Variety: Spy Hunter film back on track

Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson reportedly will helm and write revitalized movie adaptation of Midway game.

The on-again, off-again big-screen treatment of Midway's arcade driving game Spy Hunter seems to be on once more. Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures is once again trying to turn the key on a Spy Hunter film, this time with veteran game-to-movie filmmaker Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat) set to cowrite and direct.

Whether or not Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson--previously attached to play the film's protagonist--will remain attached to the project is undetermined. Johnson previously appeared in Midway's Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run for the Xbox and PlayStation 2, a game that had been intended to tie in to the movie before Universal's production hit delays.

Among Anderson's current projects are Death Race (a remake of the 1975 cult classic Death Race 2000) and Castlevania, based on Konami's long-running vampire-hunting series.

No offense to the guy, but the only GOOD film that Anderson has done was the first Mortal Kombat. ;) Everything else has sucked. Don't even get me started on the crapfest that is his Resident Evil movies and AVP... Makes me want to kill someone just thinking about those horrible movies. :P

Why are all of these movies off of video games being delayed? There was halo and now this. What next? Street fighter or Asassin's Creed?

A Castlevania movie would be pretty cool if they did it right. I can't believe the Spy Hunter game even came out. The game got horrendous reviews. << LINK REMOVED >> Why are they even bothering to make the movie when they already know it'll be a bomb. I was shocked to find out that Uwe Boll was going to make a BloodRayne 2. Yikes. Give it a rest already. Resident Evil 3 is coming. Another Fantastic Four. Another Superman & Batman. All we need now is Iron Man, The Flash & a Wonderwoman movie next.

I never liked spyhunter games, they always seemed mediocre to me. "Nowhere to Run" was a step up but still felt like something was lacking, I have a feeling this movie will be the same.

I hope the word Jabroni, isn't mentioned at all in the dialogue. I mean, I'm definately not going to buy this game, or probably even play it, but still, no lame wrestling references please.

Paul. W.S. Anderson's movies ain't that bad imo. I enjoyed Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and Alien Vs Predator. Although not on a "this freakin ownz" level but surely he delivers a lot better than Uwe Boll. Tbh Anderson's movies are the only "watchable" movies that are based on games. Granted I disliked D.O.A but 4 outta 5 (Resident Evil 1 & 2, AvP, MK) is still pretty good. Though that's my opinion I guess.

I'll treat this movie like most people did the last game. Ignore it. Last thing I wanted to see was The Rock in a game I liked. It happened and I quit playing the game. I REFUSE to have a wrestler in a game that I play. Because they turn it into some Wrestle game or give it those elements. If I wanted that, I'd go out and buy Smackdown VS RAW... and I DON'T want it. They ruined the game. If the move has the Rock in it, I will refuse to go see it.

What gamers need to understand is when hollywood makes a movie based on a video game, it not for video gamers only. They have to make the movie for the general movie goer... And that hard. Gamers are mad cause it not true to the game and non gamers feel i don't weant to watch a movie about a videogame. Here another thing .. how does Boll get so many videogame rights?

I second sniper's reaction and can only add that it just won't be the same without the constant Peter Gunn music blaring in my ears.

Good job Paul "Ruin Your Franchise" Anderson. Looks like your bridging that gap between yourself and Dr. Boll nicely.

Please don't destroy Death Race 2000. That classic is a real work of art and you're beyond lucky to have it. I don't blame you for AVP, I even had a hard time seeing it as more than a novelty match up. Freddy vs. Jason for instance.

This could be Anderson's big chance for a bounce-back after the Dead or Alive film if he pulls it off.
