2015 has been an eventful year for Konami. The Japanese publisher has regularly made headlines in the past few months, some pertaining to its reportedly strained relationship with veteran developer Hideo Kojima and others about the company's financial outlook. So much has been written about the company and its controversial developments that we thought it was a good time to recap what's happened.

Below is a timeline of major events that have transpired in the past few months.

March 19:

Kojima Expected to Leave Konami After Metal Gear Solid 5

An inside source at Konami told GameSpot last month that esteemed developer Hideo Kojima would be exiting the company after Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ships in September. The decision comes in the midst of a reported power struggle between Kojima and Konami. [Full story]

March 20:

Konami Wants New Staff for Next Metal Gear Game

Just hours after we reported on Kojima's strained relationship with Konami, the publisher announced that it had started early production on the next Metal Gear Solid game. The company also said it was looking for fresh talent to work on this early-in-development game, a follow-up to The Phantom Pain. [Full story]

March 20:

Kojima: I Am 100 Percent Involved in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

In a bid to quell concerns that unrest at Kojima Productions would affect The Phantom Pain, Konami released a statement quoting Hideo Kojima as saying: "I want to reassure fans that I am 100 percent involved and will continue working on Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain; I'm determined to make it the greatest game I've directed to date. Don't miss it!" [Full story]

March 25:

Kojima Station Suspended Indefinitely

As many suspected, the broadcast event Kojima Station was put on hiatus. Given Kojima's uncertain future with Konami, it's not surprising that the series was suspended. What remains to be seen is if the broadcast will ever return, with or without Kojima. [Full story]

March 31:

Silent Hills/PT Website Removes Kojima Productions Logo

Konami wiped clean the Kojima Productions logo from the Silent Hills/PT website, leading some to believe the project might be in trouble (more on that later). Konami did the same for the Metal Gear Solid V websites earlier in the month. [Full story]

April 22:

"Meet The Head Transplant Surgeon at the Center of a Metal Gear Solid Conspiracy"

Kotaku UK reporter Gabriel Galliani dove into the very bizarre story of a head transplant neurosurgeon named Sergio Canavero who looks a lot like the doctor from The Phantom Pain's first teaser trailer. It's all very strange, and some have even suggested it's an extensive marketing ploy for the game. [Full story]

April 26:

PS4's PT, a Teaser for Silent Hills, Being Removed Soon

On this day, Konami announced that the "playable teaser" for Silent Hills will officially be removed from the PlayStation Store on Wednesday, April 29. It remains to be seen if the game will remain playable for people who already downloaded the free game, and if its removal is tied to the news that would be announced the next day. [Full story]

April 27:

Silent Hills Canceled, Konami Confirms

Konami made it official on April 27, confirming that the horror game is no longer in development. It was supposed to feature The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus and was to be directed by Hideo Kojima along with Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro, but it was not to be. Though Silent Hills may be canned, Konami stressed that it will "continue to develop the Silent Hill series." [Full story]

April 27:

Konami Voluntarily Delists Itself From the New York Stock Exchange

On the same day that Konami announced the cancellation of Silent Hills, the publisher also revealed that it was removing its shares from the New York Stock Exchange. But this seems like a practical, cost-saving move more than anything tied to that project. After all, over the past year, 99.71 percent of the company's common stock was traded in Japan and the United Kingdom. [Full story]

May 8:

Konami Will Report Earnings for the Latest Financial Quarter

If Konami has news to share regarding the future of the company, this could be a venue where it might do so. We'll be keeping a close eye, as usual, on this earnings report next week.

September 1:

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Releases

After years of development, The Phantom Pain will launch worldwide on this date for consoles, while the PC version will be released two weeks later. This will be a telling time: Will Hideo Kojima officially announce his departure from Konami? What will he do next? Check back in a few months to find out.

I'm no stock market expert, no sarcasm here, I barely understand the thing... But wouldn't pulling yourself off the American stock market before Metal Gear Solid 5; a highly anticipated game in a series that primarily sells BEST in North America, be an extremely stupid move? Why not wait until after the game comes out?

@acemcgregor: Do you mean they should wait to see if it makes enough money to "save" them? Or do you mean it might impact sales? I'm no expert either but here's my take.

Regarding enough money, I'm guessing they already know that even if the game is huge hit it won't be enough.

As for impacting sales, I don't see how it would have any effect. Something like that can shake up investors, analysts, B2B stuff, but sales of a consumer entertainment product like a game or movie, I can't imagine it would matter at all.

@hystavito@acemcgregor: Well the article says 99.71% of their stock was traded in England and Japan, so I assume it's not a whole lot of money in the U.S. and they're just bailing as part of their "restructuring". Just wondering if you had something that was going to be a surefire hit in North America why you wouldn't invest...

My personal theory is that in the next 10 years they're going to begin dropping out of the console market and switch to making handhelds and arcade gaming primarily in Japan.

Konami is a rotting corpse, a zombie wandering the land still pretending to be alive. It's wearing a fancy hat you can loot once (MGS5) but that's about it.

everything about the situation is slightly off and almost unreal. what if this is all an elaborate hoax, designed by the mastermind kojima himself? of course, the only possible reason i could see them doing this is for an experimental and extremely "out of the box" marketing campaign where it later ties into the game... they got us talking and our full attention, right? it seems to be working... it would the biggest HAHA moment of kojima's career if this was all elaborately constructed for a huge reveal at a later point. won't we all feel dumb then? you saw it here first! :D

@PodXCOM: the timing of everything is just too convenient. the announcement of them pulling down the pt demo and then the next day de-listing the stock exchange... all this just a mere weeks leading up to e3. it is all so bizarre... on the other hand, it is just as likely to be real and in fact an odd turn of events. i will say that i wouldn't be surprised if it goes either way at this point...

@playstationzone:

If Konami goes bankrupt, and the bank they owe money to intends to recover as much money from collateral as possible, there's no way Kojima as an individual can afford it by outbeating large corporations like Capcom, Square Enix or even EA. If the franchise is being sold, some mega rich corporation is gonna get it. That's almost a fact. Your's is a fantasy.

@JRD1912@rolento25@ignisnobueno: Well arguably, Hideo's first "really good" game was a game called "Snatcher", not the original Metal Gear.

Despite Metal Gear coming out before Snatcher, it was considered "pretty average" even though it sold high numbers thanks to it's unique premise (Stealth Games were nonexistent at the time). Snatcher on the other hand, was getting great reviews from just about everywhere, but it did not sell that well outside of Japan. Because of that, Snatcher never got a true sequel, but Metal Gear did: Metal Gear 2, which was praised a whole lot more than the original Metal Gear was and created the groundwork for what was soon to be called "Metal Gear Solid".

It makes you wonder though, if it was the other way around and Snatcher sold well while Metal Gear didn't, Metal Gear Solid wouldn't even exist, and we'd all probably know Hideo from the Snatcher series instead.

@chriss_m: They aren't making it. The only way to get more Suikoden games if for Konami to go bankrupt and sell the IP to someone who will.

That's why I want the company to crash and burn for their sins.

@chriss_m: Pretty sure Suikoden was dragged down a long time ago. Their studio admitted "we don't know how to make RPGs anymore" and was then disbanded. I think they got some mobile crap, but that's all.

This sucks, but at the same time Kojima has access to the best talent, crowdfunding will be his best friend, even though he doesn't really need it, and I'm sure he has some new projects he wants to develop. I love MGS, but I wouldn't be surprised if he felt somewhat shackled to that franchise. He can develop whatever he wants now.

Sad but true: Konami hasn't been putting much love on their franchises during the last 10 years...except for MG, which is a franchise that funds itself thanks to Mr. Kojima's genius and vision. Now that Kojima is leaving, there's no reason for Konami to invest millions on reviving their franchises under the risk of a failure. The gaming development business has become too competitive and Konami put themselves way behind their competitors. Konami will be leaving this business this year. The question here is which company is going to catch the rights to all those legendary franchises...

By the way, Mr. Kojima should focus on this: Kickstart Snatcher and Policenauts reboots.

Or maybe you should stop visiting IGN, like most people did years ago...
