Shipments of PC hardware suffer worst decline on record - Report

IDC report shows 13.9 percent decline in shipments of PC hardware year-on-year, pointing finger at slow uptake of Windows 8 as a cause.

Worldwide shipments of PCs have suffered the worst year-on-year decline since market research firm IDC started tracking shipments in 1994.

No Caption Provided

The IDC reported a total of 76.3 million PC shipments during the first three months of 2013, a 13.9 percent decline from the same period in 2012. The figure is almost double the predicted drop of 7.7 percent.

It is also the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year declines for PC shipments.

HP remains the top vendor of PC hardware, according to the IDC statistics, but has shipped over 23 percent fewer units year-on-year. Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus round out the rest of the top five vendors, with Lenovo posting the best results by being the only manufacturer not to lose any of its market share year-on-year.

Sluggish uptake of Microsoft's Windows 8 was singled out as a reason for the poor numbers. "At this point, unfortunately, it seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market," said IDC vice president Bob O'Donnell in a statement.

"While some consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the radical changes to the UI, removal of the familiar Start button, and the costs associated with touch have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices."

"Microsoft will have to make some very tough decisions moving forward if it wants to help reinvigorate the PC market," concluded O'Donnell.

Windows 8 will have something to do with it, but I'd say it also has to do with people not needing to uprade their machines as much as they used to (I used to upgrade my gaming rig every 6-12 months, but have been happily using the same one for the last 2 years now. People who don't use their rigs for gaming have even less reason to upgrade).

It's almost like people don't like it or something. Windows 8 does a lot of things right, but the things that a lot of people enjoyed were either altered or gotten rid of entirely. Asking everyone to go from a traditional hardware setup to one that requires applications as the dominant form of software expansion is something that a lot of people just aren't interested in. Add the fact that the setup is radically different from previous incarnations of Windows and you have a recipe for lowered sales especially in the beginning.

this is why pc's should not focus on one OS. I have high hopes that linux or android will make a competing pc os in the near future. with more companies taking an interest in linux as an alternative, we will see if they can unify the different versions. Im sure any alternative would be welcomed at this point. especially since MS has made it clear they are more interested in consoles, and phones.

While Windows 8 is terrible, most people (kids) who want to see it fail are console gamers. They (kids) are unable to afford 300 dollar graphic cards and stuck with basic modding, hardly zero addons to their console games. It's no wonder why SOME want the PC to fail.

@starfox15 @titus30075 Used it, and I disliked. In fact, I only bought OEM machines till Windows 8. I learned my lesson after Vista.

funny how people spread rumors about pc declining or dying when they are so false.. the market for pc has increased so much in the last year or at least in the gaming field, and who the heck buys prebuilts? these stats are just based on something we know to be true no one buys prebuilts we build pcs ourselves

@Mr_BillGates Last time when I checked there were more than 600 million PC gamers out there , 250 million main stream gamers with decent rigs from mid range to high end GFX cards , and more than 50 million with top of the line rigs .

@Cloud_imperium @Mr_BillGates Their also used to be that many record players. Bottom line is the pc is declining people use tablets and phones for the things they needed pc for. By the end of the decade it will be a hobby at best

@Cloud_imperium @surppo @Mr_BillGates Really you cant possibly see a future without pc. Thats what people used to say about horse and buggies when cars came out. Its gonna happen if you like it or not just enjoy pc gamiing while you can. And yes programmers will be able to make games on tablets with the cloud and a keyboard. Businesses are slowly but surely moving to eliminate bulky and expensive pc's. It's not gonna happen tomorrow, but pc gaming is on its way out. Why do you think steam is backing the x10 steambox thing, they know in the very near future if they dont change pc gaming to something more console like their wont be anything left to develop for.

@surppo @Cloud_imperium @Mr_BillGates Yeah yeah I am hearing this since 2001 . Not gonna happen anytime soon. If tablets ever gonna hurt something it will be consoles first . Core gaming will stay there on PC and no PC is not declining , you missed the point , there are other operating systems as well other than Windows .PC will stay here is not just a gaming machine but used for everything . I don't see a future where developers sit and program AAA games on their mobiles or in office people use tablets instead of PC while on jobs .

I seriously doubt Windows 8 is the reason. Maybe it's because people have tablets, phones, and consoles that do what most people need a PC to do so they just buy/use one of those instead. Also I don't get the "removal of the familiar Start button" gripe, the start button is still there, you don't have to use the metro dashboard if you don't want to, you can easily make it so it looks and acts like windows xp/7.

Dell desktops are noisy clunky crappy things... no wonder interest is declining.

I say build something much better and much quieter and have freedom of choice for OS and hardware upgrades.

OR... explore small companies that build quiet PCs.

@Commander_Snowy

I don't necessarily like it BETTER than 7, but I've been using 8 on my gaming rig at home and my desktop machine at work (and on a non-touch laptop at work as well) since the beginning of the year, and I like it just fine. Once you get past the learning curve, it will do absolutely everything 7 did.; and yes, with just as few clicks or commands. Windows 8 is not worse...it's just different. If a person thinks there's stuff you can't do in Windows 8 that you used to be able to do in 7 or XP (or could do it "faster"), then they haven't learned the Windows 8 interface completely yet.

Now that I'm used to it, I won't ever be going back to 7.

@Descentia That's my experience EXACTLY! I had a Windows 7 laptop and my HDD broke down because Toshiba HDDs die after only one year for some reason, and I thought let's try Windows 8 on a new HDD. Got pass the learning curve, and everything is much faster and sleeker. I do admit that some things I had difficulty finding, I eventually found everything. I can't go back to Windows 7 because it'll feel to me like I'm downgrading my OS.

Yup. Hatred of change + not wanting to have to learn something new is what's preventing people from going to Windows 8. If Microsoft can hold out past the learning curve/growing pains, then the new Windows 8-ish interface is here to stay, whether desktop PCs stick around or not.

This is exactly what happened when they moved from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95. I distinctly remember people hating both the Start button and the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Now look what ppl are complaining about with Windows 8. ;D

@Commander_Snowy I think the problem is not the hate of something new, i like windows 8 for tablets or that surface pro thing, but the hate stems form the fact thats its FOR TABLETS not a desktop.

Its because windows 8 is garbage, not because tablets and stuff, Microsoft seems to be to arrogant to admit that windows 8 is one of they're worst products.

Misleading title? At first, I thought they were referring to individual sales of hardware components, then the article goes into detail about prebuilt PC's.

I believe this doesn't include the numbers of people who buy their own parts (like me) and instead includes only those who buy pre-built computers. Pre-builds are a thing of the past, building a computer is easy as pie. The PC market is not suffering, everybody's just ignoring Windows 8 because Windows 7 is still pretty great. Microsoft fucked up on 8 for sure. That's a loss for them, and a loss for the stupid pre-build manufacturers who chose to all switch to the new shitty Windows.
