Uncharted 4 Story Changed "100 Percent" After New Directors Came On

"We want it to be a mind-blowing, eye-popping, sweaty-palms adventure."

The story for action-adventure game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End changed "100 percent" when Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley came aboard the project, Druckmann revealed in a new AP interview.

The game was originally in development under the direction of Amy Hennig and Justin Richmond, but they left the studio in early 2014. Though it was not confirmed, reports indicated Hennig was allegedly "forced out" by Druckmann and Straley, a point that the studio has denied.

Druckmann and Straley, who worked on the first Uncharted and its sequel before moving on to The Last of Us, were named co-directors of Uncharted 4 in June 2014, according to Game Informer.

No information was provided as to the specific changes Druckmann and Straley made to the Uncharted 4's story. However, Nathan Drake actor Nolan North shared some insight in an interview last year, saying a lot of work was thrown out after Hennig left Naughty Dog.

The development team "shot eight months of her story and it was all thrown away," he said. "Amy is still a very dear friend of mine and she's brilliant. But the Last of Us guys were the next team there, so they took over and they just wanted their own flavor. They got rid of some of the other people that were involved and just redid their thing."

North said Uncharted 4's overall tone is going to be "slightly different" than Hennig's vision.

"It has to be, you know," he said. "You can't have a Robert Ludlum novel that's going to be the same as Stephen King. It's just that they're different styles. But it's true to the story."

In the AP interview, Straley said Uncharted 4 is the "biggest, most ambitious" game Naughty Dog has ever made.

"We want to do this justice," he said. "We want it to be a mind-blowing, eye-popping, sweaty-palms adventure. Everybody is bleeding out of their eye sockets to make it come together. We want to make sure Drake is sent off properly."

Uncharted 4 is the final entry in the Uncharted series that Naughty Dog plans to develop (but not necessarily the final game in the series) and the last game to star Nathan Drake.

"It's time," Druckmann said. "Sometimes, a character just lets you know it's time to move on. For me, that was part of the intrigue of coming back to this world. You never see something successful in the industry end. It usually just fizzles out."

After multiple delays, Uncharted 4 launches exclusively for PS4 at the end of April.

Just this week, a thrilling new story trailer was released. It was great, but it had a problem, too--it used concept art from Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Naughty Dog has since apologized for the "regrettable mistake" and released a new version of the video with the art in question removed.

How can it be sweaty palms when we see the protagonist smashing through wooden beams hanging from the back of a lorry and taking bullets to the chest without injury? Not tense at all when you play as a health regenerating immortal. And neither are 99% of all games created.

Uncharted 4 permadeath edition. Now that would be sweaty. Getting shot actually handicapping you would be great as well. There needs to be consequences for you sucking at the game and going back three steps to the nearest checkpoint isn't it.

Anything else is just the same old unrealistic action we've seen for years and not tense in the slightest. But hey it is a AAA game. It is built for people who are scared of skill.

@dexda: The crushing difficulty setting in these games will get your palms sweaty if normal or hard is too easy for you. But I do agree with you that a permadeath mode would be pretty sweet. I've beat all three on crushing and I want to try to go through all of them on the new brutal difficulty in the nathan drake collection where drake dies in 2 bullets and enemies have pretty high health, but I don't know if I want to put myself through that punishment. Haha.

@merimack: So making enemies bullet sponges and Drake out of glass is the same as difficult to you? Okkkaaayyy good to know.

The only thing you just did is tell me that Brutal mode is primitive and cheap.

Proper difficulty comes from enemy design, AI and gameplay mechanics. Not tanking everyone up. That is the sort of BS Bethesda do in their games and it stopped being fun about 12 years ago.

@dexda: Your comment above spoke volumes lol I guess you've never played a Uncharted game on a harder difficulty setting than normal lol that's assuming you've even played a Uncharted game at all.

Bottomline, ANYONE who's played ANY Uncharted game on its highest difficulty setting knows this.

On another note, if you want to play a game where one blow/hit can kill or a loss of a limb can determine the outcome, I highly recommend you play a game called Bushido Blade.

@louixiii: I played Drake's Fortune on the hardest difficulty and it was still way too easy. Typical piss easy AAA casual fest.

I got bored of the same shooting sequences over and over before I was even 1/3 of the way through. I mean when you are actually going into the saves to see how long you've been playing because it is getting boring that says a hell of a lot about a game.

Or when you load up the game after a week of not playing because you didn't have enough motivation to keep going.

@dexda: That's how I felt about Gears Ultimate (granted I had already beaten the original on 360), but anyway...try Uncharted 2 on it's hardest setting. Uncharted 2 was the best in the series

@louixiii: No thanks. The things I didn't like in Drake's Fortune are still there in 2. Just because 2 is overall a better experience why would I want to run though a game that has combat I don't like just in the hope that I enjoy it?

They lost my support when they bored me to tears in Drake's Fortune.

Naughty Dog really are barking up the wrong tree if you ask me. They make action games and yet they are shit at action. The best bits are the scripted quick time set pieces. They should move their attention and start following Quantic Dream's lead. Make a proper cinematic game instead of diluting the experience with shit shooting mechanics.

@dexda: Well that has nothing to do with the difficulty. You just don't like the game. I loved the original when it released of PS3 so I can't say the same. Matter of fact, one of the best scenes in the original is the boat scene in the beggining and that wasn't scripted. To each is own.

@louixiii: Well yeah I'd already said that so I'm not repeating myself. The difficulty was just one of many reasons why I didn't like it. It is the reason most AAA games bore me these days.

That was Witcher 3's biggest issue for me as well. Even on Death March where you had to use all items to help you survive but you never really felt out of control. But unlike Uncharted, CD Projekt Red nailed pretty much every other aspect of the game. Which is why it is up there with my all time favourite games.

The boat scene was the best..........Where you open a chest and then IMMEDIATELY pick up a handgun and start Ramboing pirates in the face. Then you realise that is the entirety of the gameplay. Well apart from mind numbingly boring and trivial platforming sections. Oh yeah and the "puzzles" that even my dog could solve.

@dexda: Strange that there are such differing opinions on this series. My favorite part of the series is the gameplay and gunfights. I haven't played Drake's fortune in a while so I cant remember much of it but I can remember playing 2 and 3 and having some insane moments during gun fights and then doing those fights again as "donut Drake" haha. Really, the most memorable parts of the series for me are the gameplay sections and not really the cutscenes. If uncharted changed to a quantic dream style game I'd honestly leave the series.

@dexda: You summed up my thoughts exactly when it comes to this series. Clearly the whole is greater than the sum of its parts when it comes to uncharted in most people eyes because, when you break it down, the gameplay and AI in these games are mediocre at best.

A pretty face and action heavy scripted sequences is all this series is good for but people love it for it.

@dexda: It's as if it's a video game or something and doesn't perfectly emulate real life. Doesn't mean it can't be tense or the characters can't be in danger. No one wants a perfectly realistic game.

@SoNin360: I didn't say it needs to emulate real life perfectly but by their very design games these days are not tense and the do not give any sense of danger. I can't remember the last time I played a game and was legitimately scared of death or scared that I'd have to go back to the previous manual save point.

They've removed all skill from the games and as a result all sense of presence and fear.

@dexda: Kojima wanted to do that for MGS2. The game would cost $5, but if you die, you have to buy another copy. Konami then took away his crack.

@lostn: You do know permadeath doesn't mean the game stops working right? It just means you start from the beginning again.

Permanent permadeath would never work. Hardcore mode is used in a few games and works VERY well.

@dexda: What I'm saying is Kojima's idea was very similar to permadeath. Not that it is exactly the same, or that your idea would require buying a new copy if you died.

He proposed a model to Konami where a very good player could beat the game for $5, while a terrible player might spend $100 on the game. Konami said he was crazy and didn't allow it so it never got off the ground. For once I side with Konami on this.

"I have so many weird ideas," he says, "but I have to make sure my ideas will sell too. If I wasn't a manager of the company, I would probably be creating all these weird games. But as a manager I can't allow it." Speaking of weird ideas, Kojima once had what he thought was a great concept: designing a product where the player would be forced to buy a new copy of the game every time the player character died. "As I said, I have some very impractical ideas," he admits with a grin.

@lostn: No, in Uncharted 3 there was a co-op survival mode, which I guess was like Horde mode, albeit with new objectives each round (such as get kills from within a certain area, or capture a piece of treasure). But the co-op in Uncharted 2 (as well as a separate co-op mode in 3) was it's own non-canon storyline that took place over 5 or so levels. Probably took around 2 hours, give or take, to play through them all. It was pretty simple but a nice addition, and it is confirmed for Uncharted 4. Hopefully they take the co-op story even further than before.

@snogglethorpe: Not a bunch, just a small group (3 people, to be exact. could be more in U4). But other than that, yeah. You fight through the levels and help each other out, there were even quasi-cut-scenes interspersed, and boss battles at the end of each mission. Uncharted's multiplayer has always had a cult-following, but it's still unfairly overlooked. Probably because it has that stigma of a "single-player franchise adding multiplayer", but it's never just been tacked on, Naughty Dog always goes the extra mile with it.

Sorry but I've never liked these games.....they're more or less bad storytelling, dumb encounters and fights and the whole E3 showing for the game was annoying, forget the technical error they had, that whole encounter with that stupid fracking truck was annoying to watch....hell halfway through it I fell asleep a little......but that's par for course for all their games.....

never got into Jak, TLOU or the UC series.....

"We want it to be a mind-blowing, eye-popping, sweaty-palms adventure." Yeah, good luck with that.....

@MJ12-Conspiracy: love TLOU, but Uncharted is pretty rocky in my book too. I do really like the characters and the light "Indiana Jones" vibe, but it really feels like you're an outsider interacting with that "film" than it does being challenged through real platforming and combat. TLOU shared many of the basic properties, but IMO every single one of them was executed substantially more elegantly and completely.

@7tizz: @MJ12-Conspiracy: I thought I was the only one.

What got me was in Drake's Fortune when you are walking along and you can see kill boxes set out in front of you plain as day. A load of walls for cover and a turret at one end. "Ooooo I wonder what is going to happen here?.......AGAIN!".

Like I'm supposed to be shocked when I cross the invisible line on the floor and the enemies come out of nowhere even though I SAW the area from a mile back.

@Benny_a: I like a ton of stuff......

gen 6 [PS2 era] GTA, Hitman up t Blood Money with that being the last one i really liked, Onimusha series [all 4 main games as well as the GBA tactics game, hated Blade Warriors], I like DW games on occasion DW5 and DW Gundam 3 are my faves, MGS saga, Mass Effect and generally most of Bioware's RPG's, Bethesda RPG's, id Software shooters, Halo up to Reach with that being the last one I liked....I like racers, Forza NFSU2 and MW, Burnout 2 to Revenge?? I liked Midnight Club 3 more for the customization than the actual racing lol Gran Turismo 3 was badass....

I kinda dig fighters but I suck at em, I liked Soul Calibur until number 3 that being the last one I liked, love the Mortal Kombat series, I liked Eternal Champions before Sega killed it, Killer Instinct on SNES was the best.....

I liked the strategy Front Mission games and the newer XCOM games kinda bring that back but with far more deadly losses when you frack up.....

when I think of my top 3 story games MGS any, KOTOR and Mass Effect are the ones I think of, when I think of a explorable world with a story in it as well as deep RPG Bethesda games....I have an even wider variety of stuff I like going all the way back to NES so i'm not some hipster sipping wine doling out critique.....

If you're playing Uncharted for the story, you might as well just watch Indiana Jones and play the original Tomb Raider games. Then again, if you arent playing for the story, you're just playing a subpar shooter game. So I don't know

I am excited for Uncharted 4's release but not for the same reason as a lot of people. I want Uncharted 4 to get out of the way so that Naughty Dog can start working on Last of Us 2 in earnest. The Uncharted series is good and I enjoy playing the games but Last of Us crushed it when it comes to atmosphere, emotion, and story. There is so much more to that universe that needs to be revealed in sequels. When I heard that the next game ND was working on was another Uncharted, I was so disappointed that that took precedence over a Last of Us sequel. Will I buy Uncharted 4? Sure. Am I more excited about the unannounced Last of Us sequel than a game I can buy in a few weeks? Yup.

@scoobybri: I want them to make something new as opposed to TLOU2.

If they make TLOU2, it will probably end up being an open world game with collectibles, because pretty much every AAA game has turned into that. Or been forced to due to pressure from other developers, and the open world expectations of gamers.

I'd like to see Naughty Dog's take on a Mass Effect style game. They've yet to do sci-fi actually.

Of course it's not my call. Neither is TLOU2. That's what 'wanting' is about. At one stage TLOU was also 'something new', as opposed to the next Uncharted game.

TLOU was Sci-fi.

I want to go into space.

And also, I don't consider TLOU sci-fi. There's nothing sci-fi about it other than a zombie virus, which in itself is not sci-fi. Someone could conceivably engineer a virus like that today.

I think this is a good thing. I wouldn't want new directors coming in and working on a story they aren't passionate about. Also, I just replayed the Uncharted trilogy on PS4, and man is some of the writing actually kind of bad. No disrespect to Amy Hennig (U2 is my favorite game of all time), but I think Neil is a much better writer and Bruce will evolve the gameplay more than Justin would've. I'm hyped!

Currently, alongside a couple of other games, I am playing Soul Reaver, which Amy Hennig had a huge part in. I enjoy what she has contributed to Uncharted, but I also think Neil Druckmann and Straley are talented as well, and while I love Uncharted, The Last of Us unbelievable blew it out of the water to me in a few respects, so while I am excited for four, and again, still love Uncharted, I am curious to see whether four can outdo, or be as good as The Last of Us. In the end though, I may not be comparing those two, but how it stacks up in the Uncharted saga. Looks fantastic.

Nothing more than an overrated re-skin.

Druckmann is a liar and Amy hennig has made uncharted what it was all for naughty dog and Sony to kick her to the curve for the last of us devs. I wanted a adventurous uncharted story, not a dramatic thriller like the last of us.

@kentray1985: REALLY? AMY made Uncharted? AMY??? Amy made the most boring and shittiest Uncharted ever U3!

Niel Druckmann worked on Uncharted 2, the BEST Uncharted of the 3 and the one that put Uncharted on the Map (U1 wasn't really popular) and then he worked on TLOU a game that BLOWN Away everyone and beat Uncharted in both critical acclaim, awards, sales and it wasn't 4 hours long.

@Benny_a: "Worked on." Druckman worked on Uncharted 2, it was not "his" Uncharted. He worked on the first one, too, so if you're going to act as if the first game was unpopular because of Amy Hennig's writing, you may as well lump him in with her rather than trying to skew the facts. But Hennig was the creative director for the series, as well as head writer and director on all three, so I'm not sure what you're going for here. The series has been consistently enjoyable. Under a different head writer and director, it's easy to see why some people are uneasy and hope that it won't be lacking the somewhat lighthearted tone of the other three games. So, yes, for a lot of gamers, Amy did make Uncharted, same as she made Legacy of Kain.
