Star Wars: Episode 7 -- This Is Who Andy Serkis Plays

Serkis will play Supreme Leader Snoke.

The role actor Andy Serkis will play in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens has finally been revealed, at least partially. The official Star Wars website today shared an image of Serkis in motion-capture gear for his character, someone named Supreme Leader Snoke.

It appears this character will be entirely CGI, which isn't strange territory for Serkis, who played fully digital characters like Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

No Caption Provided

Whether or not Snoke is a good guy or a bad guy (or something in between) remains to be seen. But his stern facial expression and the fact that his name is prefaced by "Supreme Leader" makes you think he might be one of the movie's antagonists.

Serkis previously confirmed that he did the voiceover for the first Force Awakens trailer. In this trailer, a voice we now know to be Supreme Leader Snoke said, "There has been an awakening … Have you felt it? The dark side. And the light…"

The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, a couple weeks after DICE's Star Wars: Battlefront debuts on current-generation consoles and PC.

What do you think about Serkis' character? Let us know in the comments below.

"It appears this character will be entirely CGI"

Not even using real actors anymore, it all being done on computers but it makes it look so fake so there really is very little immersion with the story or relation to the characters that was a large part of why episodes 1-3 were so terrible.

Not interested myself but oh well whatever sells tickets I guess. Not like the fat dumbed down working class of today understands what art is anyway corporate media has done it's job well. 20 years from now maybe they will replace movies with 90 minutes of jingling keys and shiny objects

@sol_invictus: "Not even using real actors anymore" You wot m8? Do you know who Andy Serkis is? But seriously if you're worried about CGI there's already been loads of things confirmed which don't involve CGI. They've built X-wings, the millenium falcon and other space ships, there's this video with J.J. Abrams and costumed people in the background and this amazingly intricate one that walks past. There's a video of a big explosion going off and storm troopers getting flung everywhere with stunt mats. The film won't be a CGI glory hole. Andy Serkis and CGI aren't exactly a bad combination anyway, so I wouldn't lose your wig yet. And besides all of the 6 films have some pretty poor acting, especially in the prequels, which I doubt we will see here, because George Lucas isn't casting. R2-D2 is being played by the dwarf that played him in the originals for god's sake, they're going all out to please the purists, yet still your anger boils, its not like they've made frekin Chewbacca CGI like they did in the prequels.

@sol_invictus: If you are into Sci-fi and fantasy especially right now, and you don't like the CGI, then you should really stop watching movies and TV shows in the genre. Stick to books. There isn't one sci-fi/fantasy show or movie out there today that doesn't use it. I will agree that it can be overused, but it's a necessary tool that can be absolutely brilliant in the right hands.

@sol_invictus: "Not even using real actors anymore" Quite the opposite in fact. A lot of the actors they are getting for this kind of stuff are the best of the stage, because the people need to act without a real set or other actors. You're giving great actors far more free range to perform things that were never available to them before simply because... well, nobody is every going to actually be the size of the Hulk, even if the proportions are largely the same.

If you've got a problem with the CG, that's fine, but the amount demanded of these actors is far more than ever before.

@sol_invictus: Actually from what I've read this movie is a making a return to practical effects more than CGI. No surprise that Andy Serkis is playing a CGI character, that is his niche, after all but it's not like the prequels which relied so heavily on it that it may as well have been animated.

You are asking me for validation of my opinion? That is a pretty arrogant way to treat somebody but it is based on the history of J.J. Abram's work, history of Disney's recent work, current trends in cinema and the trailors of the movie I have seen.

So yes it is anchored in logic even though I have no crystal ball to know exactly what the movie we be like nothing "ill informed" about it.

You don't know anything about this movie, you didn't even know that they intended to use practical effects until I told you...I know more than you from the get go and I'm not even following it that close. Depends on what movie you are speaking of, 4-6 a real puppet 1-3 polygons. The difference is pretty striking, technology may be better but CGI still looks fake so is not believable in fact it looks silly.

@sol_invictus@Nightflash28: "technology may be better but CGI still looks fake so is not believable in fact it looks silly."

So suspend your disbelief and stop focusing on the fact that it's CGI? It really isn't that hard. If you sit there and keep looking for flaws or mistakes then that's all you're gonna see. Just try and enjoy the facking movie.

It's easy to tell Chewbacca is just a guy in an elaborate costume. With the way Yoda walked and the fact that if you looked close enough you could see the animatronics at work it was easy to tell Yoda was a puppet.

No form of special effect will ever be absolutely perfect. CGI can actually look fantastic if done right, it just never usually is. Just like if not done right, puppets can look incredibly fake or a guy in a bad costume is just a guy in a bad costume.

I personally don't give a toss if the movie uses CGI or not, it'll be using practical effects too. What I'm interested in is the story, the characters, the lore, the atmosphere, the tension, the drama, the universe. A movie can be amazing and still use cheap effects. As a matter of fact, the original Star Wars used a stock explosion when the Death Star exploded. It wasn't all that special or an impressive effect of its time, it was actually the visual effect equivilent of the Wilhelm Scream. The emotional impact brought about by the writing and every thing else though... That's what made it memorable. Not the effects.

@sol_invictus: I actually really enjoyed the Star Trek reboots, especially the 1st. I'm sure with whatever criticism Abram's took away from those will help him with Ep 7. Hopefully, however, he gives Star Wars a completely different treatment, as they are different franchises that should feel distinct from one another

@jski@drflyntcoal: I actually saw Star Wars for the first time just 3 years ago and the old trilogy names still kind of sounded cool. Han Solo, Leia, Skywalker, even Darth Vader. All the names in the Force Awakens are just regular names with a typo. Like Phasma is just Plasma with an h instead of l, Rey's just Ray with an e instead of a, Kylo Ren's just Kyle Ron with their e's and o's switched. Poe, well I don't know, Pie maybe? And Snoke is Smoke with an n instead of m. It's a pattern, and I bet every other name's just like that because Lens Flare Abrahams thinks it's "cool".

All the originality is straight up gone.

@drflyntcoal@jski: It's still more original than Destiny, where all the major characters didn't even have actual names.

Guardian

Ghost

The Traveller

The Speaker

The City

At least Abrams isn't calling Phasma "The Chrome Stormtrooper" or "That Butch Girl from Game of Thrones," and at least he isn't calling Tattooine 'The Desert Planet." Silly alien space name convention aside, it could be much, much worse. Snoke sounds kinda goofy, yeah. At least they didn't name him Snookie. Or Jar Jar.

This guy is an amazing motion actor. Loved him as Gollum, Caesar and Kong. Can't wait to see what he does for Star Wars.
