Why Sony Is Skipping E3 2021

Sony hasn't attended an E3 since 2018, but if you're wondering why the PlayStation manufacturer isn't a part of the biggest gaming event of the year, we have answers.

E3 is arguably the most important gaming event of the year, and in years past, Sony was one of the biggest participants with its enormous stage shows. Since it's just around the corner, that's led many people to wonder if Sony is going to attend the event in 2021. That is not the case: The PS5 manufacturer is skipping E3 for the third year in a row, after eschewing 2019 and 2020.

While we can only really speculate why Sony continues to skip one of the biggest industry events on the calendar, industry insiders and journalists have noted the decreasing cultural cachet of E3 for years now. Back in 2018, the company said that it was skipping E3 because it was looking for other "inventive opportunities" to connect with its own community.

Now Playing: E3 2021 Hype, Speculation, What We Want To See | GameSpot After Dark

Attending and putting on massive events is quite expensive at the scale that is expected of platform-holders like Sony, and the ubiquity of social media platforms like Twitch and YouTube allows the company to reach its customers directly without the massive investment of an E3 showing. Plus, even mega-companies like Sony have limited control over big industry events like E3, while they have complete control if they host their own showcase. (Then again, when it comes to an all-digital event, such distinctions are practically meaningless to fans.)

It's also worth noting that while Sony was the first platform-holder to skip E3 back in 2019, it's far from the first major publisher to do so. For example, EA has often hosted E3-style showcases held in physical proximity to the official event. The difference for EA is largely semantics, at least as far as fans are concerned, as new games are still announced in a large presentation.

Still, while Sony may not be attending the all-virtual event this year, the company will certainly unveil some major announcements this summer. Regardless of whether or not a company is formally a part of E3, players can be sure that it will be competing for the same splashy headlines as official attendees. For example, Sony recently held a State of Play event that revealed footage of Horizon Forbidden West, the highly-anticipated sequel to the open-world classic Horizon Zero Dawn. We still don't have a release date on Forbidden West, if you were wondering. For more on E3 2021, check out our official schedule and list of participants, as well as our guide to the games and announcements we really want to see this year.

the guy who wrote this was the biggest sony fanboy i have ever seen. he tried very hard not to mention micro/bethesda conference at e3 LOL it is clear they can not go face to face with 3 hours long micro/bethesda exclusive games show LOL.

so it is not about money . these event are now all digital and it is much cheaper to produce a video with guy just talking and showing some trailers.

@rzagtx: There's so much more to being at the event. All the booths, signage, set-ups and people to run all that adds up pretty quick. Your post is very ironic, don't be a fanboy man.

It's very easy to figure it out.

The organizers at E3 must charge a SH*T TON of money and they can have the same impact with a free Livestream on youtube.

Once E3 goes back to being an in person, gamers can get their hand on the new stuff type deal, then maybe, it makes sense to return. And that's a BIIIIG maybe.

Sony does not go to E3 anymore because they save a lot of money by skipping it and just posting all their conferences, special events and State of Play on PlayStation Youtube channel.

@ButDuuude: At least they invest that money into awesome AAA’s. Xbox just release articles in response and somehow, it’s fans are over the moon by that. And if they don’t release any new games, Reddit can’t criticise.

Its really NBD if they don't want to be there. And the only reason they should at least hold their own event is because its very exciting and the fans really love it....just like they love E3. I am psyched for E3 as I am every year. Can't wait to see what Microsoft's studios are cooking up.

But I will say that as awesome as Sony's exclusives are, their E3 presentations have been very lackluster. Flute solos, dancing, venue changes mid presentation, etc...

E3 is pure crap corrupted of a convention, any brand with a bare minimum of common sense should skip E3 for their own event, or not consider at all that it exists. It really is bad image for companies that attend there, and its' just because the lies, the corruption, the cinematic fest it has become. It's the format they have adopted for the last 8 years, or even more, disgusting.

@peptide101: The thought and the premise isn't what is horrid. The showings, the execution, and the boring layouts have been doo-doo. There used to be a time when E3 was amazing. The gaming world doesn't wait for this time of year to show their best upcoming titles any longer. Most of the time they hold their own showings to give fans what they want without a ton of fluff. I wonder if E3 would be better if they went back to the old format where journalist were the only ones allowed. Take the fans out of it.

Not the biggest fan of state of play events. I preferred it when Sony was at E3. The God of War trailer a couple of years ago was so good.

“Classic?” Classic. We’re using that to describe a game from four years ago. This seems like a major abuse of the word.

Here are the TL'DR reasons why Sony dropped out from E3: it's too expensive to attend, the ESA bungled big time when they let in the general public which made conducting industry bidness much harder, and Sony sees no value paying to be in an event they cannot control and where they must share the spotlight with Microsoft and Nintendo.

The real reason why Sony is skipping E3 is because they don't want to face the elephant in the room which is their trainwreck launch of the PS5 and why it's still a poopshow to buy a PS5.

You're welcome.

The nice thing about these events going digital is not having to waste time sifting through interview videos to find gameplay videos. Also watching trailers and demos without a carnival of background noise. Either way, we are all still doing the same thing weve been doing since we were teens.. watching game reveal trailers from our couches. Only way I can understand someone being upset of the decline is if they actually went to E3 each year, cause yeah thats prob fun as hell.

E3's on its last legs for a while now. It's just unnecessary when it can be done online with less hassle.

I just don't think they have much to show at E3, returnal just came out with ratchet and clank not to far away. Horizon still far always too. Sony tend to over spend at E3 with live entertainment. Which people at the time said the didn't have much of a good time. 2018 sony E3 wasn't that good for people who was watching

Hasn't Nintendo done this for awhile too, opting to do a Nintendo direct instead?

Chances are Sony will do a State of Play around the same time so, as a fan, it's basically all the same.

@sparent180: This.

That and the PSN feed on YouTube is WAY more informative than anything else. It routinely announces games I've never heard of. Dev specific feeds are way more useful than conventions. Even the biggest new sites routinely fail to cover all of the games shown at these shows, opting to cover only the biggest games.

As far as I'm concerned, big conventions like this are outdated. I routinely discover interesting games these days just by checking dev news feeds and browsing the release schedule on GameFAQs and then referencing a YouTube video.

Remember the Sony glorious days when they used to have that majestic orchestra playing some of the most iconic game soundtracks on stage?

It has been so long since, that even if they would bring back the homeless flute guy at the beach bum shack from a few years back it would be better than their stale "State of Play" webisodes...lol

I "get" why Sony is deciding to skip out on yet another E3 event (seems like they won't be coming back any time soon.) and yes I understand why when you factor in things like the costs and expenses involved in such an endeavor but let's be honest...

Their State of play events that they have sprinkled throughout the years do little in the way to generate the same level of excitement as the week of E3. Like, not even close.

I have a feeling Sony will look back on these missed opportunities later down the road and say "What were we thinking?" All of this just to save a little bit of money (in the grand scheme of things.) in the short term.

The only one who is going to benefit from E3 this year is Microsoft and the way things have been going as of late I wouldn't be surprised if E3 helps propel Microsoft into striking range of Sony more than they have been in years; especially when you factor in some of their more recent big name acquisitions.

Once again, I understand why Sony is doing what they are doing being that satiated wolf on top of that mountain but I have a feeling this may come back to bite them in the long run as a ravenous wolf (Microsoft.) is climbing up that mountain more and more each day.

@videogameninja: I don't see the difference between Sony doing an E3 press conference or them putting out a State of Play. Their June State of Play last year accomplished the same goal by showing off upcoming titles, some that released last year and some that are still to come.

As a fan it's all the same to me. Call it an E3 Conference, State of Play, Nintendo Direct, whatever. If it's an hour-hour and a half focused on new games I can't complain.

@sparent180: I agree. And there is proof. If you look at game revenues for the years since 2018 - 2020 Sony has doubled the next closest in line (Nintendo).

Especially last year without an E3 and them coming into their own State of Play - it’s safe to assume that only the press, cosplayers, streamers and t-shirt sellers (kinda parasites that need them to make a living) really think it’s a missed opportunity.

@bdrtfm: And it's unlikely they'll be completely silent during E3 as well. Chances are they'll do a State of Play around the same time so what's the difference really other than semantics.

Pretty sure Nintendo's been doing the same thing for awhile now too. No official Nintendo E3 conference but they do a Nintendo Direct around the same time as E3 every year.

As gamers/fans it really has no effect on us.
