Shipments of PC hardware suffer worst decline on record - Report

IDC report shows 13.9 percent decline in shipments of PC hardware year-on-year, pointing finger at slow uptake of Windows 8 as a cause.

Worldwide shipments of PCs have suffered the worst year-on-year decline since market research firm IDC started tracking shipments in 1994.

No Caption Provided

The IDC reported a total of 76.3 million PC shipments during the first three months of 2013, a 13.9 percent decline from the same period in 2012. The figure is almost double the predicted drop of 7.7 percent.

It is also the fourth consecutive quarter of year-on-year declines for PC shipments.

HP remains the top vendor of PC hardware, according to the IDC statistics, but has shipped over 23 percent fewer units year-on-year. Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus round out the rest of the top five vendors, with Lenovo posting the best results by being the only manufacturer not to lose any of its market share year-on-year.

Sluggish uptake of Microsoft's Windows 8 was singled out as a reason for the poor numbers. "At this point, unfortunately, it seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market," said IDC vice president Bob O'Donnell in a statement.

"While some consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the radical changes to the UI, removal of the familiar Start button, and the costs associated with touch have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices."

"Microsoft will have to make some very tough decisions moving forward if it wants to help reinvigorate the PC market," concluded O'Donnell.

Being simplistic is insulting now? I live rather simplistic and like the lack of stupidity it comes from trying to prove one's worth with some moron whom is ruining their lives keeping up with the jones. Is there anyway to communicate with you without it requiring a hankie? Think however you like of me. It won't matter a whit if previous response is any indication.

Oh and all they really did was ad a funky start menu and rearranged where everything is which was just silly means to make it look different then 7. It's PC friendly just not casual user friendly.

Well sadly with more people buying tablets because they feel they don't need a PC this kind of stuff is bound to happen, although a tablet will never replace a PC. Also the people who are replaces their PC's with tablets are buying ipads or androids. With many apps lacking on windows 8 that is seriously hurting it. That is why I stayed with Android instead of switching to a windows 8 phone and tablet like I wanted to.

I have Windows 7 on my almost two-year-old laptop and a backlog so big that I have no problem waiting until Windows 9 gets out.

It's funny that people who aren't Windows 8 hating internet nerds also show their dislike of it.

Maybe Windows 9 will be Kinect only . MS word and excel (Kinect only) will be a huge thing probably.

I like W8. The best about it is how extremely faster it boots up than previous windows.

@Gomtor don't understand people they talk about The boots up like the only thing they do with windows is just boot and restart it's just a matter of 5seconds windows 7 is better in everything win8 is a failure... I'll wait for win9 and i'm not the only one.

Removing the Start button was crazy. I got use to it on my work PC, but at first it was extremely annoying. -Huge turn off for casual users.

There is nothing wrong with Windows 8, I guess it's just that people don't like change, even though 8 isn't that much different from 7. The only thing drastically different is the live tiles which does actually provide a good amount of info without me having to even open any apps. I don't understand why people knock it so much, at first I wasn't sure but I've now been using it for the last 4-5 months and i have no issues.

I like my windows 7, and I don't want a giant smart-phone instead of a monitor.

Now we have to relearn how to use windows and pay extra to do so.

@roganth 8 works 90% like7. All they did was make the start menu big and customizable. I installed it on my PC expecting a huge learning curve after reading some of the game industry people rant about it. I understood it in 30 minutes. People need to start trying stuff instead of trusting loudmouths.

@Dimebag_Darrell unfortunately, many, many manyyyy softwares became glitchy and sometimes just completely unworkable in the creative industry. Sure it's pretty and all with the new interface, but holy crap, my graphic design studio HAD to downgrade back to windows 7 given the adobe incompatibility and not to mention UDK (Unreal Development kit), Unity (another game dev engine) along with Maya. I'm guessing that the market for Windows 8 is young adults, casual users, and home use, but not creative industry. Some private accounting softwares also do not work at all in Windows 8; I just wish they would accommodate those working in my field soon.

I think it has a lot to do with people realizing how easy it is to build your own PC. Why would anyone want to pay hundreds of extra dollars for something they could do themselves?

The Windows 8 user interface is like an auto manufacturer putting out a car with twin joysticks instead of a steering wheel. It's a change that is totally unnecessary and something that nobody outside of MSFT offices wanted in the first place. Protip to Microsoft: consumers don't care about your "Synergy" plans or your corporate strategy. They just want a computer that works and is easy to use. Windows 7 was just fine and XP was even better. You fixed what wasn't broken real good Microsoft.

Enjoy your market crash.

I'm just going to say that I can run any video on Windows 8, which I cannot say about my tablet. I get regular HULU, access to Amazon services, advanced software, access to Sunj Java, ect. Tablets are good, but they cannot perform like an OS. I personally can't wait to get a Windows tablet to go with my Android tablet, but that won't happen until my computer goes up. BTW, if you are crying about the lack of a start button, download the damn start button app and shut up.

It was about two years ago at this time when there was surge in PC orders mainly from businesses and government agencies to replace aging models. A drop isnt a surprise and its actually common to have a dip in sales because most of the ones purchasing new systems wouldnt be replacing them for at least four years Businesses and government agencies buying new computers recently would still get them included with windows 7 and all of the major PC manufactures will still have an option available to not get systems with windows 8.

This article doesnt also take the account of consumers building their own PCs People building their own PCs are still be able to buy windows 7 OS. Microsoft will not stop making Windows 7 unless they got something true to replace it with.

The rumors you've heard are true: Windows 8 sucks all-around. It's a terrible desktop PC operating system, and an only slightly less terrible tablet OS.

Articles title is a little erroneous, prebuilt pc systems are taking a hit as are windows OS sales. That doesn't mean there is a decline in hardware sales, perhaps more people are building their own systems now. For instance, while Nvidia gpu sales took a dive at the start of the year, sales are back up and haven't been this high since the first quarter of 2011.

Certainly some of this is due to tablets and smartphones, but not all. Hardware is less expensive and more reliable than ever. I have two computers at home, average age 4 years and I don't plan on upgrading unless one dies completely. No win8 for me. I'd rather buy a tablet and have access to both a PC and a tablet. It will be interesting to see what happens long term, but I think PC sales will settle at a lower steadier level. After all, I'm an accountant and can't do my work effectively on a tablet, there is still room for the humble PC but it has to share the market with all these other kinds of computing devices (and that's better for the consumer IMHO)

The purpose of Win8 is to make the next generation even more ignorant about computers. They remove easy access to files, programs and system settings and force apps on people by not making things like Netflix work properly in browsers.

It's one thing to try and encourage touch-screen and cross-platform use, but they are taking a hard-line approach toward forcing mobile as the default. They abandoned selling to businesses just as XP is expiring, when they could have made millions of more sales...

Using windows 8 on a desktop is like using an intergrated graphics chip to play Crysis at ULTRA. You can see the relation there but it will never work.

Also i find it funny people are paying for DOWNGRADES to windows 7. I still say 7 is the best windows so far.

@MW2ismygame I have 8 on my desktop, I also bought a Logitech touch mouse to go with it, since I don't have a touchscreen, and it works really well, supports all the Windows 8 touch gestures. I haven't had any functional problems with Windows 8 (compared to 7 at least) and I actually like the visual aesthetic of 8 a bit better, not that it really matters.

There are no game compatibility problems with Windows 8, that's a myth that's been spreading everywhere. 8 can play all of the same games that 7 can.

In some cases games run a little bit better, since 8 has less overhead and uses somewhat less RAM while a game is running.

It's true though that if 8 doesn't have much success on tablets, it won't have much reason to exist on desktops in its current form. That doesn't make it a -bad- desktop OS, though.

@MW2ismygame I find it also like grabbing a moving van to take a beautiful seaside drive. Windows 8 was designed, from top to bottom, as a touch-based OS, and on tablets it works just fine.

But a desktop PC is NOTHING like a tablet, and Windows 8 is a horrible fit on there, especially if you have multiple monitors. It's completely the wrong tool for the job.

@nurnberg There's a LOT of people that don't need a PC at all. They would use it for email and a little light web surfing, which they can do just fine now on a cheap tablet or smart phone.

None of them are gamers, though, so I don't know if it's that interesting to this forum.

Windows 8 is ridiculous. I sit at a desk when I use my PC. I have a 27 inch monitor, a G19 Logitech keyboard and a G700 Logitech mouse. I'm not looking to buy a touchscreen monitor, and Windows 8 "forces" you to do just that, with its mosaic-like UI and lack of full desktop functionality (start button?). Thanks, but I like my Windows 7.

I happened to have just built a new PC, and could have put any OS I wanted on it, chose Windows 8. Sure, it takes a bit to get used to the new stuff, like not being able to access the control panel from the start menu, but it's not that big of a deal and it's faster than 7.
