Super Mario World takes off on VC

Portly plumber's SNES debut looms large on the Wii Shop Channel; Gain Ground and Vigilante also new to service.

A new round of games has appeared on the Virtual Console today, headed up by one of GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time. The downloadable game service is currently playing host to the Super Nintendo launch title Super Mario World, the Sega Genesis edition of Gain Ground, and the TurboGrafx-16 beat-'em-up Vigilante.

While Mario had been "super" since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System, it wasn't until his SNES debut that he actually donned a cape suiting the moniker. Super Mario World also marked the debut of Yoshi, Mario's loyal dinosaurian steed and a voracious devourer of evil creatures. Super Mario World is available for 800 Wii Points ($8) and is rated E for Everyone.

Originally scheduled for release on the Virtual Console last week, Gain Ground is a port of an arcade top-down shooter. Players take on the role of combatants on a virtual reality sim gone haywire, rescuing other humans and attempting to bring the system down from the inside. Gain Ground is available for 800 Wii points ($8) and is rated E for Everyone.

The final Virtual Console release of the week, Vigilante is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up that puts players in the role of a New Yorker looking to take justice into his own hands after a gang kidnaps his girlfriend, Madonna. The game was originally developed for the arcades by Irem, makers of the previous Virtual Console releases R-Type and R-Type III. Vigilante will cost gamers 600 Wii points ($6) and is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older.

At first I thought they meant Vigilante 8. A great game if you haven't tried it yet. I wonder if they gonna put Battletoads on the VC

Now nintendo is on their game, LttP, MK64 and now this. I am gonna buy 2000 points and my first act will be LttP and Super Mario World, 2 classic games. I bought a lot of crappy virtual console games just because i could which was kinda dumb.

Nobody is mentioning Gain Ground as a good release. I had this for my Genesis and it was one of those sleeper hits. Good game play and a massive challenge (once your favorite character dies, they die for good.......use them wisely). Good to get, especially if you have never played it. BTW, SMW is one of the greatest platform games EVER!

As much as I've been clamoring for Donkey Kong Country, I can't argue with Super Mario World. Quite possibly the best in a great series. @FiestaUnicorn: Color A Dinosaur, LOL! Wall Street Kid FTW, dude.

AvIdGaMeR444: "What many people don't seem to realize is that when Nintendo puts up their VC games, those said games have to be tested again to make sure there are no bugs in the emulation. Nintendo has to pay their testers, therefore VC games are costing as much as they are. The process is not as simplistic as just throwing a game for VC for download. It still takes a bit of time for Nintendo...so you are paying for convenience, the cost of testing the game for emulation, and time. When you consider all this, VC games are a bargain! " That is by far the smartest thing I have read in days on Gamespot articles. It explains the price so clearly, you get my applause sir. Anyways, great they have a classic that's withstood time on there. I really want my Super Mario RPG: Quest for the Seven Stars sometime soon!

I remember playing Vigilante in the arcade, that's why I bought it for the TG-16 since it was "arcade perfect". However it was so-so back them, I don't know think that it has held up today.

Muzykmann "Man... why is it every time Ninty releases another great classic game, we get bombarded with people **** and moaning?" -------- Because unfortunately, some people just aren't happy unless they're miserable. They need something to complain about. If Ninty releases their top titles on the VC, they're accused of whoring their games in an effort to milk cash from us. If they don't release those titles, they'll be blasted for ignoring their top franchises/titles, and giving out obscure, inferior games instead. Either way, people have some reason to flame the company... it's win-win for them. Not that it matters. I'm happy to enjoy the 5-star titles, secure in the knowledge that some folks have no taste when it comes to quality.

Man... why is it every time Ninty releases another great classic game, we get bombarded with people **** and moaning? hazuki : "....Reggie promised super mario world for americas wii launch. Not 4 months after." -the Regginator promised that a long LONG time ago, and Ninty made it perfectly clear that it was going to be releasing these titles slowly WEEKS before release. You're dwelling on something that was said months before the release. Point being, you were alerted to the change before the purchase, so nobody was tricked or fooled into the buy. Andy639_basic: "Why is Nintendo making all these releases of games that they've re-released in the past five years ... Makes no sense to me. " -Because the games that were worth re-releasing are the best of the best, and therefore the FIRST to be released on the VC. Not everyone bought the re-released versions, and those people deserve those A list titles. And some people will buy the newest release ANYWAY, because the convenience of having all those titles on one pretty little box is worth a few $. Think it over again, cause it makes PERFECT sense to me. Keep up the good work Ninty. Pay no attention to the whiners.

This is proof that Nintendo is conspiring against me... they want my money.. .and they have a good shot at getting it. I have it for the SNES but I don't have my SNES with me and haven't set it up if I do. For the GBA the resolution is the same but the screen is much smaller. And you're still paying twice the cost.

I'd buy SMW in a heartbeat--if it wasn't already on GBA. Why is Nintendo making all these releases of games that they've re-released in the past five years (Super Mario World, Zelda, LTTP, Mario 64,) when they could be releasing games that haven't seen the light of day in decades (like Kid Icarus) or at least since the early ninties (like Earthbound)?? Makes no sense to me.
