Twitch Responds To Allegations Against Streamers On The Platform

Amid allegations some of Twitch's big-name streamers have used their status for abuse, Twitch has released a statement.

Update 6/30: Amid all the recent Twitch bans over alleged abuse and misconduct within the streaming community, President Donald Trump's Twitch account has also been suspended temporarily, with a Twitch spokesperson citing "hateful" material as the reason: "Hateful conduct is not allowed on Twitch. In line with our policies, President Trump’s channel has been issued a temporary suspension from Twitch for comments made on stream, and the offending content has been removed." The ban points to a wider crackdown among Twitch and even other sites, like Reddit, against content that violates its terms of services. Reddit recently banned The_Donald forum, among thousands of others, after adjusting its hate speech policies.

Update 6/28: Following the promise earlier this week to begin handing out suspensions, Twitch has banned multiple Twitch streamers who have been accused of sexual abuse. In what appears to be a seemingly unrelated action, DrDisrespect has also been banned, but no reason has been publicly given. It appears the ban is permanent. However, he says he is not sure why the ban was handed out and has only tweeted a single time since his ban.

Update 6/24: Twitch has issued a new statement on the current investigations into Twitch streamers accused of sexual abuse and harassment. "We are reviewing each case that has come to light as quickly as possible while ensuring appropriate due diligence as we assess these serious allegations," the statement reads. "We’ve prioritized the most severe cases and will begin issuing permanent suspensions in line with our findings immediately."

A selection of Twitch streamers stopped streaming for 24 hours in protest of Twitch's lack of movement on the issue. This includes Ray Fisher, who posted on his Twitter that he had been called racial slurs while playing games and wanted reform in the gaming community.

Twitch notes that they're seeking more information in cases where the incident happened outside of a Twitch-related event, and in other cases they "will need to report the case to the proper authorities who are better placed to conduct a more thorough investigation." They encourage anyone affected to use the confidential reporting tools on each streamer's channel page.

"We’re also committed to continuing our efforts to make Twitch a safer environment with more tools to combat harassment and hate," the statement continues. "We have work underway including a review of our Hateful Conduct and Harassment policies, enhanced offensive username detection, improvements to AutoMod and our Banned Words list, and other projects focused on reducing harassment and hateful conduct."

"We acknowledge that we can’t singlehandedly tackle pervasive issues across the gaming and broader internet communities, but we take our responsibility as a service for our community seriously," the statement continues. "We will continue to assess accusations against people affiliated with Twitch and explore ways Twitch can collaborate with other industry leaders on this important issue."

New reports continue to come in against numerous Twitch streamers. At the time of writing, there is no acknowledgment of the accusations against many of Twitch's streamers on the site's front page.

Original story follows.

It could no longer be said that gaming is having a #metoo moment, but rather an ongoing #metoo movement. Amid a new wave of allegations surfacing on social media, those who have previously named their abusers are now demanding to know why the platforms that host known abusers' content have not acted to take them down--with Twitch at the center of the controversy.

With multiple tweets claiming that Twitch has been given information on how some of their big-name partners are using that platform to abuse women, and chosen not to act on it, streamers and fans called on Twitch and its CEO Emmett Shear to step up.

Shear has now shared an internal Twitch email sent on the subject, while Twitch has put out an official statement, but some don't think the statement is enough.

Now, people are calling for a Twitch blackout to take place on Wednesday 24, asking streamers to stay off Twitch for 24 hours.

Others are going further by pledging to cancel their ongoing Twitch subs and donate to streamers directly, without giving Twitch money through subscriptions or bits.

While the movement is centered around allegations that Twitch partners and affiliates have used their position to abuse women, those involved are also concerned about the amount of racism, homophobia, and transphobia that often goes unchecked by big-name streamers.

In the past, Twitch has banned the accounts of streamers whose abuse has been investigated and charged by authorities, such as Thomas Cheung, who was arrested after an undercover sting in Atlanta to catch child predators. However these punishments haven't always been strict across the board.

In December 2018, Australian streamer MrDeadMoth was arrested and charged with assault after appearing to attack his partner during a live Twitch stream. Despite the arrest, however, MrDeadMoth was initially only given a 14 day suspension from Twitch--which was later lengthened in response to community outcry.

Even as parts of the community call for a blackout, Twitch is no-doubt preparing for an influx of new streamers after Microsoft announced the end of Mixer. Twitch has extended the olive branch to streamers left without a platform, with a tweet addressing the Mixer community.

These are the days where anyone working for you or using your platform is considered part of the companies image. Prospective employers now ask potential staff for their social media accounts to see if they are the type of person they want working for them. Its not just the CEO anymore. It's everyone from the guy sorting mail in the basement to the guy at the top. That also includes celebrity caliber people using your service, like these Twitch streamers. Like it or not, they are part of Twitches image. They need to clean house if they want to continue as a company or people will boycott them into doing it. That's just how it is these days.

@bdrtfm: even today need to remember that even just one person can cause a riot online. meaning making lot of noise and veiled threats screaming into emptyness. doesnt mean a boycot works

twitch likes to attract big audiences and there are people who enjoy listening to "guy humor" or something else that might upset someone. like we talk about gun games not turning people into killers, south park hasnt made me a handicapoldpeople-mugging psycho

i kinda preferred when people were accused of living in our bubbles. if everyone likes their bubbles maybe they should be allowed to stay there

ofc i dont know what is all this fuzz exactly about. physical harm and threats and coercion directed to an individual and all that is of course bs that needs to be punished. but in modern world its really hard to tell who is actually getting mauled by wolves and who is screaming just for the sake of it

I always ask this first. Why didn't they go to the police and file a lawsuit? If the streamer in question did something illegal or was committing abuse on stream then yes kick them off Twitch. If they are using their fame to convince people to do them favors then no that has nothing to do with Twitch and everything to do with that person.

It's not Twitch's job to police off platform behavior.

@dragonsama: Because hitting people in the pocket book has always been very effective. You can spend days/weeks/months in court or you can hit them where it really hurts. Or you can do both.

@bdrtfm: While that works it's not Twitch's place to do anything since it was off-platform behavior. Their statement should have read.

"We do not condone this behavior but since it did not occur on Twitch nor is there any legal proceedings related to it we will not comment or take any action. If there is some type of criminal or legal action taking place we will reevaluate our relationship with a streamer at that time"

Nice and clean and covers their butt. All this cancel culture stuff needs to end.

There are T&C docs and enforcement for this. If this is really about Twitch not enforcing their T&C, then that's certainly worth complaining about.

*CRIMES* are investigated by *LAW ENFORCEMENT.*

...but this is a shakedown. Fear the mob, bend the knee, etc. Scattershot across a whole gaggle of "whatever or whomever you want to complain about," dogpiled on.

@gunnyninja: Primarily it lets you vicariously experience games you don't own and don't plan on buying. And depending on the streamer and size of their following, you can get involved with little sub-communities and make new friends.

@gunnyninja: i used to think like that, until i got bored of 80% of games. games like assassins creed, division, destiny etc have such a low interest to me but not entirely 0. so i might look at a couple of streams to see the general gist of the game and then feel like i played or experienced it while avoiding paying for the grindy microtransaction fest

@gunnyninja: Game Journalism integrity is perceived at an all time low. Whether true or not, a lot of the writers pander to each other to how artisitic they can write over the content of a review to base our purchasing decision on - and can also be swayed with exclusive access and publisher advertising pressure. So it's nice to be able to turn in to the low man on the totem pole with only a couple viewers and watch a game for myself before purchasing. There are shills in streaming as well, but according to the FTC they have to let folks know if they are a paid promoter - which isn't enforced well, if at all, so those streamers targeted for viral marketing concepts for games are not in the 1-30 viewer crowd and you can talk to them honestly and ask questions :)

@gunnyninja: Some of these people are so hilarious, there have been times where I was in tears over funny players.

And sometimes, it's just cool AF to watch jedi's do crazy shit in games.

Sometimes I also use it to watch gameplay if I am on the fence about purchasing a specific title.

MrDeadMoth? Wasn't that the dude who was getting shit thrown at him by his wife/ girlfriend? She assaults him multiple times, and he goes too jail. What a great example of how justice is blind to women assaulting men.

@trust2112: The whole story of that is she asked him to stop and do something for the family. He refused. She threw stuff at him and he went over and beat her down. he apparently had a history of abuse to her. They both were being immature but a beatdown was not warranted there.

The guy plead guilty in court. Please research this stuff before you spout off on it.

@dragonsama: I saw the video. Chick throws multiple things at her husband, including a full can or soda or beer. I do not have to research anything. I know what I saw on that video. She started assaulting him, he defended himself, and he went too jail. You sugar coat the truth all you want, it doesn't change what that video shows.

@trust2112: No , Defending yourself means he had no other options. that wasn't the case here. He simply could have left and/or call the police. he didn't do that. He got up, Walked to where she was, and beat her down.

She wasn't right throwing stuff at him and she should have been charged. However he definitely wasn't right getting up and beating her down.

they both were wrong but don't act like he was right in any sense because he wasn't at all.

@dragonsama: you totally stepped round his point though. She didn't receive any sort of punishment at all. By you're own logic it is ok to be assaulted by people as long as you dont murder them back lol.

@walbo: Nobody said she was in the right. Generally, police won't charge and a DA won't prosecute in such a situation because you're going to waste a lot of time and resources for a jury to say "screw this noise...he was abusive to her for a long time and she's suffered enough."

Also, I don't know what she threw, but if she wasn't throwing anything that could actually be harmful, then it wouldn't satisfy the requirements of the crime. For example, throwing a teddy bear at someone doesn't create the apprehension of imminent bodily harm, so nobody would ever be charged with assault for it. A plate or pot on the other hand would be a different story.

@esqueejy: and that right there is the problem.she received no punishment for throwing stuff at people yet is a blameless victim when the dog she was poking with a stick bites. I dont know about this guys case specifically but contrary to what society tells you domestic violence is rarely black and white its more of a messed up gray, this is an opinion of someone who grew up around domestic violence. My point is if society accepted this and nipped it in the bud by calling out women who think its acceptable to throw stuff at their partners and get away with it both socially and legally then it would do wonders for dropping violent assaults on women.

@walbo: We do punish women for throwing things. I personally had an eviction trial I was trying interrupted so the judge could hear an emergency restraining order request from a guy with a lump and still bleeding cut on his forehead from a guy who said his girlfriend threw a can opener with a marble handle at his head, and the judge issued the TRO in a heartbeat. IF the guy filed charges, she'd have been arrested that day. Your arguments are foolish and evince a cartoonish version of reality that plays in your heads because you have non real experience with what you're talking about.

@dragonsama: I think what he's trying to say is that she should have received punishment for throwing things at him. And if your about to tell me the beating was punishment enough, that's essentially saying two wrongs make a right (she hurt him so he hurt her).

Yes it was awful of that guy to beat her (as i think hitting a woman is one the worst things a guy can do) but that doesn't give her the right to throw stuff in the first place.

This really has nothing to do with Twitch itself. This has more to do with terrible people using their fame to take advantage of fans. They would be doing this no matter what or where they got their fame from. It's not your works responsibility to control your personal life.

@Lord_Sesshy: And why should Twitch keep letting them stream? These streamers would be nothing without these platforms. And if they cross a line, it is the streamers responsibility to end their career. Twitch needs to go after all these streamers and end their streaming careers.

@Lord_Sesshy: Well....yes....true.....

But that doesn't mean the platform which is supporting them has to. If an actor uses his fame to abuse someone, that's not the studio's fault, but if another studio hires that actor, well, then that studio can face the backlash.

Same thing's true in real life. Your work can't control your life, but your work CAN fire you if you commit crimes or take other actions that violate your employment agreement even if you did those things on your own time. Twitch can do the same by "firing" folks by saying "You can't stream here, we don't want your money."

If a crime was committed indeed, shouldn't the police be taking care of it? Cancel culture is the worst. Accusing someone without proof, leaning on mob justice is just ridiculous.

@Warlord_Irochi: There is a reddit thread on it, where both sides are telling their stories. Some of them are nothing more than teenage drama where they cheated on one another and call it sexual abuse. (Seriously)

Angry Joe is lawyering up. One or two have apologized to each other for treating each other like crap when they were younger... I mean what a crock. And the problem is? The one or two that MIGHT be legit and be able to be proven are going to be drowned out in a storm of Millenial angst.

Welcome to the giant high school that is social media: A place where no one has to grow up and feelings are more important than truth. No need for investigations or any of that nonsense. Your first instinct of what you FEEL is right will suffice to destroy someone. So let’s all just all scream as loud as we can until we get our way.
