Which PS4 Games Don't Work On PS5?

The PS5 can play nearly all PS4 games via backwards compatibility, but Sony has shared a list of games that only work on PS4.

The PS5 is backwards compatible with most PS4 games and can even offer a mixture of improved load times, enhanced visuals, and better frame rates. While Sony says the vast majority of PS4 games will be playable on the new system, a select few titles will not be compatible with the next-gen console, and we now know exactly which those are.

A support page on the official PlayStation website initially listed 10 games that would not be playable on PS5, but that number has dropped to eight games as of December 2020. The list includes some VR content, and it doesn't feature any enormous titles. The games you'll likely want to keep playing when you get your PS5 will still work. Joe's Diner fans are in for a rude awakening, though. We hate to be the ones to break this news, but you will have to keep your PS4 available in order to keep playing it. However, if a game is on the list, it could be removed later. Likewise, games could be added in the future if they are released for PS4 at a later date, though this is very unlikely.

Now Playing: Has PlayStation Done Enough? | Generation Next

It initially looked as if these 10 games would be the only ones that didn't work, but Ubisoft subsequently shared its own list with a handful of game that purportedly were incompatible. These are listed below, and include several VR games and entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Ubisoft has since removed a post listing them from its website; the games in question are listed below with an asterisk. Based on reports, these Ubisoft games do at least boot up, but it's possible you could encounter some issues as you play. You may want to wait for potential updates in order to get them to run more smoothly. Newer Ubisoft games will work more smoothly on PS5.

In our PS5 review, we noted that we found occasional glitches in non-Ubisoft games, such as a visual bug in Batman: Return to Arkham. Your mileage may vary, and it's possible some of these issues could be patched in the future. However, we don't suggest getting rid of your PS4 quite yet.

PS5-Incompatible PS4 Games

  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate*
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India*
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China*
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia*
  • Risk*
  • Star Trek Bridge Crew*
  • Werewolves Within*
  • Space Junkies*
  • Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma - Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man – Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen
  • Joe's Diner

All you need to do to play a backwards-compatible game on PS5 is put it into the disc drive, download it from PSN, or transfer it via external storage from PS4. Should there be a PS5 upgrade available, Sony also detailed that process. Even some PS4 games will see better performance via Game Boost without a PS5 upgrade.

Your PS Plus saves stored in the cloud will transfer from PS4 to PS5. This means that if you have a game you've only half-finished on PS4 and want to continue playing on PS5, you can install it on the new console, download your save data, and pick up right where you left off. This will be extremely useful for any games including via the PlayStation Plus collection that you may have played in the past, as the digital versions will be available right away on PS5. You must have a PS Plus subscription in order to use cloud saves. This differs from Xbox, which lets anyone with a free Xbox Live account make use of cloud saves.

You'll be able to keep using a DualShock 4 controller to play the PS4 games, though it won't work on PS5 games. PlayStation Move and PlayStation VR Aim controllers will be supported, as well. You'll want to keep your PS4's camera available, as well, as you'll need it to play these games. It appears the PS5's own camera will serve other purposes, possibly for enhancing the streaming experience.

Microsoft is also supporting the vast majority of Xbox One games on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with the exception of Kinect-only games. The same backward compatible original Xbox and Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One will be playable on the new hardware, as well. It doesn't appear more will be added.

PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition both released on November 12. Check out our guide on where to buy a PS5 for the latest information on how to secure an order.

Well darn, I do intend to play Syndicate at some point...It bothers me a lot more that the PS5 is not backwards compatible with PS3 games though...I would much rather get rid of my PS3 and keep my PS4 than vice versa, but I have way too many unplayed PS3 games for that...

I'm assuming that if I can't play Afro Samurai: Revenge of Kuma: Volume One, that I can still play on PS5 Afro Samurai: Revenge of Kuma: Volumes 2 -8?

Damn, the only reason I pre-ordered a PS5 was so I could play my PS4 copy of We Sing on it. Gonna cancel that order now, anyone who didn't get one interested in buying mine before I cancel? Thanks!

I recognize one game on that list, a game that didn't even come out for the PS4 originally.

Wouldn’t care if 100% didn’t work…fortunately I’m not that invested in any PS4 games right now and I’m not buying shit. Getting PS5 strictly for PS5 games.

"Shadow Complex Remastered"
Thankfully I have this masterpiece on Xbox.
Otherwise... I don't see anything of value here.
However, I'm pretty impressed it's only 10 games.
Hypothetically, with some more time, it should be 100%

Honestly, with the way Sony was withholding info during PS5 reveals I thought for sure most PS4 games would not be playable, so this is VERY good news. Of course I would love PS1-PS3 & PSP/PS Vita BC as well, what idiot wouldn't if it was free. You have got to be a selfish punk to deny someone else that joy that may have not had a chance to play those games. The more games total, the merrier!

@just1mohr: It didn't help that they worded things so ambiguously as well.

"The vast majority of the top 100 games, by play time, will be supported."

Like, was that supposed to mean the SAMPLE SIZE was the 100 most, and we should expect that to be indicative of the entire library? Or did that mean that was 'all' that worked. I always felt it was more the former, but they certainly took their sweet time clarifying.

Wanna keep playing ps4 games? dont throw away your current console. How hard?

My personal preference would be that there was absolutely no BC at all and that they could focus on developing new exciting things instead of having to cater to stragglers.

@nilsdoen: Well you either need to support legacy releases or constantly re-release everything.

The difference between "Now I have to rebuy my movies on DVD" and "Oh cool, my DVDs just work in the Blu Ray player"

It hurts no one, and is a HUGE deal for those who use legacy content.

I think the reason these games are not backwards compatible is because nobody actually owns them.......

@notjm: I actually owned Shadow Complex: Remastered. Only reason I think it's not next gen is that it was an Xbox 360 exclusive and that physical game on PS4 was only on limited run games for a bit.

@notjm: that attitude is exactly why BC is so neglected. if you ask now what games people are playing right now, no one mentions soul reaver or alone in the dark or blasto or bomberman live or legend of dragoon. but one day someone is thinking about it

likewise im sure many have played joes diner, shadow complex, isle of man etc. and would pop in the game this year at some point. if you start think this and that game doesnt matter soon the important list only consists of fortnite, cod, bf, fifa, nba, dark souls 3 and like 3 other games that are the ones played by 90% of people at the moment

Here is the solution that borrows from the idea of a former high level microsoft employee: "If you want to play ALL ps4 games without a hitch, we have a product that is a ps4 compatible device and it's called the ps4"

@notjm: imagine if 4K Blu-ray players didn’t play DVDs or regular HD Blu-rays. You’d be fine with having several players? BC is very convenient and often improves graphical quality and performance, which is the real advantage.

@KahnArtizt: You are comparing apples and Robin Williams here, the analogy doesnt work at all in this case. The PS3 and PS4 architecture were actually so different it is like you are asking "imagine if DVD players didn't play 8 track cassettes"....just because both machines are for gaming doesn't mean they work the same way....honestly what were you thinking with that analogy?

@notjm: Xbox did it. You can play the original Halo on an Xbox One X and do a local system link with an OG Xbox and play 8-player deathmatch. There's no excuses anymore. The PS3 architecture is the exception, not the rule and totally on Sony for doing something so unorthodox and unnecessary. PS3 was Sony's biggest mistake with the PS line.
