Study: Minorities underrepresented in games

USC researcher surveys 150 best-selling games, finds zero Hispanic or Native American protagonists; women, children, and the elderly also disproportionately rare.

Recent years have seen the explosive growth of games into previously untapped demographics. And while publishers have pursued these new markets by focusing on accessibility and games in nontraditional genres, they're missing an opportunity to open the field up even further, according to one University of Southern California researcher.

Black characters are underrepresented outside the sports genre, with Williams saying games often portray them as
Black characters are underrepresented outside the sports genre, with Williams saying games often portray them as "gangsters and street people."

A study published last month in the journal New Media & Society surveyed the 150 best-selling games from March 2005 through February 2006 (which accounted for more than 95 percent of game sales over that span) and tallied up the race, gender, and ages of the characters within. The study, conducted by Dmitri Williams, an assistant professor at USC's Annenberg School for Communication, found that adults, whites, and men are disproportionately represented in games, to the detriment of nearly all other demographics.

"The results show a systematic overrepresentation of males, white and adults and a systematic underrepresentation of females, Hispanics, Native Americans, children and the elderly," Williams concluded.

As might have been expected, men were grossly overrepresented in games. While they make up slightly more than half the US population, men account for more than 85 percent of game characters. As far as age groups go, adults were overrepresented (nearly 87 percent of game characters compared to 59 percent of the US population), at the expense of children (less than 4 percent of game characters but 21 percent of the country) and the elderly (less than 2 percent in games, but more than 12 percent of the population).

The study also found that white people make up about 80 percent of game characters, compared to 75 percent of the US population. Asian/Pacific populations were the only other race category to be overrepresented (5 percent in games compared to 4 percent in the US), with Hispanics and Native Americans both significantly underrepresented.

Hispanics make up less than 3 percent of game characters, but more than 12 percent of the population, while Native Americans represent less than 1 percent of the country and make up less than 0.1 percent of game characters. On top of that, the two groups appeared solely as supporting characters in games, with the researchers recording no Hispanic or Native American protagonists in their study.

Williams said the underrepresentation could be interpreted by players as a message that the missing minorities are "relatively unimportant and powerless compared to more heavily present groups." He went on to express concern that Latinos and other groups could be turned off to games by their lack of representation, and "subsequently, they may have less interest in technology and its opportunities for class advancement. Ironically, they would be less likely to become game makers themselves, helping to perpetuate the cycle."

Interestingly, the breakdown of gender and race representation in games closely mirrors that of US game developers as a whole, with one exception. Williams said black characters are overrepresented compared to the number of black developers in the workforce.

Portrayals of Native Americans are rare in games. Prey and Brave have come out since the study was conducted, but examples are still few and far between.
Portrayals of Native Americans are rare in games. Prey and Brave have come out since the study was conducted, but examples are still few and far between.

The researchers looked at the numbers for player-controlled characters, as well as supporting characters, and weighted the results according to sales. As explained in the article, "when the most popular game (Madden 06) sells over 6 million copies and the least popular (game #150 in the present study's sampling frame, BeyBlade) 15,000 copies, it is safe to assume that one game will be played significantly more than another. Thus, if the goal is to measure what the public is actually consuming, content from the two should not be given equal weight in the analysis."

There are other factors acknowledged by Williams that should be taken into account. The researchers only considered human characters in compiling their numbers. Data was obtained for quasihuman and nonhuman characters as well, but not incorporated in the paper on age, race, and gender portrayal. The popularity of sports games influenced the survey's gender results, as there are an abundance of games like Madden NFL and the WWE SmackDown titles, but no games for women's professional sports.

Finally, Williams said there was a "striking similarity" between his findings and similar analyses performed on television programs. He suggested that Latinos and Native Americans are systematically underrepresented in many forms of media and expressed surprise that the situation persists despite the growing Latino population in the country.

Williams told GameSpot that he has another article that will soon be published looking at body shapes of game characters versus the body shapes of real people. He also previously studied the amount of profanity in games (and determined there wasn't a whole lot of it).

Men overrepresented in games? It's just a reflection of gamers. Gamers as a whole are mostly male. So what's the big deal? Develpers are catering to their demographics. Plain and simple.

In most of the Sims games you can pick your color and also your sex at the beginning of the game. In Urbz for GBA/DS we had all types as game characters - including a guy in a wheelchair. In Harvest Moon Rune Factory II you start off as a young male, marry, eventually disappear and become your child (either male or female) who must struggle on to find dear old dad. They also have a mix of young and old as well as children. Wonder if they got counted.

Dunno if this has already been said, but wasn't the protagonist in Prey a Native American? I thought that was a fairly major part of that game...

Interesting study, although I must say I was amused by the elderly and children part, it seems silly somehow. I agree with the rest, I think. Curious to see that study about body shapes too.

That's why they are MINORITIES...they represent a MINORITY of the population and hence, a MINORITY of characters in the media...if 20% of the population is Martian, than wouldn't 20% of characters in entertainment being Martian make sense??? Yeah, I wanna watch movies and play games focused on the life and adventures of a 90 year old man...

I completely agree. Even Sheva in RE5 is a light, coffee brown instead of dark skinned. She is supposed to have been an African native for Christ's sake! It is almost as if Capcom thought that a genuine native African skin tone would have a negative affect on the character. I find it offensive and I'm not even dark skinned!

i actually wouldn't mind seeing more black people in games, and may I add - A BLACK PERSON WHO IS NOT SOME GANGSTER!!! Can we PLEASE get a smart and intelligent black person in a game. Makes me feel like the industry is implying that all black people are ghetto, and ignorant. :(

Well obviously adult males are represented games a whole lot more because that's the target audience of these games! I don't want my team in madden to be full of old elderly people! Also, parental and conservative groups would be all angry if instead of "adults", children went around killing aliens (say if master chief was some 5 year old) or zombies. They would just raise some BS about how it promotes "child soldiers".

@PUNKDAVE, actually im very inclined to agree with you on the handicaped/disabled people... i think there should be a few more of them as important characters in the games, i mean other than Joker from Mass Effect. a nice, positive point.

And the problem is what? I mean it's a good point, but I don't see it changing anytime in the future; although I'd like to see a Mexican protagonist or a African American or hell even Middle Eastern (Nod to Nico Bellic)

The title says it all. Minorities are underrepresented in games because they are the minority. I'm more concerned about disabled people not being represented in games. Other than the NPC "Joker" from Mass Effect, no other characters come to mind. And these are the people who probably need idols more than any of us.

Is this really an issue? Did GameSpot at least get paid for putting up such an article? It really has "what the heck is this thing out of the blue" type vibe to it. Well then how about Middle Eastern people huh? How about Indians, how about every race on the planet? After the "controversy" around RE 5 and them having Africans (I never read the "controversy so I don't know what was the problem mentioned) what else do they expect? Ok this issue is actually too long for a post on a GameSpot blog, so I'll just say that they should support great videogames with money and TV support if they want things to change.

This is probably conducted by someone who doesn't play games either. I'm pretty sure most of the characters that we play in games are either superhuman, mythical, mutated or just not real. So does that mean we aren't representing that portion of the populace either?

Pretty damn weak survey. In many games, the player determines the race and gender. And what's this business of stripping out non-human characters? Helloooooo! Alien/fantasy races have been used as a proxy for real life race relations for decades (maybe centuries) - but you just write it off? The conclusion strikes me as silly, too. If that were true, wouldn't Japanese games have mostly Asians in it? There are other factors, too. If you put children in a violent game, they are liable to get themselves blown up along with most of the other NPCs in the game. You show a 5 year old getting gibbed and your game is going to get banned, regardless of the situtation and regardless of any constitutional rights. That said, we could definitely use more variety in main characters. Letting us change what the main character looks like seems best to me - though I don't know if it will satisfy this researcher. P.S. wiidsduelpack, the research was done in California.

That is a worthless study. Of course, it has to come from SC. South Carolina, the state that has committed the most racist and discriminitary acts of the nation. A state that still has their Confederate flag in their Congress. If there are basically no Hispanics or Latinos, it is because they don't buy nearly as much as an American or Japanese. Not to say that Latin American countries are underdeveloped and their really developing countries or lower. Its all economical.

well 2 games that have native american protagonist...prey..and turok? soooo...F**K this survey maybe? i bet if i even got to thinking i could find several more...and if you want a Hispanic or native American protagonist f**King play mass effect or some game that has a character creation and MAKE ONE!!! the reason there aren't many of those two groups as a main character is because it well sorry im not racist...is just plain dumb...make master chief native American and well..it just doeskin work! im sorry..it just doesn't but make duke Nukem turok? and it doesn't work either so a game is not being racist or undermining the minorities if there is no native Americans or Hispanics it is just being a good game! simple... P.s i could have made this much better but its like 11:20 or something here and im tired -.-

Pineapple_Head I'll answer these in order. I'm not actually from the EU. Also, too much pride is a sin (while I'm not a christian, I believe they've got that one right) and you guys definitely have too much. That war was just. Genocide and control of Europe is a bigger deal (please I mean no offense to those affected by 9/11) than two buildings being knocked down. Millions died in CC's compared to thousands in 9/11.

Message 2 of 2 supermike6 also said and blah, blah: "So, in conclusion, americans created those standards for themselves" @supermike6 We didn't entirely create these standards. Half of this was due to, I guess, on how the world viewed us at a certain point back then. supermike6: "and everybody dislikes them because they don't live up to those standards while americans just say things like there's a "Hate America trend"" @supermike6 The question was whether or not Rontor's and David_Kiffin's anti-American comments were justified because of one USC professor. Jealousy (probably passed down from generations) and hatred seem to have cloud their judgment when posting a comment about a research study. It seems to be more rampant that comments like these come from Europe more often because their obnoxious attitude towards the U.S. seems pretty casual. It is a trend and I'm sick of it.

You americans hold yourselves to a high standard and claim you're better than everyone just because you're country is called america." @supermike6 It doesn't seem you guys in the E.U. really hold us to high standard anymore. Also doesn't every country in the world have some pride in itself? supermike6 also said: "Look at how many WWII movies/games are made by americans, the people who decided to wait for it to come into their backyard before they even batted an eyelid." @supermike6 Okay so a pacifist U.S. wasn't what the world wanted then and a pacifist U.S. is something the world wants now? You're making my head all spinny! Oh yeah, uh, we did send aid to the U.K. about eight to nine months before we got involved. We did do an oil embargo against Japan (since we supplied about 80% of their oil) . Peaceful acts by the U.S. which led to the Axis attacking us.

oh my supermike6 you are so full of false information it is beyond impossible to educate you you bring up ww2, ok let us go there shall we, when ww2 started America was STILL reeling from the great depression, one of the worst economic periods in the history of the world, and did not want to plunge itself into a massive war, when they felt they could never support it, however Japan made that decision for us, but let us not start a history lesson here in a gaming article about racial relations/ participation in games you also said that Americans have a sense of entitlement, while this is true for many of us, I do not believe it is the majority or even close to it, many of us KNOW the price of our country's signifigance, I do believe we are a great nation one of the greatest but not b/c we are entitled to it, or b/c we are above others but b/c we have earned it, a lot of it in some not so nice ways, but it was paid for with blood and that is why so many of us love our nation, not for some convoluted sense of "righteousness" or worthiness but out of our accomplishments

@DarthMan It's not just because of the "War on Terror", it's because of people like you, who hype up their country. Also, just because two Taliban "cowards" hijacked a plane does not mean you should wage war on their country. "An americans are the highest, we have lead almost everything to this point." The fact that you got two thumbs up while spouting nonsense like this proves my point quite well.

the same thing could probably be said of main characters in television shows and hollywood movies. people who create the medium in question use what they are familiar with (themselves, family, friends) to create their characters, generally speaking. shows/games made by white primarily use white people, black people often use black people, asians use asians, etc. how surprising.....o wait. its entertainment, it doesnt need to be 100% politically correct, just have fun with it.

@Simple_malk I don't think it's intentional, either. But really, who lives in a city and isn't around minorities? Is it that big of a stretch to introduce a realistic environment? Television does much better these days.

So what? Obviously it isn't intentional to be discriminatory. So what about the millions of Japanese anime style characters are those white or asian? What race was Master Chief? Seriously I'm getting so sick of this attitude that you're owed something based on the color of your skin. So was Shakespeare a racist because most of his characters were white? Well he might of been but that's irrelevant because art is up to the producer as long as they aren't intentionally using overtly bad stereotypes then it's their own choice.

A lot of this also boils down to money in the past. Rendering different face types and skin isn't necessarily cheap. A lot of newer games coming out are better at showing race and putting more diversity in games.
