'The Wii has stalled' - Iwata

Nintendo president says top-selling console has hit a wall due to dearth of "high demand" software, "preparing for next year."

Though it once appeared to be a tiny sales juggernaut, Nintendo's top-selling Wii has struggled in 2009. In July, the Japanese publisher reported April-June revenues that had slid 40 percent from a year prior to ¥253 billion ($2.81 billion). Nintendo didn't fare much better during its July-September quarter, saying yesterday that sales fell 34.5 percent to ¥548.1 billion ($6.09 billion) during the first half of its fiscal year.

Put the Wii down, Iwata. Things aren't that bad…
Put the Wii down, Iwata. Things aren't that bad…

Nintendo's slipping performance has not gone unnoticed by the publisher's president. As reported by Japan's Mainichi Newspaper and translated by GameSpot, Nintendo executive Satoru Iwata told analysts and investors as part of a post-earnings Q&A that a weak software lineup has contributed to the Wii's sluggish performance.

"The Wii has stalled," Iwata said. "Games of high demand could not be continuously released and the good mood has chilled." Iwata went on to note that it will be difficult to recover from "the slowdown in demand," but he also expressed optimism over Nintendo's ability to continue selling Wiis.

According to Japan's Nikkan Sports (translated by GameSpot), Iwata also said during the conference that Nintendo misjudged market conditions as they pertained to the publisher's sales strategy.

"The mood of the market got colder than expected, and there was a difference in expectations," he said. "Now, we are preparing for next year and thinking about what to do the year after next." Iwata reportedly went on to note that Nintendo is optimistic about its chance to right the Wii's downward sales trend going forward.

Notably, reports have emerged that Nintendo is planning a number of enhancements to its console. Earlier this week, reports surfaced that Nintendo would be introducing Netflix's online video-streaming service to the console, functionality that is already available for the Xbox 360 and will soon be introduced to the PlayStation 3. Analysts and industry insiders also expect the publisher to launch an HD version of the Wii or an all-new system in 2010 or 2011 to better compete with Microsoft and Sony's consoles.

As for Nintendo's other hit hardware, Nikkan Sports reports that Iwata downplayed suggestions that the DS was losing ground to Apple's increasingly ubiquitous iPhone. "Our presence in the marketplace is growing," he succinctly stated. Yesterday, Nintendo also took the lid off its fourth DS hardware iteration, the DSi XL. The jumbo-sized DSi, which features 4.2 inch screens, increased battery life, and a larger stylus is expected to launch in Japan later this year for ¥20,000 ($220.50). The device's North American and European launch is expected to follow during the first part of 2010.

Nintendo saturated the market with the Wii, so of course their sales are going down dramatically. and lets not kid ourselves, there is a lack of really good games on the Wii, it appeals largely to a market that isnt predictable (a core gamer will always buy a new system, a more casual one is less likely to buy a "Wii 2", or any other new system), which can make you some quick cash but isnt willing to spend any large amount of money on games.

Thank goodness, here I was worrying that developers would all follow suit and start releasing casual games on a bi-weekly basis. With the Wii sales finally shrinking away (hopefully all the way to 0) maybe we can see the end of 'casual games' aka shovelware

Nintendo forgot one thing, video game technology should always go forward, not back or to the sides, forwards, always.

They market it towards gamers who jump like hysterical lunatics with the entire family when playing Wii Sports I Want To Be A Petz HERO. Hopefully they don't exist. For example that stupid ass ps3 commercial with the girl who thinks uncharted 2 is a movie at least shows off the ps3s power. What do wii commercials consist of to the average consumer? 2 asian guys coming into people houses, saying we would like to play, followed by the family jumping around looking like complete idiots with thier new white box.

to be honest this is not suprising, there are a few (and i mean a few) good games on the Wii and the casual stuff was fun for a while but it was never going to have a chance with the 360 and ps3. Ive never understood though why most developers insist on making crappy littlle casual games with rubbish graphics when theres so many possibilities with the wii to make a great game and a unique experience you wont get on any other console such as Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy. Red Steel was a brilliant brilliant idea for the Wii too, just didnt get implemeted very well. This being said, I will never get rid of my Wii.

Im glad, it seems Nintendo have sold out to the hardcore gamer, and stuck to there 'family image'. But it seems to have bit them on the ass from reading this. Hopefully now we'll get some good games for the Wii, and not another Wii fit...

So they're finally running short of console ignorant casuals to pedal last generation hardware to.... had to happen eventually. When they refuse to sell games like Fatal Frame outside Japan then they deserve everything they get, a great franchise with a well deserved reputation and the two biggest markets (US and Europe) don't get a chance to play it. Nintendo set out from the start to ignore the mainstream games market and now they have to pay for it.

With a lack of great games in the past year and massive amounts of shovel-ware, I don't know why they're pushing to make a new console next year cause that idea right now seems pretty stupid considering that Sony and Micro$oft are almost in the process of making a new console, Just wait it out Nintendo for a couple of years and quit re-releasing the DS every damn year cause I'm still happy with my DS Lite.

This isn't surprising to me in the least. Given that it has been 2 years since it's launch and the fact that the Wii sold a phenomenal amount during the initial 12 months, tells me that software sales should be signalling whether it has continued success, not hardware.

For some, the Wii just isn't the console they want/wanted. I'm glad that Nintendo wasn't dead when this last generation war started and people counted them out. But what they sell as the Wii and the games/gameplay that it entails, doesn't appeal to me. The pricing didn't and a price break was long overdue. And Nintendo's other strategies of release a new color SKU with no technical upgrades was always a minus. Yes, I believe the high speed Nintendo has hit a wall with the limits of Wii sales (saturated market) and few incentives for the remaining populus in recessive times who want their jobs 1st and HD 2nd (loosely stated for effect).

@ shoelaces... i can think of better action games than zelda that have better story, better graphics, more depth, way more advanced fighting system. so i dont get why? I can understand why u like mario tho, it had an awesome gravity field system to jump from planet to planet i guess that was pretty fun.

to me, this all seemed obvious. but a new ds already is not only dubious due to timing (ahem, x-mas, cough), but corporate tax the sheep policy we see all too much in all things economic (ahem, guitar hero/halo, cough).

@irilthor im not used to much because I continue to like Zelda and Mario? yeah that makes sense... sorry buddy but if you dont like Zelda thats your problem. I like Zelda amongst many other games. Many different games. I mostly play 360 and ps3 and I have several games in other genres that I enjoy. Liking Zelda doesnt require sticking your head in a hole and ignoring all the other great new games we have. there's nothing wrong with apreciating a zelda game. and even though theyre always similar, theyre always very different in some way. always. at least since snes. Zelda 2 had some side scrolling buuuut yeah i dont know nes details well. but anyway, every zelda since snes had a major change in each one but the whole awesome foundation stayed intact. sorry this is so long but im just trying to explain why zelda is good... which is kinda weird...

I almost think I should buy this console because it is cheap but now I prefer PS3 even though it is a bit more expensive because there are a plenty of great games that it is not available in this console like GTA IV, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Oblivion and many other great games just like what I said.

i dont get why people like mario and zelda that much.. i beat those game because there was such a huge hype, but.. i think most of these gamers arent used to much if they keep liking zelda and mario, i mean cmon... everytime the same goddamn story, both of them princess is kidnapped and needs rescueing, The same story sinds the SNES for crying out loud. only this time its in space or w/e :P its like playing remakes over and over of the same games. But the wii does have some GOOD serious games tho, think about: Madworld / Manhunt 2 (uncensored version) / The Conduit / Tenchu / Deadly Creatures / No More Heroes / Disaster day of crisis / Metroid Prime 3 Now those are the games u should play it for.. Alltho its nothing compared to the dozens of serious games the others offer XD

They need to either start developing Wii 2 or make some seriously good games in the next year or two, otherwise the downhill trend will quickly turn into a cliff.

The wii is essentially based on a gimmic, the motion control which is interesting, but in the long run isn't enough. its games don't have the depth and power that the other systems do. though graphics aren't everything, they really add to the atmosphere of a game and the wii has none of that. the games out for it just dont seem to be appealing to serious gamers or at least gamers who like deep storylines and mature themes along with kick ass graphics. i dont know of any really serious games out for the wii and it really seems to just cater to mini game fans and old people in nursing homes hah. there is almost no competitive online play compared to the 360 ps3, or pc and i think soon nintendo will realize that they need a new system, and fast. and btw now that ps3 and 360 are coming out with motion control add-on's for their systems, the wii is pretty much going to be obsolete

wii sucks. imagine a new zelda in ps3/360 rate graphics. that is what u could have had. theres only a few reasons to get a wii and if they arent going to put enough effort into developing games (like a decent super smash, comeon brawl sucks its nothing more then a few lame characters added) then they will not go anywhere after everyone realises it sucks.

The problem for the Wii was getting caught up in all the short term and forgetting that when casual gamers buy a console, they use it (and pursue the hobby) casually. For the most part, those that would consider themselves to be true gamers have moved beyond the limited library. But the first step to fixing this problem is knowing it exists, which it sounds like Nintendo has come to see. I hope they bounce back

It's the truth whether people like it or not, Wii appeals to kids but kids are the biggest change-ups of any customer. All it takes is for one kid to bring a bunch of others to his or her house to play PS3/360 and kids automatically will think the Wii is crap. Sorry but when it comes to game characters, Nathan Drake, Marcus Fenix, Master Chief, Altaïr, Nariko, Commander Shepard and Sackboy are a lot cooler than Link, Mario and Samus.
