Visceral execs defect to Activision

[UPDATE 2] EA confirms Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey have left former EA Redwood Shores; rival publisher announces pair will be working on installment in existing franchise and run all-new Bay Area studio.

Yesterday, job listings revealed that Activision is building an all-new games studio in the San Francisco Bay Area. Late today came a report that the megapublisher, one half of Activision Blizzard, has successfully wooed two senior developers away from its archrival, Bay Area-headquartered Electronic Arts.

According to sources close to Electronic Arts, this afternoon the staff of Visceral Games were informed that the internal studio, formerly known as EA Redwood Shores, was losing two of its senior members--general manager Glen Schofield and COO Michael Condrey. The pair then reportedly let it be known they were going to work at Activision's new studio, which remains unnamed.

Schofield is best known for being the driving force behind Dead Space, which was pitched internally to EA executives by a group of dedicated developers. Most recently, he has been promoting Visceral's upcoming project, Dante's Inferno. In an interview earlier this year, Schofield told GameSpot several unannounced projects are also in the pipeline at the studio.

A source that wished to remain anonymous told GameSpot that today's news capped several weeks of rumors of the pair's departure. These were fueled by intense recruiting by Activision of many staffers at Visceral, which had just been rebranded as EA's core gamer label earlier this year. "It's not a very happy day here," said the source.

[UPDATE] After this story was first reported, an EA rep gave GameSpot the following statement: "I can confirm that Glen and Michael are exiting EA. It takes a team of talented people to make a highly rated game like Dead Space. The team at Visceral are currently working on Dante's Inferno, Dead Space Extraction, and new titles that will be announced at a later date." EA also emphasized that EA senior vice president Nick Earl continues to oversee Visceral, where production on Dante's Inferno and Dead Space Extraction is continuing apace.

[UPDATE 2] Activision has confirmed that the exiting EA executives will indeed head up its new San Mateo, California ship. "We are currently hiring employees to work at a new studio that is opening in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California," a rep told GameSpot. "Glen Schofield along with Michael Condrey will lead the studio which will be creating a new game based on one of Activision's existing franchises. We will be providing more details regarding the game at a later date.

I should clarify what I said before about operational stuff. The making of games are operational stuff in the videogame business, but I don't think the new execs will not greelight new projects that the old general manager and COO would. That's my opinion. Awaiting for Dead Space 2 now and if they'll create a new ip I hope it to be in the FPS genre now.

If this had happened a few years ago, I would have said "good move by them". Fast forward to reality and all I can say is booo. Just my two cents.

Everyone should know that they're executives, managers. They aren't the creative force behind the studio. I think Visceral Games will continue to produce fun games with good quality. The effects that a general manager and chief operation officer defect could have are in the management of the finances, costs, production rates, operational stuff. If EA is following this filosophy of "good sequels/new IP games must be made, whatever the odds of the market", the replacements of this execs would follow it and just try to keep the things how they are and improve what can be improved, unless the new execs are morons and don't know about business or not attended to business administration school.

Not a big deal when you think of the amount of executive cross-over there is in this industry. Wouldn't be surprised if they went back to EA in a few years time. Very common in the business world.

@KyleMD03 You have no idea what its like in the industry, especially if you do something great like Dead Space and get little more than a pat on the back. I don't know what Glen's compensations was for DS, but if he was willing to leave to join a compensator, I am guessing it wasn't much. As Tim Schafer told Activision when they tried to sue over Brutal Legend: "You should have put a ring on it".

No honor at all. I had a lot of respect for Mr. Schofield before I saw this. If this is true and the two have jumped ship I wish them the best, but won't put much stock in their upcoming projects. Maybe Activision will publish Schofield's prison game lol.

So what it's cool to hate on the companies that make all the good games now? I think people need to put up or shut up. If you feel so strongly and hate a company so much for their success, then STOP buying their games, case closed. I happen to love many of the games that come from both camps.

A couple years ago, I thought that between EA & Activision, Activision was definitely the lesser of the two evils. But ever since their CEO game out and said more or less that they have no interest in publishing titles that they can't milk on a yearly basis, I lost all respect for them, especially hearing them whining about not being able to publish Brutal Legend now that it's got a ton of hype behind it. Honestly, it sucks that between the two of them, they account for a good 40-50% of the 3rd party games, but at least EA is willing to take a chance on new stuff.

I know, my words got mixed up. Sorry. @okassar, no need to start insulting people for a single mistake. You're the one failing here, you can't just go around saying that just because we're not face to face.

HavQ,how high is your IQ,2?It's people leaving EA for Activision, not the other way around.Fail. Coltsfan, you're just instantly turned off by Activision because they are making so much money that it's not even funny. Some people tend to think that way of big corporations....but realize that people are buying all these games from Activision-Blizzard because of how amazing most of them are.Like half the games I play are made by Activision, and it's the same for many others. They're just an amazing company.Just bought Prototype,my 10th game (on any system ever) by them, and I'm very satisfied.Don't troll. Now EA is another story....they went big with good games, and a lot of them, then they took things for granted and slowly started rotting as Activision bought Blizzard and Activision-Blizzard became a rising star.

@HavQ-San - I think that the executives were leaving EA and going to Activision not vice-versa.

Activision is not doing well. I mean, when they announced Science Papa, it became clear that they're desperate. I don't blame the execs for leaving, really.
