Streaming Video on the Console

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are very capable machines. Learn how to take advantage of them to play videos, music, and more from your computer.

The PlayStation 3 comes with a Blu-ray player, a Web browser, a music player, a photo viewer, and plenty of other features that remind us that it's no mere PlayStation 2. The Xbox 360, sans Blu-ray and Web browsing, has fewer multimedia options, but players seem to get by with Netflix streaming and Xbox Live online features. However, for all their robustness, the consoles are rather unrefined when it comes to video support. The Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 have their quirks when it comes to playing various video codecs and container files. Both consoles can play videos, but not all video files are compatible out of the box. Videos that play easily on the PC or Mac go unsupported on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It's also not as easy to find, download, and install a codec on the console as it is on the PC. New codecs might come bundled with new firmware updates or as downloadable content, but they don't come often enough to count as reliable support.

Developers recognized this video compatibility problem and created programs such as TVersity, XBMC, PS3 Media Server, and many more free and not-so-free programs to help console owners play videos on their systems. All of these programs are able to transcode video on the fly so, at least in theory, you won't have any problems with video compatibility. PS3 Media Server is the best pure video player of the bunch, whereas the others offer some unique features worth exploring. TVersity, a Windows-based program, lets users stream video content to just about any device, anywhere, and has a lot of preloaded video streams from the Internet that make it easy for novices to get started. XBMC acts more as a dedicated media viewer, with its own onscreen graphical user interface, and can stream video content as well. All of these programs require a computer and a home network to run. You might want to consider upgrading your processor if you want to transcode high-definition videos.

TVersity

Streams It'll go anywhere Transcoding

TVersity lets you take your videos and streams with you anywhere you can access the Internet, but we were content to find out how well it works in the confines of a home network for our console testing. The program will easily feed consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, other PCs, network-enabled video devices such as Roku boxes, DirecTV receivers, the Sony PSP, and even the iPhone. It even recognizes which devices are hooked up and scales the video content up or down according to the device being used. In addition to serving files from your hard drive, TVersity can port in streams from YouTube, NPR, and many other Web sites. A single, moderately powerful PC can feed multiple devices across the home simultaneously. Computer horsepower comes into play when you have to transcode large, high-quality files quickly.

Provided that you have a console and a Windows-based PC, TVersity makes streaming video dead simple. It was easy to install and configure on our test PC. We pointed the program at our video, music, and pictures folders, and then we selected a few online video streams that the TVersity interface had preloaded. The streams featured new content from various Web sites, including HD feeds and old TV shows such as MacGyver and the original Star Trek. Our PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 both found their new networked friend without any extra effort. On the PlayStation 3, the TVersity server icon appeared in all of the media-related crossbar selections, including videos, music, and photos. We didn't encounter any problems when we had our PS3 connected to our network with a wired cable, but switching to Wi-Fi brought about a 7351 DLNA error that we safely ignored to no ill effect. We saw similar kinds of errors from time to time, but rebooting the console or simply pressing "next" seemed to remedy the issue. The Xbox 360 identified our TVersity server just as quickly as the PS3 and had zero hiccups connecting to it.

PS3's Video Layout Xbox 360's Video Layout MacGyver! PS3 TVersity Xbox 360 TVersity

Nearly all of the video files that we threw at the PS3 worked with TVersity, and the Xbox 360 worked just as well after downloading a codec pack through Xbox Live. The program automatically transcoded files that normally wouldn't function on either of the consoles, turning them into viewable videos. The vast majority of content worked, although we encountered issues with high-bit-rate MKV files. You will have to tweak the TVersity settings to solve some rare video-incompatibility problems, so expect to spend some time on Google and in the TVersity settings menu to get everything running just right. Both consoles had issues with fast-forwarding and rewinding on a few files, but we had great success with the PS3's scene-search feature on most videos. High-definition feeds and videos looked great, although they didn't work well via 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. It's really more of a wireless bandwidth issue than any fault of the program. The videos played perfectly after we switched to a wired network.

There are many alternatives outside of the three programs that we discuss here. Red Kawa's Media Center X and Winamp both have free offerings. Red Kawa has two flavors of Media Center X, one for the Wii and another for the PS3. Winamp's gotten more powerful over the years and is capable of broadcasting SHOUTcast streams. You can try out MythTV if you're feeling adventurous on the Linux side. MythTV is fairly popular, but it's mainly known for its DVR capabilities. On the pay side of the spectrum, you can find Twonky, Nero MediaHome, Rivet, and Connect360. They cost between $15 and $40, so they won't set you back too much. Most of them offer transcoding support and have friendly-looking interfaces that should make them easy to use. It's also great to have technical support when problems crop up.

Do you use your console to watch videos? What do you watch and how do you watch them?

XBMC

XBMC YouTube Plugin More media? Settings

XBMC, formerly known as Xbox Media Center, acts as both a front- and back-end media center program. That means it can serve content to devices such as your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 console, and it can also play content directly on your TV if you have your Windows/OSX/Linux/AppleTV machine installed with XBMC connected to your TV. The program has a slick graphical user interface that's easy to use while sitting on the couch. XBMC isn't robust enough to feed such devices as the iPhone, but it has its niche if you need the GUI and media-server capability for a home theater PC. XBMC is open source and has become so popular that it has a couple of spin-off programs such as Plex, Boxee, and MediaPortal.

Like TVersity, XBMC transcodes and streams both Internet and local video content. TVersity provides you with many Internet streams to choose from right out of the installation, but you'll have to go out and hunt for content with XBMC. You'll need to track down plugins and scripts to import Internet based content. Adding YouTube content required some work. We first had to perform a few Web searches to find the proper scripts, and then we had to manually place the files into the proper directory for XBMC to recognize the feed. Overall, the whole process isn't particularly friendly from start to end, but the added functionality is worth the effort.

You'll have to jump over a few hurdles to install XBMC, but it's not difficult. You'll need to keep your video-card drivers up to date and keep an eye on your firewall exceptions for a smooth installation. (The instruction manual will tell you that too, but we discovered that for ourselves when we tried to man through the initial installation without reading the instructions first.) Both consoles detected XBMC with no trouble after we got the program installed, and we were able to access files in exactly the same manner as we did with TVersity. File playback worked fine with just about all of the MPEG, AVI, WMV, and MOV files we tried. As with our TVersity experience, high-resolution MKVs didn't work out of the box. Again, you're going to have to Google up solutions and fiddle with settings to make the difficult files play properly. All of the other basic functions, as well as music and image playback, worked perfectly.

XBMC gets a leg up on the other programs by providing scripting and plugin support, though plugins do take work to find and install. If you're persistent enough, you'll be rewarded with access to all kinds of content, games, and expanded functionality. Check out sites such as XBMCZone, XBMC Add-Ons at Google Code, and the currently offline XBMCScripts for the goods. Of course, you will inevitably have to check out the official XMBC forums for help, and to keep abreast of new developments in the community.

PS3 Media Server

PS3 only Add those files Where the magic happens

If you have videos, PS3 Media Server can probably play them. All of them. You won't find a couch-friendly user interface, streaming support for all sorts of nonconsole devices, or any other ancillary features that have nothing to do with playing videos on your PlayStation 3. The only bit of extravagance the developers managed to add was support for multiple operating systems. PS3 Media Server runs on Windows, OSX, and Linux. The program also takes advantage of multicore CPUs for transcoding, although the feature is usable only by Windows users at the moment.

Setup and installation couldn't be any easier. Outside of clicking on the install file, we didn't have to do much. Adding media was as simple as pointing the program at a folder on our hard drive. The lightweight interface uses very little in terms of system resources (although you might want to keep an eye on RAM usage once the program starts transcoding). Adding shared folders proved as easy as hitting the plus button.

As the name suggests, the software works only with the PlayStation 3. (We did get media files to show up on the Xbox 360, but they didn't play properly.) We encountered no issues at all in getting the program to work with our PS3. Every video we threw at the program worked properly, including the gigantic MKVs that bogged down TVersity and XBMC. Like the other programs, there are probably some formats that the program can't handle, but PS3 Media Server offered the best video compatibility from the default installation.

Conclusion

We enjoyed using every one of the programs that we discussed in this feature. However, we found that none of them are bulletproof. Expect to encounter any number of random network issues and the occasional crash. Making so many different devices play nice with each other and have them support a bazillion file formats is very difficult, and, frankly, we're still impressed with the fact that all of these programs are free (feel free to donate though). Each program has its strengths, and when it comes down to it, you're not really limited to running only one of the programs. We actually ended up running all three of them at the same time for maximum functionality.

Do you use your console to watch videos? What do you watch and how do you watch them?

The 360 has a media center extender built in. You don't need additional software if you're using a media center PC and a 360. I use it to watch recorded TV in HD streamed over my network.

XBMC is the way to go for the 360 or the Xbox 1. I am going to give TVersity a try but for years i have used t XBMC with not many problems and most bugs have been fixed.

Sorry, but I can't agree that TVersity is dead simple as you tell us! I still have 2 main problems streaming online feeds (asx) from TVersity to XBOX360 (streaming music is NO problem): I get: - in TVersity decoding 0% OR - on the 360 after a few seconds: connection lost AND AFTER THIS another try: - can't play content as it is not supported BUT: - my firewall (to be sure) is off (and streaming online music is no problem) - all content can be played on my pc - I have ffshow codecs installed Anyone any tips?

@ aerodynamicadie, As my earlier posts show, I definitely don't consider myself a fanboy. The way I see it, PS3 has better multimedia features, 360 has more quality games. I know fanboys are annoying, but... ...I can't agree with your whole "hypocrites" angle. Comparing PS2 vs XBOX is nothing close to comparing PS3 vs 360. Sure, the fact that PS2 and 360 both have more quality games than their counterparts stands. I agree with you 100% there. The problem is, the PS2 has absolute orders of magnitude more games than the XBOX does/did. We're talking 125 million all-time worldwide installed-base in terms of consoles sold for PS2, compared to just 24 million for XBOX. FIVE TIMES THE SALES! And as I already said, there were TONS more games. The PS2 was the most wildly successful game system of all time, by a mile, until the Wii arrived. Now hey, the XBOX had the hard drive thing going for it. It had Halo. It was great. I liked it. But it was released too late. Sony had all the 3rd-party support. The Wii is selling twice what the PS3 is right now. Think about that: Wii is only selling twice what the PS3 has sold, and everyone rants and raves about how dominant the Wii is. PS2 beat XBOX by FIVE times! And the PS3 vs. 360 is even closer: 20 million vs. 28 million. Now I know units sold does not equal games, but the discrepancy with the number of quality games was clearly MUCH higher in the case of PS2 vs. XBOX than it is for PS3 vs. 360. 360 definitely has more good games. It does. But you're comparing a nuclear missile strike to a pimpslap. You're not a fanboy. I realize that. But it's still not a fair comparison.

I just use Nero Mediahome 4 and use mkv2vob to convert any of my HD movies usually in .mkv (matroska file format) and stream it to my PS3 via ethernet with no lag, used to use the PS3 wifi but seems that PS3 wifi is slow as hell compared to ethernet, and eerything plays smooth and cool.

Or, alternatively, buy a Popcorn Hour A110 which streams HD footage, as well as any other format you can get your hands on, flawlessly. Hell, you can even stick a Sata HD in there and have movies loaded onto that instead. Gave up on my 360 when it just refused to play half my files, wont even play subs in the same folder. PH will play x264, ISOs, MPEG4, WMV as well as the usual array of DIVXs, XVIDs and other AVIs. You can even watch youtube and a load of other internet based shows from it, inc Apple Trailers. So people, if your interested enough to read the article enough, scrap both machines for movie watching and check out the Popcorn Hour A110. Bad name, Amazing machine.

I do not like how once upon a time PLAYSTATION owners spat on the original Xbox for the mere fact that it was "too big" even though it out-did the PS2 on features. Now the Sony console has features worth looking at and people are muttering the words of "PS3 is better and it's got blu-ray and it streams" To answer your question am I a fan-boy? Some would say yes and I will say no NO, because I buy the console that I enjoy playing the most and that happens to be 360. I do not have a bias towards any company or brand, all I ask is to be impressed. I do not have a problem with Sony. All I wish to say is that there are too many Playstation fans who are hypocrites (FACT). Comments I keep hearing from friends are "I don’t like the 360 on the basis that: the controller is too heavy, the buttons are different, it's white and it doesn't have Sony on it." These biased people care about features NOW and moan when the opposition mentions the massive game selection of the 360. I remember when people said they wouldn’t buy the original Xbox because of the poor selection. When did features matter in that case? HYPOCRITES I SAY! Features matter not between which console to select anymore because people buy them for either novelty, for their branding, because of who has the better advertising/marketing team or simply for their own egos.

i only tried tversity and when streaming mkv files it's smoother on the 360 than on the ps3. for the best video and audio quality use mkv2vob. convert mkv files to mp4 or vob and play it directly on the ps3. that way you can get the best picture possible AND 5.1 audio as well. sorry, a little off topic there. :)

@ vandaman123, My 60GB PS3 was getting very full for awhile too. 60GB on a PS3 is deceptively little space, since so much room gets gobbled up by game data. I'd recommend hopping over to newegg.com and grabbing yourself a PS3-compatible drive for under $100... ...how does 320GB for $89.99 sound? :) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280

BTW, to try to supplement the article a little... I myself haven't tried any programs you have to pay for because, well, why should I, if I'm happy enough with the free ones. But as for the free ones, I got some recommendations/finer points... Media Player 11 and XBMC are fine and servicable. However, MP11 doesn't transcode (at least last time I checked), and XBMC is the least user-friendly of the bunch. If you have a 360, TVersity is the clear choice, no matter what. If we're talking PS3, it could still be TVersity, or it could be PS3MediaServer. I've tried to lay out the pros & cons below, from my experience: TVersity: +Transcodes efficiently (rarely produces choppiness while streaming) +Slightly cleaner interface +Determines automatically if transcoding is required -Automatic transcoding decisions aren't 100% accurate -Can't transcode quite as wide a variety of content -Not many options to customize transcoding PS3MediaServer: +Can transcode nearly anything +Streaming of as-is content seems a bit snappier +Tons of transcoding customization options -Transcoding buffers can get huge -Transcoded video seems a bit choppier than on TVersity, especially on slower networks Overall, I'd recommend TVersity if you have a lower-end PC, if you're using a wireless connection, or both. I'd recommend PS3MediaServer if you have a higher-end PC and you're on a hard line rather than wireless.

streaming movies to the ps3 is alot better then the x360 because of the it can use different formats. Xbox is only limited to wmv and mpeg4 I think. If you have to watch movies, just use a Pc and connect it to the LCD flat screen you have alot more options and alot more programs......Just use windows media center in windows vista or xp and download the K-lite mega codec pack and you can watch any movie you want!

external works on ps3 only if it's formatted as FAT32. If it is formatted as such, all you need is a folder named VIDEO in there and it should work fine. Just be warned that if you have to go through more than 1 subfolder, the ps3 won't recognize it, such as if you have a tv show folder in VIDEO, then in that folder you have the videos devided into series folders, you'll see the folders but the ps3 is going to attempt to recognize those folders as videos and thus not work (ex. won't work if you have "VIDEO\That 70's show\Season_1\Episode_1.avi").

Has anyone tried the "PlayOn Media Server" from Media Mall? It's pretty sweet. Lets you stream Hulu videos, YouTube, ESPN, CBS even Netflix. Works well on the XBox360 and the PS3. I actually paid the $40 cuz I can catch up on all my old tv shows thru Hulu. Pretty damn good quality for streaming flash video too.

I own the 3 systems aswell, i like the fact u can copy via streaming to hdd on ps3, cant do it on xbox, just play the vid, i have an external harddrive but have not tried to plug it into usb on either system, anyone know if it works?? I've got large media library most of which 4 my son but me wife and i love our movies aswell, the layout to the ps3 is better for navigating\organizing but the xbox still does the trick, other than being able to copy, kind of a shame when u have the 120gig elite, ps3 only has 60gig and is getn pretty full,

I'm a PS3 guy but I'm not that impressed with many games yet. I didn't like Warhawk, Resistance, Ratchet, or Heavenly Sword. I own a Wii too, and I haven't been impressed with too many games either. Maybe I'm cynical, but I'm hoping for something new.

AthiestPreacher... VERY well said. I have all 3 systems and I tend to lean toward my Playstation. However, I am very happy with the XBOX. It's a great system. Any hardcore gamer (that has the money of course..I know, recession...) would probably have all 3 systems which I have. I enjoy all 3. I have blu-ray with the Playstation along with all of the media capabilities I'll ever need because I was lucky to purchase the very rare (or just expensive) 60 gig system when it was still in stores. They have their pros and cons just like anything else. Bottom line is they are all great systems in my opinion.

Interesting, but not very secure. You usually need to open ports on your router for this to work. Also this information generally isn't encrypted and just about anyone in range with a compatible device can stream your videos to their system. Just get a USB key and watch files that way. I do, and I never have a problem.

I know a lot of people that bought a ps3 just because of the blue-ray disk player. I for one bought it for just one reason.... to play games. I think thats what makes the Nintendo the weakest yet the best system out there. Although it lacks what both the ps3 and the 360 has (options to play movies), it has what I want (games). What I meant by games is that its strickly just for playing games. Sometimes..... thats all you need.

i have had an xbox 360 for like 3 years now, it is a good machine and allows me to do all I want. I do want a PS3 but the machine doesn't have enough to distinguish itself from the xbox 360, in terms of forking out another £300. (Please dont mention blu ray, yes i know it looks nice, but at £18 a film bite me) What i would say is that with Resistance 2, and the up and coming Kill Zone 2 and God Of War 3, the exclusives are definitely with Sony for the 1st half of the year.

@ -Intellectual- I think you should recheck your statements because last time I checked Warhawk, Ratchet, and resistance were all good games. (I have no idea what HS is). But I understand if you think those games suck because you most likely don't even like the PS3 at all. If Gears2 is so AMAZING like you XBox guys say it is than can you explain to me why it got the same score as Resistance? I mean if Resistance is trash then it should get bad reviews right? Or does it only matter what you think, because that is what it seems like. Before you start bagging on PS3 games get your facts straight, you just sound stupid

ps3 has more EXCLUSIVES easily ...... but most of them are TRASH like Lair, HS, Warhawk, Ratchet, resistance. Feel free to add more to that list.

To be honest i don't use any of these programs as i stream straight from my laptop to my ps3 which is then hooked up to my surround sound system and i have had no problems (unless my friend is using azerus in teh next room grrr) as for the MKV files i found a useful program called MKV2PS3 which converts the files to AVI, VOB or MPEG4. I think having a My Passport helps to as you can link the baby up next to your PS3 and play movies just gotta copy them off the laptop first. This is just another way i spose but it works fine for me :)

The Ps3 is one of the best home entertainment media player IMO and its still one of the best, if not the best, Blu-ray players out in the market today.

The fanboy-ism needs to stop. I own both consoles. I use my PS3 a bit more, but the fact of the matter is I would be quite unhappy not to own both. Though I honestly prefer the PS3's collection of exclusives (Valkyria Chronicles & Uncharted are 2 of my favorite games ever), I think it's pretty clear that the 360 has a stronger library of games overall, especially shooters & RPGs (surprise, surprise). Overall PS3 has these advantages: *Better multimedia functionality (not just Blu-ray either... this is big for me) *Free online *Doesn't break as often 360 has: *A larger library of quality games (this is obviously huge... it's all some people care about) *Better online play (though not free) I could go into more detail, but those points are pretty clear. If you have a problem admitting any of those advantages, for either system, you might want to really ask yourself if you're a fanboy. Because those things are all hard to argue.

having both console, here is my opinion: 360 rock ps3 wait wait wait till he loading is finish and wait wait again till he installation is done and try to find your friend to play but oops, cannot reach them in game so I should use the phone and ask them to play so still wait for that... by the time you are ready to play on ps3, I'm already at level 20 at fallout on my perfect gaming experience of the 360. that's right, perfect GAMING experience.

This article sounds like its saying PS3 is a way better deal than that sh**ty ole' X Box 360. Which is true. Clearly no X box user can say that the X box is better than the PS3 for any intelligent answer. The only answer i always get is "the 360 has better games!!!" But i have yet to hear any other answer. And just like the second guy said. PS3 has Uncharted, Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4(GAME OF THE YEAR), Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, and Killzone 2. Those are just from the top of my head. So.....I laugh at you 360 users hahaha. or should i say 360 LOSERS!?!? OOOHH!!!! SNAP!

For PS3 you can go to any site you want to watch a video on and watch it. Youtube, hulu, NBC.com, fx, and so on all work. We got an INTERNET BROWSER, that's all you need to watch videos. And I also love the browser because I can download movies on my PS3 instead of my comp. now, so I don't have to watch movies on my computer and I can watch it with the whole family on my tv thanks to the PS3. So suck on that
