PS5 DualSense Edge Controller Is PlayStation's Take On The Xbox Elite

PlayStation 5 is getting its own official pro-level controller, and the slick device was shown at Gamescom.

PlayStation 5 is getting a new high-performance controller called the DualSense Edge. The controller debuted at Gamescom Opening Night Live, with a slick trailer showing off some of its features. The DualSense Edge looks a lot like a standard DualSense controller, with a similar color scheme and lighting features. But it also appears slightly thicker.

In an PlayStation Blog post that accompanied the announcement, Sony shared more details on the pro controller. It will feature customizable controls including full button remapping, stick sensitivity and dead zone settings, and trigger dead zone settings. It has a built-in Fn button to adjust settings like game volume and chat balance, and quickly swap between your control profiles. You can change your stick caps and back buttons with included alternatives, and you'll even be able to fully replace the stick modules with purchasable replacements. Plus it retains all of the usual features of the DualSense like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The DualSense Edge will come with a USB-C cable and carrying case for holding the controller and all of its components. The case is also designed to facilitate charging with the cable while it's in its case.

No Caption Provided

These features put it roughly on par with the Xbox Elite series of controllers, which offer a premium experience for a premium price. Third-parties have made pro-like controllers for PlayStation, but this will be the first official Sony device. No price or release date was given.

Only has two buttons on the back. The reason I bought the Elite MK2 was because there's four buttons on the back. This is very important, because it means I can map all four of the face buttons to the back of the controller. Good for FPS games and games which heavily rely on camera control and face button presses.

Whole 'thumb stick' replacement should be an out of the box feature on both Xbox and PS5 controllers. 95% of the time it's stick drift that instigates a replacement or warranty work.

@WWEKane1515: I am sure they will but it still probably won't match the 40 hour rechargeable battery life of the Xbox Elite Series 2 controllers because of the extra features that PS Dual Sense controllers have that drain it so fast.

To me the current controller is the worst part about the PS5. Sure, it has a couple party tricks that might be considered neato. But overall, I find this controller 2nd rate. Making an over priced version does nothing for me on this. The layout is just wrong, and the tricks it has are either unusable or just not needed. Sony has a LOT more work to do IMHO.

sony should have included optional offset stick placement like Thrustmaster Eswap x pro. It lets you change the sticks to symmetrical or offset.

They should have improved the shoulder buttons and triggers too. There not as good as the Xbox controllers.

Missed opportunity sadly!

If I encounter drift issues and this controller can replace those specific parts, then that's cool. Otherwise I have zero interest in getting this. Controllers are expensive enough as it is.

I personally think the DualSense is already the best base-level gamepad on the market. The only thing they need to fix is the drift issue some consumers have reported. Also, while the d-pad works rather well, especially in fighting games, I think it feels a bit mushier than the DualShock 4's d-pad.

@USDevilDog: Observers have mentioned that Xbox Series controllers now have better dpads than those from Playstation patterned from the award winning versions of the Xbox Elite Series controllers. Playstation even adopted the larger form factor of the Xbox One controllers for the Dual Sense because their own study demonstrated that gamers prefer it over the flimsy Dual Shock 4.

@firedrakez: I do like Xbox Series X's d-pad. Its clickiness reminds me of the Sega Saturn controller, which was a buttery, yet precise d-pad. I have not tried any fighting games on it, but I might just connect it to the PC to test it out this weekend. This is definitely where Sony took a step back.

@USDevilDog: You also have to consider the shorter rechargeable battery life of the Dual Sense. This is a common complaint I have encountered with that controller from owners. The new features are draining it even faster than before.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 gamepad by comparison has a 40 hour rechargeable battery life.

So, will replacing the replaceable sticks fix drifting/deadzoned sticks, or is that a deeper part of the controller that won't be swapped out with these stick moduels? $150 or whatever for a controller and buying new sticks every so often is a lot better than $70 on a controller 1-2 times a year.

@Abdulrahman1981: Supposedly, all 9th gen controllers will be going over to mag sensors before too long, if not already. Not sure on this elite controller, nor switch. If you have any issues at all, both 9th gen consoles have increased their warranties on the controllers for just about any issues. Just contact support, mail it in $6-7, and they mail it back for free - less then a couple of weeks. Even previously owned/ used controllers. Also same with 8th gen controllers for Sony, do not know about xbox.

So far, both of my 9th gen consoles have had no drifts on their controllers during heavy use. I know the problem will eventually hit all controllers over time. So far the industry reports a small %, but we all know it will drift will happen now or years from now. https://www.ign.com/articles/the-real-science-behind-controller-drift

@jenovaschilld: 2 weeks lol. You a "heavy use" type player you not waiting 2 weeks. And anyone in the realm of "heavy use" going to start drifting in 6 months guaranteed. Have went through 20 ps4 controllers and 2 ps5s and it is almost on schedule 6 months of "heavy use" is all you get.

It is so predictable that I believe that Sony is using an illegal business practice called "designed obsolescence"

Only reason I am only on 2 ps5 controllers is there has not been much to play since PS5 released. No online games and no single player games that last much more then a week at best.

@gaeandilth: Well just going by what happened with me. I got a new PS5 console last year and after a bit, I spilt a full hot cup of coffee on my controller, which then sat in it. I tried taking the controller completely apart and cleaning it with 90% alcohol and everything worked but a few buttons. I notified Sony, they gave me instructions on how to send the controller in. At work, we have some consoles in the offices, and I borrowed one of the older launch PS5 controllers there, no drift. I sent mine off, and sure enough it came back with brand with new guts and original outer shell. (i know I perma marked all of the components just to be sure). It took less then 2weeks.

By heavy use, I mean around 500hrs of gaming on two different ps5 controllers. Mainly FF7R, Ratchet, Ghosts of , the horizon games, and spiderman games. Which to mean seems like a lot in less then one year. --

Also I have had no drift in my PS4 controllers as well, and they have had much more time on them. 1000s of hours, 300-400 hrs on Dragon quest 11 and Persona 5 each easily. Much more on CoD and also FF16. Tons of hours on xbox one. Not much on nintendo, beside two rpgs. But that is what I consider heavy use, or typical hardcore gamer usage. I have huge fat hands, but I do not grip heavily, and I take very good care of all my hardware. So again no drift, I personally have encountered.

BUT, I have seen drift in controllers before. I know it is real. I work/own part of a print shop that works with studios that contracts out to developers in the gaming industry. There is also a large podcast/streaming lab on the upper floors of the building for college basketball. We have a workers lounge with several consoles. many tvs, and many/many controllers. A friend showed me what drift looked like on the nintendo and xbox. And it is a very small % of all the gaming controllers there are work and reported by friends and coworkers at home. It is not a big issue that any of us even mentions.

I am glad that those warranties are extended, because it is a very real issues and I hope one that is solved pretty soon. It is good they are replacing them. Very sorry about your controllers. I hope the best.

@jenovaschilld: God I wish there was 300+ hours in DQ11. But it is not even close. First time i played it at release I rented it and did absolutely everything in just over 100 hours. Just recently replayed it and did everything including maxing all players dmg seed farming and it was about 80.

Love/hate those games that you finish and still want to play more but there just is not anything left to do.

But yeah if there was enough RPGS and such out there to keep me busy my controllers would last forever. Worst games for the controller are ones that make you use l3 to sprint.

@gaeandilth: I stare at shit a lot, the food on the tables, the walking patterns the population makes through the day. The chairs and beds for each occupant of a house. Water off of hills that has a source and eventual fate into the ocean. Puff puff girls swaying in the wind back and forth... I get lost in DQ11. What a game.

@gaeandilth: it's the thumb sticks. It's not planned obsolescence. All controllers use the thumb mechanism. They do have magnet switches that don't have mechanical moving switches so they do not go bad, but very few people make them...

Even xbox elite controllers have the same point of failure

@faithxvoid:There was an article in gamesindustry that all 9th gen controllers will be going over to mag switches with less then 1% zero point and no drift.... before too long if not already in motion. There are tons of controllers for PC on amazon, cheap with mag switches right now.

Thing is the patent disputes that is holding things up, Nintendo and others are also having legal issues with these patent holders. Like this one https://www.vg247.com/dualsense-update-ps5-sony-stick-drift https://www.megavisions.net/gulikits-new-switch-controller-promises-absolutely-no-drifting-ever/ and other articles. There is also hacks, going on youtube.

You are so right, and planned obsolescence is not a thing (often times conspiracy drivel) when it comes to an industry -console=- that makes its money on the razor and blade business model. A console maker is not going to make money on selling consoles and controllers that break. Consoles make their money on software/games. You sale the console subsidized or at a loss and make your money on the magic 30%, on each piece of software sold. You want as least amount of friction possible, when it comes to selling software per console. Or tie in ratio.

The idea that, planned obsolescence is silly in this example- the goal is selling software, and a console with a bad controller... is probable not buying software. That in the gaming industry is, very bad. Some may say they buy another controller and make the money there, no, the profitability on a controller is much less then on a new game.

I feel there will be no "new and improved controller with mag switches or guitkeys, or joycon with mag sensor" commercial or big announcement while there is ongoing lawsuits and legal disputes going on world wide. Including the tech that will be replacing it. Things will just slowly, quietly, and legally non-jeopardizing... improve the controller over this gen.

@jenovaschilld:

It's real. It's the cornerstone of the whole Steve Jobs philosophy of consumer tech.

It's just not real with console controllers, because as you touched on, the margins are pretty thin on current gen controllers. I recall joy cons being sold at or near a loss at the Switch's release.

@faithxvoid: Sadly indeed, I also find cannon industry pri nters are much like this, in that after a time the rip or software is deactivated when the machine is no longer supported. It effectively bricks the devices so they cannot be used by a third party out of warranty. Even though the pri nter may have years and years of life left, it is instead turned into E-waste to prevent competition of sales and financing of new editions.

We need strong laws against planned obsolescence, we need congress men/women with a backbone.

Yeah Nintendo, has about as high a tie in ratio as sony, (software to hardware) and the last thing they want is interference from hardware failure or say .... publishers selling games digital products out their platforms licensing reach.

I read somewhere that while the sticks are interchangeable, the taller/shorter sticks will not be included and must be purchased separately. If so, that is a low class alligator arm nickel and dime move by Sony especially considering that this will likely be priced at or above the Elite 2.

As for the moronic tired and contrived copycat comments, please calm down. The video game industry copies each other relentlessly, that ain’t no crime and it’s industry standard.

@GalvatronType_R: Copying is a good thing; it's how progress happens. Take someone's idea and build upon it. Microsoft copied SCUFs idea but greatly enhanced it, now Sony is copying Microsoft as the demand for more buttons is growing. Next gen should have had more buttons to begin with. Controllers haven't changed much since the 1990s, still the same number of buttons even though games are a lot more complex.

@GalvatronType_R: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery as they say. Sony likes to do that. They adapted Microsoft XBL online subscription a few years ago after noticing how much better Xbox's online service is over Playstation.

They started releasing their exclusives on PCs again after seeing how MS doubled the revenue they make on their first party games by releasing on another platform.

And they tried to copy Microsoft's runaway industry winning Gamepass subscription by releasing the PS+ Extra/Premium subs and still can't keep up.

So why should gamepads be any different with Sony releasing a version of Xbox's Premium Elite Series controllers after seeing how profitable it has become since it was first released..

@ceelogreen94: You know what they say. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

However MS has also dropped hints that they will soon be releasing their third iteration of the series the Xbox Elite Series 3 and I am sure it will have new features that would make it better than the Elite Series 2 making it again as PC Gamer mentioned in their article the best controller in gaming.
