PS5 DualSense Edge Controller Is PlayStation's Take On The Xbox Elite

PlayStation 5 is getting its own official pro-level controller, and the slick device was shown at Gamescom.

PlayStation 5 is getting a new high-performance controller called the DualSense Edge. The controller debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live, with a slick trailer showing off some of its features. The DualSense Edge looks a lot like a standard DualSense controller, with a similar color scheme and lighting features. But it also appears slightly thicker.

In an PlayStation Blog post that accompanied the announcement, Sony shared more details on the pro controller. It will feature customizable controls including full button remapping, stick sensitivity and dead zone settings, and trigger dead zone settings. It has a built-in Fn button to adjust settings like game volume and chat balance, and quickly swap between your control profiles. You can change your stick caps and back buttons with included alternatives, and you'll even be able to fully replace the stick modules with purchasable replacements. Plus it retains all of the usual features of the DualSense like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The DualSense Edge will come with a USB-C cable and carrying case for holding the controller and all of its components. The case is also designed to facilitate charging with the cable while it's in its case.

No Caption Provided

These features put it roughly on par with the Xbox Elite series of controllers, which offer a premium experience for a premium price. Third-parties have made pro-like controllers for PlayStation, but this will be the first official Sony device. No price or release date was given.

@majorstefan: Agree, much prefer look/move on different planes. It is also more natural and intuitive like tapping your head and rubbing your belly. Early PC controllers, long before xbox was even a word, eventually adopted this design in relation to flight controls. I mean yeah over time you get used to any setup, but as much as I love the PS consoles, and controllers, just that one tiny thing is still irksome.

@pcps4xb: Console owners are biased so I take more stock from platform agnostic PC gamers and 65% of them have spoken by preferring Xbox controllers instead acc. to a Valve(owners of steam) statistical study. Acc. to that study, PC gamers only use Playstation controllers 27% on steam.

@firedrakez: gamers on all platforms are biased. I also use an Xbox controller for PC but I don't think it's better. I prefer it because it's a MS product on a MS Software so support is better. I would say it's a better PC controller for that alone....

@pcps4xb: I think there are more PC gamers than console gamers combined so along with Xbox gamers, I would think that would make Xbox controllers the preferred controller for majority of gamers.

PC gamer also describes the Xbox Elite Series gamepads the best wireless controller in gaming with the regular Xbox Series controllers finishing 3rd. The Dual Sense is a far fourth in the rankings.

https://www.pcgamer.com/best-controller-for-pc-gaming/

I also use the DS4 too on PCs when playing games from PSNow/PS+ Premium and I still prefer the Xbox asymmetrical layout.

Wouldn't pay for a DualSense Edge like $200. Though I expected it to be priced like the Elite 2 controller.

@pillarrocks: A standard DS costs 70, an extremerate rate 4 back buttons kit (which works very well and it's perfectly ergonomic) costs 40/45, so the value of the Dualsense Edge should be around 115/120.

They cannot exceed that amount by much, otherwise many people will go the extreme rate route. I admit that I could buy a DSE out of pure laziness, but if it'll cost too much...

P.S. It seems that the DSE will only have 2 back paddles, that's quite the limitation, it immediately became substantially less attractive.

@gts-r288: That's my first observation too. Only 2 extra paddles? I own the Back Button Attachment for my DualShock 4, and while it's very nice, I always found 2 paddles to be too limiting and I have to keep switching profiles. Really needs 4 paddles like the Xbox elite MK2. The MK2 also lets you remove the paddles as you wish if you only wanted to have 2 of them.

@chronogos: Exactly, I too have the back buttons attachment for my DS4 and I also find it limiting. I need at least 3 paddles for souls-like games, I did get by with 2 but it's not ideal.

I had the Elite MK1 and while it's nice that they let you remove the paddles at will, they got a bit loose over time (maybe it's because of that mechanism).

Slick video, but no real info. No release date. No price. No spec sheet. It looks like they sent the CAD files of the controller to an animation studio and called it a success. Quite frustrating.

There is more info on the PS5 SCUF website about their three controllers than Sony has about their new controller.

The best feature they could add to a pro controller for me is offset thumb sticks. Then the controller would be perfect. Seriously, it's 2022. Time to join the 21st Century, Sony. Almost 30 years and I've never gotten used to those thumb sticks. Playing for more than a couple of hours becomes painful for many and we have to resort to 3rd party controllers until Sony pulls that stick out of their arse.

@bdrtfm: Haven't you ever heard of Xbox and the Elite MK2 controller? Much better than anything Sony has ever come up with. The main reason DualShocks are uncomfortable is because they handles are way too small.

@Bahamut50: Me thinking they're a relic of the past does not = me thinking everyone else on the planet feels the way I do. Sony is one of the last companies to not implement offset thumb sticks. Google's Stadia controller is about the only other one I can think of that doesn't come from a 3rd party. Even Nintendo learned from their Wii U pro controller days and offset the sticks for the Switch version. I have arthritis. PS controllers are murder on my hands. Xbox controllers, not so much. I'm guessing I'm not the only one on the planet who gets sore hands from using such controllers. But that's my personal experience with them.

@stickemup: It's been shown that thumb sticks in the position Sony has them cause far more fatigue far faster than offset sticks. It also depends on the size of your hand and what grip you use. All controllers cause fatigue when used too long but PS controllers do so much more quickly. How often do you see someone's hands in a position where their thumbs are pointing towards each other, almost touching? Probably only when they're using a PS controller. It's simply not natural and is painful to many. Do you think I'm making this up? Google is your friend. If you think I'm the only one who has this problem, Google it.

@stickemup: It's simple. Your thumb typically only moves along the y axis(and x less often) with the left stick. These lines are easier to make thumb pointed up. Try it.

The right is for fine motor aiming and it's easier to make small circles with your thumb to the side. Again, try it.

@faithxvoid: I would disagree using the same argument. Holding up and down on PS controllers is more comfortable, because your thumb isn't already pointing up. It's resting on the joystick diagonally, prepared to push towards any direction. Hope that makes sense.

@Tiwill44:

It objectively provides more rigid range of motion the further you are from a 45 degree position with your thumb.

Whether you find the extra slack more or less comfortable is completely subjective.

More power to ya!

@faithxvoid: thats funny because i like the wideness of the ps4 and ps5 controllers when i play with my series x controller my fingers overlap because of the curve of the controller...and not to mention the tiny thumbsticks I always say the xbox controller is feels like its for baby hands ..same layout as the switch controller but that one is really flat and feels much wider

@rohanrocks88: Switch is actually my favorite controller. I like the flatter, bigger buttons. Best D-Pad on a stock controller, too.

I still think the wired Xbox 360 controller is the best ever made as far as ergonomics and weight. I wish we had real triggers again.

@rohanrocks88: If you had severe arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, you wouldn't be telling me to stop being a baby. I work 12-16 hours a day, seven days a week running a business that requires me to use my hands constantly. If I was a baby, the pain would be too much for me to do that let alone play video games. Everybody is different. I'm telling you MY experience. How comfortable you find them is completely irrelevant to my situation.

@rohanrocks88: Exactly.

I actually hate having all the controllers have the same thumbstick layout. Because you start to get a Switch pro controller XB controller problem. Where the controllers feel the same but the buttons are different.

God, I hate messing up quick time events and fast reflex moments, because the "The 'A' button is down not right this time", or "The 'Y' Button is left not up this time" when flip flop between those consoles. This never happens when I switch between PS and XB.
