Which PS4 Games Don't Work On PS5?

The PS5 can play nearly all PS4 games via backwards compatibility, but Sony has shared a list of games that only work on PS4.

The PS5 is backwards compatible with most PS4 games and can even offer a mixture of improved load times, enhanced visuals, and better frame rates. While Sony says the vast majority of PS4 games will be playable on the new system, a select few titles will not be compatible with the next-gen console, and we now know exactly which those are.

A support page on the official PlayStation website initially listed 10 games that would not be playable on PS5, but that number has dropped to eight games as of December 2020. The list includes some VR content, and it doesn't feature any enormous titles. The games you'll likely want to keep playing when you get your PS5 will still work. Joe's Diner fans are in for a rude awakening, though. We hate to be the ones to break this news, but you will have to keep your PS4 available in order to keep playing it. However, if a game is on the list, it could be removed later. Likewise, games could be added in the future if they are released for PS4 at a later date, though this is very unlikely.

Now Playing: Has PlayStation Done Enough? | Generation Next

It initially looked as if these 10 games would be the only ones that didn't work, but Ubisoft subsequently shared its own list with a handful of game that purportedly were incompatible. These are listed below, and include several VR games and entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Ubisoft has since removed a post listing them from its website; the games in question are listed below with an asterisk. Based on reports, these Ubisoft games do at least boot up, but it's possible you could encounter some issues as you play. You may want to wait for potential updates in order to get them to run more smoothly. Newer Ubisoft games will work more smoothly on PS5.

In our PS5 review, we noted that we found occasional glitches in non-Ubisoft games, such as a visual bug in Batman: Return to Arkham. Your mileage may vary, and it's possible some of these issues could be patched in the future. However, we don't suggest getting rid of your PS4 quite yet.

PS5-Incompatible PS4 Games

  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate*
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India*
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China*
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia*
  • Risk*
  • Star Trek Bridge Crew*
  • Werewolves Within*
  • Space Junkies*
  • Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma - Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe's Diner

All you need to do to play a backwards-compatible game on PS5 is put it into the disc drive, download it from PSN, or transfer it via external storage from PS4. Should there be a PS5 upgrade available, Sony also detailed that process. Even some PS4 games will see better performance via Game Boost without a PS5 upgrade.

Your PS Plus saves stored in the cloud will transfer from PS4 to PS5. This means that if you have a game you've only half-finished on PS4 and want to continue playing on PS5, you can install it on the new console, download your save data, and pick up right where you left off. This will be extremely useful for any games including via the PlayStation Plus collection that you may have played in the past, as the digital versions will be available right away on PS5. You must have a PS Plus subscription in order to use cloud saves. This differs from Xbox, which lets anyone with a free Xbox Live account make use of cloud saves.

You'll be able to keep using a DualShock 4 controller to play the PS4 games, though it won't work on PS5 games. PlayStation Move and PlayStation VR Aim controllers will be supported, as well. You'll want to keep your PS4's camera available, as well, as you'll need it to play these games. It appears the PS5's own camera will serve other purposes, possibly for enhancing the streaming experience.

Microsoft is also supporting the vast majority of Xbox One games on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with the exception of Kinect-only games. The same backward compatible original Xbox and Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One will be playable on the new hardware, as well. It doesn't appear more will be added.

PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition both released on November 12. Check out our guide on where to buy a PS5 for the latest information on how to secure an order.

Probably should have quoted these lines:

  • Although many PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles. In addition, some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles.
  • Before purchasing add-ons to play with your PS4 games on PS5 consoles, please try to boot and play your PS4 games on your PS5 console to see if you are happy with the play experience.

It's a worthwhile warning. Hopefully a little effort and time should iron these issues out. This is the catch with using a beast to play older titles, sometimes you get some hiccups.

@wahsobe:

No this is no excuse. Its typical of sony. They just CANNOT match Xbox with this and a whole other menagerie of features. And you know what? They never have.

Xbox since it’s inception has always done these things better. From the OG Xbox giving us the first true fast broadband online gaming right up to now with XseX/S, Gamepass and Xbox Cloud gaming (Xcloud).

I’ve had every playstation from ps2 onwards. They remind me of the Nintendo and Sega days of gaming. Old. Traditional.

Xbox have always seemed to push things forward or be on the forefront of things.

If sony are not able to leverage Microsoft’s Azure and deliver a game streaming library that can compete with Xbox Cloud Gaming (XCG), Luna and others then I see them going the way of Sega in the future. When consoles are no longer needed.

Xbox is killing it. Can’t wait.

@gamerbum: See, now you know why I had a caveat on my support the other day ;)

Until the PS5 comes out and we all get a chance to see what they've done and compare it to the Series X it hardly makes any sense to bash them.

Xbox is built from the PC environment as opposed to a console environment. It has always been both a blessing and a hinderance. Never knowing whether to bring the Console into the PC world or to fully envelop themselves into the console world.

The Xbox 360 was actually them creeping towards a console world but it still had enough PC influence and momentum to push it forward. The release candidate Xbox One was some kind of ugly bastard child of the future that really didn't know what it wanted to be. The work done over the generation defined what it could and should have been and that's where we start off with the Series X/S.

The Xbox X/S is in familiar ground now that it's leaning into its PC roots. The future isn't about being bound by the restraints of the console world and Microsoft has a leg up because of it. That doesn't mean that what Sony builds is poor or inferior. Microsoft leads in its ecosystem not it's performance. Yes even the handful of pixels the One X afforded over the PS4 Pro is hardly that much of a boon.

The PS5 looks to be a formidable machine and even if what people expect comes to be true the minor drop in framerate or pixels will hardly be a devastating win for Microsoft. Sony's not going anywhere. If these forums aren't enough proof for you that they've got a massive dedicated fanbase then you're not paying attention.

"Xbox have always seemed to push things forward or be on the forefront of things."

Being on the forefront is good and all but not to the point where no-one is up there with you. This and it's miscommunication is a large part of the reason why Microsoft bombed out the gate this generation. Now that we're heading into the next generation almost all of the elements that Microsoft were trying to incorporate are in there. This time it's implemented smarter and more consumer friendly.

But in all seriousness, I've literally never heard of anyone having problems nor seen any articles pop up anywhere about it. I remember the articles talking about Sony's warning and forecasting doom and gloom about the feature, but nothing came of it.

@Xylymphydyte: There was plenty of talk everywhere about poorer than expected performance and minor issues on titles. This mostly went away over the course of a couple years. This time around you can expect similar issues but to a more severe degree. Especially on in game event timings that may not have been set up expecting such drastic differences in Hard Drive (SSD) performance.

These are realistically fixable things and it's unlikely that devs won't eventually pop back in for a fix. It is however important to make note.

@wahsobe: Xbox just does a better job of applying back compatibility via emulation and enhancing them on newer consoles up to 4k resolution. They have been doing it for years including on the Xbox 360 which has BC for OG Xbox games and have pioneered techniques like the Heutchy Method on the Xbox One X to enhance them.

"And we're at the point now where Xbox One routinely outperforms the same games running on original hardware, something that was a design goal for the team since the project's inception: "Parity wasn't good enough. We actually wanted these 360 games to run better on Xbox One hardware because we knew we had headroom and we wanted to take advantage of it," points out Xbox Program Manager Kevin Gammill."

@firedrakez: Microsoft has been putting in the time and effort to build its infrastructure for years now. It also helps that they designed their OS from the ground up and that it's the most highly developed for OS on the planet.

The back compat supported these days requires a lot more work than it did for PS1/PS2 era titles. Sony who ditched BC in on the PS4 has got a lot more work to do to catch up in this area.

That all being said I think they'll be fine as far as things go with PS4 support.

@Barighm: You've clearly not played any BC titles on the Xbox One X. For some of the titles it's akin to getting a remaster. From what we're hearing about the Xbox series consoles it's going to be getting even better.

Here's a nice little watch https://youtu.be/H_dU4_RNm-s

Just finished playing Splinter Cell: Conviction and that game looked great.

@Barighm: It is much more fun playing a BC game that happens to be considered one of the best games of all time enhanced to 4K resolution on the Xbox One X today than a somewhat dated looking older game.

Of course it is impressive. I have experienced it on PCs as well and it is one of the selling points of that platform for many gamers, the ability to play older games enhanced and modded to higher resolutions and framerates.

@wahsobe: The Xbox Series S/X does this seamlessly without any issue. Why do we have to be playtesters for Sony's own compatibility issues? For all I know, one of these random "unexpected behaviors" or "errors" might just brick your new $500 console.

This just seems inept and incompetent from Sony's part.

@cboye18: Sony have always said PS4 Pro's boost mode may cause unexpected behaviours in games and guess what? Not a single game has encountered "unexpected behaviour" with boost mode on. They just like to cover their backs to stop Americans suing them.

83,000 are reddit posts alone.

Then you have this whole very in-depth thread:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/all-games-with-ps4-pro-enhancements.3101/
(Spoiler, some games run worse on boost mode.)

Games like SOMA and Tembo the Badass Elephant both experience crashes. Slenderman has lighting issues (don't ask me why).

@mcnichoj:

I ain't lying. The number of search results means nothing. I got loads of "results" but every one I clicked on either had nothing to do with boost mode or was people having bugs they questioned whether it's because of boost mode and it turned out standard PS4 had the same issues.

The link you provide has nothing to do with boost mode. They're games that have Pro Enhancements (increased resolution, improved gfx, shadows etc) which is different. Sometimes devs get overeager trying to reach 4k or add better effects so the game runs a bit slower than the 1080p version on a standard ps4.

*Edit I see there is a boost mode section on a different page but all the games in that section report no issues or run better.

Boost mode is for og PS4 games pre 2017. There's no gfx enhancements. With boost mode off the gpu/cpu slow down to og PS4 speeds for older games. Boost mode on means the gpu/cpu run at full speed so some older games may run a bit quicker, or drop frames less.

SOMA was patched quickly. Badass Elephant. . I can't find much info on other than "some people are reporting crashes" but then there's reports saying it may have had nothing to do with boost mode so the jury is out on that one.

Slenderman it seems did have some minor lighting issues.

So okay 2 or 3 games had some issues. If that's what Sony mean with their statement about PS4 games running on PS5 then that's great news.

@analgrin: I hope you're just being willfully ignorant. You didn't actually click on the link. Where do you think those "enhancements" come from? The boost mode. Fun fact; games released after the PS4 Pro aren't exclusive to the Pro and can still be played on older PS4 models, so they too use the boost mode. Marvel's Avengers which just came out has performance issues on boost mode.

@mcnichoj:

Dude even the link you sent me tells you what boost mode is at the top, I think I read that page more closely than you did, they have a separate page for Boost Mode which I mentioned in the edit to my above comment.

Look at the bottom of this page (page 5 of the the link you sent me) where Boost mode is separate from the rest of the thread. All the games there run fine.

www.resetera.com/threads/all-games-with-ps4-pro-enhancements.3101/page-5#post-625642

And on Sony's official boost mode page is says:

"Boost Mode is a feature that is available on PlayStation 4 Pro systems which have system software version 4.50 or higher. Turning on Boost Mode may improve the frame rate of some PS4 games that were released before the introduction of PS4 Pro on November 10, 2016. If you experience unexpected behavior during game play when Boost Mode is turned On, then it is recommended that you turn Boost Mode Off"

It's just for games that came out before the PS4 Pro was released. If you turn off boost mode in system settings games that came out after 2017 still get all their pro enhancements.

Pro Enhancement & Boost Mode are separate things. Like I say, boost mode has had very few issues at all yet Sony still have a ominous warning about using it.

@analgrin: "enhancements" is just buzz word for "pro mode you can't turn off". So that long list of many games with issues under Pro "enhancements" will still be effected on the PS5. Your narrative that every single game runs completely fine on every Sony console is false. That has never been true for any console.

@mcnichoj:

"Your narrative that every single game runs completely fine on every Sony console is false."

That hasn't been my narrative at all. I've only ever been talking about pre 2017 PS4 games using PS4 Pro Boost mode as defined by Sony, after all if they're putting a disclaimer out about it it's their definition of what it is that actually counts. You wrongly took that to mean every game despite my efforts to clear that up for you.

I even supplied Sony's own definition of what Pro's boost mode is to clarify and you still want to use your own definition of it. I've made it 100% clear what I, and Sony mean so stop trying to change it to suit your own cause.

My "narrative" is Sony have a habit of being very cautious with their statements and they can sound more alarming than they they need be. I quoted their statement about Boost mode on PS4 Pro and possible "unexpected behaviour" which sounds scary but in the end only negatively affected 2 or 3 boosted games (again as defined by Sony) so it could be a similar issue again here with their statement about BC on PS5.

End of.

@cboye18: Exactly. Xbox utilizes an army of testers even on their BC games to make sure they work before they are released. That is how they find out some Xbox 360 games like Halo Reach didn't work very well on the Xbox One X and forced them to improve on their emulation techniques.

"I mentioned we had an army of testers, but we were pretty raw in terms of how we evaluated the games' capabilities. In a lot of cases, it was just side-by-side playthroughs. And Reach was sort of a key moment for us because we thought the game looked great. When we first started doing Reach, it was a mess. It was one of the most complex games we had done. We've got some early videos where nothing renders right, so when we got it playing and when we started playing it ourselves, it was a milestone achievement for us from the standpoint of the emulator rendering the game properly. Then we saw the analysis of the game and it was pretty clear we had missed."

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-xbox-one-x-back-compat-how-does-it-actually-work

They don't depend upon consumers to test them on a case by case basis and find out for themselves which work and which ones have problems, like Sony is doing on the PS5.

@DarkAztaroth: There's definitely going to be some issues, much like you've said. I've heard them talking about issues due to SSD moving data faster than titles expect and screwing up timings, which can create glitches ranging from minor texture issues to game crashing bugs.

In an article like this the warning in Sony's post should really have been quoted to keep people informed.

The keywords are "expect issues with many other titles"

I can see it already some games not saving progress, while some crashing halfway through the game, and some others showing visual and audio glitches as if the original games didn't shave enough bugs all of their own....

Well I guess that's the best Sony can do when they didn't have Backwards Compatibility on the plans right from the beginning.

Yes they have said this from the start I don’t know why your acting so surprised. The only thing is you might have to wait years for certain games to arrive. Microsoft are far faster and far better at this. But hey you might still have the 100 or so top most played games ready at launch which isn’t too bad really.

Just doesn’t compare to the thousands of games that will be playable at launch on XseX/S.

Phhheeeewwww, great news & I feel safe buying more digital games now. Still there seems to be no apparent reason why those non-AAA games cannot be ported over. Porting over your existing games is going to be a HUGE deciding factor whether I buy a new console, since they are just PC's now & there is no excuse!

Gonna buy some more EDF, EDF, EDF, EDF...........

@just1mohr: Every BC platform has a few games that just don't work. Yes, even on PC. If no one cares enough to update them, they won't work.

@Barighm: The main problem with old titles straight up not being playable on new console hardware is all surrounding licensing, this is not an issue on PC. With PC it's usually software compatibility and to a lesser degree hardware performance. This is more in line with what we're seeing with PS4 back compat on PS5. Although less OS related, more hardware related.

I think they're finally trying to sort out better contracts when licencing for the future now that they've realized that people are still willing to buy old titles for new hardware. It's such a pain in the ass to try to renegotiate a decade down the road for a title that will only be trickling cash.

@wahsobe: Uh...yes, it is an issue on PC. It being a software issue doesn't make it any less of a BC issue. DOS games don't magically work on Win 10 just because "PC!". Someone had to update it. Even then, I see all sorts of really old games on GoG with warnings about the old code being pretty funky on newer systems.

Maybe there are more modders around to do stuff like that, but let's not pretend PC is this magical piece of tech that automatically runs everything perfectly. And I believe the PS5's issue has more to do with them changing their database system, or maybe Sony buying Azure servers without telling Playstation about their plans.

@Barighm: When did I say it wasn't an issue on PC?

Really, DOS? Not enough DOS action for gamers these days? I'm pretty sure most BC complaints on PC are still running in the Windows environment. Most of those issues get solved by running windows in compatibility mode. The benefit of updating code is so that we don't have to run it in compatibility mode, as well as fixes or tweaks for any incompatibility issues. The games are seldom unplayable.

- Before you run out and give me a list of games that are unplayable, I want you to remember I didn't say there weren't unplayable games. you can list a hundred titles, it still means little against the tens of thousands of games available.

I feel like I need to quote myself here:

"With PC it's usually software compatibility and to a lesser degree hardware performance. This is more in line with what we're seeing with PS4 back compat on PS5. Although less OS related, more hardware related."

and Sony:

"Although many PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, some functionalities that were available on the PS4 console may not be available on PS5 consoles. In addition, some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles."

I feel pretty confident in my assessment. (provided people can accept that words like "less" and "seldom" are not definitive words)

You mean PS5 won't be able to play a couple of games no one even knew exists? Nice.

That's great, if that's it. BC is a huge factor for me - and this may encourage me to upgrade sooner

What is the reason for not including those games? They managed to port +4000 games to PlayStation 5 but not Afro Samurai 2!

@Abdulrahman1981: No one should actually be able to even "own" Afro Samurai 2. It was a planned episodic game that was VERY poorly received after the first episode came out to the point they cancelled all future episodes and automatically gave refunds to all purchasers while also removing it from their download history.

A handful of people may still have the ability to redownload it on their PS4 but I doubt those people would even want to.

With the other normal games on this list the issue might have something to do with the engine they're made in. That was the issue for why games like Vampire Smile and Charlie Murder couldn't be made BC from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One.

@Abdulrahman1981: I don't believe they "ported" anything - but just tested whether their BC implementation seemed to run the games ok. Personally, I'm a BIT skeptical they've actually gone through the whole library - but given the standard architecture I imagine compatibility issues will be rare and minor.

Why not these? Who knows - I assume there's just something about them that WOULD require a port to run; and that costs time and money (which nobody is going to spend on most of those titles...)

@xantufrog: they probably just asked the game companies to report any incompatibilities on their games and these are the 10 that were reported not playable. Maybe some companies didn't even bother and more games would be deem incompatible when time passes...
