would have purchased it by now.

Nintendo sells a lot of bigmacs....it still does not mean it's good or quality food...it only means it's accessible and very cheap, which is the Wii

@Cryio 1. PS2 150 Million+

2. PS1 103-104 Million.

3. Wii 100 Million

Its sad such a bad system might surpass the amazing PS1 someday. :(

@hatieshorrer @Leeric420 @robertico7 Apples and Oranges. The PS3 was very overpriced, with cheaper competitors already established when it launched, but was still desirable. Once they knocked the cost down, it started picking up steam almost immediately.

The Wii U is already priced lower than the competition, which haven't even come out yet, but no one wants the thing. Everyone I know who owns one now only talks about how disappointing it is. Nintendo sold out the avid gamer crowd during the last generation, and have also lost their "blue ocean" casuals to the phone/tablet craze. All they have left are their ultra-hardcore fans, and they already bought a Wii U at the launch.

I don't expect a big upswing in demand once the Nintendo games finally come out. The casuals aren't coming back. The avid gamers have a bad taste in their mouth from the Wii, and plenty of options on the PS4/X1. And third-party developers are doing the same thing that they did on the Wii: Ignoring it, because the technology gap is too large to be worth their time.

Wii U was DOA.

So the Wii's outselling the Wii U......dang Nintendo, that's just pathetic marketing, especially since the Wii U can do everything plus more than the original Wii.

Shows you how impressive the PS2 sales were ending with over 154m. Where the Ps3 is at is pretty impressive as well considering how it started. Wii owes much success to the Ps3s early debacle.

@gamebuyer22 No...just...no. Wii owes much success to Motion Controls, so much so that the PS3 & Xbox had to imitate it.

@grasshopper6 Wii is available in lots of countries where there's no Wii U availability. Also, Wii is cheaper and more recognized. And there's the GameCube compatibility aspect - that may influence a few people. So, there are reasons for someone to buy a Wii instead of it's successor.

@wgerardi Metacritic lists 14 Wii games with a metascore of 90 or higher. It also lists over 100 games with a metascore of 80 or higher. That's certainly a bit more the "only 5 good games".
