Why Sony Is Skipping E3 2021

Sony hasn't attended an E3 since 2018, but if you're wondering why the PlayStation manufacturer isn't a part of the biggest gaming event of the year, we have answers.

E3 is arguably the most important gaming event of the year, and in years past, Sony was one of the biggest participants with its enormous stage shows. Since it's just around the corner, that's led many people to wonder if Sony is going to attend the event in 2021. That is not the case: The PS5 manufacturer is skipping E3 for the third year in a row, after eschewing 2019 and 2020.

While we can only really speculate why Sony continues to skip one of the biggest industry events on the calendar, industry insiders and journalists have noted the decreasing cultural cachet of E3 for years now. Back in 2018, the company said that it was skipping E3 because it was looking for other "inventive opportunities" to connect with its own community.

Now Playing: E3 2021 Hype, Speculation, What We Want To See | GameSpot After Dark

Attending and putting on massive events is quite expensive at the scale that is expected of platform-holders like Sony, and the ubiquity of social media platforms like Twitch and YouTube allows the company to reach its customers directly without the massive investment of an E3 showing. Plus, even mega-companies like Sony have limited control over big industry events like E3, while they have complete control if they host their own showcase. (Then again, when it comes to an all-digital event, such distinctions are practically meaningless to fans.)

It's also worth noting that while Sony was the first platform-holder to skip E3 back in 2019, it's far from the first major publisher to do so. For example, EA has often hosted E3-style showcases held in physical proximity to the official event. The difference for EA is largely semantics, at least as far as fans are concerned, as new games are still announced in a large presentation.

Still, while Sony may not be attending the all-virtual event this year, the company will certainly unveil some major announcements this summer. Regardless of whether or not a company is formally a part of E3, players can be sure that it will be competing for the same splashy headlines as official attendees. For example, Sony recently held a State of Play event that revealed footage of Horizon Forbidden West, the highly-anticipated sequel to the open-world classic Horizon Zero Dawn. We still don't have a release date on Forbidden West, if you were wondering. For more on E3 2021, check out our official schedule and list of participants, as well as our guide to the games and announcements we really want to see this year.

E3 is a dinosaur from a bygone era. There is no more print media, there is no longer any hurdles reaching buyers, ( even know brick and mortar are themselves becoming dinosaurs) there is no barriers between developers and customers. EVERYTHING that E3 was created for NO LONGER EXIST.

E3 was a tool for getting your game out and seen by media, buyers, and customers. Before the internet trade shows like E3 were needed, in 2021 E3 is no longer needed by anyone.

@totallytc: There absolutely is still utility in a single event in which the industry showcases its products to consumers. People expect the event, they make time for the event, they watch the event, they hype the product.

I mean showcases aren't unique to gaming. They exist in nearly every industry.

@chriss_m: I agree, it is the time when most of us have an open eye & ear, best time to get the most out of your advertisement. Other times during the year we may too busy & preoccupied!

E3 is needed now more than ever, in any shape or form! Especially seen what minced showings looked like last year!

Sony doesn't need E3. E3 used to be really exciting before youtube and streaming. I remember reading Gamepro, EGM, Nintendo Power about E3 and how exciting it was. Now, direct streaming is the way of big reveals. I won't be surprised if E3 gets cancelled in the future with all the major players having direct feeds.

Sony only does things on there own. They fought against the VHS standard with BetaMax. The fought (and won) against HD DVD with Blu-Ray (by bulling the industry with their media licenses). They are fighting against Dolby Atmos with 3D audio. They built the PS around exclusives that can't be played on other hardware. They are the only game maker to not sell digital games on other stores, and there are many other examples, memory sticks, Mini-disk, etc.

Sony is a bully company that refuses to work with the industry and this has been the case for decades. Why would you ever expect them to join an event along side its competitors?! No way.

@Wasabi-G: Love for Xbox must be sustained with media hype, promises of what’s to come and American brand loyalty simply for it’s own survival but this hatred against Sony’s high-quality creative expertise just screams fanatical obsession for the opposition. Still, I’m giving you a Like. I found this to be a very entertaining read.

How can it be the opposition when I own a PS5, 4 Pro, and 3? I just finished TLOU2 in 60fps this past weekend. I just don't like the way Sony does business especially lately. In fact I have stopped buying all digital games from them and go out of my way to only buy used physical copies so as to reduce their sales numbers.

@Wasabi-G: Sony lose money on every console but receive their majority income through your subscription, so you could cancel it, not get free AAA games every month on plus and genuinely take a step back from funding them with your own wallet. ‘Sup to you.

I call Xbox their home console opposition because they are... or better put: they should be. The competition is healthy for the industry and prevents monopolising companies getting lazy. For example, if they could figure out a model which sustained their income without the need for creative input and expensive, risky new AAAA IP’s, I’m sure they would go down that route. But Sony are in the business of game development and that’s what they’re praised for. Personally, I go where the games are at and like any normal gamer, new amazing titles are what dictate my choice of console.

@Wasabi-G: beta max. Wow. Haven't heard that one in a while. I've actually never seen one.

I thought they won with bluray by simply putting a bluray player in their PS3s.

They're using proprietary tech right now, and once it's available for speakers we can assess how good it is. Since Sony actually makes speakers and TVs and 4k players that work with Atmos, I don't buy what you're selling here.

All consoles have exclusives. Stop acting like gamepass isn't brand new, or like it's even proven itself yet. I wasn't aware that Nintendo sold its games digitally on other platforms (unless you're counting shitty mobile games). I shall have to download Mario Kart and Twilight Princess on my PS5 tonight. And remember Nintendo's love affair with cartridges? They remembered it so well they reignited it.

You are deluding yourself. It's a huge company with its share of corporate headaches, and so are its competitors

@id0ntkn0w7: Nintendo absolutely DOES sell digital games on Amazon, Best Buy, etc. Go look. Who brought up GamePass? I don't even understand the comment you made about it. I have a PS5, PS4 Pro, and PS3 by the way. I don't have an Xbox. If you have never seen a BetaMax then perhaps your not old enough to remember how exclusive focused and anti-consumer Sony has always been. I honestly credit Sony as being the first in the regard and Apple copied a ton of what they were doing. Apple is the same kind of company.

Sony has participated in E3 events for a long time, (they've only backed out a handful of times in 26 years). It's really only recently that they've decided not to have a presence at the show.

Because it is a USA trade show & they don't like the USA & don't want to give us any money. Same reason why in the Asian countries they won't support USA products such as the XB, cuz they don't give a flux!

Imagine the criticism if XB did not attend, Sony fanboys would have a field day instead they make every excuse under the sun for Sony!

@thecupidstunts: No full PS1-PS3 backwards compatibility, no full controller backwards/forwards compatibility, weaker hardware, & no show at E3!

We can play PS1-PS3 games on a XBsX, but we cannot on a PS5...how ironic!

Yea, they love us!

@just1mohr: TBF, Xbox could do with the showcase. Each and every year we hope to see an incredible gameplay trailer from them. When was the last time that happened? Sony have just released Horizon 2 footage and could drop some GOW:R gameplay whenever they want. If Sony are the one’s continuously rolling out the hits, and would like to not announce anything new (do they need to right now?), shouldn’t they skip the year for announcements like they did in 2019 and just let the games we already know about do the talking for them? It’s Microsoft who we’re all looking to for at least a couple big game announcements. Sony have the commercially attractive system sellers and MS need new one’s to help market themselves heavily again, like they did during the 360 days.

Why not allow MS the chance to have a positive summer over Sony? Sony still have gameplay trailers for GOW, Horizon, Stray etc. and that’s pretty obvious but could be overkill if they announced anything new anytime soon. Best to save all the new projects until next year, once MS finally got their ball rolling.

@bloodbornelore: Can't argue with XB not bringing it & it being a common theme year in & out! I have my expectations super low, as history has shown us that we should! Of course many of us have been waiting on the edge of our seats for years now, but the edge is worn out.

At the same token PS does not have many or very good online player exclusives. Would be nice if Sony can continue their single player & XB the multi & we all win.

@toonami4life: Yup & their big money & fan loyalty is not enough reason to play with the big boys? At the very least they can show up on a digital E3 for the loyal fans, it is the VERY least they can do!

They make more money now on selling their games on PC, enough excuses for Sony I say!

It's so strange to me, because Sony's presentations since backing out of E3 have been notoriously bad. In fact, I'd argue most of their success with the PS4 was due to showstopping E3 presentations and reveals.

@HAWK9600: Their E3 2015 presentations changed the way we viewed the future of gaming, that’s for sure. Even made Phil Spencer cry into a massive Master Chief statue in a Twitter response (which may have been intended as a joke). It was certainly a bold step forward, for any publisher, to reveal the plethora of titles they did. Nintendo also wowed everyone with BOTW gameplay. We entitled gamers like to take things for granted and we’re often vocally unappreciative of what we receive, but back in 2015, the games we had in 2017/2018 were the Future.

@HAWK9600: This is quite true unfortunately. I find myself skipping through most of the presentation because some of the games are just not that exciting. Someone just needs to look at these video presentations and look at how they can lift their game.

Nintendo is in the same boat. Nintendo Direct gives all the info of an E3 showcase but done quarterly as opposed to annually (it could be more than quarterly I don't keep track). They don't really need to do a showcase unless they are doing a console reveal...like a 4k Switch...

Not like we don't know whats going on with Sony....a whole lot of not much like the rest of the industry until they get back to work.

Same reason why they skipped 2019 for all game announcements. Same reason a small minority of people think Sony have made a terrible mistake yet again. Ask yourselves: what would the industry be like without competition? We ALL need to strive to help out Xbox during these difficult times. They’re simply unable to adequately finance any new IP properly, as we’ve seen with Grounded. Whilst Sony roll out the hits, and whilst Xbox refuse to be any better, it’s up to us as a whole to encourage Xbox in every way we can. Nobody’s going to be hurt by it except fanboys.

I remember the Gears 5 gameplay reveal having really awful character glitches when interacting with walls properly (like continuing to walk into them instead of pressing against them), so unless they have a pretty Forza, what can they show? Are Xbox even capable of releasing a mind-blowing trailer of something? The strongest likelihood is that it will just be another dull E3. Sony will still technically “win” the summer of trailers with their gameplay presentations of GOW and Horizon.

@thecupidstunts: Not with their management issues, hence their big budgets but evidently lower quality. Scalebound went waaaay over budget. They don’t know what they’re doing with their budgets, clearly. Look at the technical issues of EVERY single one of their new IP’s of the last 8 years. There’s clearly an issue with how they manage their creative projects and the resources they use.

@rahstar: Because as OTT and needlessly poetic this might sound, to be in the Xbox crowd is to continuously wait for salvation. The religion requires your faith, so the supposed deliverance that’s meant to happen doesn’t need a great gameplay trailer to prove anything. Xbox don’t need to showcase great games at E3 (they don’t anyway) they just need you to believe it’s going to happen eventually, like “next year”. When that year comes around, the Spring time articles will make you believe it’s the next year after that. In 2018, the One X was going to change everything and it doesn’t need exclusives when multiplatfomers can help market it. 2019 is going to be Xbox’s year as Sony foolishly take the year off from game announcements. Death Stranding won’t be out until at least 2021 anyway. Xbox’s 26 studios (before the Zenimax acquisition) are going to be so ready by 2020. Will Sony even have anything for launch? 2021 will see Xbox overtake Sony. 2022 will see Xbox start to dominate the generation, like Sony did last generation.

You see? It doesn’t require commercially attractive titles or substantial budgets for new IP’s. Xbox are making profit, they’re undeniably successful and it requires your faith to sustain it. If your hearts not in it, that won’t happen.
