Star Wars: Battlefront 2 May Not Have Season Pass, But "Something Different" Instead

"We don't want to segment our community."

Like Titanfall 2 and Mass Effect: Andromeda before it, EA's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 may not have a DLC Season Pass. Creative director Bernd Diemer told Mashable outright, "We don't have a season pass," before going on to tease that EA is working on "something different" in this area instead.

"I cannot talk about the specifics of this, but we have something different in mind that will allow you to play longer, be [more] invested in the game without having a fragmented community," he said.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Star Wars: Battlefront 2 May Not Have Season Pass

The fragmentation that Diemer is talking about relates to 2015's Battlefront and the DLC that was released through its own Season Pass. If you don't own the game's extra content, it means you aren't able to play with the game's full community of players, which in turn can make it more challenging to find a match.

It sounds like Battlefront 2 is taking steps to avoid a similar situation. He told Mashable that it's "dangerous" for the health of a game's playerbase when maps and modes are only available to those who pay money for them. In this situation, "The community is falling apart because there are simply not many people playing the different modes."

He added: "So we definitely want to avoid that. We don't want to segment our community."

"We decided on that, and it's one of those difficult decisions because it has so many implications all around," Diemer explained. "When we looked at the way Battlefront had evolved over its lifetime, with the DLC and everything, we decided, 'You know what? For this type of game, season passes are not the best thing. We need to [take it apart] and come up with something better."

For its part, EA said in a statement to Mashable that it is aware of the feedback from Battlefront as it relates to "live service plans," and it will announce plans for Battlefront 2 in due time.

"While we're not ready to confirm any live service plans just yet, what we can say is this we heard the feedback from our Battlefront community loud and clear," the statement said. "We know they want more depth, more progression, and more content. So we're focused on delivering that in every dimension of Star Wars Battlefront 2. We'll have more to share about our plans soon."

@jagdedge124: The last one sold over 14 million copies, so I'm guessing this one's going to do pretty well too.

@Mogan: 90 percent of those people are disappointed with the Last one. and the last one was released with the Hype of Episode 7(which is quite Dead).

@dorog1995: Isn't this one coming out around the time Episode VIII is?

I'm not saying Battlefront II here will sell 14 million copies, but between the Star Wars hype and DICE/EA addressing the problems people had with the first game, I'm pretty confident in saying this game is very much not "another flop in the making."

@Mogan: yes but Episode 8 doesn't have the hype that 7 had.

@dorog1995: I don't know. We've seen a single trailer so far. I suspect the hype will be REAL come this holiday season. Might not be as big as Episode VII, because it's not Star Wars' big return to the silver screen, but between movie hype, EA's marketing, and the sheer number of people who bought the previous game, I expect Battlefront II will probably outsell most everything that isn't named Call of Duty this year.

Maybe not Destiny II, but nobody knows anything about that game yet.

I've got a crazy and ''different'' idea! How about making a single player game???

More likely they will take the easy way out and just make it a multi-player fragfest, so 13 year olds can log on, shoot people for 5 minutes, then go back to watching p0rn.

lmfao. If they think I'm going to pay for a "live service" to play multiplayer they can straight up kiss my ass.

You guys better thank Halo 5 for this change. They make a crap load more money for paid random crates. Still sucks I know.

@garyperson: paid random crates only suck for gambling addicts that spend hundreds of dollars on them. EA should just turn madden and NHL into free to play and rake all the money in selling card packs. Co worker spends over a $1000 per year building hut teams.

@garyperson: The crates are so easy to get though, gold crates only take a couple matches

@samrvdman: The problem is the game no longer has unlockables that you can shoot for. Everything is tied to a RNG system and it becomes annoying. I'd rather pay $80 for the game with a normal unlock system.

I'm just hoping so much that EA doesn't touch this game the way they did with BF1 (premium isnt a good idea), and instead treat it like they did with Titanfall 2 and Need for Speed with free content updates and microtransactions limited to cosmetic items only.

@vanquishre:
Agreed. They'll get a lot more out of releasing free content and keeping their player base up which in turn could boost the amount of micro-transactions they receive. If anything do with Titanfall 2 does, They release exclusive titans you can buy separately for 5 bucks a piece. That way you could spend on a character you want but don't need to full enjoy the base game.

I hope it wont be what they are doing in BF1, "Premium Friends". You need to have a friend who got the DLC and you wont get any EXP or anything else from playing it... NO thank you.

The logical thing will be to create a full game and sell new characters / services / skins etc... to keep the game going.

There is no lack of good games that keep on going strong for years with those sort of plans. "All" it takes is to create an actually good full game.

Kinda fun sitting here thinking up new ways for them to screw people over.

My top 3 at the moment, monthly sub, pay per session, and paying for ammo(but unlike other games they don't give you any to begin with)

@dudebropartyyo: HAHAHA, well i've been thinking up weird ideas for what they might do, but at least mine are possible, lol. ;-)

But seriously they should do exactly what you said, the game will sell like no other, and have a massive community, then sell a few cosmetic items for a reasonable price, they get money for running the servers, we get the game we really want.

I'm incredibly hyped for this new Star Wars game, but I'm sure EA will find a way to screw it up just like the last.

Maybe we are going back to pay to win ?

Hmm, so what new way can they scam the shooter gaming community, I know, monthly subscription like a mmo, so you don't break up the community because they can't play if they don't pay, or you need to pay a fee for each time you play, all the maps are free but you need to pay $2 for each gaming session.

It will likely be a pay to progress or advance at faster rate instead of actually playing the game. Artificial levels.

Wanna' raise the soft cap so it doesn't take 300 hours to get one skill point? Pay up!

Wanna' get that epic skin you've been after? Pay up! Thanks, oooh sorry, you got another Jar-jar, better luck next time!

That sweet bad-ass epic move Darth Maul does.... yeah,*rubs thumb against index and middle finger*

Honestly, I have no idea. EA would never do this, right?
