Sexually Suggestive Dialogue Removed for DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition

Ninja Theory says it altered the opening cinematic to improve pacing and because "we didn't like the line."

People who pick up the Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition on Tuesday may notice that a scene from the 2013 original game has been altered for the new version to remove some sexually suggestive dialogue.

No Caption Provided

During a early cut-scene, main antagonist Mundus is outlining his nefarious plans with his demon mistress Lilith. In the original game, the scene plays out like this.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch. As am I. Nothing left but to grab it by the hair, bend it over over, and f..."

The Definitive Edition version, however, keeps Mundus' line intact, but shortens Lilith's to chop off the suggestive bit.

Mundus: "Soon I will own everything worth owning. I will control the world through debt. I have absolute power."

Lilith: "The world is at last your bitch."

Both the 2013 DMC: Devil May Cry and this year's DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition are rated M for Mature for depictions of sexual content, blood and gore, and intense violence. The Entertainment Software Rating Board's content descriptions for both games are identical.

DMC: Devil May Cry also contains an implied sex scene between Mundus and Lilith, which remains intact in the Definitive Edition. The alteration of the cut-scene was first discovered by Eurogamer.

In a statement to GameSpot, Nijna Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades the decision to alter the dialogue between Mundus and Lilith.

"We did make an edit to the opening cut scene. It wasn't a case of censorship as there are far more suggestive scenes in the game," he said.

"We felt that scene in particular drags on a little bit for the opening sequence and frankly, we didn't like the line. Those few seconds were irrelevant to the scene and is covered effectively in a later scene where Mundus is metaphorically shafting world leaders."

"For the definitive edition, we took the opportunity to review all aspects of the game, and change things that we didn't like or couldn't add in time," Antoniades explained. "As part of that, we also added a brand new cutscene that didn't make it in time for the original game."

The DMC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition arrives March 10 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Check back soon for GameSpot's full review.

Gamespot Commentators: "FEMINIST CENSORSHIP RUINS EVERYTHING, WOMEN JUST NEED TO LEARN TO DEAL WITH IT!!!!!"

Guess who gets an F for reading comprehension? Guess who works their damndest to censor creative freedom in gaming? Here's a hint: it's not the developers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I haven't played the whole game, but saying there are more suggestive lines, doesn't really mean much here. A woman is saying to man that she is his bitch. To a lot of feminists, that's not so cool. So, unless there are other lines like that, and not just sexual lines, I'm not buying that it was done for artistic reasons or whatever. The climate in gaming is pretty...everyone is walking on glass. So, I don't buy it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Pretty much. There's NO reason to believe this was censorship until someone plays the full game. Remember, IMMEDIATELY after this scene, we see Dante in a strip club.

This is just Makuch being Makuch. Click-baiter extraordinaire.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Depends if you buy the explanation.

I don't think it was because it was suggestive. They also deleted the As am I part of the dialogue. Maybe hoping to avoid the ire of feminists.

If they were so concerned with appeasing feminism, why not just say so? Antifeminist paranoia will jump on them either way, so why not make it a win in that camp?

<< LINK REMOVED >> this is not the only thing they took away, they nerfed a lot of moves in the game for "balance" reasons, what a load of crap i say, also it's completely pointless to remove this line from them game, so why couldn't they remove the line from that bug that swears profusely to dante? what a waste of time imo.

Meh. It wasn't exactly award-winning or captivating dialogue. Sounds like vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity and nothing else.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, the one scene that had all DMC fans tearing their hair out was the "f**k YOU!" scene with Dante, and that boss. It was just so teenage. And in the worst possible way. They should have cut THAT out. Now that was embarrassing.

Can't wait for the "definitive" editions of God of War 1-3. We can put some pantsuits on those naked ladies.

I can appreciate that some may find such words offensive, however generally if I find something offensive I don't expose myself to the medium that is causing said offence. I wouldn't rock up at a chinese restaurant proclaiming to all and sundry that I can't stand chinese food and demand they start cooking me a pizza. And this makes the same amount of sense, as an artistic medium it should be free from censorship, will they only be happy when we are all the same height, weight, sex, colour etc. Diversity should be embraced not uniformity enforced upon everything. Guess what there will be stuff you see in this world you don't like, instead of expecting the world to adapt to your whims try exercising some maturity and turn the other cheek.

<< LINK REMOVED >> it's an industry that reaches most impressionable kids you ever know at this point. it's less of an ordeal puking up mystery meat that's sat in the open for about 6 hours at a chinese buffet than pay for a therapist i guess. not that I think kids are easily ruined by suggestive content. or that your typical shrink is automatically more useful than a bottle of pepto.

There's much worse stuff in the game that they didn't touch at all. As a writer there has been countless times where I liked something I wrote only to hate it in the future. I can buy their reasoning seeing all that. Sad that most people who claim to be like minded and the opposite of the SJW and feminazis, are just as delusional as them with their inability to think about situations properly. They automatically jump to conclusions and assume it has something to do with that.

If this was done purely for editorial reasons (line flow, context, length of the scene, etc.) then that's fine by me, but if this was done in response for cries that they needed to censor that scene then no. At this point I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Antoniades' statement that it was simply an editorial decision.

Isn't there something else like "Good, I like it rough" from Dante to the other girl?

I'm now kind of curious if they edited "that" Lilith/Vergil scene. I mean, holy crap, was that even necessary?

Kinda seems like a dumb reason to edit it. The cutscene can't be long compared to Metal Gear Solid 4's.

Did you read the full article? That's not why they removed the line. They just thought the scene was too long.

The article confirmed the other, much more explicit scenes are still in. So the idea that they removed this for censorship purposes doesn't make sense.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> if they truly wanted to cut a scenes length they would have removed it entirely, to cut half a sentence off was done purely for censorship. Also considering the line could have been seen as objectifying women as just being a sex object then it obviously is a form of self censorship as to the reason they removed it

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It seems many people are not understanding. How could the original line be objectifying women especially since it was said by a WOMAN. If anything the new line would be more derogatory towards women because it uses the B word. Seems silly though because the original line refers to sodomy and rape in only a metaphorical sense. I think Ninja Theory just really did not like the line.
